Court remands woman accused of breaking 3-year-old stepson’s leg with pestle

A magistrate court sitting in Enugu State has remanded a woman, identified as Ada Ogbogu, who allegedly beat her stepson with a pestle and broke his bone in the Enugu Correctional Centre.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls the incident was made known by a neighbour who heard the 3-year-old victim, named Kaitochikwu, crying, and upon breaking into the woman’s apartment, they found the boy unable to stand and his leg was dangling.

The police, while arraigning the accused on Tuesday, November 5, 2024,  told the court that Mrs. Ogbogu committed an act to cause grievous harm contrary to law, an offence that attracts life imprisonment as punishment if convicted.

The charge marked CME/646C/2024, reads, “That you, Ada Ogbogu, female, on the 23rd of October 2024, at about 1430hours at Ike Ani Estate, Emene Enugu, within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did with intent to maim or disfigure one Kaitobechukwu Ogbogu, male, aged 3 years, pour hot water on his nose, mouth and hit him with a pestle, which dislocated his left leg and caused him serious bodily harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 288 (a) of the Enugu State Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II. Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria 2004.”

Chief Magistrate Alphonsus Edeh, rejected her bail application, after which ordered that she remand at the Correctional Centre.

The court then adjourned the matter to 26th November 2024 when the report from the Director of Public Prosecutions, Ministry of Justice, Enugu, is expected.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, told newsmen that Mrs. Ogbogu’s arraignment was in line with the administration’s vow to follow the matter to a logical conclusion, insisting that no child should be dehumanised in Enugu State.

“Recall that the State Government had taken swift action on this matter by arresting the accused and today she is already in court. This decisive move demonstrates Governor Peter Mbah’s commitment to protecting children. So, if you mistreat or abuse any child in Enugu State, then you are in for trouble. Period,” she stated.

Police advise Enugu residents to disregard sit-at-home order

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Kanayo Uzuegbu, has advised residents of the state to disregard the Monday and Tuesday sit-at-home order.

The advice is contained in a statement issued by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Daniel Ndukwe, and made available to newsmen in Enugu on Sunday.

The statement warned that any attempt by any individual or group to disrupt the peace and security in the state would be met with “decisive and ruthless action”.

It described the order, which was circulated in a viral video by an unidentified individual and the reasons for it, as “baseless, unwarranted and a deliberate attempt to incite fear and unrest in the state”.

The commissioner emphasised that “Enugu State has long moved past such criminally motivated, illegal sit-at-home calls or orders”.

According to him, such illegal sit-at-home calls are designed to destabilise social, economic and psychological well-being of the people under the guise of secessionist agitations.

“I encourage citizens to carry on with their lawful activities without fear or intimidation. The police, in collaboration with other security agencies, are fully prepared to maintain the peace and security across the state,” he added.

The commissioner urged parents and guardians to warn their children and wards against being used for any act inimical to the peace and security of the state.

“The legal consequences of such involvements will be dire,” he stated.

He enjoined the people to stay vigilant, law-abiding, and report suspicious activities or individuals to the nearest police station.

“For emergencies, the public can contact the Command via the following numbers: 08032003702, 08098880172, 08086671202 or infoenugupolice@gmail.com,” he added.

  • Why I donated N200m for education within one week – Peter Obi

Why I donated N200m for education within one week – Peter Obi

Presidential Candidate of Labour Party in 2023, Mr Peter Obi, says he donated over N200 million within a  week for education in a bid to provide future for the younger generation.

Obi made  this known  during the 70th Anniversary of Queens School Enugu organised by Queens School Old Girls Association (QSEOGA), on Saturday.

“On Monday, I was in Onitsha where they started a new university. From there, I went to Borromeo College of Nursing.

“On Tuesday, I was at Anyigba in Kogi State to attend to students’ needs and on Thursdays, I was in Almajiri School in Kaduna to attend to their needs also. I have donated over N200 million within the week on education,” he said.

While emphasising the importance of investing in education, Obi said that no country would succeed without education. He said that he was investing in the future of the young ones to discourage them from crime.

Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, said that the future of any country would depend on its investment in health and education.

He decried the state of Queen School Enugu which, he said, had produced  many great people but had lost its glory due to negligence.

“Those of you who studied in this school will be wondering how we got here. A school that has been celebrated  has turned to nothing to be celebrated about.

“I am urging to you pull your resources together toward rebuilding this school. My appeal to old girls of this school and others in Nigerians is: Let’s go back and fix our schools than build new ones.”

He pledged to partner with the  association to give a facelift  to the school.

Earlier in her remarks, the National President of the association, Mrs Ifeanyi Egbunike, said that many things had gone wrong with the school. She said that the school lacked new structures.

“I graduated from this school in 1974, and we are celebrating Queen School because it has come a long way. I am celebrating 50 year of being part of the school.

“The school has groomed and added value to many. We chose Obi because he was a man with  vision, he is result-oriented and a  lover of education,” Egbunike said.

The Chairperson of Enugu Chapter of the association, Mrs Maureen Atuonwu, said that Queen School Enugu was established in Oct. 4, 1954.

She said that alumni of the school came from all over the world to celebrate it at 70 years, adding that the association  was working toward uplifting it.

“We have come together to discuss  ways of rebuilding this school, as government alone cannot do it.

“We are partnering with Enugu State Government to see how we can take this school to greater heights.

“This school has produced a lot of professionals, who excelled in their various fields of endeavour, including Prof. Ngozi Okwonjo-Iweala,” Atuonwu said.

  • EFCC denies arresting radio presenter on air

EFCC denies arresting radio presenter on air

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has denied arresting a presenter, while on air, or disrupting lawful activities at Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu State on Monday. Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesman, said this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

According to Oyewale, contrary to the claim of the radio station, the operatives of the anti-graft agency did not tamper with the equipment of the radio station.

He said that the operatives of the commission comprising four officers had on Monday went to Urban Radio 94.5FM, Enugu to invite one Favour Ekoh, host of Prime Time, a programme running at the station.

”Ekoh is being investigated by the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the EFCC in an alleged N700 million Ponzi scheme fraud involving 50 victims.

”According to the victims, he allegedly lured them into investing in a scheme “Life Trading” in a company, Leverage Index Limited.

“They were offered returns on investment of 10 per cent of their capitals after a period of time.

”They alleged that after investing their money into the company located at No. 1, Colliery Street, Okpara Avenue, Enugu, the company closed its office with no return on investment or principal returned to them.

”Ekoh remained the only link the victims could hold,” he said.

He said that operatives of the commission, who approached the radio station, holding a warrant of arrest for Ekoh, identified themselves.

He said that instead of allowing them to carry out their assignment, they were held hostage by the station.

”Faced with such hostility, they called for a rescue team, which eventually arrested the Station Manager, Mr Bamikole Owoyomi, Ekoh and the two security guards that locked them within the premises of the station.

”Ekoh was neither arrested while on air nor any disruption of the lawful activities of the Radio Station took place.

”No equipment of the station was tampered with and she and others have since been released after being allowed to make statements at the EFCC Office in Enugu,” he said.

According to him, the EFCC holds the media in high esteem as the fourth estate of the realm.

”They are critical stakeholder in the fight against economic and financial crimes and other acts of corruption

”However, the precipitate and unlawful obstruction of officers of the commission from carrying out their duties by staff of the radio station is unacceptable.

”Besides, the professional credentials of Ekoh, a principal suspect in a ponzi scheme to the tune of N700m affecting 50 innocent Nigerians, are questionable.

”The commission hereby calls on the International Press Institute and the Nigerian Union of Journalists to investigate the conduct of the station in the light of integrity and ethical professional practice,” he said.

  • Enugu govt clarifies mortuary tax

    Enugu govt clarifies mortuary tax

The Enugu State Government says the Enugu Mortuary Tax is not meant to generate revenue but to discourage people from taking their dead ones to mortuary.

The Executive Chairman, Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), Mr Emmanuel Nnamani, said this while reacting to Mortuary Tax circular addressed to all the Mortuary Attendants in the state trending online.

According to the circular, ESIRS in line with the provisions of section 34 of the Birth, Deaths and Burials Law Cap 15 Revised Laws of Enugu State 2004, hereby approves the implementation of Mortuary tax.

“The sum of N40.00 only is to be paid by owners of a corpse once it was not buried within twenty-four hours. The amount continues to count on daily basis.

“Kindly ensure that owners of corpses make the payments before collection of the corpses for burial and then remit same to the ESIRS in any commercial bank under mortuary tax in Enugu State IGR Account,” the circular said.

Reacting to concerns raised Nnamani explained that the tax was not new to the state, adding that it was within the Enugu State Mortuary Tax Law which had been in existence for years

He also alleged that some social media users changed the date on the circular to make it look like new thing, clarifying that the amount to pay was only N40 not N40,000.

“It is an indirect tax paid by mortuary owners not deceased family and it just N40 not N40,000. Since its introduction nobody has been denied burying their dead ones.

“It means that that corpse stays in mortuary for 100 day the mortuary is expected to pay to state sum of N4000.

“The tax is not meant to generate revenue but to discourage people from taking their dead ones to mortuary all the time,” Nnamani stressed.

The governor said that the talking and campaign as well as honeymoon were over, and it was time for them to walk the talk.

“What you did here today is executing your own part of the social contract that you have with the people. Those promises that you made to them, this is time for action.

He admonished them to lead people+focused government by ensuring that people were at the centre of their governance module, as well as nurturing a sense of inclusion to banish feelings of alienation.

  • CNG: Enugu govt creates new ministry

CNG: Enugu govt creates new ministry

The Enugu State Government has begun the process of transitioning from the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to reduce cost of transportation for commuters.

The Commissioner for Transport, Dr Obi Ozor made the disclosure while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting in Enugu on Friday.

According to him, the state Executive Council resolved that it is very important for the state and her citizens to begin the process of transitioning from petrol to CNG.

He explained that the CNG saved about half of the cost of fueling and transportation as well as helping the operators within the transport sector and reduces the cost of transportation.

He disclosed that the government was going to invest more in buying buses and also supporting the private sector to invest in the transport space in the state.

”All these are geared towards bringing safe, affordable and sustainable transportation system in Enugu State.

“With CNG, the state is creating an enabling environment to attract the right investors and has engaged in partnership with Greenville Energy,” he added.

He, however, urged those interested in the conversion of their vehicles from petrol to CNG to come to the ministry of transport to be registered, stressing that they would work with the Federal Ministry of Transport to get the CNG kits.

The government also approved transitional Energy process from Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to Compressed Natural Gas(CNG) for transport in the state.

Also speaking, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, Secretary to the State Government, announced that the state government has created a new Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to regulate investment in the sector.

Onyia said Gov. Peter Mbah had earlier signed the Enugu State Electricity Law and that the law required an independent regulator to be set up.

This, he said, needed a supervisory ministry that would handle all engagements in the energy space and in the mineral resource, considering the level of mineral resources availability in Enugu State.

He said, ”Government has decided at the Exco meeting today to create Energy and Mineral Resources ministry whose mandate includes the oversight of most of our investment opportunities within the solid mineral space.

“This will also help to catalyze investments in the renewable energy space and in our coal to power space.

“Exco resolved that this new ministry will take effect immediately and we will start the process of setting up the office,” Onyia said.

He added that budgetary allocation had been set up when the regulator was set up, saying they were doing structural things for now.

“The appointments will now be the next step of what His Excellency will direct. For now, we are trying to make sure that we create the opportunities by creating offices, right people and the needed workforce.

“Because this is a highly technical ministry, we are going to make sure all these things are in place while the Honorable Commissioner for Transport will superintend over it.

On the difference between the ministry of Energy, Mining and Environment, he said they were different and play different roles.

“One plays a role that complements the other one. So, with the ministry of Energy, we are looking across the board different sources of energy to energy, power, gas to power and coal to power. All these things have environmental component,” Onyia said.

He added that the action of government was tailored towards reducing carbon footprint, stressing that the two ministries would complement each each other rather than duplicating roles.

  • Enugu polls: PDP sweeps all 260 councillorship seats

Enugu polls: PDP sweeps all 260 councillorship seats

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won all the 260 political ward councillorship seats  in the 17 Local Government Areas in Enugu State during the council polls held on Saturday.

Prof. Christian Ngwu, the Chairman of Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC), stated this while declaring the results on Monday in Enugu.

Ngwu said the commission delayed the announcement of the councillorship election results because it was scrutinising them.

ENSIEC had earlier on Sunday declared PDP winner of all the 17 Chairmanship positions in the state.

Ngwu, also the returning officer for the polls, said that ENSIEC carefully collated and analysed the results to ensure no mistakes or infractions to the electoral law.

“PDP won all 260 ward councillorship positions within the 260 political wards in the state.

“The election was duly conducted and it was most peaceful, fair, free and credible.

“ENSIEC ensured a level playing field for all 17 political parties that participated in the Polls held on Saturday.

“Full details of the councillorship election will come out and be made known to the public subsequently,” he said.

According to him, Certificate of Return will soon be issued by the commission to the winners of the chairmanship and councillorship positions.

The chairman said there was no substantial record of violence during the polls on Saturday.

“The commission is not aware of any violence or breakdown of law and order during the polls,” he said.

  • LG election in Enugu marred by controversy

LG election in Enugu marred by controversy

The All Progressives Congress (APC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Labour Party (LP) protested the exclusion of result sheets at polling units in Enugu State on Saturday. The protest began when Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) officials arrived at polling units at 9:40 a.m. without the essential documents.

At polling units 008, 020, 003, 002, and 001, located at Christ Church, Enugu South Council, APC and LP agents refused to proceed with the election until result sheets were provided. A Labour Party agent, who wished to remain anonymous, told NAN: ‘ENSIEC provided other materials, but the result sheets were missing.

“The Supervisory Presiding Officer claimed she had the results, but would only bring them in the afternoon for the Presiding Officer to enter scores.”

An APC agent who also pleaded anonymity corroborated this, stating: ‘There will be no election without result sheets. APGA’s Acting Chairman, Mr Ekene Uzodimma, reported similar issues in Awgu Ward nine, where election materials arrived without result sheets.

“Many polling units in my ward have not received materials by 11 a.m.”

APGA Councillor for Trans-Ekulu Ward, Mr Okeke Fidelis, said his entire ward had not received election materials. Another APGA Collation Agent, Uche, was denied entry at Enugu North Council Area, allegedly due to only PDP agents being allowed.

In Udi Council Areas, APGA Chairmanship candidate, Mr Chukwuemeka Ochi, reported that many polling units were yet to receive election materials. It was observed a low voter turnout at many polling units visited in Enugu South Council Area.

Low turnout, late arrival of materials mar Enugu LG election

The Local Government Election in Enugu on Saturday was marred by low turnout of voters and late arrival of voting materials at various polling units and wards.

Correspondents who monitored the election in Enugu South Local Government Area, observed that there was low turnout in most wards, particularly in Igbariam primary school ward 7 and the Union Boys Secondary School ward 8 respectively.

It was observed that there was presence of security personnel at the wards visited even as people were going about their normal duties.

At Igbariam primary school and Union Boys Secondary School, voting materials had not arrived as at 10am. A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agent at Ward 8 Unit 7, who spoke on condition of anonymity, attributed the low turnout to the experience of the 2023 general election.

“There is low turnout of voters as you can see, people are not coming out to vote because the last general election has discouraged everyone from coming out to cast their votes,” he said.

Also speaking at lgbariam Primary School Ward 7 Unit 2, one of the electorates, Mrs Chika Eze said that in spite of security presence at the ward, only few number of people turned out to cast their votes.

“With the presence of security agents around the voting centre, only few people came to cast their votes,” she said.

It was a similar situation in Awgu, Transekulu, Obiagu and Independence Layout as voting materials were yet to arrive while the electorates were seen trickling in.

Meanwhile, the roads are almost empty as there was few vehicular movements while some shops were open for businesses.

It was observed that businesses were slow as few business owners were with their goods at various wards with low patronage.

Enugu LG polls: Early morning downpour delays arrival of materials, officials

Early morning  downpour on Saturday  has delayed arrival of electoral  materials and officials in some polling booths in Enugu.

The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) had fixed  Sept. 21, as election day for the 17 chairmanship and 260 ward councilorship positions in the state.

After the  down pour, the  materials distribution centre in Enugu South Local Government Area, started sorting out materials for onward distribution to polling units.

One of the officials, who simply gave his name as Kelvin, said that the distribution centre witnessed delay due to the rain.

“However, we have concluded the sorting and vehicles have started  dispatching  non sensitive and sensitive materials, as well as electoral officials  to the respective polling units,” he said.

It was gathered that voting would be done manually by ENSIEC. 17 political parties are participating in the election and the state have over two million eligible voters expected to participate in the election.

The election would cover 4,145 polling units; while 12,800 ad hoc electoral staff, hundreds of electoral staff and 17 electoral officers were trained and deployed for the election.

A total of 4,145 security personnel had been deployed to ensure a hitch-free election.
