    NDLEA invades eateries in Plateau, Enugu, recovers drugged cakes, cocaine

    Five persons have been detained by operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, after raiding some eateries in Jos, the Plateau State capital where freshly baked cakes made with cannabis sativa were recovered in addition to 48.726 kilogrammes of assorted psychotropic substances.

     

    The Plateau Commander, Ibrahim Braji, who announced the arrest, gave the names of the drug joints raided as KNL Lounge located along Lamingo Road and another branch along Mining Quarters, Rantya Low-Cost Estate, as well as Tuscany Lounge on Azaki Avenue, all within Jos metropolis.

     

    Besides the drugged cakes called brownie recovered from the three eateries, psychotropic substances also seized include Barcadin Codeine 14kg; Flunitrazapem 355.5 grammes; Tramadol, 370.1 grammes; Exol-5, 30kg; Diazepam 2.5kg and Pentazocine 1.5 kg, totalling 48.726kg.

     

    In another development, a 28-year-old lady, Oodo Ndidiamaka, was arrested with 80.23 grammes of cocaine and 3.81grammes of methamphetamine when operatives of the agency in Enugu State raided the Nsukka axis of the state capital.

     

    Meanwhile, operatives of the Niger State Command of the agency also arrested a 24-year-old 400-level student of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Abel Godwin Idio. He was arrested in Gidan Kwano within the vicinity of the University for selling two strong variants of cannabis: Arizona and Loud, concealed in textbooks.

     

     

    The state commander of the agency, Haruna Kwetishe, said Abel used the inner pages of his textbooks to hide the drugs within the campus to sell.

    BREAKING: Unknown gunmen invade Enugu police station, kill officers

    Unknown gunmen have allegedly attacked the Divisional Police Headquarters, Adani in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State.

    The attack was said to have happened in the early hours of Wednesday.

    Two of the police officers on duty were reportedly murdered and several others injured, while the police station was burnt.

    Sources confirmed that the attack on the police station started at about 2:30am and lasted for about one hour.

    TheNewsGuru reports that in recent weeks, Police stations in the South East and some states in the South-South have been attacked by gunmen.

    Recall that on Monday April 19. unidentified hoodlums razed the zone 13 police headquarters in Ukpo, Anambra state.

    Spanish La Liga/NPFL U15 football tournament begins in Enugu

    The Spanish La Liga/Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) U-15 tournament began on Thursday in Enugu, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

    The tournament being sponsored by the NPFL and Spanish La Liga has the Enugu State Government and the League Management Company (LMC) as co-hosts.

    In the first match of the day, Enyimba International Under-15 Football Club of Aba held their counterparts from Dakkada FC of Uyo to a 1-1 draw.

    The match was decided at the main bowl of Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu.

    Emmanuel Edem of Dakkada FC opened scoring in the 28th minute, while Enyimba FC equalised in the 59th minute through Chidiuto Emelda.

    In other matches, Jigawa Golden Stars FC played out a goalless draw with Kwara United FC, while Akwa United FC of Uyo beat Abia Warriors FC of Umuahia 1-0.

    Samuel Effiong scored the only goal of the match in the 48th minute.

    In an interview, Head Coach of Akwa United, Edward Green, praised his players for their resilience which helped them to win the match.

    Green, however, said the players still had enough room for improvement in the course of the competition.

    Also, Head Coach of Abia Warriors FC, Emenike Ezeugwu, expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance in spite of the defeat.

    “The team did not have enough time to prepare before the tournament began due to the short notice given to us,” he said.

    The coach said the club still had three matches to play in the tournament and he expected the players to respond positively in subsequent matches.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament will end on May 2.

    Police arrest 2 over female corpse found along Enugu road

    The Police Command in Enugu State has arrested two suspects over the corpse of a young lady found in the gutter along Presidential Road, Independence Layout of Enugu metropolis.

    The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Daniel Ndukwe, said in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu that the deceased had been identified as Miss Chiamaka Orji, 20 years old.

    Ndukwe said that the Command was appealing to the general public to aid the police with useful information that would lead to the arrest and prosecution of all perpetrators involved in the crime.

    He said that the body was evacuated to the hospital, following information received in the early hours of March 29 by police operatives attached to New Haven Police Division, Enugu.

    The police spokesman said that she was confirmed dead by a doctor on duty at the hospital and her corpse was deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

    “The Commissioner of Police, Mr Mohammed Aliyu, has ordered the state’s Criminal Investigation Department to carry out a full scale investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of the young lady.

    “To this end, the Commissioner also advised young persons in the state to be wary of whom they go out with to avoid becoming victims of such despicable acts.

    “He enjoins the general public, especially residents of Enugu metropolis, to assist the police with useful information that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of all the assailants,” Ndukwe said.

    The Enugu State Commissioner for Transport, Chief Mathias Ekweremadu, is dead.

    The deceased, who is the cousin of the immediate past Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, died in Enugu on Thursday.

    A close family member, who preferred anonymity, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the commissioner slumped during an interaction with the Enugu State House of Assembly Committee on Transport led by a member representing Enugu East Rural constituency, Mr Hillary Ugwu.

    The family source and another member of the assembly who also pleaded anonymity said the deceased was rushed to the Niger Foundation Hospital where he was confirmed dead.

    NAN correspondent who visited the late Ekweremadu’s residence at CKC Close, off Nawfia Street, Independence Layout, Enugu reports that sympathizers were seen trooping to the house.

    They included some members of the state Executive Council, legislators friends and kinsmen while his wife, Stella, who was still in shock, was surrounded by female friends and relatives.

    The late Ekweremadu was a two term Chairman of Aninri Local Government Area and a former member representing Aninri constituency in the state assembly.

    APC rejects Enugu Assembly by-election, alleges irregularities

    The All Progressives Congress (APC), in Enugu State has rejected the outcome of the Dec. 5 Isiuzo State Constituency election in Enugu State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the seat became vacant following the death of the former member representing the constituency, Mr Chijioke Ugwueze.

    NAN also reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had declared the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Mrs Amaka Ugwueze and wife of the deceased lawmaker as the winner of the election.

    However, members of the APC from Isiuzo Local Government Area of the state on Monday staged a peaceful protest at the INEC office in Enugu.

    One of the leaders of the protesters, Chief Chinedu Jideofo-Ogbuagu, said that the result as declared by the electoral umpire was unacceptable to them.

    Jideofo-Ogbuagu said that the outcome of the exercise was contrary to how the people of the area cast their ballots.

    He alleged that the victory of the APC in the election was ‘stolen’, adding that INEC ad hoc staff members collaborated with those who unleashed terror on the exercise.

    “Majority of those who came out voted for the APC, but they used thugs to chase away the people and changed the results,” Jideofo-Ogbuagu said.

    Also, the APC candidate in the election, Mr McDonald Ejiofor, said that he had believed the assurances from INEC that the election would be free and fair.

    Ejiofor alleged that their agents were chased out and not allowed to witness collation of results.

    He said that the election was marred by all manners of irregularities including multiple voting and massive thumb printing, adding that some APC supporters were injured.

    Ejiofor said that he was weighing other legal options in a bid to get justice.

    When contacted, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr Emeka Ononamadu, said that he was surprised that they were protesting.

    “Why are they protesting? Their agents were there when the results were released,” Ononamadu said

    BREAKING: Yellow fever outbreak spreads to three Enugu LGAs

    There was tension in Enugu State on Monday following the report of a suspected Yellow Fever outbreak in three more local government areas of the state.

    Enugu State had been fighting to curb the outbreak of the disease in two communities of Ette Uno and Umuopu in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state, which reportedly claimed 52 lives between late October when the outbreak was first reported and November 2020.

    The state government has also said it had received reports of strange deaths within communities in Nsukka, Isi-Uzo, and Igbo-Etiti LGAs.

    A statement by the Commissioner of Health, Prof Ikechukwu Obi, released on Sunday night, revealed that the ministry’s Rapid Response Team, LGA Rapid Response Teams in collaboration with International and National Partners had visited the communities to investigate the reports and had taken samples for testing.

    The statement partly read, “Following the confirmed cases of Yellow Fever in Igbo Eze North LGA of Enugu State and the concerted efforts to control the situation in the LGA by the State Government, Stakeholders and Partners; Federal and International, reports have also been received of ‘strange deaths’ within communities in Nsukka, Isi-Uzo and Igbo-Etiti LGAs.

    “The Enugu State Ministry of Health Rapid Response Team, LGA Rapid Response Teams, International and National Partners have also visited these LGAs to investigate the reports and take samples for testing just as was done for the reports at Igboeze North.

    “The new set of samples from these LGAs have been sent to the National Reference Laboratory at the Federal Capital Territory Abuja for a thorough and complete examination to determine conclusively the reasons for these new set of reports and the results are expected back early this week.”

    While the Health Commissioner emphatized with families that lost their loved ones in the sad development, he reminded residents of the state that “Yellow Fever is transmitted through mosquito bites”.

    He, therefore, counselled that people should keep their environment clean and remove mosquito breeding sites around their homes.

    He added, “Yellow Fever Vaccination is not for treatment of Yellow Fever, it is for prevention of Yellow Fever.

    “If you have been recently vaccinated against Yellow Fever, you do not need to be vaccinated again.

    “It takes 10 days or more for Yellow fever vaccine to start working after you have received it.

    “If you or your loved one are not feeling well, please visit or take your loved one to a nearby hospital for treatment. Trained Health Workers can recognize most of the diseases of public health importance and know what to do.”

    Enugu opens investigation into alleged strange deaths in communities

    The Enugu State Government on Thursday confirmed the strange deaths in Ette Uno and Umuopu communities in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of the state.

    It said that samples of patients had been collected and sent to the National Reference Laboratory to find out the cause of the strange deaths.

    Recall that there had been reports of a strange disease had killed no fewer than 40 persons in the two Enugu communities, which shares boundary with Kogi State.

    But the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ikechukwu Obi, in a statement, said the State Rapid Response Team of the ministry had visited the council area and met with its Rapid Response Team.

    Obi, however, disclosed that “on-the-spot check and outbreak investigation had revealed a number of deaths from an illness with symptoms suggestive of a disease of Public Health Importance”.

    He said that the Ministry of Health had informed the National Centre for Disease Control “and is collaborating with the Enugu State Ministry of Health at the local government to investigate and control”.

    Assuring the general public that the ministry was on top of the situation, Obi said that the ministry would continue to give them situation report on the matter.

    Mosques set ablaze as siblings stab Enugu tricycle rider

    There was palpable calm on Sunday at the university town of Nsukka in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State following the burning of two mosques and belongings owned by the Hausa community.Irate youths perpetrated the act.

    Chaos started on Saturday when some Hausa people stormed and stabbed a tricycle operator, who conveyed a Hausa woman, identified as Aisha, with her goods to the Army barracks.

    It was gathered that the woman refused to pay the rider the agreed transport fare of N750.

    Aisha, who sells fresh tomatoes and other perishable goods, instead of paying the tricycle rider N750, said the charge was much and offered to pay N500, a development that sparked exchange of words and subsequently attracted a crowd.

    TheNewsGuru learnt that while people were trying to find a common ground, Aisha placed a call to her brothers, who in turn came in their numbers.

    It was gathered that after giving the driver a beating of his life, one of them stabbed him on the chest.

    Ruffled by the attack on the tricycle driver, youths of the area mobilized and launched what seemed like a reprisal and allegedly destroyed two mosques and other valuables belonging to the Hausa community in the area.

    Two of the Hausa attackers, Hassan Yakubu and Nurudeen Mohammed, were reported to have been picked up by irate youths, who descended on them to settle the scores.

    Hassan, who spoke with newsmen, revealed that his sister Aisha contacted him on the phone, but before he arrived at the scene, one of his brothers, Nurudeen, had stabbed the tricycle operator.

    He said, “My sister Aisha contacted me on the phone that she had a problem with a tricycle rider and that I should come. However, before I arrived there, my brother, Nurudeen was already there.

    “In short, he and my other brothers had fought with the rider. Unfortunately, he (Nurudeen) stabbed him. So, when he fled, the youths picked on me.”

    An observer said that the mob blocked the entrance and exit points to the popular army barracks junction in Nsukka, burning tyres and destroying items belonging to Hausa people immediately it was alleged that the tricycle rider had died.

    It was gathered that the military from the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, later arrived at the scene with over three Hilux vans and Armoured Personnel Carrier and calmed the situation.

    In a new development, the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka has appealed for calm, saying that the stabbed keke operator, who was rumoured to have died, was still alive and responding to medical treatment at its hospital.

    The church, in a statement titled, ‘Nsukka is peaceful, don’t be incited to violence’, was signed by Diocesan Secretary/Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Cajetan Iyidobi. Fr. Iyidobi said that the Bishop, Most Rev, Godfrey Onah, had appealed to all sides involved in the chaos to remain calm but vigilant.

    Ugwuanyi reduces curfew hours in Enugu

    The Enugu State Government has announced an adjustment of the 24-hour curfew imposed in Enugu East, Enugu North and Enugu South Local Government Areas.

    Commissioner for Information, Mr Chidi Aroh said the adjustment followed the hardship occasioned by the 24-hour curfew imposed in Enugu metropolis in the face of the #ENDSARS protests.

    “The 24-hour curfew imposed in Enugu East, Enugu North and Enugu South Local Government Areas stands lifted with effect from 7am on Sunday, 25th October, 2020.

    “In its place, a 13-hour curfew from 6pm to 7am daily, is imposed in Enugu East, Enugu North and Enugu South Local Government Areas, with effect from 6pm on Sunday, 25th October, 2020 until further notice”.

    Aroh said that the Commissioner of Police in the state and other security agencies had been directed to ensure full compliance.

    The Commissioner however, said that persons involved in delivery of essential services such as Healthcare Workers, staff of Water Corporation, Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, Fire service, Enugu State Emergency Management Agency and others were exempted from the curfew.

    Hoodlums had hijacked the #EndSARS peaceful protests and destroyed some public and private property in the state.

    Some Federal and state government property and banks were destroyed by irate youths in the state between Wednesday and Saturday.
