Two suspects arrested with redesigned Naira notes counterfeit

The Police Command in Enugu State has nabbed two male suspects possessing, transacting and selling counterfeited redesigned N1,000 notes within a council area in Enugu State.

The suspects were in possession of counterfeited 180 pieces of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) newly- redesigned N1,000 notes, with face value of N180,000 (One hundred and eighty thousand naira).

This is contained in a statement by the Command’s Spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Friday in Enugu.

Ndukwe said that the feat was achieved when police operatives serving in Igbo-Eze South Division of the Command acted on credible information on Feb. 2 at about 9:05p.m.

He said that the police operatives arrested Joseph Chinenye, 39, and Onyeka Ezeja, 29, both male, and respectively of Iheakpu-Awka in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area (LGA) and Onicha village in Enugu-Ezike in Igbo-Eze North LGA.

“Preliminary investigation shows, among other things, that the Naira notes, which are in three separate batches, bear the same serial numbers of A/34:282656, A/46:578759 and 8/93:852942.

“The suspects claimed to have secured the counterfeited Naira notes from an unidentified woman in Benin, Edo State.

“In addition, they confessed to attempting to sell the Naira notes to a POS operator, who rejected them.

“They were, however, arrested by police operatives at a Filling Station in Ibagwa-Aka community of Igbo-Eze South LGA, where they used the Naira notes to purchase petrol,” he said.

Ndukwe said that the duo would be arraigned in court upon consolidation and conclusion of investigation into the case by the State Criminal Investigation Department, Enugu.

He said that the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Ahmed Ammani, had reassured the commitment of the police to fish out and bring to book, criminal elements hell-bent on perpetrating such acts of economic sabotage.

The police spokesman said that the commissioner also urged all and sundry to support the police in its quest to deal with criminality and criminal elements.

”I want the good people of Enugu State to be vigilant and wary of who or how they obtain and carry out transactions with Naira notes, especially the new Naira notes,” he added.

Unknown gunmen sets INEC office ablaze in Enugu state

Unknown gunmen have set ablaze the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu state.

It was reported that the incident happened at INEC office located at Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Government Area, LGA, Enugu State.

A security man was shot dead and part of the building was destroyed by the gunmen.

However, a source from the village told our correspondent that they quickly called the men of the Fire Service, who arrived quite on time but could not go near the premises to extinguish the fire due to the dead body they sited around.

“The building would not have been razed because we called the fire service men. But they were afraid of going inside because of the person that was shot dead.

“Everybody was really afraid. They felt the guys were still around. But we knew that the gunmen had left”, a villager said.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of INEC, Mr. Victor Okafor said the hoodlums only succeeded in burning the security house of the building, stressing that the commission’s materials were not affected by the fire.

He regretted that people still find pleasure in burning INEC facilities despite the efforts put in place by the commission to make people’s vote count in the forthcoming elections.

Peter Obi clears bill of patient abandoned in hospital

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, has paid about N1 million to off-set medical bill of Mrs Blessing Usulor, a resident of Enugu, abandoned in a hospital.

Usulor, in June 2022, was rushed to the Hopecare Medical Centre, Enugu by her neighbours when she slumped in her quarters within the IMT Campus-4 axis of Enugu.

Presenting a cheque on Wednesday to the Medical Director of the Centre, Obi, who was represented by Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, extolled the hospital management for putting life first before monetary consideration in terms of payment of deposit.

He said that the exemplary conduct of the hospital by seeing to the survival and total recovery of the patient showed “the New Nigeria we all are yearning for”.

According to him, the recovery of Usulor and the exemplary conduct of Hopecare Medical Centre is a shining example that with love and care, Nigerians have the capacity to rebuild this great country once more.

“I was indeed shocked when I learnt about the Usulor story through Ambassador Ojukwu.

“We have to bear each others burden, be our brother’s keeper and create a Nigeria that works for everybody and we can be proud to call our own and home,” he said.

Responding, the Medical Director of the Centre, Dr Samuel Ngwu, said that she was admitted few days in June, 2022 and was brought to the hospital in coma by neighbours living within her quarters.

Ngwu noted that she stayed in coma for a whole 10-days and her medical case was with some complications.

According to him, these complications include renal failure, which involved the hospital carrying out a dialysis, diabetes complication and eventually she also developed ulcer due to long stay in the bed.

“As God may have it, she recovered. At the beginning there was no monetary deposit and my staff brought that to my attention.

“And my answer was that a 22-year-old person will never die in my care because of money.

“So, we continued to treat her; and after the treatment, paying the medical bill became a challenge after she was discharged on July 1, 2022.

“Since then, she could not meet up with her bill and she had been here while the husband that also came with her two-year-old son later abandoned both her and her son till date.

“While in the hospital all these time, she lives on handout from other patients or relatives of other patients she meets in the ward. Earlier, today, a relative of a patient gave her N3,000,” he said.

The medical director thanked Obi for the gesture, adding that “we are looking forward for a New Nigeria, where we will be led by leaders with vision like Mr Peter Obi.”

In a tearful mood, Usulor, who hails from Ebonyi, appreciated Obi for identifying with “a poor and nobody” in the society.

“I am overwhelmed with joy that I don’t know how to thank His Excellence for this kind gesture and remembering someone that has been abandoned.

“I appreciate Dr Samuel Ngwu and the entire management of Hopecare Medical Centre that God has used to keep me alive till today. May God continue to bless and reward you all,” she added.

2023: No Nigerian is against my candidacy – Peter Obi

Candidate of the Labour Party for the 2023 presidential election, Mr Peter Obi has said no Nigerian is against his candidacy for election.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Peter Obi said this after signing the condolence register opened for the recently demised President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Prof. George Obiozor.

The Labour Party presidential candidate disclosed that he made haste to be at the Ohanaeze National Secretariat in Enugu on Friday and was first to sign the condolence register due to the deep respect he has for Prof Obiozor.

Obi described the late PG of Ohanaeze Ndigbo as a rare great and respected leader that had served humanity and the country in various capacities.

According to him, due to the importance, value and respect I have for our leaders, especially our eminent leader and academic luminary, Prof. George Obiozor, I have to leave my home in Lagos to be here this morning.

“No Nigerian is against my candidacy but what we have is different opinions, which is highly allowed in a democratic dispensation.

“I am very sad that we lost Obiozor. Our country, Nigeria; the Igbo people and humanity have lost a rare gem and personality.

“However, we cannot question God for His decision. I pray that God Almighty that called him home, will grant him eternal rest.

“I pray that God Almighty will grant all of us the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he said.

Obi also urged Nigerians to put their faith in God and work hard, adding: “We pray that God will continue to bless our country, Nigeria”.

Nigerian Army rescues abducted female soldier in Enugu

A kidnapped female soldier has been rescued by the combo of the Nigerian Army and the Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday.

The female Lieutenant p.p Johnson was abducted by unknown gunmen few days ago.

The Army officer had been moved to a forest bordering Enugu State and Ihube Okigwe Local Government Area in Imo State.

The gang stripped the officer, from Abia State, and made a video of her on 26th of December, Boxing Day.

The voice behind the recording said the location was along Enugu highway which links Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital.

Recall that Johnson was kidnapped when she travelled to her hometown for Christmas Day celebration.

The victim passed out on December 17 after completing the Direct Short Service Course.

It was gathered that the Army leadership quickly mobilized its men to rescue her after the news of her disappearance surfaced.

It is suspected that the recording, which circulated on the internet, might have assisted security agencies in tracking the abductors.

Police rescue four kidnap victims in Enugu forest

Police operatives serving in the Iwollo Division of the Enugu State Police Command have rescued four kidnapped victims in a forest at Akama-Oghe in Ezeagu Local Government of the state.

This is contained in a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, on Sunday in Enugu.

Ndukwe said that the feat was achieved in synergy with Neighborhood Watch and Forest Guards personnel, at about 10am of Dec. 24.

“Those rescued in the hands of kidnappers in a forest at Akama-Oghe in Ezeagu Local Government Area were three males and one female, reported to have been kidnapped along 9th-Mile/Eke/Akama-Oghe Road on Friday at about 8pm.

“The police operatives also recovered a black-coloured Mercedes Benz car belonging to one of the victims, while all the victims have been debriefed and reunited with their families,” he said.

The police spokesman said that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Ahmed Ammani, had ordered tactical operatives of the command to sustain ongoing manhunt of the fleeing kidnap suspects.

He added that the suspects abandoned the victims and escaped due to the intense pressure mounted by the combined team of security personnel to rescue the victims and apprehend them.

  • Catholic bishop bans priests from conducting crusades

Catholic bishop bans priests from conducting crusades

The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, His Lordship, Callistus Onaga on Saturday banned priests from conducting crusades in their parishes.

Bishop Onaga announced the ban in his homily at the ordination of 26 priests and the celebration of 50 years anniversary of the Sacred Heart Seminary, Nsude (Junior Seminary) in Enugu.

He charged the priests to organise retreats for their parishioners and pay greater attention to prayers and not hold crusades.

Onaga who was celebrating his 55th alma mater warned priests against forming prayer groups, but to take their members to approved prayer places like Ugwu Dì Nso, monastery and others.

“Do not adopt the Pentecostal approach of service, and be careful in forming prayer groups,’’ he charged.

He admonished the newly-ordained priests to seek spiritual holiness and avoid being dragged into secular affairs.

Earlier, the rector of the seminary, Rev. Fr. Stanislaus Onodugo said the seminary was the brain-child of Bishop of Enugu, His Lordship Godfrey Okoye of blessed memory, in 1972.

He stated that since 1972, priests and lay persons that went through the seminary had graduated into reputable personalities.

“Today, the seminary can boast of at least one bishop who was among the second set to study in this seminary, and that is Bishop Onaga.

“We are also celebrating the grand finale of our golden jubilee which started since June, 27.

“Today, our dear bishop raised 26 deacons to the Order of Priesthood and we are happy that such event is happening in our time,’’ Onodugo said.

Bishop Onaga was among the second set of students to be admitted into the seminary in 1973.

  • Enugu State needs a Good Samaritan, not a saint – By Anayo Agu

Enugu State needs a Good Samaritan, not a saint – By Anayo Agu

    By Anayo Agu

The story of the Good Samaritan teaches many profound lessons, but the heart of it all is “love your neighbor in spite of your differences and be good to everyone.” The Good Samaritan embodies other virtues such as empathy and compassion. His conduct is a lesson in courage, commitment, and death to self in the service of neighbor and the public. His attitude trashes the conceit of the self-righteous.

There are no saints among us, not even one. The Holy Bible is this much clear about human nature and the morality of over eight billion human beings who populate the earth today.  But there are some Good Samaritans among us. There are some persons in our political environment, who are admired for the courage of their convictions, their outstanding achievements, and contributions to our development; their compassionate predisposition to rescue and bind the wounds of any lone way fairer stricken down by bandits on our uncertain, life highways.  Such people will always be rare in any environment and at any moment in time. But, amid our current challenges, such are the people we really need to lead the charge in our next political cycle starting May 2023.

    THE REIGN OF TERROR

Things are no longer at ease in Enugu State. Anyone still thinking otherwise is either living in a fool’s paradise, or is a direct beneficiary of the inexplicable, sudden descent of the State into a conclave of killing and bloodbath in broad daylight. There is no doubt that something has gone fundamentally wrong with our security architecture and/or with the key operatives. Otherwise, how does anyone explain the carnage going on in several communities in Isi Uzo local government area, the killings and the pandemic of kidnapping spreading unchecked like wild fire across the State? Are these fatalities not enough indicators that our security system has collapsed?  Or are we waiting until Enugu State becomes a replica of the mayhem in many states in Nigeria?

On all fronts and in all our highways, Enugu State is under attack. While the Federal Government watches from a distance and appears indifferent, and the state government seems helpless, gangs of merciless bandits, ruthless kidnappers and weaponized herdsmen are gradually snatching Enugu State from “the hands of God.” And the irony of it all is that the elaborate headquarters of the 82 division of the Nigerian army is located right at the center of the state capital, Enugu. Yet allegations are rife, proven or not, that some soldiers on duty at check points might be complicit in most of the kidnappings now happening frequently along Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, along Four Corner – Udi axis, along 9th Mile-Udi old road, along 9th Mile-Opi old road, and along Nike-Opi bypass. Agbani, a strategic commercial town in Nkanu West, has also become a killing field and a nightmare to the Police.

Enugu State, once rated as the most peaceful state in Southern Nigeria and one of the safest places to live and do business, has suddenly become a safe haven and a gathering wasteland for merciless bandits and foreign kidnappers. And the relevant authorities appear unwilling or unable to stem this worrisome trend. All of this month of November, 2022, the social media have been jammed by tales of tragedies, and of gory stories about victims killed on their way home. The statistics include a mother and a child returning from a marriage ceremony in Ebonyi State, and victims hacked down or taken hostage in their neighborhoods.

THE ILLUSION WE GLORIFY AND PAY FOR

State governors are designated the chief security officers of their states.  Yet, they neither command any security agency nor have authority to procure arms and ammunitions even for their local vigilantes. How anyone in this precarious constitutional arrangement is expected to decisively deal with and effectively tackle the compounding complexities of our security challenges is beyond comprehension. More importantly, this dilemma calls to question the real intention of the humongous security votes the governors are burdened with and most enjoy to dispense without transparency and accountability.

BEFORE THE CHRSTMAS SEASON AND THE 2023 ELECTIONS

A state of emergency must be declared, at least for one week, in Enugu State to address the surging brigandage and killings on our roads, farmlands, and communities. Otherwise, this Christmas season may be a harrowing period, and it may witness some unpleasant experiences. We must devise some indigenous ways to take back our state from foreign bandits, commercial kidnappers, and armed herdsmen who have seen our people and environment as a soft target. We must be strategic, unanimous and decisive, and our political leaders should be at the forefront.

Some concerned citizens have made useful suggestions on how to curtail our deteriorating security situation. Their suggestions include the necessity of local government chairmen to step up security surveillance and also the need for them to take full charge of security responsibilities in their domains.  The thinking or the wisdom in this proposal is that security is local and it is everybody’s business. While one acknowledges these good intentions, the fact remains that security is constitutionally and financially a national and sub-national function domiciled with the office of the president and the state governors, who are “designated” the chief security officers of their states.  Designate is used advisedly here, because; state governors are chief security officers de jure, but not de facto, as lawyers would put it. It may therefore be problematic to ask the local government chairmen who do not have the financial backing to take over the kind of large-scale insecurity currently besieging every nook and cranny of Enugu State.

    STEMMING THE CAMPAIGN OF CALUMNY

Some weeks ago, there was a very interesting article, possibly in Enugu Metro. According to the author, the governorship candidates of the four leading political parties in Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah of PDP, Chijioke Edeoga of Labor Party, Frank Nweke, Jr. of APGA, and Uche Nnaji of APC, are protégés of some of the god fathers who dictate the selection of political leaders in Enugu State.  While the author accused Edeoga of loyalty to the Nwodo family who are his in-laws, he claimed that the other three candidates are beneficiaries of the Ebeano family.  In the end, he suggested that the electorate should discard the four candidates and look for credible, untainted alternatives from other parties. As erudite as his analysis and commentaries appeared to be, the implausibility of his recommendation was made obvious by his failure to mention some potential replacements of the four front runners from candidates of the other struggling political parties.

Over the months, starting from the buildup to the party primaries, Enugu State has witnessed a barrage of very distracting campaigns of calumny deliberately orchestrated by some candidates to undermine their most dreaded opponents. One has heard, seen and read some of the most obscene accusations of improprieties and purported pending trials by the EFCC.  For the sake of decency and fair contests, political candidates must be persuaded at this juncture to desist forthwith from personal attacks of their opponents. They should focus on issues of governance, leadership, security and our broken economy.

    HOPE IS NOT A STRATEGY

Beyond hoping on providence and the providential wind of change, it would appear that some candidates are not really investing in the 2023 elections. According to Vitus Ozoko (Odenigbo), among the four leading, governorship candidates, Peter Mbah of PDP appears to be the most prepared for leadership. Ozoko made this unequivocal statement after listening to Mbah’s presentations at a zoom meeting hosted by Enugu State people in Diaspora. The town hall meeting which had previously featured Edeoga and Frank Nweke, Jr. provided Mbah an opportunity to answer sundry questions related to his relationship with his former boss, His Excellency Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, the formation and ownership of Pinnacle Oil Company, and accusations of executive embezzlement of state funds while he was serving as commissioner for finance. In his statements, Ozoko posited that Mbah is the only candidate with a clear roadmap, a manual on how to rebuild, reposition, and revitalize Enugu State. For instance, in his manifesto, Mbah promises to aggressively tackle unemployment, work with relevant security agencies as well as mobilize stakeholders and communities. Furthermore, he proposes to deploy drones, close-circuit cameras and digital tracking systems to checkmate our spiraling insecurity. His manifesto is described as a Master Class, and his propositions inspire hope. In this wise, one can say that his strategy inspires hope, but hope is not his strategy.

    WHAT TO DO NOW

At a time like this when we are in the midst of extreme challenges, particularly challenges of heightened insecurity, a broken economy, and widespread poverty, we need a Good Samaritan, not an angel.  We need a Johnny-on-the-spot, someone able and willing to lead from the front, regardless of the mountains of dangers ahead. We need someone who will not be encumbered or distracted in office by sectional acrimonies or differences.

In conclusion, it is worth repeating with all seriousness that Enugu State is under attack by some gangs of merciless bandits, ruthless kidnappers and weaponized herdsmen. These foreign invaders have literally taken over the highways, farmlands and neighborhoods, and they are determined to snatch Enugu State from “the hands of God.”  A state of emergency must be declared ahead of Christmas and Enugu people must have the courage to rise up to take back the communities from these rampaging criminals before the state becomes a replica of many states in Nigeria that are now a den of terrorists.  As political campaigns intensify ahead of the 2023 elections, we must resolve to vote for a Good Samaritan, and we must resist those who cast aspersions on their opponents in attempts to rubbish their reputations instead of proffering solutions to our challenges. Such candidates are wolves in sheep’s clothing. The die is cast.

Court ruling: Enugu LP awaits Abuja directive – Chairman

The Enugu State Chairman of Labour Party (LP), Mr Casmir Agbo, has said the chapter is waiting for directives from the party’s Headquarter to conduct fresh gubernatorial primary.

He said this on Monday in a telephone interview with newsmen in Enugu in reaction to the recent Abuja Court ruling, which ordered a fresh gubernatorial primary while delivering judgment in a suit brought by Mr Everest Nnaji challenging the emergence of Mr Chijioke Edeoga as the LP candidate.

“We are waiting for directives from our national office to conduct a fresh primary as ordered by the Court,” he said.

Agbo, a Lawyer, said the party’s legal team is studying the judgment “and as soon as we receive directive we will move on.”

He urged the labour party faithful in the state to remain calm and focused, as the party is poised to taking the state in the 2023 election.

He blamed the ruling PDP for trying to distract the labour party, adding that, “no amount of distractions will stop a moving train.”

JUST IN: 5 family members die in questionable circumstances in Enugu

Five (5) family members have been reported dead in questionable circumstances in Enugu State. The unfortunate incident took place at the family’s apartment at Amutenyi village in Obollo-Afor community of Udenu Local Government Area.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the State, Mr Ahmed Ammani has ordered a full-scale investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the sudden and unnatural death of the family members.

This is contained in a statement issued in Enugu by the State’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe on Sunday.

Ndukwe disclosed that the unfortunate incident was reported to the police at about 9.25 a.m on September 8.

“The Commissioner has ordered the state Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (CIID) to conduct a full-scale investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the sudden and unnatural death of a family of five.

“One Mrs Chinyere Odoh, her two children – Udochukwu Odoh, 7, and Chukwuemeka Odoh, 4, as well as her two sisters, Martina Ezeme and Ngozi Ezeme.

“The Commissioner, while describing the incident as unfortunate and expressing his condolences to the family members and friends of the deceased persons, further directed that the investigation be thorough and concluded within the shortest possible time,” he stated.

Ndukwe, however, said that preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased persons went to bed the previous night and were not seen in the morning.

He said that their lifeless bodies were found in two separate rooms they slept in, when police operatives from Udenu Police Division, who swiftly responded to a distress call on the incident, forced open the doors of the rooms.

“They were immediately moved to the hospital and confirmed dead by doctors on duty, and their corpses were deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Further development will be communicated,” he said.
