EPL: Szoboszlai’s late strike sinks Arsenal as Liverpool top table

Liverpool defeated Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday, with Dominik Szoboszlai’s stunning free-kick ensuring the Reds maintained their perfect start to the season.

The Hungarian midfielder curled in an unstoppable strike from distance in the 83rd minute, sparking wild celebrations and leaving Arsenal’s resilient defence finally undone.

Arsenal’s afternoon worsened when William Saliba limped off early with injury, disrupting their backline. In spite of periods of possession, the Gunners lacked cutting edge in attack.

Liverpool, meanwhile, enjoyed strong support and pressed relentlessly. Arne Slot’s side now sit top of the Premier League table with three wins from three games.

Elsewhere, Manchester City suffered a surprise 2–1 defeat at Brighton, raising questions about their early form after dropping vital points in consecutive matches.

Manchester United edged Burnley 3–2 at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes converted a late penalty, ensuring United secured their first home league victory of the campaign.

Chelsea recorded a comfortable 2–0 win against Fulham, while Bournemouth stunned Tottenham with a narrow 1–0 success, denting Spurs’ hopes of maintaining momentum.

Everton claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Wolves, whereas Sunderland delighted home fans with a late 2–1 comeback win against Brentford.

West Ham impressed with a dominant 3-0 triumph away at Nottingham Forest, signalling intent after an inconsistent opening fortnight.

After three rounds, Liverpool lead the standings on maximum points, with Arsenal, Chelsea and West Ham among the early chasers. City remain unusually unsettled.

  • EPL: Fulham fury as Chelsea clinch controversial derby win

EPL: Fulham fury as Chelsea clinch controversial derby win

Chelsea continued their unbeaten start to the Premier League (PL) season with a 2-0 victory over Fulham at Stamford Bridge, a result that means they have now lost just one of their past 12 league games.

It has been another busy week in the transfer window for Chelsea, with Christopher Nkunku joining AC Milan and Nicolas Jackson closing in on a loan move to Bayern Munich. Meanwhile, an imminent new arrival, Alejandro Garnacho, was in the stands to watch his future employers struggle against a well-drilled Fulham outfit during the first 45 minutes. There were early half-chances for João Pedro and Liam Delap, but the latter’s hamstring injury around the quarter-hour mark threw the hosts off-kilter, with the Cottagers subsequently causing plenty of problems.

In fact, they thought they had taken the lead midway through the half when 18-year-old Josh King finished off a counter-attack for what would have been his first PL goal. However, much to the chagrin of Marco Silva, who was apoplectic in his protests, the goal was ruled out as Rodrigo Muniz was judged to have fouled Trevoh Chalobah in the build-up.

As the first half progressed, Chelsea did improve slightly, and only an instinctive Bernd Leno save denied Tyrique George, yet from the resulting corner, Pedro headed Enzo Fernández’s ball home to give the Blues a perhaps undeserved HT lead.

Not long after the restart, VAR was again Silva’s nemesis as Chelsea doubled their lead. Chalobah’s cross hit the raised arm of Ryan Sessegnon and, after a trip to the pitchside monitor, referee Rob Jones pointed to the spot. From 12 yards, Fernández made no mistake to give Enzo Maresca’s men breathing space.

That second strike knocked the stuffing out of Fulham and, had Pedro not been caught in two minds when one-on-one with Leno, the home team’s margin of victory may well have been greater.

Ultimately, the Blues had to make do with just the two goals, but that is enough to temporarily take them to the top of the table. On the other hand, Fulham, and particularly Silva, will feel aggrieved with the manner in which they were defeated by their local rivals. It means they are still waiting for their first win of the season, although this is also their opening loss in all competitions.

Liverpool’s Ngumoha headlines dramatic EPL matchweek

Liverpool’s stunning 3–2 victory at Newcastle provided the standout drama of the English Premier League Matchweek Two, as 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha struck a sensational stoppage-time winner.

The teenager became Liverpool’s youngest goalscorer, finishing superbly after Newcastle had fought back from two goals down in spite of Anthony Gordon’s red card.

Bruno Guimarães and Will Osula had briefly restored parity for Newcastle.

At the Emirates, Arsenal overwhelmed Leeds with a commanding 5–0 win. Viktor Gyökeres scored twice, but injuries to Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødegaard overshadowed celebrations.

Manchester City suffered a shock 2–0 home defeat to Tottenham. Richarlison led the line impressively, with Spurs exploiting City’s defensive gaps to secure a famous victory.

Chelsea produced a ruthless display, thrashing West Ham 5–1 away. The defeat intensified pressure on Hammers manager Graham Potter after another disorganised defensive performance.

Everton delighted their home fans with a 2–0 triumph against Brighton at Goodison Park, collecting their first points of the season in convincing style.

Manchester United endured further frustration at Fulham. Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty, and Emile Smith Rowe’s late strike earned the hosts a valuable 1–1 draw.

Elsewhere, Burnley eased past newly promoted Sunderland 2–0 at Turf Moor. Bournemouth edged Wolves 1–0, while Brentford beat Aston Villa by the same scoreline.

Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest shared the points in a 1–1 draw at Selhurst Park, where off-field protests by supporters overshadowed events on the pitch.

Matchweek Two delivered surprises and statement performances, with Tottenham’s resilience, Arsenal’s firepower, and Ngumoha’s heroics ensuring a weekend rich in storylines across the Premier League.

Club World Cup winners draw FA Community Shield winners in EPL opener

Club World Cup champions Chelsea were held to a goalless draw at Stamford Bridge by FA Community Shield holders Crystal Palace in their English Premier League (EPL) season opener on Sunday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) recalls Chelsea clinched the Club World Cup in July with a victory over Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), while Crystal Palace stunned defending EPL champions Liverpool to lift the FA Community Shield earlier this August.

Both sides struggled to convert their chances in the cagey encounter. Palace midfielder Eberechi Eze, however, found the net, but his effort was ruled out, following a VAR review, leaving the game deadlocked.

Elsewhere at Old Trafford, Arsenal defeated Manchester United by a lone goal in their EPL season opener, and Nottingham Forest defeated Brentford 3:1 at home.

  • Liverpool edge Bournemouth in 6-goal EPL opener

Liverpool edge Bournemouth in 6-goal EPL opener

Liverpool opened their Premier League title defence with a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth in an emotional night at Anfield on Friday.

The match began with a poignant tribute to late forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, with fans observing a heartfelt 20th-minute applause.

New signing Hugo Ekitike marked his debut in style, firing home in the 37th minute after a swift attacking move involving Dominik Szoboszlai.

Shortly after the restart, Cody Gakpo doubled Liverpool’s advantage, finishing neatly from Ekitike’s precise pass to make it 2-0.

Bournemouth refused to fold, and Antoine Semenyo reduced the deficit in the 64th minute with a cool finish from a counterattack.

Twelve minutes later, Semenyo struck again, weaving through Liverpool’s defence before driving a powerful shot past Alisson to level the match.

Liverpool responded late, with substitute Federico Chiesa volleying in from close range in the 88th minute to restore their lead.

In stoppage time, Mohamed Salah sealed the win with a fierce strike, extending his record as the Premier League’s top scorer on opening days.

The evening was briefly marred by an incident in which Semenyo reported racial abuse from the stands, prompting officials to pause the match.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot praised his team’s resilience, highlighting Ekitike’s impact and the collective spirit in honouring Jota’s memory.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola commended Semenyo’s performance but admitted defensive lapses proved costly in the closing stages.

The win ensures Liverpool start their campaign with momentum, combining attacking flair with emotional resolve in a fixture that will be long remembered for its intensity and sentiment.

  • Super Eagles forward reveals intention to play in EPL

Super Eagles forward reveals intention to play in EPL

Super Eagles and Genk of Belgium striker, Tolu Arokodare has revealed his intention to play in the English Premier League (EPL).

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Arokodare disclosed in an interview on Friday that it has always been his dream to play in the EPL.

Arokodare, who spoke with NAN in London, said he was exploring other options which included playing for other bigger clubs especially in the EPL.

He said that his desire to play for other bigger leagues does not mean that the Belgian league was not good enough.

“I am trying to go higher and I think that it is what the club and the coaches will want for me. In life, you just want to take that step forward and it is my time to take that step.

“I will go to any club I think is best for me but it is always a dream to play in the English Premier League,” Arokodare said.

The 24-year-old striker, who scored 21 times and assisted five times in 40 appearances in the just concluded 2024/2025 season, said it was a dream come through to have been invited to the Super Eagles.

“There are lots of football players in Nigeria now that would love to have this opportunity that I have. I feel very honoured to put on this jersey and represent the country in doing what I love to do.

“Every time I get out there, whether I am playing or not, I will always support the team,” Arokodare said.

The gangling striker might be favoured ahead of Cyril Dessers who opted out from Thursday’s training in the final of the 2025 Unity Cup against Jamaica on Saturday.

  • Relegated Southampton shut out lifeless Man City

Relegated Southampton shut out lifeless Man City

Relegated Southampton shut out lifeless Manchester City to move past the Premier League record low mark of 11 points with a goalless draw at St Mary’s.

This season’s Saints are now up to 12 points to ensure Derby County’s record low from the 2007-08 season remains intact for at least another year.

City could have moved level on points with second-placed Arsenal with a win but served up a dismal attacking display a week before their FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.

They stay in third place but the dropped points on the south coast could prove costly in a tight race for a top-five finish and a place in the Champions League next season.

Erling Haaland returned from injury but offered little as Pep Guardiola’s side were content to play at walking pace against an admittedly packed Southampton defence, and looked devoid of ideas for most of the game.

Defender Manuel Akanji headed wide from a corner and Bernardo Silva saw a shot hacked off the line by Saints captain Jack Stephens.

Saints goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was only called into serious action inside the last few minutes, clawing away a header from Ruben Dias before Omar Marmoush rattled the crossbar from long range.

But there were cheers from the stoic home crowd at the whistle as the hosts held on for just a third clean sheet all season.

  • Liverpool seal record-equalling 20th EPL title

Liverpool seal record-equalling 20th EPL title

Liverpool have won their 20th top-flight English league title, following their 5-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday.

Arne Slot’s Reds are now on 82 points, putting them out of reach for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, with four games left.

Liverpool have now matched Manchester United’s total number of top-flight English titles of 20.

It’s Slot’s first trophy since taking over as manager from Jurgen Klopp, who helped the team win their first Premier League title following a 30-year dry spell.

Liverpool raced to a six-point lead (with a game-in-hand) over Arsenal before the turn of the New Year.

Both sides stumbled at times over the last few months, but it’s the Reds who have come out on top in the end.

Manchester City were the only other realistic title challengers, but Pep Guardiola’s men dropped off after a 2-0 defeat at Anfield on Christmas Eve.

It has been a wonderful few weeks for Liverpool after club captain Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah recently penned new contracts to remain at Anfield.

Salah is enjoying a historic season in the Premier League, with 28 goals and 18 assists to his name. He is the overwhelming favourite to be named Player of the Season, and is one of the main contenders to win the Ballon d’Or.

Liverpool’s latest Premier League title is their second in six years, taking the Reds to a record-extending total of 70 major honours.
