The police command in Enugu State has rescued a kidnapped girl and detained three suspects for allegedly kidnapping her for rituals in Ishiagu community of Ezeagu Local Government of the state.

The Spokesman of the command, SP Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement on Wednesday in Enugu, said that the feat was achieved by police operatives attached to the Umumba Division on May 27, at about 3:15a.m.

Ndukwe said that the police operatives in collaboration with Neighbourhood Watch personnel and vigilant community members, successfully rescued a 13-year-old girl (names withheld), allegedly kidnapped for ritual murder, at Umuojor village in Ishiagu community.

According to him, the operation also led to the detaining of three male suspects connected to the crime.

“The prime suspect, said to be a native doctor and prominent member of the community, fled the scene and is currently at large.

“During the rescue, two decomposing bodies, one male and one female, were discovered buried in a concrete-sealed pit within an uncompleted building, owned and used as a shrine by the fleeing prime suspect.

“Investigations reveal that the deceased victims were recently murdered and buried in the pit by the suspects for ritual purposes, and the rescued child was moments away from suffering the same fate before the timely intervention,” he said.

The spokesman said that in line with its laws, the Enugu State Government had demolished the buildings owned by the fleeing prime suspect and used for the criminal enterprise.

“The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Mamman Giwa, who promptly visited the crime scene, has commended the efforts of the police operatives, local security groups, and community members, whose collaboration ensured the success of the operation.

“The commissioner also directed the Command’s Tactical Squads, as well as Investigation and Intelligence units , to intensify efforts in tracking down the fleeing suspect and other accomplices still at large, with a firm resolve to ensure justice is served,” he said.

Police detain 21-year-old, accomplices over staged kidnap

The Enugu State Police Command has detained 21-year-old Chidera Ako, along with his accomplices, for allegedly feigning his own kidnap and recovered N2 million ransom collected from his parents.

The command’s Spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement issued in Enugu on Tuesday.

Ndukwe noted that operatives, attached to Nsukka Sector of the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad, caught four suspects on May 24, at about 1p.m., for conspiracy, staged kidnap, and defrauding the parents of a staged kidnap victim of N2 million.

He gave the names of the suspects as Chidera Ako, 21; who orchestrated his own alleged kidnap; and Chidalu Okechukwu, 19.

Others were Ifeanyi Ugwu, 20; and Ossai Chigozie, 35; recently released from the Nigerian Correctional Service custodial centre.

He added that a locally-made single-barrel gun and two live cartridges were recovered from the suspects.

The statement read in part: “Ako was reported missing on May 4.

“Subsequently, on May 21, his accomplices used his phone to demand a N10 million ransom from his parents, sending a video of him bound, appearing beaten, with the recovered gun pointed at him.

“The parents pleaded for his release and paid N1.5 million into a provided account on May 22, but the suspects failed to release him.

“After an additional N.5 million payment, the police operatives swiftly arrested Ako and his accomplices at a POS centre during their attempt to withdraw the money.”

Ndukwe added that the suspects had confessed to the crime and would be arraigned upon completion of the ongoing investigations.

He noted that the Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr Mamman Giwa, who described the criminal act as unfortunate, had ordered further detention of anyone linked to the crime.

He further stated that the CP had charged the public to report suspected kidnap cases immediately and avoid hasty ransom payment, emphasising that “some cases, like this one, may be staged”.

The Labour Party (LP) members representing Igboeze/Udenu and Igboeze South/Nsukka Federal Constituencies, Mr Dennis Agbo and Mark-Chidi Obetta, respectively on Thursday defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu.

Defecting along with them were the member representing Nsukka West State Constituency, Mr Malachi-Okey Onyechi.

On Tuesday two LP chieftains, Prince Emeka Mamah and Titus Odo, defected to PDP barely two weeks after the LP governorship candidate for the 2023 elections, Chijioke Edeoga, dumped the LP for the PDP.

The decampees were members of the PDP who dumped the party during the 2023 general elections for the LP.

Speaking during the defection at the PDP Secretariat in Enugu, Onyechi expressed happiness to have united with his former party, pledging to work harmoniously to move the party forward.

He extolled Gov. Peter Mbah’s developmental strides, saying that he had instituted N2 billion project domiciled across 260 political wards in Enugu.

On his part, Obetta, explained that his return to the PDP was predicated on the development indices in Enugu especially on transport, education, health and hospitality.

“Enugu State will achieve more if everyone partner with Mbah,” he said.

Agbo also thanked his constituents for their understanding, describing them as great people.

  • Aviation Minister sheds light on Enugu airport closure

Aviation Minister sheds light on Enugu airport closure

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo has provided more information on the closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Mr Keyamo made clarifications on the closure of the airport after the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) announced it on Saturday.

The Aviation Minister confirmed that the closure is for two weeks, starting from April 22nd and that scheduled flight operations to Enugu will be diverted to other neighbouring airports.

“We have been compelled to take this decision to close the runway of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, for two weeks starting from April 22nd, 2025, in order to carry out major repair works on it.

“We sincerely apologise to Nigerians over this development as the airport is our major international gateway in the Southeastern part of Nigeria.

TNG recalls that the Enugu airport runway was shut in August 2019 for one year and a contract for total rehabilitation was awarded.

“I personally visited the airport some months after assuming office and expressed my total displeasure with the work done by the contractor,” Keyamo said.

He added: “Unfortunately, when we came to office, we discovered that waterlogged part of the runway was not properly constructed to take care of the problem, leading to constant cracks and potholes on the runway.

“These obviously put the lives of the travelling public at great risk. We have been carrying out constant palliative works on it, but the problem has not abated and the cracks on the runway are becoming craters”.

Keyamo went further to say: “In the meantime, scheduled flight operations to Enugu will be diverted to other neighbouring airports.

“We are going to work tirelessly to meet the timeline in order to mitigate the inconvenience this closure will cause the travelling public”.

  • BREAKING: FG shuts Enugu airport

    BREAKING: FG shuts Enugu airport

The Federal Government, through the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has  closed the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu for emergency runway repairs for two weeks.

The Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs Obiageli Orah disclosed this  in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.

According to Orah, there is a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.

She said that as a result, the emergency repairs would be conducted on the portion of the runway from April 22 to May 6.

“In compliance with the Nigerian civil aviation regulations, FAAN has, therefore, closed the runway during this period.

“As part of FAAN’s commitment to passenger safety and  modernisation of airport facilities, the runway will not be open for landings or takeoffs during the rehabilitation period.

“FAAN appeals to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time. All flights to this airport will be diverted to nearby airports.”

“The authority apologises for the late and unexpected notice regarding the closure.”

Domestic carriers like Air Peace and United Nigeria Airlines have suspended flight operations to the airport due to the  poor state of the runway.

In a  statement on Saturday, the Public Relations Officer of the  United Nigeria Airlines, Chibuike Uloka,  apologised for the disruption the development might have  on travel plans of  passengers this Easter.

“As a result, we have rescheduled your flights for today, April 19, to operate to and from the Chinua Achebe Airport, Anambra,  should this be convenient for you.

“Passengers willing to travel through Anambra Airport are kindly advised to be at the airport at the scheduled flight time,” he stated.

Also, the Air Peace Head of Corporate Communications, Dr Ejike Ndiulo,  said  the suspension of flight operations into and from the airport, would afford FAAN the needed opportunity to effectively fix the runway.

He said: “We regret to inform you that all flights scheduled to Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu are temporarily suspended due to safety concerns.

“The situation of the Enugu runway has been causing major disruptions to Air Peace flights, hence the decision to temporarily suspend further flights into this airport until further notice.”

  • Why I resigned from APC – Former Enugu Chairman, Ben Nwoye

Why I resigned from APC – Former Enugu Chairman, Ben Nwoye

The former Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Enugu State, Dr Ben Nwoye, has said he resigned from the APC due to unresolvable crisis within the party in the State and other South-East States.

Nwoye, who tendered his resignation to his APC Amurri Ward Chairman, said this in a statement he signed and issued to newsmen in Enugu on Thursday.

According to him, “with a deep sense of responsibility, I write to inform you that I hereby resign as a member of APC.

“My resignation is as a result of the disintegration of the leadership of the party in Enugu State.

“The bunch of the Broom which we painstakingly tied together in 2013 at a time when we were called unprintable names has loosened and permanently scattered.

“All efforts made by the party elders to gather the broom and reassemble it has failed. In its current form, further attempts to reassemble the broom in Enugu State is no longer practicable.

“What is left of the broom are two skeletal structures. One of each structures is held by two strong men. One of the strong men claims Chairmanship by judicial pronouncement.

“The other claims chairmanship through arrogant disobedience of the same judicial pronouncement aided by the silent approval of the National Leadership.”

Nwoye, who was Former Secretary Forum of APC State Chairmen, said that the leadership of the party in South-East was fully engaged in vindictive politics.

He said that they were not interested in adding another state to the two states the party controlled in the South-East, adding that to them, the supremacy of the party was measured by how low they could go to oppress their perceived political enemies.

Nwoye said, “These they do, without recourse to the core principles upon which APC stands – Justice, Peace and Unity. To say the least, the Zonal leadership in the South-East has lost direction.

“In the meantime, the National leadership of the Party is basking on the euphoria of power, being the party under which the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the majority of the members of the National Assembly were elected.

“The APC National Leadership has therefore maintained willful blindness. Hence, allowing the warring factions to self-destruct and strangulate the party in Enugu State.

“To worsen the situation, the APC National leadership treats party elders calls for reconciliation with disdain and disrespect. Loyal party members calling for party unity are treated like conquered and captured political warriors.”

Nwoye noted that loyal party members who did not agree with the position of the APC National leadership on the division that existed within the entire party structure in Enugu State had been transformed into prisoners of political war.

He said that they had been placed in political captivity in Enugu State.

“On the basis stated above, I engaged in extensive consultations with my grassroots followers and I have come to the conclusion that it is time to move on.

“I am not a political prisoner. I have never been and I can never be.

“The situation in Enugu State is not an isolated case. For example, in Anambra State, the National Leadership did not care to hear the voice of His Execellency, Sen. Chris Ngige, before awarding the gubernatorial ticket to the highest bidder.

“In Abia State, where are the likes of Dr Ikechi Emenike and Ayim Iyerenye?

“In Ebonyi State, where is the voice of Sen. Julius Ucha and in Imo State where is His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, and Ugwumba Uche Nwosu.

“These are great men who risked it all and made tremendous sacrifices to ensure that APC gained ground in the South-East. Today, their opinions no longer matter,” he added.

  • Enugu: Why we impeached Udenu LG legislative leader – Councillors

Enugu: Why we impeached Udenu LG legislative leader – Councillors

The Councillors in Udenu Council Area of Enugu State, says they impeached its Legislative Leader, Dr Nnamdi Odoh, due to his “overbearing disposition, high-handedness, and intimidation which were beyond tolerable limits”.

Also, the councillors disclosed that Odoh was impeached because of his false allegations against the Chairman of the Council, Mr Aka Eze Aka.

According to reports, Odoh was impeached on Tuesday.

Eight out of the ten councillors on Wednesday elected Mr Patrick Ugwu of Amala Ward as the new legislative leader of the council.

Speaking on behalf of other Councillors in a press conference on Thursday, the Majority Leader of the Legislative Council, Sunday Onah, said that rather than Odoh serving as a bridge between the executive and the legislature, he chose to serve only himself.

“Odoh fabricated a spurious allegation against Aka, claiming that the Ukwu Akpu—Ozo Ji—New Makurdi Road project was a mere 600 meters, while the chairman falsely claimed it to be two kilometers to siphon public funds”.

He added that upon thorough investigation, his claim was proven to be a malicious falsehood, intended to incite disaffection and chaos.

According to him, an independent review of the contract papers and budget proposal affirmed that the project was accurately measured at 600 meters, as officially documented.

“This deliberate misinformation was nothing short of legislative sabotage, a desperate attempt to erode the credibility of the chairman and paint the government of Udenu in a negative light.

“Yet, the reality remains that the Eze Aka-led administration has demonstrated transparency, inclusiveness, and a clear vision for development.

“The chairman has not only extended an open hand of collaboration to the legislative council but has also ensured that the welfare of councilors is prioritised.

“Evidence is in our memo dated Feb. 16, signed by all 10 Councilors of Udenu. In that document, we commended Aka for his inclusiveness and urged all political appointees to emulate his leadership style,” the majority leader said.

Onah added that in spite of their repeated counsel and appeals for Odoh to conduct himself in a manner befitting of his office, he persisted in bringing shame to the legislative council.

He recalled that On Feb. 6, at Solid FM, and Feb. 15, 2025 at Afia TV, respectively, Odoh made reckless, unverified, and highly embarrassing statements that cast the Enugu State Government in bad light.

According to him, the impeached council leader falsely claimed that councilors in Enugu State and the entire Southeast were the least remunerated in Nigeria.

He said he made these claims, in spite of plans of Gov. Peter Mbah’s administration to improve the welfare of councilors and ensure they playe active roles in project supervision within their wards.

“Despite being advised to retract those damaging statements, he stubbornly refused, maintaining his reckless rhetoric and ignoring the collective voice of the legislative council that he purportedly led.

“His utterances were never a reflection of our views, but a selfish misrepresentation of our collective position,” he explained.

He further alleged that during their first tenure that Odoh colluded with the executive arm in a manner that rendered the entire legislature impotent, resulting in a total lack of development in their respective Wards.

Meanwhile, Odoh, in press conference on Wednesday, told newsmen that he was being witch-hunted by the council chairman and accused him of embezzling public funds.

He added that Aka prevented them from carrying their oversight function of monitoring ongoing road infrastructure in the area.

When contacted, Aka described the allegations as unfounded, saying he had no power as council chairman to impeach any member of the legislative arm.

“I have always admonished them on need to harmoniously work as one to move the council forward,” Aka said.
