EPL title chase: Guardiola reacts as Man City pile up pressure on Arsenal

Manchester City took another step in their bid to win a fourth consecutive Premier League title with a 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Josko Gvardiol and Erling Haaland were on target for the defending champions.

Pep Guardiola’s men kept the pressure on leaders Arsenal, pulling to within a point of the Gunners – who held on to win 3-2 at Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the day – in the table with a game in hand.

“I think the most important thing is to not think (about the title race), especially these moments, but take it day by day.

“Honestly if you overthink, you’re going to be crazy in your head, so relax now, enjoy, focus on the next one,” Haaland told reporters.

Forest had matched City in a nervous first half at the sun-drenched City Ground before Gvardiol got the holders on the scoreboard with his second career league goal.

This was when he headed in Kevin De Bruyne’s corner kick from the near post in the 32nd minute.

Forest had only 10 men on the pitch at the time following an injury to Neco Williams.

“I didn’t expect to score, but I found myself in a good position. We need to be focused on ourselves, and that’s what we’re doing. Four more finals until the end — let’s do it,” Gvardiol said.

Haaland made a quick impact when he entered the game as a substitute in his first action since missing two matches with a muscle injury.

The Norwegian took a pass from De Bruyne in the 71st minute, took three touches, then launched it into the far corner for a league-leading 21st goal of the season.

He had previously been level with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.

“It was more than hard, such a difficult game but we knew that. The game we played in Brighton (a 4-0 win on Thursday) feels like a few hours ago so it is always difficult,” Guardiola said.

He said his side did not feel added pressure from kicking off after Arsenal’s win.

“The pressure is how you play. If you play good and control the game then people say you don’t feel the pressure, if you play bad people say you feel the pressure,” the Spaniard said.

Forest, who are a point above the drop zone in 17th, looked little like a team facing potential relegation and had travelling City fans – including musician Noel Gallagher – breathing sighs of relief several times.

The home side had 14 shots to City’s 11, including an absolute sitter that a wide open Chris Wood missed when he got his feet tangled up in front of the net.

Forest have won just two of their last 15 league games, going back to Dec. 30, a poor record that has been overshadowed by their troubles off the pitch.

They were docked four points last month for breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules. They have appealed the decision.

They also hit out at refereeing standards in the Premier League in an angry statement posted on social media platform X following their loss to Everton last Sunday – which has led to the FA launching an investigation into the club.

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo, however, was pleased with the fight his squad showed.

“We played a good game, we were organised, compact, we had chances. We did a good job, regarding the opponent, how hard it is for them to play City.

“With the attitude, and the way we played, we’re going to achieve what we want (avoiding relegation), this is more important,” Santo said.

City’s Stefan Ortega replaced injured keeper Ederson at halftime, with the Brazilian leaving the stadium with his arm in a sling.

The visitors were also missing Phil Foden, who scored five goals in his previous two league appearances, to illness.

City’s final four games are against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United.

EPL: Arteta speaks on Arsenal’s title chances after victory over Tottenham

Arsenal must not get carried away with their Premier League title chances after edging local rivals Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in a hard-fought London derby, manager Mikel Arteta said on Sunday.

The Gunners raced into a three-goal lead by halftime but Spurs battled back with two goals and left the visitors holding on for the points after a storming late comeback.

“Don’t get carried away with yourself. Just understand we have to be better, we want to be better. There’s a margin for improvement and we go again against Bournemouth,” said Arteta.

League leaders Arsenal host the Cherries on Saturday before finishing with games at Manchester United and home to Everton in a thrilling title race as they try to hold off Manchester City.

“We are right on it. The motivation and what is ahead is beautiful,” he told reporters after a nervous finish away to Tottenham, who could have snatched a draw at the end.

Arsenal have bounced back after losing 2-0 at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League and then 1-0 at Bayern Munich as they exited the Champions League in the quarter-finals.

They beat Wolverhampton Wanderers away, thrashed Chelsea at The Emirates and have now taken three points at neighbours Spurs, which Arteta acknowledged was always difficult.

However, he said his team was ready for the challenge and raring to go as they chase their first league title in 20 years.

“They’ve played a lot of minutes, a lot of games. It’s an emotionally demanding month but yesterday I had to stop them in training because they wanted more. That’s a good sign.

“This team has a lot of courage and determination to make it happen. I have (faith in the players).

“In the last few minutes I was doubting a little to be fair,” he said with a smile.

Upon resumption of the second half, Raya gave Spurs hope by sending a clearance straight to Romero.

An unlikely comeback seemed on when Son scored from the spot but Arteta’s side were able to close out the game, denting their arch-rivals’ hopes of a top-four finish.

EPL: Onana denies team maximum points as Burnley force United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana was the villain for United as he cost his side victory against visiting Burnley football club.

Onana committed a foul right in the box  thereafter,  Zeki Amdouni converted a late penalty to grab a priceless point for relegation-threatened Burnley in the Premier League at Old Trafford.

First half ended gpalless but Anthony scored a for the host in the second half with just under 12 minutes to go, which felt likely to be the matchwinner. However, Andre Onana conceded a late penalty with a clumsy foul and Burnley scored to share the points.

But, just as he did on the opening day against Wolves, Onana recklessly charged from his line in an attempt to punch the ball clear but hit an opposition player instead.

The result meant Burnley moved to within two points of fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest, whom they play at Turf Moor on the final day of the season.

“We’ve earned the right to believe and hope,” Burnley manager Vincent Kompany told Match of the Day.

Kompany said “the task is to do something special” against Newcastle next Saturday, before Burnley travel to Tottenham the following week.

“We have an opportunity on that one day against Forest,” he said.

Although they grabbed a point off Manchester United the visitors would have to hope that Nottingham Forest and Luton Town fail so they can escape relegation.

Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes have been left in tatters after a 2-2 draw at West Ham, with the Reds now winning just one of their last five league matches.

After their 2-0 defeat to Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday, the Reds needed a win if they were to realistically keep themselves in the race with Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the table.

But a sluggish first half saw them fall behind as Jarrod Bowen (43) nodded home for West Ham from a quick corner. However, Liverpool were level three minutes after the break when Andy Robertson (48) turned home.

It was a far better performance from Liverpool in the second half and they deservedly went ahead as Cody Gakpo’s bounces   off Alphonse Areola in the 65th (65).

But another unmarked header from Michail Antonio (77) saw West Ham equalize to leave Liverpool two points behind Arsenal and one behind Man City, with the two still to play this weekend. The Hammers move a point behind seventh-placed Newcastle, with the Magpies having played two games more.

EPL: Our 4-0 win over Brighton not an assurance we’ll win the title – Guardiola

Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, has dismissed insinuations that their 4-0 demolition of Brighton on Thursday night is an assurance they will win the English Premier League title this season.

City defeated Brighton 4-0 at the American Express Stadium on Thursday night with Foden grabbing a brace, while De Bruyne and Alvarez scored a goal each.

While speaking to Sky Sports, Guardiola said: “We have been here in the past but it doesn’t mean it is going to happen [win the title].

“We have to do the things to make it happen. We know Brighton never give up and in the first half we found the right rhythm and we scored in the right moments.

“In the right moments, we punished them. Brighton away is always very tough.”
