CAF explains why Moroccan Police stopped Rivers United from training ahead of CCL clash

The Confederation of Africa Football, through its Head of Securities, Dr Chris Emeruwa, has explained that due to certain handover protocols, the Moroccan policemen prevented Nigeria’s representatives, Rivers United, in the second round return leg of the CAF Champions League from taking part in a training session on Friday evening.

There has been public outrage over the perceived injustice meted to the Nigeria Professional Football League champions amd Emeruwa who was one of the contests for the Nigeria Football Federation Presidency in September said:

“The team booked a training site in Mohammed which is a city outside Casablanca. In Morocco, the police cannot provide escort services beyond their jurisdiction as such they needed time to contact the Gendarmerie so that they can hand over and allow the Gendarmerie to escort the team to their training site.

“Arranging such escort changeover requires some time and this was why the police asked the team to wait a bit as I type now the team is almost at the training site, ” Emeruwa noted.

The aggregate winner of the encounters will qualify for the group stage of the continent’s premier league.

The NPFL Champions however held 2-1 lead in the first leg,

NPFL: Wikki Tourists fans go on rampage after Enyimba draw

Fans of Wikki Tourists Football Club of Bauchi on Sunday went on rampage immediately after visiting Enyimba International FC of Aba drew goalless with the hosts.

The 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) matchday 19 fixture had left the fans dissatisfied.

The Wikki Tourists fans then constituted themselves into a nuisance at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Stadium by throwing stones and other dangerous objects into the pitch immediately the match ended.

The action meant both sets of players, referees and officials of the two teams were confined to the pitch as the situation worsened.

Security personnel then engaged the rampaging fans in a mild battle before releasing teargas canisters in order to drive them away from the stadium.

Afterwards, they evacuated the players and officials out of the pitch to the dressing rooms for safety.

Some of the Wikki Tourists fans interviewed later by NAN accused the referees of badly officiating the match.

One Aliyu Saleh alleged that the referee did not ensure that the normal 90 minutes of the game ran its full course.

“The Enyimba goalkeeper wasted over seven minutes by always lying down on the pitch, and that means the referee should have given extra minutes for the match, but he refused.

“So, bad officiating of matches is one of the problems facing Nigerian football league,”

Another fan, Shehu Abbass, said: “We don’t trust the referee’s officiating. He sold out the match in favourites of Enyimba.

However, another fan, Abubakar Danjuma, blamed the fans for reacting in such a manner.

“What is the benefit of throwing stones at players and officials of the match?

“With extra time or not, if the match is destined to end in a draw so shall it be. Besides, a match is a game of win or lose,” he said.

All efforts to get any official of both clubs were unsuccessful

Confederation Cup: Enyimba write CAF, seek rescheduling of Al Ittihad game

Enyimba have written to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over the first leg of their Confederation Cup tie with Al Ittihad and want the fixture moved.

CAF had earlier scheduled the game for this weekend but Enyimba said they got the information late.

“In the spirit of sportsmanship and for the integrity of the competition, the club has elected to accept the decision,” the club said in a statement on Friday.

“However, considering the brevity of time to the fixture, coupled with the current travelling challenges across the continent, it is absolutely impossible for us to arrange a trip to Libya within 48 hours.

“Consequently, we have written to CAF requesting a rescheduling of the date of the fixture to December 31 to enable us sort out our visas, flight bookings, hotel reservations, and other logistics.”

The club said they have also written to the Libyan team, based on CAF’s counsel, to inform them about their request and hope “to get their cooperation in reaching an agreement for the new date for the fixture.”

Friday’s statement from Enyimba has further added to the controversies that have greeted the team’s game with Al-Ittihad.

Two weeks ago, The Peoples Elephants had beaten their foes in the second leg of the match. The win in Aba was a sequel to the postponement of the first leg of the game following controversies over COVID-19 protocols. Enyimba were barred from entering Tunisia, Al-Ittihad’s adopted home ground.

  • We’ll consider all available options regarding Oladapo’s CAF ban – Enyimba FC

We’ll consider all available options regarding Oladapo’s CAF ban – Enyimba FC

Felix Anyansi-Agwu, the Chairman of Enyimba International Football Club of Aba, says the club will consider all options available to them regarding team captain Austine Oladapo’s ban.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Oladapo, a midfielder at the club, was handed a one-year ban by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Monday.

This was after he tested positive for a prohibited steroid, known as Prenisolone or Prednisolone.

The ban became necessary after Oladapo’s urine sample, taken after the club’s CAF Confederation Cup quarter-final first leg against Pyramids FC on May 16, tested positive for the banned substance.

But the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubside had stood behind their captain, saying Oladapo remained a disciplined athlete.

The club said Oladapo became worthy of the team’s captain band due to his professionalism and could not have intentionally taken the said drug.

A statement by the club chairman, posted on the club’s official website on Friday, said Enyimba FC would consider all available options.

But, Anyansi-Agwu said the club would in the meantime continue to stand with and defend their star midfielder and captain.

He also revealed that they had given CAF a heads-up before the said test that the player had been on preventive COVID-19 specific treatment.

“We received a letter from CAF informing us that Oladapo has been suspended for 12 months for failing a doping test.

“While we have been given the option to appeal the decision, it is pertinent to first clarify that as a club, we have a strict code of conduct that shows zero tolerance to hard drugs or any banned substance.

“That is why there had never been any record of a positive doping test on any of our players, either in domestic or international competitions.

“It is also important to state that the player in question is a true professional who strongly upholds and has always been abiding by the high standards of our club.

“It was for this reason, alongside his exceptional leadership abilities on and off the pitch, that he was chosen as captain of our team.”

The chairman insisted that he was convinced that “a player who over his four years with the club had shown such an exemplary level of moral and professional discipline could not have knowingly taken the said substance”.

He noted that the player has had a clean doping record, having been subjected to tests on previous occasions in CAF Competitions.

These were during their match against CARA Brazzaville in 2018 and at the 2018 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) in Morocco.

“On both occasions, the tests returned negative.

“As we already pointed out in our communication to CAF, Oladapo before the game against Pyramids had been on preventive COVID-19-specific treatment after being diagnosed with malaria with bronchitis.

“It was indicated in his medical report, which was also attached to our letter to CAF, that some of the treatment given in this regard are steroidal and can reveal prednisolone in his tribe sample test.

“Although we have not been made aware of the percentage of the substance concentration in his urine, we believe that any trace of it would have resulted from the prescribed medication.

“In following this matter, Enyimba FC will consider all available options, but will in the meantime continue to stand with and defend our star midfielder, who over the years has shown exceptional discipline and character worthy of our revered captain’s armband,” Anyansi-Agwu said.
