I’ll run a govt centred on all – Enugu Governor-elect-vows

Enugu State Governor -elect, Peter Ndubuisi Mbah on Thursday vowed that he would not disappoint the people but would run an all-inclusive administration as he takes over on May 29 2023.

According to him, there can never be division between Nsukka and Nkanu or any other section of the State.

Mbah stated this in his acceptance speech read to journalists in Enugu, barely 15 hours after being declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) but obtained by journalists in Abuja.

He said, “Ndi Enugu! This is your Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. As you all know, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced my election as your governor-elect. I accept this announcement with a glad, solemn and grateful heart and with only one obligation: to devote every tissue of my flesh, the totality of my mind and spirit to the task of the greatness of Enugu State.

This victory could not have been won except for God, with the active support of you, the people of Enugu State. While extending my gratitude to you, permit me to appreciate the current governor of our state and members of his cabinet; statesmen; our party leaders; security operatives; religious leaders; civil society groups, the media, and everyone who made this a reality.

“Like every electoral process, the journey of the last few months was intense. The one of the last three days was even fiercer. Enugu was literally at a standstill, waiting, with baited breath, for justice to take its course. There was restiveness in our youths and apprehension in the minds of the entire Ndi Enugu. The fear was that there could be miscarriage of justice. On the streets of Enugu, you could feel the palpable air of an overheated polity brought by the prolonged, tortuous road to justice of the last 72 hours.

“Let me salute the dogged resolve of the people of Enugu State. I must particularly single out the patriotic men and women who, inside rain and skin-pelting sunshine, chose to occupy the INEC office in the last 72 hours. Their resolute resolve pointed at one single cause: That they are in a hurry for Enugu to connect with all the lofty goals that our administration is bringing to bear in our dear state.

“Let me restate that ours will not be a government of any section of Enugu State. It is your government, Ndi Enugu. Under our administration, there can never be division between Nsukka and Nkanu or any other section of the state. We are all brothers and sisters. Those who attempted to create a wedge between us failed woefully.

“We were massively voted by every section of the state. Those who wanted to smack our heads together had an ulterior motive and it was to create perpetual fussing and fighting between us. We resisted their machination and today, we are coming together stronger. Our resolve thereafter is to pursue the spirit of divisiveness from our state.

“Since the electioneering process began, though the road was rough, it was obvious that we were not alone on the rough road. At every intersection of the rough road, Ndi Enugu were with us. Collectively, we trudged along with bravery and strength of character. Your presence shielded us from rough tackles that were aimed at our spine.

It is why you, Ndi Enugu, are the hero of this victory. You sowed your sweats and prolonged discomfort that earned us this victory. In the hot and torrid sun, you were with us; when the rain – literally and metaphorically – drenched us, you stood by us, offering your clothes to damp our wet apparels. And when it was time to stand and be counted with your votes, Ndi Enugu, you did not let us down.

“The choice you made is clear. You did not go through all those grueling moments for the sake of the fleeting berries of today. You made a huge investment for your tomorrow, for the tomorrow of your children and children’s children. You chose to deprive yourselves of the perishable and glittering rewards of now so that a greater tomorrow can come.

“In choosing us, you did not allow mundane reasons to stop you. You abandoned political party divides, religious denomination cleavages, clan and tribe. All you demanded was the candidate who would guarantee a tomorrow for you and generations of Enugu to come.

“Now, Ndi Enugu, that tomorrow is here. Let me pledge to you, once again, that I will serve you and dedicate every of the 1,460 days that make up this initial tenure of office to serving you. I will remember the coarse road you travailed to get us here. In reply, we will speak resoundingly with policies of government that will give you comfort and rest of mind.

‘As I told you during the campaign, the administration we will run will bring joy to your hearts. We will make you remember March 18, 2023 with a toothy smile. In infrastructure, health, tourism, education and development of our state in general, we will run a government that you can be proud of. We are in a hurry to dualize the Abakpa, Ugwuogo Nike-Nsukka road, build a monorail from Enugu to Nsukka, Udi, Awgu and construct a ring road to connect all the 17 local government areas of Enugu State.

“We are in a hurry to build a world class Theme Park in Enugu. We are in a hurry to establish Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in all the local government areas, as well as Agro-Allied Processing Zones and Industrial Parks in all our senatorial zones.

“We are in a hurry to unleash the tech talents in our young people, and grow and nurture their interest in business and vocations skills. We shall build a School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), an Innovation Incubation Centre, as well as a Skill Enhancement Centre in each of the three senatorial zones.

“Ours shall not be an administration by a section of the state. We shall run an all-inclusive government designed to provide an inclusive economic development for our dear state. As we bring water to all homes in Enugu metropolis in 180 days of our being sworn in, we shall bring water, in the shortest possible time, to Nsukka, Oji River, Udi, Awgu and others too. We shall frontally confront the infrastructural deficits in all parts of the state and no one will be left behind.

“Let me, at this juncture, call on everyone to join me in this task of chiseling a great tomorrow from the rock of a despondent today. In the elections that we ran, we are all winners. No one is a victor, nor is anyone vanquished. The task at hand transcends emotions, politics and other mundane divides.

“It is why I extend my hands of fellowship to all my colleagues with whom I ran the gubernatorial election. Our dear Enugu State is greater than all of us. Let us come together and give our people a tomorrow that befits their hard-work, industry and ancestry of greatness. Once again, Ndi Enugu, I thank you for reposing your trust in us. Together, our tomorrow is here.”

  • Peter Mbah of PDP wins Enugu State governorship election

Peter Mbah of PDP wins Enugu State governorship election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Mr Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the winner of the March 18 Enugu State Governorship Poll.

Prof. Madu Iwe, the State Returning Officer and Vice-Chancellor of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, declared the result on Wednesday at the State Collation Centre, INEC in Enugu.

Iwe said that Mbah of the PDP polled 160,895 votes to defeat his closest rival, Chief Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party (LP), who polled 157,552 votes.

Dr Frank Nweke of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) scored 17,983 votes, while Chief Uchenna Nnaji of All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 14,575 to emerge third and fourth positions, respectively.

Iwe said: “Dr Peter Mbah of PDP having satisfied the requirements of the law is hereby declared the winner and is duly returned elected.”

The controversies surrounding the results from Nkanu East and Nsukka council areas were earlier put to rest after the review of the voting by a Review Panel at INEC headquarters in Abuja.

The returning officer said that the Review Panel upheld the electoral processes that produced the result of the Nsukka council area but had to adjust the votes of the Nkanu East council area.

  • Guber Poll: Announce election result in Enugu state – IPAC tells INEC

Guber Poll: Announce election result in Enugu state – IPAC tells INEC

Political parties operating under the umbrella of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) in Enugu state have called on the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to instruct the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the State, Dr. Chukwuemeka J. Chukwu and the State Returning Officer, Prof. Maduebibisi o Iwe to announce the already collated result in the 17 local government areas and declare the incoming governor without any  further delay.

The call was made by IPAC during a press briefing in Enugu on Tuesday stated that any action short of this will be outside the law and could bring anarchy to an already serious situation.

The group added that INEC has got no powers under the laws to review collated results.

Leaders of the political parties at the press conference were Hon. Chief Edwin Ikechukwu Alor of Accord Party and State Chairman of IPAC; Hon. Innocent Ezeoha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Deputy Chairman of IPAC; Dr. Afam Ani of APP; Barr. Ken Ikeh of APM; Elvis Ugwoke of ZLP who is the Secretary General of IPAC; and Hon. Nnaemeka Oko of AAC.

Others were Hon. Stella Chukwuma of ADC; Hon. Dr. Mrs. Chinyere Madike of ADP; Hon. Louis Chiedozie Ugwu of NRM and Hon. Sir Magnus Ezea of SDP.

The parties stated that what is on ground is enough to form total result and it should be announced with immediate effect.

“The results of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs), including those of Nkanu East and Nsukka LGAs, were all collated by the State Returning Officer on March 19, 2023” stating that “by the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, the only other duty remaining for the State Returning Officer, who is acting on INEC’s behalf is to add up the figures, announce them, and declare the winner in line with Section 65 and 66 of the Electoral Act 2022.”

Describing the delay in the announcement of the final result of the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Enugu State, as “needless confusion and restiveness”, IPAC said: It is our strong view that the INEC State Returning Officer has discharged his statutory responsibility by collating the results of all the 17 local government areas, including those of Nsukka and Nkanu East Local Government Areas. The remaining responsibility for the State Returning Officer is to announce results and declare the winner. INEC cannot be a judge in its own case, if any.”

The political parties stressed that “the law in Section 130(1) of the Electoral Act is also mindful to make provisions for the adjudication of any complaint against a return made by the Returning Officer.

“Section 130(1) provides: No election and return at an election under this Act shall be questioned in any manner other than by a petition complaining of an undue election or undue return presented to the competent tribunal or court in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution or of this Act, and in which the person elected or returned is joined as a party.

“The collation centre is not an Election Tribunal or the law court where redress is sought. The State Collation Center is to accept results as they come, collate and announce them, and ultimately declare the winner.

“Consequently, it is our strong view that the INEC State Returning Officer has discharged his statutory responsibility by collating the results of all the 17 local government areas, including those of Nkanu East LGA and Nkanu East Local Government Areas. The remaining responsibility for the State Returning Officer is to announce results and declare the winner. INEC cannot be a judge in its own case, if any.

“We call INEC’s attention to the case of the Presidential and National Assembly elections where the Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu stood his ground, completed the collation process and announced the result despite all protests.

“Equally, the elections in Ebonyi State, Rivers State and Lagos State, which were fraught with violence, ballot box snatching, over-voting and all sorts of complaints were declared despite these shortcomings.

“So, we see no good reason why the announcement of the final results and declaration of the winner in the Enugu governorship election, which is adjudged comparatively free, fair and credible should be placed on hold because of the desperation of a few individuals and at the expense of the masses who freely exercised their franchise and made a statement through the ballot.

“We are, therefore, urging the National Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu to direct the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Enugu State and the State Returning Officer to as a matter of urgency do the needful by announcing the result of governorship election without delay and declare the winner with immediate effect. Any action short of this will be outside the law and could bring anarchy to an already fragile situation.”

IPAC further maintained that Enugu State governorship election results from the 17 local government areas of the state were duly collated by INEC State Returning Officer on Sunday, March 19, 2023, reiterating that the statement from INEC National Headquarters suspending collation of results in one LGA in Abia State and two LGAs in Enugu State is not applicable to Enugu case because there is no result that has not been collated in the state prior to the suspension by INEC.

The Enugu State PDP, through its Campaign Council, had earlier also disagreed with the INEC on its decision to suspend the announcement of the final results and declaration of Dr. Peter Mbah as the winner of the Enugu State governorship contest, stressing that the election management body was overreaching itself, as it could not, by law, suspend the declaration of an already collated result.

The PDP equally also said INEC was wrong to present the Abia and Enugu cases as the same, pointing out that “Putting the Abia and Enugu situations in one basket clearly shows that the national headquarters of INEC is mixing things up or has not been properly briefed. There is absolutely nothing like outstanding local governments as far as the collation process in Enugu State is concerned.

“Unlike the situation in Abia State, the results of the entire 17 LGAs of Enugu State, including those of Nkanu East and Nsukka LGAs, have been fully collated by the Returning Officer, Prof Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, on Sunday the 19th of March. What remains for the INEC is to sum up the returns by the Local Government Returning Officers and declare our candidate, Dr. Mbah the governor-elect.

“That is why we are saying that INEC is overreaching itself; they have no powers at this stage to suspend the pronouncement or declaration of the winner of the election, which is our candidate.

“Section 64(8) of the Electoral Act 2022 provides that where collation has been completed as in the present case of Enugu State, the duty of the collation officer, who collated the result is to announce the result and make a declaration. Therefore, having collated the results from Nsukka LGA and Nkanu East LGA, the statutory duty and legal responsibility of the State Returning Officer is simply to announce and declare the results, as INEC cannot, by law, suspend the declaration of result already collated,” the PDP said.

On issues relating to accreditation and votes cast in a polling unit and the fate of such votes where they exceed the number of accredited voters in such units, the PDP said such are guided by Section 51(2) of the Act.

“The position of the law is that a Returning Officer has no power to cancel any results at the stage of collation. The only option open to any person dissatisfied with the process is to resort to Section 130(1) of the Electoral Act, which vests the power to receive and adjudicate petitions complaining of an undue election or undue return in an election in the tribunal or court.

“As a matter of fact, we are dissatisfied with the result from Nsukka Local Government Area. We are dissatisfied with the results from Udenu, Isi-Uzo, Ezeagu, and more. But is not for us to take the laws into our hands or indulge in self-help. That is why we are ready to go and interrogate those results at the appropriate quarters because we can no longer complain as the collation has been completed.

“INEC cannot choose the ones you will collate to release the result and the ones you will collate and withhold the result”, the PDP emphasised.

“We believe that the Returning Officer for Nkanu East Local Government Area has duly complied with the provision of Sections 64(4)(a)&(b) and Section 64(a)&(d) of the Electoral Act 2022.

”We consequently restate our position that the only option left to INEC acting through the State Returning Officer for the Enugu State Governorship Election under Section 64(8) of the Electoral Act 2022 is to announce the results and make a declaration of the winner of the election.

“We therefore call on INEC to immediately announce the summation of the 17 local governments it has already collated and declare Dr. Peter Ndubisi Mbah the winner of the March election”, the PDP reiterated.

The PDP also expressed worries that the INEC was already overheating the Enugu polity by the needless delay in the pronouncement of the winner of the governorship election.

“We will continue to caution that INEC should not take the patience of the electorate and people of Enugu for granted. We know what it took us today to rein in their voluminous anger as it relates to the delay in the declaration of Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah as governor-elect and we are calling on the INEC to cease forthwith this foot-dragging and declare our candidate the duly elected candidate in the last election” the PDP stressed.

The party also condemned what it described as desperate and hypocritical approach of the Labour Party to the elections.

“In the instance, our Enugu East senatorial candidate lost his election to return to the Senate to the Labour Party. It was the same process that produced the result that gave Labour Party the victory that also produced the winner of the governorship election in the Nkanu East in the same senatorial zone. But while the Labour Party has accepted the result for the Senate, they are contesting the governorship that the same process produced. This is hypocrisy”, the party concluded.

Nnamani, a former Gov. of Enugu State who announced his exit from the PDP in a statement in Abuja on Monday, expressed appreciation to his constituents for the unalloyed support over the years.

According to Nnamani, he has consulted with his associates and constituents and has decided to quit the PDP on account of irreconcilable differences with the national leadership of the party.

He said that he had moved on and hoped that his modest contributions to the development of his constituency would be the building blocks on which his successors could build on.

Nnamani thanked Nigerians, especially the ‘Ebeano’ political family and urged them to remain steadfast in the years ahead.

The former governor reaffirmed his acquaintance with the President-elect Sen. Bola Tinubu and promised to continue to partner with him.

He expressed optimism that a Tinubu-led administration would promote good governance, rule of law and human rights for the interest of all Nigerians.

Nnamani had in the build up to the 2023 general elections, insisted that he won’t rescind his decision to support the then presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Tinubu, now President-elect.

According to Nnamani, he decided to align with Tinubu, because the PDP has breached its Constitution by subverting the principle of power rotation.

Nnamani lost his reelection bid to the Senate to Labour Party (LP) candidate, Kelvin Chukwu.

The LP candidate polled 69,136 to beat Nnamani of the PDP, who scored 48, 701 votes.

  • Enugu State Governorship election a battle of the two Peters – By Anayo Agu

Enugu State Governorship election a battle of the two Peters – By Anayo Agu

    By Anayo Agu

Countdown to the federal and state elections is well underway and the anxiety is palpable. In churches,  mosques, and shrines, Nigerians across political, ethnic, and religious divides are praying for peace during  this election cycle which many describe as a watershed in our checkered history. According to the  Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), about 93.5 million registered voters are expected to  cast their votes on February 25, 2023, to elect a new president and members of the national assembly. In  a similar manner, the governorship and state assembly elections will take place on March 11, 2023.  These elections, if conclusive, are expected to redirect Nigeria’s political trajectory and usher in a new  dawn. Today, Nigeria sits on the brink of a political precipice due to an inept and divisive government  led by President Muhammad Buhari of the All Peoples Congress (APC).

Enugu State – A Two Horse Race, And A Battle of The Two Peters:

Enugu State is one of the states of interest that are poised for an epic, political battle. The atmosphere is  becoming increasingly tense as all permutations and groundwork point conclusively toward a two-horse race, between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP). While this conclusion may  stir the hornet’s nest, it is our hope that no one will misconstrue or twist it to suggest that other parties  campaigning for the elections are no longer relevant. No such insinuation is intended. The primary  motive of this article is to highlight the state of the campaign, and the two candidates and parties  accounting for over 80% of grassroots mobilization with noticeable footprints in most electoral wards.  They are the ones substantially shaping voter attitude and choices. The two leading candidates are Dr.  Peter Mbah of PDP, and His Excellency Peter Obi of LP. Of course, there are a few exceptional  candidates such as Princess Adaku Ogbu-Aguocha of APC whose socio-political activism has evolved  into a real and growing threat to His Excellency Senator Chimaroke Nnamani’s desire to return to the red  chamber. While we sincerely acknowledge APGA’s governorship candidate, Frank Nweke, Jr, for his  compelling presentations, nonetheless, we agree with most observers that he appears to be a one-man  army badly weakened by inadequate campaign infrastructure, foot soldiers and other critical logistics.

So, in a nutshell, and in context of the above highlights, Dr. Peter Mbah of PDP clearly stands out as the  candidate to beat in the governorship race. What makes the contest intriguing, however, is the fact that  His Excellency Peter Obi, who ironically, as the alter ego and presidential candidate of the Labor Party  (LP), is perceived as Mbah’s “de facto” opponent, not the presumed gubernatorial candidate of LP, Hon.  Chijioke Edeoga. The reason for this anomaly or paradox is not farfetched.

    Labour’s Unresolved Gubernatorial Tussle:

The Supreme Court has reserved February 27, 2023, to decide who LP’s gubernatorial candidate in Enugu  becomes, but that pending decision is not why Peter Obi is perceived as Mbah’s opponent. Here is the real  reason. Last year, two presidential polls conducted in September and December by ANAP, a  nongovernmental organization chaired by the Founder of Stanbic IBTC Bank, Dr. Atedo Peterside, rattled  the two main political parties, PDP and APC, when it reported that Peter Obi of LP was favored to win  the presidential election. The polls also predicted that Obi would win over 50 percent of all votes cast in

the South East including Enugu State. Those nonpartisan reports corroborated widespread sentiments  shared by most potential voters across two geopolitical zones, South East and South South.

As a third force, Obi and his cohorts, against all odds, have done an incredible job of awakening  Nigerians to their political rights and power. The ripple effects of this awakened political consciousness  which gave birth to the Obidient Movement, accounts for Obi’s surging popularity nationwide. It also  explains why candidates of his party in Enugu State see him as their magic wand for electoral victory.  Without any exception, every LP candidate stands on Obi’s credentials. Everyone piggybacks on his  goodwill. As a result, Obi is the campaign mantra on every LP lip, and Mbah’s de facto opponent.

One of the unintended consequences of this mass scramble for Obi brand is the failure of LP in Enugu  State to craft the kind of campaign manifesto and strategy expected of a party truly desirous of rolling  back the momentum of a formidable opponent as Mbah and his party, PDP, that is deeply entrenched in  the psyche and political culture of Enugu people. Furthermore, contrary to the expressed values and  modus operandi of its presidential candidate, the local party surprisingly wastes precious time and  resources relentlessly attacking and seeking to undermine their opponents, especially Peter Mbah, instead  of seizing the political space to make a difference ahead of the elections.

How The Battle Grounds Are Shaping Up:

The coming elections in Enugu State will feature a major battleground – Enugu North Senatorial Zone,  and a mini battle ground – the Coal City otherwise known as Enugu Capital Territory. For the Coal City,  the defining variable is the rising influence of residents (non-indigenes) in Enugu politics. This growing  phenomenon is presently accentuated by the Obidient Movement. It is expected to impact vote patterns in  the capital territory. Already, reports coming from critical communities such as Coal Camp, Kenyeta/New Layout, and Ogbete Market indicate that the coming elections won’t be business as usual.

Enugu North Senatorial Zone is of special significance for two basic reasons. First and foremost, His  Excellency Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, being the senatorial candidate of PDP in the zone is the big  masquerade raising a lot of dust in every constituency. Winning the election is not only crucial for his  political future and legacy; the opportunity cost of his losing is politically unquantifiable. The good news  for his party and supporters is that the governor, apart from being a grassroots politician, has deep  pockets. Several reliable sources confirm that he has mobilized a battalion of diehard, foot soldiers that  are pitching his message and pointing at his achievements such as the State University of Medical and  Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo Eno, and infrastructural developments in the zone. How far these  efforts will go in assuaging frayed nerves and converting rebellious youths and aggrieved former  members of PDP in some places, only the Election Day will tell.

The second reason Enugu North is a major battleground is that it is perceived as LP’s stronghold because  of Hon Chijioke Edeoga’s biological, marital, and cultural ties with important stakeholders in the zone.  There is also his famed deep political roots and experience accumulated over the years and strengthened  when he served as commissioner for local government affairs under Governor Ugwuanyi from 2015- 2019. Above all, his party is staking its hope of winning the gubernatorial race on the probability of a  decisive, landslide victory in the zone. Without such a breakthrough performance and a substantial win  either in Enugu East or Enugu West, LP’s boast of dismantling PDP will end up as mere sound and fury  signifying nothing.

    Swing Zones and Safe Grounds:

Enugu West and Enugu East Senatorial Zones are considered as “safe grounds” for Peter Mbah and other  PDP candidates. Most political analysts are unanimous that several forces are converging to strengthen  and validate this presumption. Apart from being traditional PDP enclaves, major stakeholders in the two  zones have creatively managed to set aside their differences, and as a result, are proactively campaigning  for all candidates of their party. Additionally, Enugu East has not only taken some bold and decisive  steps in support of their preferred gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Peter Mbah, they have equally made a  public show of their choice by organizing a very successful solidarity rally to endorse him. And the  endorsement cuts across political divides.

Enugu West Senatorial Zone, on the other hand, has not only recovered from the mild stroke it suffered  during the party primaries, the PDP in the zone has substantially consolidated its dominance through  well-choreographed and coordinated joint campaigns for its candidates. To cap off their unity of purpose,  the former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu through his campaign organization, is  backing Mbah and other PDP candidates fully. Hate him or love him, Ekweremadu remains the single  most important political force in the zone and boasts of the largest network of loyal followers.

A Rampage of Endorsements and Solidarity:

Peter Mbah tops the campaign chart on endorsement by a wide margin. While party strategies will  certainly differ, the primary purpose of an election campaign is to communicate to the electorate a  persuasive message to inspire and motivate them to vote for certain candidates. Perhaps, the quantum and  quality of endorsements Peter Mbah has garnered so far from across the state are indicative of widespread  acceptance of his manifesto and message. Apart from his wholesale endorsement by Nkanu political  leaders, some other high points of the rampage of endorsements include his adoption by a coalition of 12  opposition parties in the state, and his endorsement by a group of top APC leaders from his Senatorial  Zone, Enugu East, led by the former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani. Other significant  endorsements include those of the former governor of Enugu State and a stalwart of PDP, Chief  Okwesilieze Nwodo, and Dr. Jeff Nnama who contested the APGA primary with Frank Nweke, Jr.

    Conclusion:

Putting everything together, the following is the conclusion of the matter: Enugu governorship election  has boiled down to a two-horse race between PDP and LP, and a battle of the two Peters. While Obi,  among other things, promises to unite and move Nigeria from consumption to production, Mbah on the  other hand, offers Enugu State a chance to reinvent its governance model, to do things radically different,  and to grow exponentially from a $4 billion dollar economy to a $30 billion-dollar commercial hub in  eight years. Based on their track records, it is safe to assume that both candidates have the capability to  fulfill their promises. The single most important challenge facing their parties is voter education.  Conflicting messages emanating from some party leaders especially those pursuing conflicting interests in  opposition parties have made this onerous task of enlightening the electorate much more complex.

Enugu State needs a governor who has demonstrable capacity to bridge knowledge and performance.  This election, therefore, is not about political philosophy. It is about proven ability to build a 21st century  state, and to transparently govern it according to global best practices and democratic norms.

  • Distraction by opposition parties means nothing to us – PDP

Distraction by opposition parties means nothing to us – PDP

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State said “little distraction” by the opposition political parties did not mean anything to them.

Uchenna Igwesi, the Director, PDP Support Groups and Coordination, stated this during a march for the PDP governorship candidate in Enugu, Dr Peter Mbah.

The march was organised by different Mbah Support Groups in collaboration with the Enugu State PDP Campaign Council.

The march, which kicked off at the popular Okpara Square in Enugu, saw scores of Mbah’s supporters and party members march through Enugu Stadium and New Haven area of the state.

Igwesi said the rally was like a national rally, stressing that all the small political parties in the state were losing out because PDP had demonstrated capacity and stronghold.

“The little distraction coming from the opposition parties does not mean anything to us and and that is what we showed today,” he said.

Igwesi said he never knew Enugu State loved PDP and Mbah as they showed during the march.

He said, “During our movement, I discovered that PDP is in the blood and heart of Enugu people.”

“People were joining and shouting Biblical Hosanna and all we need to do is to formalise our processes,” he said.

The coordinator further said, “Your excellency, these are members of our party structure, supporters of all the various support groups.

“They embarked on this journey because they loved you and that shows resilience and determination in making your ambition success.”

The Deputy Director, Enugu East Support Group and Coordination Committee of Enugu Campaign Council, Dr Emeka Nwatu, said Mbah had all it required to provide leadership in Enugu State.

He described the march as fantastic, saying they were not rented crowd.

According to him, they are people that are passionate to support Peter Mbah’s aspiration.

He added that PDP would win landslide in all the elections in the state.

Nwatu said the petition against Mbah by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) guber candidate in Enugu was frivolous, baseless and filed out of time.

“You need to have locus standi to file a suit, PDP primaries took place in May, 2022 and by law, you have 14 days to file whatever you want to file but they filed in September.

“Beside, he did not participate in primaries of PDP but was in another party,” he said.

Reacting, Mbah thanked and appreciated the convener for the march, describing the action as a demonstration that their tomorrow was actually here.

“What it means is that you are already with us in this journey of greatness, growth and development.

“I want to promise you that the tomorrow that you desire, we are not going to let you down.

“Now, we have a sight to finish the line as we already know that victory is ours,” Mbah said.

Expelled Nnamani remains adamant, says he is still in PDP

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has approved the expulsion of former Governor of Enugu State, Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani, and six others from the party.

The party stated this in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, in Abuja on Friday.

The six others expelled from the party, according to Ologunagba, are Chris Ogbu (Imo State), Ajijola Oladimeji (Ekiti Central), Olayinka Olalere (Ekiti Central II), Fayose John (Ekiti Central I), Akerele Oluyinka (Ekiti North I) and Emiola Adenike Jennifer (Ekiti South II).

He said that the seven members were expelled for anti-party activities and other grave offences in violation of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017).

Ologunagba said that the expulsion of Nnamani, who is currently representing Enugu Central senatorial district at the Senate, and six others was approved by the NEC at it 66th meeting on Friday.

“The decision of the NWC is sequel to the recommendation of the National Disciplinary Committee and pursuant to Sections 58 and 59 (1)(g) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).’’

Ologunagba said that the expulsion took effective from Friday, Feb. 10.

He charged all PDP members across the country to remain united and focused on the mission of the party to rescue, rebuild and redirect the nation.

Meanwhile, Nnamani, in a swift reaction, described his expulsion as a nullity, saying the NWC has no powers to suspend or expel him from the party.

Nnamani, in a letter to the party, through his Counsel, Olusegun Jolaawo, said that the NWC did not follow due process and strict compliance with the provisions of the PDP Constitution.

The counsel said that based on Articles 57(7) and 59(3) of the PDP Constitution, no organ of the party, including the NWC, has the competence to entertain any question of discipline against Nnamani.

He said only a properly constituted National Executive Committee of the party could entertain such question of discipline against him.

My expulsion a nullity, Sen. Nnamani blasts PDP

Meanwhile, Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani (PDP-Enugu) has said he is still in the PDP in spite of his purported suspension by the NWC.

Nnamani, who represents Enugu-East at the National Assembly said this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.

He said that the NWC had no powers to suspend or expel him from the party.

Nnamani, also a former governor of Enugu State said the NWC did not follow due process in suspending him from the party as it was not in compliance with the provisions of the PDP Constitution.

“The NWC lack powers to suspend or expel me from the party as a member of the National Assembly,” he said.

Nnamani said that he was neither invited nor given the opportunity to be heard before the decision against him was taken.

He said that going by article 57(6) of the PDP constitution, the NWC lacks the requisite powers to entertain any question of discipline against him to the extent of suspending or expelling him from the party.

Nnamani said the proceeding and decision reached at the NWC meeting on 20 Jan was both illegal and a nullity and urged the party to reconsider the action.

”Your proposed disciplinary hearing of Feb. 8 is wholly erected on illegality and your committee equally has no powers under the Constitution of the party to invite me for the purpose of entertaining any disciplinary matter against me,” Nnamani said.
