  • Worried! Parents of Abducted Lagos pupils make payment of N31m ransom

Parents of six abducted pupils of Lagos State Model College, Igbonla Epe have paid N31 million as ransom.

According to reports, some of the parents took the money to an undisclosed place and paid in two tranches.

The pupils have however not been released, 53 days after they were abducted from school.

A source told Punch that the parents paid the ransom, stating that the kidnappers promised to release them last Sunday.

A source said, “We don’t know what else these people want. The parents are stranded. The first time, three parents met with them somewhere and gave them N10m.

“They demanded another N21m ransom. The parents took the money to the place and gave it to some gang members. They told the parents that they had done all the necessary things and promised to release the children in the next two days. They have been expecting the children since last week.”

A parent of one of the children said the kidnappers confirmed that the ransom was complete but have failed to release the pupils.

“We gave them N31m cash. We didn’t send it through a third party and they confirmed the money was complete. They promised to release our children soon.

“We were confused when we heard that they demanded another N1.5m before the children could be released,” the parent added.

Recall that the kids were kidnapped three days after the gunmen notified the school management of their plans.

They had picked 10 students but later released 4, after screening them with family background.

The six pupils identified as Peter Jonah, Isiaq Rahmon, Adebayo George, Judah Agbausi, Pelumi Philips and Farouq Yusuf were whisked away in a speedboat.

  • Kidnappers of four Lagos pupils demand N1bn

Kidnappers of six pupils of Igbonla Model College, Epe, Lagos State, have contacted some parents of the victims, demanding N1bn ransom to release them.

According to Punch, the parents were contacted yesterday and allowed to briefly speak with their children. While two of them were asked to pay N400m each, another two were told to raise N100m per child.

They were reportedly told to meet with the school authorities and the state government to raise the money.

However, details of ransoms demanded from the remaining parents had yet to be ascertained by our correspondent as of the time of filing this report.

The gunmen had gained entry into the school premises at about 6am on Thursday through the creek at the back of the college and headed for the boys’ hostel after breaking the school fence.

They broke the hostel doors, seized 10 senior secondary school pupils and led them to the shore where their boat was parked.

After profiling their family backgrounds, four pupils were released, while the assailants whisked away the remaining six pupils identified as Peter Jonah, Isiaq Rahmon, Adebayo George, Judah Agbausi, Pelumi Philips and Farouq Yusuf.

It was reported that the gunmen had written the school authorities three days before the incident, informing them of the attack.

They made good their threat in the dawn after policemen and soldiers, who repelled an attack around 8pm on Wednesday, left the school.

In the wake of the abduction, parents and guardians thronged the college to pick their children and wards, blaming the incident on the poor security in the school.

Some parents of the abducted schoolchildren, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the kidnappers called between 3pm and 5pm on Saturday.

A parent said, “They allowed me to speak with my son. I asked him if he was fine and he said yes. They asked me to meet with the school authorities to raise N400m for my child to be released.”

Another parent of one of the pupils said they begged the kidnappers that they had only menial jobs when they demanded the same amount.

“I said N400m was much, but one of them told me not to worry myself. He said I should meet with the school authorities and the government. I was also allowed to speak with my child. I spoke with two other parents and they said they were asked to pay N100m each,” the parent said.

When contacted on the telephone, the school Vice Principal, Academic, who did not disclose his name, said, “I’m sorry. I cannot volunteer information for you. I’m not permitted to speak to you. Thank you.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Olarinde Famous-Cole, said the police had yet to be informed about the ransoms, adding that investigations were ongoing.

Meanwhile, a resident of Epe, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said security had also been beefed up around the college, following a clash between the security agents and the suspects.

He explained that the clash forced some residents of Ode village, a riverine community in Ogun State which shares border with Epe, to desert the area.

  • Again! kidnappers invade Epe, attack policemen

Again, armed kidnappers yesterday stormed Igbodu area of Epe, Lagos State unleashed terror on residents despite day after the Save Our Soul (SOS) protest led community leaders staged to the governor’s office against the continued abduction in the community.

A farm manager who spoke on condition of anonymity with our reporter claimed the kidnappers were more than 30, who stormed Elysian Farms yesterday.

He said: “We can’t ascertain the number of farm workers abducted for now. We cannot go into the farm presently; those of us, who were around when they came, had to escape. We are going to have a head count later to know the number of workers kidnapped. There were gunshots everywhere. The community is under attack.”

Also another resident who refused to disclose his identity said: “We heard they argued among themselves over money. The kidnappers withdrew money from an ATM gallery with the card of one of the victims. It was in the process of fighting that one of them was shot and killed. Apparently angry and mourning their slain colleague, five among them stormed Elysian Farm, hoping to abduct another set of victims.

“They, however, met policemen and immediately opened fire, riddling the police patrol van with bullets. The policemen scampered in different directions, leaving their vehicles. But the policemen later regrouped, called for reinforcement and returned fire for fire.”

It was gathered that the kidnappers were able to abduct five victims. For reasons yet unknown, the kidnappers left the victims in the custody of two of their colleagues in the bush.

When the victims realized that only two kidnappers were keeping watch on them, they attacked and allegedly killed one of the kidnappers. Those who escaped returned from the bush to narrate their ordeal.

Meanwhile the Baale of the community, Mr. Michael Shodipo, lamented that they have tried all possible means to dislodge the kidnappers, stressing that their efforts have not yielded positive results.

The state police boss, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, who confirmed the incident, said no police officer died in the shootout.

“The kidnappers came out but our men were able to repel them,” he said.
