  • Air Peace lauds FG over repair of Enugu Airport runway

    Nigerian carrier, Air Peace, has lauded the Federal Government over the palliative repair work on the runway of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, which began on Thursday.

    Mr Chris Iwarah, the Communications Manager, Air Peace, made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

    NAN reports that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had begun work on the runway with the first phase scheduled from Dec.14 to Dec. 21.

    FAAN said that the second phase would be from Dec. 27 to Jan. 4, 2018, while the runway would only be operational from 7.00 a.m to 3.00p.m on the proposed dates.

    Iwarah said that the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) had issued a Notice to Air Men (NOTAM) to the airline in this regard in line with the Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs).

    He said: “Air Peace is pro-safety and the safety of our passengers is paramount.

    “We are commending the Federal Government because that runway in particular has been a problem, because it has been destroying our tyres and causing other problems.

    “So, if the government has come out to say they want to fix it, it is something we must all commend.’’

    According to him, the airline will still be flying to the Enugu Airport during the period as its morning flights will not be affected by the partial closure of the runway.

    “Our morning flights will not be affected, but our 2.00 p.m flight may be affected, especially when there is some slight delays.

    “We don’t want to take chances and apart from the morning flights; other flights will go to either Owerri or Port Harcourt.

    “We have advised our passengers who have already booked flights to reschedule for free, no matter the fare differences,’’ Iwarah said.

  • FAAN commence reconstruction of Enugu Airport runway

    The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on Thursday began repair works on the runway of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

    Mrs Herrienta Yakubu, the General Manager in charge of Corporate Affairs, FAAN, stated this in a statement she issued in Lagos on Thursday.

    She said that the first phase of the repair works would run from Dec.14 to Dec. 21, 2017 while the second phase would be between Dec. 27, 2017 and Jan. 4, 2018.

    “There will be skeletal operations at the airport while the work is ongoing as the runway will open for operations from 0700 hours local time till 1500 hours local time on the proposed dates.

    “This is to enable the contractor has enough working hours during the day time in order to obtain stable and even runway surface, while also completing the work within the stipulated timeframe.

    “In line with Standards and Recommended Practices, FAAN has requested the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to issue a Notice To Air Men (NOTAM) in this regard,’’ she said.

    She said that FAAN apologised to intending travellers and the general public for any inconvenience the action might have on their plans.

  • Police in Enugu prevent mob action after trailer kills motorcyclist

    The Police in Enugu State have quelled a potential mob action and breach of the peace in Ugwuoba community in Oji River council area following the killing of motorcyclist in an accident involving a trailer.

    The spokesman of the Police command in the state, SP Ebere Amaraizu, said in a statement on Saturday in Enugu that the incident occurred on Friday in the Ugwuoba community located on the Oji-River-Enugu highway.

    Amaraizu said that a motorcyclist, who was later identified as Jonathan Madu, lost his life in an accident involving him and a trailer that was conveying cattle.

    “It was gathered that the trailer conveying cows skidded off its lane and crushed to death the motorcylist who was on the other lane.

    “Following the alleged incident, the driver of the said trailer was said to have taken to his heels.

    “But the early arrival of police operatives of the Oji-River Division aided in dowsing the brewing tension at the accident scene as both the motorcycle and parts of the trailer were already burning,’’ he said.

    According to him, some cows were recovered while the deformed body of the deceased has been taken to a nearby hospital morgue for autopsy.

  • CVR: INEC registers 125,198 new voters in Enugu

    No fewer than 125,198 eligible voters have registered for the first and second quarters in the Continuous Voters Registration in Enugu State.

    The state Independent National Electoral Commissioner, Mr Emeka Ononamadu, said on Saturday that 56,562 eligible persons registered in the second quarter of the CVR that ended on Sept. 19 in the state.

    He also said 68,672 registered in the first quarter, leading to a difference of 12,110 in between the two quarters.

    The commissioner said that the commission opened eight additional centres during the second quarter, especially in difficult terrains, to reach communities that were far from their local council headquarters.

    Ononamadu said the downward trend in the second quarter called for intensive awareness by Independent National Electoral Commission and other stakeholders to reverse it.

    He announced that the third quarter registration would begin on Oct. 30 and would run for three months.

    INEC cannot do it alone; we depend on critical stakeholders and the people to make elections very successful,’’ he said.

  • EEDC expresses anxiety over forged electricity bills

    The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has expressed apprehension over increasing report of some fake individuals forging its bills for account opening purpose.

     

    The Head, Communications of EEDC, Mr Emeka Ezeh, said this known in a statement on Tuesday in Enugu.

     

    He therefore called on banks and other financial institutions to consult it in the verification of electricity bills used in their transactions as proof of address.

     

    Ezeh said the call became necessary to stop a situation where marketers of the company were detained by the police on alleged fraud involving forged bills that bore their names and phone numbers.

     

    According to him, EEDC will not be liable if any criminal or fraudulent activity is perpetrated with any forged electricity bill not cleared with the company.

     

    “We just recorded three of such cases in Aba, there is every possibility that this is also happening unnoticed at other locations within our franchise area.

     

    “To check this growing negative trend, we appeal to banks to be cautious and ensure they carry out extensive check and verification of any EEDC electricity bill tendered for account opening purpose as proof of address,’’ he said.

     

    As part of initiatives geared toward ensuring customer satisfaction, EEDC has modified its electricity bill to wear a new look, from September.

     

    The additional features in the A5 sized electricity bill include a summary of previous balance; last payment made by the customer and a barcode which is a security feature.

     

    Other features are details of feeder and transformer serving the customer; name and phone number of the marketer in-charge as well as pictorial representation of customer’s meter reading.

    Flood: Osinbajo approves release of N1.6bn bailout to Lagos, Niger, Enugu, 12 other states

    Sequel to the devastating effects of the heavy downpour last week on most states in the country, the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has directed the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, to immediately release N1.6 billion for the 15 states ravaged by floods.

    The states include; Ekiti, Osun, Akwa Ibom, Kebbi, Niger, Kwara, Ebonyi, Enugu, Abia, Oyo, Lagos, Plateau, Sokoto, Edo and Bayelsa

    Spokesperson to President Muhammadu Buhari, Femi Adesina, made the disclosure to newsmen after the Federal Executive Council, FEC.

    Adesina said the money will help cushion the effects of the disaster on residents of the states.

    He explained said the fund “would be taken from the Federal Government’s Ecological Account in the Central Bank of Nigeria”.

    He said the Minister of Finance has been directed to release the money directly to the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, for onward distribution to the affected states.

  • Incessant road accidents: FG to establish truck transit parks in Kogi, Enugu, Lagos, others

    In a bid to stop the increasing rate of accident and loss of cargoes due to bad roads, the Federal Government has decided to establish Truck Transit Parks, TTP, across major cities in Nigeria.

    Amaechi explained that providing this critical infrastructure will enhance trade across the country.

    In his words: “The Federal Government plans over the next couple of years to develop Truck Transit Parks at Lokoja in Kogi State, Obollo-Afor in Enugu State, Ogere in Ogun State, Jebba in Kwara State and Port Novo Creek in Lagos State as an alternative strategy to address the menace of truck congestion at the seaports in Apapa and Port Harcourt.

    “These are meant to complement the Ore Sunshine in Ondo State and the ones being processed by the Kaduna State Government at the Mararaban – Jos, and Tapa on the Kaduna Abuja highway.

    “The Federal Government shall ensure that TTP projects independently developed by state governments and private investors meets a minimum standard in the number of facilities provided at TTP sites.

    “The Federal Government shall also ensure that the TTPs are economic and business hub creating wealth and employment for our teeming population particularly the youths”.

    Similarly, Minister Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola said that if the activities of these big vehicles are not well managed, they will become a big menace to the society.

    Fashola also disclosed the Federal government in a bid to curb the menace of the Heavy Duty Vehicles, HDVs, at the Apapa-Tin-Can area of Lagos embarked on the construction of a 340 HDV capacity Trailer Park opposite Tincan port.

    He said “The trailer park which is first of its kind in Nigeria, is expected to be completed within the 2017 fiscal year.

    “The park when completed is expected to decongest the area and improve economic activities.”

    Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has dismissed reports that the All Progressives Congress, APC, Enugu State Chapter shunned a purported presidential campaign parley called by Integrity Group, which is linked to him.

    A statement signed by Atiku’s Media Office stressed that, “the so-called Integrity Group is not known to Atiku Abubakar, the Atiku Media Office and the supposedly held parley by the group, is not known to the former Vice President.”

    The statement reads in part: “The news about this event is, at worst, the handiwork of some opportunists, political jobbers and shortsighted schemers who are out to do all they can to create power struggles for nothing but, their own selfish ends.

    “As such, the Atiku Media Office seeks to distance itself and the former Vice President from such group or persons.

    “The Atiku Media Office restates that what is of paramount importance to Atiku Abubakar (presently in Saudi Arabia to perform the lesser Hajj), at this critical stage of the life of our nation is party unity, unconditional support for the Acting President and prayers for the recovery and return of the President.

    “The former Vice President, is focused on lending his time and best endeavours to the President to ensure that the country turns the corner by overcoming the present ravaging recession and inflation and put food on the table for the average Nigerian citizen.     Police arrest 2 robbery suspects, cultist in Ebonyi

    The Ebonyi Police Command has arrested two suspected armed robbers and a cult kingpin in Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state.

    DSP Jude Madu, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) announced the arrest in a statement on Sunday in Abakaliki.

    According to Madu, the suspected armed robbers hail from Amike village in Ezzamgbo.

    “The notorious armed robbery suspects, who have been terrorising residents of the area, were arrested by officers from the Ohaukwu Police division.

    “The arrest was made possible through the collaboration of the youths and vigilante personnel of the village with the Police,” Madu stated.

    According to him, two locally made double-barrel pistols, army uniform with blood stains, two iron cutters, one saw blade and two machetes among others were recovered from the suspects.

    He said the police also arrested a suspected cultist, whose gang had allegedly been terrorising residents of the area.

    The PPRO stated that the suspect was arrested, allegedly with an axe while members of his gang fled on sighting the Police.

    “We are making efforts to arrest the fleeing members of the gang,” he stated.

    Police arrest alleged killer of deputy governor’s orderly in Enugu

    The Police in Enugu State say they have arrested a fleeing member of an armed group that allegedly killed the Enugu Deputy Governor’s orderly, Sgt. Helen Sunday.

    This is contained in a statement by the command’s spokesman, SP Ebere Amaraizu on Friday in Enugu.

    Amaraizu said the fleeing member of the group was arrested on May 27 in Lagos State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the orderly was killed in Enugu on May 9 by a group of armed men while on her way home from work.

    The police had on May 10 stormed the group’s hideout and engaged the suspects in a gun duel.

    Two people suspected to be members of the group were arrested while others escaped.

    The police said the deceased’s Infinix smart phone, amongst other items, was recovered from the hideout after the shootout.

    Amaraizu said the anti-kidnapping unit of the command arrested the suspect via a well-coordinated operation.

    He said police operatives trailed the suspect to a hideout at Apapa in Lagos State, where he was allegedly receiving treatment.

    “It is believed that the treatment was for bullet wounds sustained on May 10 when a shoot-out ensued between members of the armed group and police at Lomalinda and Amorji Nike areas of Enugu.

    “On that day, two of the gang members were fatally injured and apprehended while others believed to have been hit by bullets escaped,’’ he said.
