Enugu APC guber candidate, Uche Nnaji unveils running mate

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State in 2023, Chief Uche Nnaji, on Sunday unveiled Chief George Ogara as his running mate.

Making the declaration at the party’s zonal secretariat in Enugu, Nnaji said the process of choosing a running mate was Herculean because of the quality and qualification of the person required.

He praised God that he finally found a professional and an astute politician as running mate.

“I have been able to get a professional and an astute politician as deputy. I have been able to get Chief George Ogara as my running mate.

“I believe he will add value and impetus to our campaign efforts and in giving Enugu State people good governance when we emerge victorious in 2023,’’ he said.

Nnaji added that he was currently visiting the 260 wards in the state on a “thank-you’’ tour and the exercise had given him the opportunity to determine the level of infrastructural decay in the state.

He stressed that infrastructure would be put on the front burner after becoming governor in 2023.

In his remarks, the state’s chairman of the party, Chief Ugochukwu Agballah, thanked Nnaji for the choice of Ogara whom he described as a lawyer par excellence and philanthropist of note.

“Today we are re-invigorated for the final onslaught to take over Enugu State in 2023.

“We call on traditional and religious leaders and every lover of Enugu State to rise against the ignoble machinations of opportunistic cabals that have been wrecking Enugu State,’’ he said.

In his acceptance speech, Chief Ogara appreciated the governorship candidate and the party for finding him worthy to serve as deputy governor.

“I will play my role and help to pay attention to the minute details that will help our party to achieve victory.

“I will also be loyal to the party and to my principal. We shall do everything necessary to get to the seat of power,’’ he stressed.

  • There is no Obidient party, they are noise makers – Sen Nnamani

There is no Obidient party, they are noise makers – Sen Nnamani

Senator representing Enugu East Senatorial District, Chimaroke Nnamani has said that there is no party called Obidient and describes Peter Obi’s supporters as noise makers.

Nnamani claimed that the Labour Party presidential candidate supporters, who are known as Obidients, are less than 0.25 percent of the entire 200 million Nigerians.

In a recent post on his Facebook page, the lawmaker stated that his followers belong to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and that they cannot labour for another party to inherit.

According to him, if the ‘Obidient Movement’ is for only Peter Obi, it should not have spread to other positions, including the governorship and Assembly seats.

He wrote, “There is no Obidient PARTY! The name is LABOUR Party. A political party with candidates in all offices, including governorship.

“Our party and platform is different and that is PDP. FACT If we blur the distinction and foolishly vote Obidient that is Labour Party for President?

“For the minority ELITES it is easy to reverse 2 weeks later! For the majority over 98percent that is major “confuse “as they say on the Streets” Confuse Yamaru” as Umu Asadu will put it!

“Remember these advocates are Noisy, Loud, Intolerant, Proselytizers, Condescending but less than 0.25percent of our 200 million population. That is a generous guess of those propagandists controlling the NARRATIVE. Only a narrative.

“If Obidient is Peter Obi only why field candidates in other offices? Why do we establish foundation and beach head for Labour Party? In battle do you give invaders your beach head to Land (please forgive my war analogy, for want of more graphic example) and now seek to drive them away? ebeanoFAM answer my question. The answer is blowing in the wind”.

INEC suspends ward level CVR in Igboeze North LGA over attack on officials

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) at the ward level in Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, following the attack on its officials in the area.

This is contained in a statement by Festus Okoye, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, in Abuja on Thursday.

Okoye said that INEC Administrative Secretary in Enugu State, Mr Jude Okwuonu, reported that at about 2.30 pm on Wednesday,  the commission officials involved in the CVR were attacked by gunmen in the Community Primary School Umuopu in Umuozzi Ward 19 of Igboeze North Local Government Area.

“The gunmen fired sporadically into the air to disperse registrants and registration officials. In the ensuing stampede, one of our staff sustained injuries and is receiving treatment in a hospital.

“However, two voter registration machines and personal items of the staff such as mobile phones were lost.

“Consequently, the ward level registration of voters in Igboeze North is hereby suspended,” Okoye said.

He recalled that on July 3, INEC office in Igboeze North Local Government Area was burnt down by unknown arsonists.

Okoye said that in spite of the attack, the INEC was able to continue with ward-level registration with the assistance of vigilantes provided by the local government authority adding that “it is one of the centres that has now been attacked.”

Okoye said that the incident had been reported to the police for investigation.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, presented a Certificate of Return to the party’s gubernatorial candidate for Enugu State, Frank Nweke Jr.

Nweke emerged the party’s gubernatorial candidate after scoring 273 votes to beat four other aspirants at the party primary which was held in Enugu on May 29, 2022.

In his remarks, Nweke reiterated his commitment to providing the right leadership that tackles immediate challenges such as the water crisis, economic deprivation, and insecurity while strategically setting Enugu State on the path of sustainable progress.

“My promise remains hinged on restoring human dignity, first by ensuring all citizens of Enugu have access to basic human needs of water, power, education, and the freedom to dream. We must have sanity restored to our communities, engage with partners and investors to build infrastructure, and restore the glorious industrialisation that we are known for”

Presenting the certificate was the APGA national chairman, Dr. Victor Oye.

*He congratulated the Party’s flagbearer and noted that he is one of Nigeria’s finest. The Chairman further reiterated his confidence in his pedigree and his considerable experience in public administration which puts him heads and shoulders above rival candidates”

  • 2023: Gov. Ifeanyi’s aide organises Inter-Party Sports Festival

Special Assistant to Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu on Inter-Party Affairs, Mr Matthias Madus, has organised an Inter-Party Youths Sports Festival (IYSF) among political parties in the South-East in a bid to end electoral violence in the region.

Madus said the gesture was to unite youths from different political parties in the South-East in love and understanding.

He disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Tuesday in Enugu.

According to him, he said, this would reduce the rising insecurity, brutality and violence among party faithful and loyalists during elections, adding that major people who perpetrated these crimes were youths.

He said that IYSF would hold between Aug. 1 and 10, with football matches between youths of the various political parties and other special attractions such as music hunts and beauty pageants, to promote peace.

“So, the organising sports festival of this nature among them will change their understanding and perception about politics.

“Rather than seeing politics as do-or-die affair, we hope to change their orientation and reduce electoral crimes during elections.

“It will help to build people’s confidence in our politics, bridge gaps and deepens our democracy.

“I will tell the young artistes to use their songs to discourage electoral violence while ladies will use their beauty through beauty pageant (Miss Political) to promote peace,” Madus said.

According  to him, IYSF will serve as a tool to ignite the minds of the youth to love and be peaceful as these are key to political developments.

He added that the sports festival would also restore inter-party broken relationships, and encourage political participation among the youth.

This, he noted, was in line with Gov. Ugwuanyi’s effort to ensure that people enjoyed peace and tranquillity in the state.

“Therefore, I will use the event to educate party supporters on need to concentrate their energies in loving and promoting their parties and their manifestoes than criticising and condemning others.

“So far, I have been in consultation with political parties and many of them have showed willingness to participate, saying it will take youths to the right direction,” he said.

He, however, said that there would be a registration fee of N5,000 by participating party teams and donations from well-meaning Nigerians.

Madus, therefore, appealed to individuals, organisations and governments for financial support to help in the quest to stop electoral violence in the country.

  • 2023: NUJ urge political parties to stop barring members from covering their activities

2023: NUJ urge political parties to stop barring members from covering their activities

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has urged political parties in Enugu State to desist from barring its members from covering their activities/programmes ahead of 2023 general elections.

Mr Sam Udekwe, the Chairman of NUJ, Enugu State Chapter, made the call during a telephone interview with newsmen on Thursday in Enugu, following the debarment of journalists by some political parties in the state.

Thenewsguru.com recalled that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had, in their South-East Governorship Screening and Ward Congress to elect delegates in Enugu, barred journalists from covering the event.

Thenewsguru.com reports that the seven-member panel that conducted the screening at the PDP Zonal Office, Enugu in April, refused to address newsmen after they had waited up to 6:30pm.

Udekwe, who described the action as condemnable, said the constitution empowers journalists to do certain duties which they are debarred from.

“As parties are allowed to carry out their activities, they should not deny the media theirs.

“What we know as democracy is not actually what we see all over the country. People carry out their duties without minding infringing into the right of other institutions.

“Freedom of Information Act is there but how often are they accepting these laws, they are supposed to be implemented.

“We are not investigating any political party but to propagate their activities selflessly,” he said, and appealed to political parties to cooperate with the media.

He said, “The media have the right to hold government accountable for the people and we cannot do this assignment if barred.

“They should support us and we promise that we will not be lopsided in our reportage.

“Political parties should give media in the state the latitude to serve them better,” Udekwe said.

  • President Buhari lauds Gov. Umahi on quality projects in Ebonyi

President Buhari lauds Gov. Umahi on quality projects in Ebonyi

President Muhammadu Buhari has commended Gov. Dave Umahi of Ebonyi on the quality of projects in the State.

Buhari expressed satisfaction with his performance saying he was not surprised at the standard of work because the two-time governor is an engineer of repute.

Thenewsguru.com reports that the president began his two-day visit to the State with the inauguration of projects at the state-owned King David University of Medical Sciences, Uburu.

The projects included a twin flyover, 12-kilometre dualised Federal Road, from Mbu, Enugu State to Uburu, the University Building and the University Medical Hospital, Facilities and Equipment.

At his first stop in the State for the inauguration of the 700-metre length twin-flyover (also called King David’s University flyover), constructed at the cost of N2 billion by the State government, President Buhari said:

”I am not an Engineer by discipline but my eyes are very clear, even through my eyeglasses.

”I am impressed with this performance and I know the projects will last. I congratulate the Governor on this feat and I am pleased to be associated with it.”

While in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area of the State, the president also inaugurated the Cancer Centre at the King David University of Medical Sciences, built and equipped by the Federal Government under TETFUND.

Umahi, who thanked the president for approving the funding of the Centre, said the facility could rank with other centres around the world.

”It is in the same standard as Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) and the State government also contributed to the project to bring it to completion,” he said.

At the inauguration of the hospital section of the university, the governor thanked the president for acceding to the request of the State government on the Federal Government to take over the running of the teaching hospital.

”This hospital is beyond the scope of any State government to run and we have been celebrating your approval of our request and are very proud that you are here to commission it yourself.

”You have left a lot of indelible marks in the development of this centre of excellence and it will never be forgotten,” he said.

At the inauguration of the Presidential Lodge at the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Onueke, the governor announced that the tarmac and runway of the airport, built with concrete, had attained over 70 per cent completion, and would be ready by the end of next month.

The president also inaugurated the five kilometres dualised airport road in Onueke, built by the State government as well as the reconstructed St Margaret Umahi International Market complex and a 750-metre length twin-flyover near the market.

The Muhammadu Buhari Presidential Lodge, Abakaliki, was also inaugurated by the president on Thursday.

  • Former APC Chairman reacts to purported expulsion from party

Former APC Chairman reacts to purported expulsion from party

The immediate past Chairman of Enugu State All Progressive Congress (APC), Dr. Ben Nwoye, has dismissed reports of his purported expulsion from the party.

TheNewsGuru(TNG), had reported earlier that Nwoye and six others were expelled from APC for alleged anti-party activities.

Reacting to the announcement in Enugu on Wednesday of his expulsion from the party to newsmen, Nwoye described Chief Ugochukwu Agballa, state Chairman of APC, as a political entertainer, insisting that he (Agballa) is not a member of the Enugu State APC.

According to him, the act is a sham, which holds no water.

He noted that “one whose membership is still in dispute like Agballa, lacks such powers to sack any member”.

“Agballa, whose membership of the party and emergence as Chairman are still under contention in court ought to have taken time to study the APC’s constitution first, especially as someone who joined the ruling party from opposition Peoples Democratic party (PDP)., rather than engaging in a Macabre dance and political entertainment show,” he said.

Nwoye, a serving Federal Commissioner in the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission representing South-East, said it was quite unfortunate that one who claims to be State Chairman of a political party does not understand relevant sections of the party’s constitution.

He noted “because Agballa is not a member of the party that is why he does not know that APC has a constitution where processes of sanctioning erring members found wanting are stipulated”.

Nwoye explained that his resolve not to hand over to Agballa was born out of the fact that his membership of the party is still in dispute, adding that there are pending lots of litigation in that regard.

He said he is ever ready to hand over all the APC properties under his custody to the national secretariat, rather than handing them over to a non-member of the party parading himself as chairman.

He, however, urged the party’s National Chairman, Sen. Adamu Abdulahi, to revisit the Enugu APC Crisis, Reconciliatory Committee report which he chaired himself, with a view to doing the needful, so as to save the party from total collapse in the state.

TNG recall that on Wednesday, Agballa, through Mr Robert Ngwu, State Secretary of the party, announced the ratification of Nwoye’s purported suspension leading to his expulsion from the party over his alleged refusal to hand over.

Nwoye and five other foundation members of the party, including a former Military Governor of Gombe State, Group Capt. Joe Orji (retired), have equally been expelled.
