EPL: Manchester United handed strategy to beat Liverpool

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a former Manchester United player and manager has called on head coach Erik ten Hag to make maximum use of the pace of Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Hojlund in their upcoming clash against Liverpool.

According to the Norwegian, Liverpool’s midfield can be pulled out of position, leaving United’s pacey attackers to exploit the space and launch a devastating counter-attack.

Solskjaer also acknowledged the high-intensity style of play Liverpool is known for, but he also pointed out their vulnerability when the ball is lost due to the absence of Roberto Firmino, the club’s former false nine.

With Bruno Fernandes expected to have more time on the ball, Solskjaer is confident that United can repeat their previous success against their rivals by playing a counter-attacking style of football.

“With Jurgen, you know what is coming but it is so hard to play against,” Solskjaer told The Athletic.

“But now, with no Firmino, the front three can be out of the game when the ball is lost because there’s no false nine.

“Then Liverpool’s midfield get pulled out of possession, and that’s where you can utilise the pace of Rashford, Garnacho or Hojlund. [Bruno] Fernandes will have more time on the ball and Liverpool’s defence must drop back.

  • EPL: Nottingham Forest move from drop zone

EPL: Nottingham Forest move from drop zone

Three first-half goals on Tuesday earned Nottingham Forest a vital 3-1 victory over Fulham in their battle to stay away from the Premier League relegation zone.

The hosts were irrepressible in the first period with Callum Hudson-Odoi opening the scoring after nine minutes and Chris Wood doubling Forest’s advantage in the 19th minute.

Stunned Fulham manager Marco Silva made a triple substitution but it got worse for the visitors before the interval as the outstanding Morgan Gibbs-White made it 3-0 in stoppage time with a clinical finish.

Fulham reacted well in the second half and threw themselves a lifeline when Tosin Adarabioyo headed in from a corner.

Both sides hit the woodwork but, despite a few jitters, Forest held firm to move to 25 points, three ahead of Luton Town who occupy the last relegation place.

Forest were left deep in trouble when they were docked four points last month for breaching Premier League financial rules.

But they have responded impressively to that setback with a draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday, followed by Tuesday’s win over Fulham courtesy of a barnstorming first half.

Nuno Espirito-Santo’s side, fired-up by a vociferous City Ground crowd, took the lead inside 10 minutes as Gibbs-White’s ball released Hudson-Odoi who cut back inside to dispatch a shot past Fulham keeper Bernd Leno.

Hudson-Odoi wasted another chance shortly afterwards but Forest extended their lead when Wood caught Leno off guard with a shot from the edge of the area.

Anthony Elanga should have made it 3-0 and with Fulham being overwhelmed.

Manager Marco Silva hauled off Alex Iwobi, Sasa Lukic and Harry Wilson with Adama Traore, Tom Cairney and Willian coming on to replace them.

Forest were relentless going forward though and Gibbs-White rounded off a sensational half with a shot into the far corner to send the Forest fans into raptures.

Adarabioyo’s header soon after the restart caused some concern in the home ranks but Forest were soon firing again with Neco Williams having a shot deflected against the crossbar.

Fulham were much improved though and had Kenny Tete’s header gone in instead of glancing off the crossbar it would have ensured a nerve-jangling finale.

  • EPL: Jesus blamed for being inconsistent

EPL: Jesus blamed for being inconsistent

Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus has been singled out for criticisms by former coach Arsene Wenger.

According to Wenger, the Brazilian international needs to become more consistent before he can be considered a top player.

Recall that Jesus completed a move from Manchester City to Arsenal in 2022.

The 26-year-old was keen to fill the void left by the departure of strikers Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette that summer.

So far, the striker has  only managed just 11 league goals in all competitions across his debut campaign for the Gunners. This season, Jesus has netted just four times in the Premier League and has also missed some matches due to injury.

While having a chat with former player, Freddie Ljungberg for Viaplay Sports Wenger heaped so much blame on Jesus saying he hasn’t lived up to expectations.

His words “They have no Thierry Henry at the moment because I think Gabriel Jesus is injured a lot.

“There are more goals in him than what you see at the moment. What the top, top player doesn’t tolerate is [being] in and out.

“The guys who make history are the guys who are consistently there. Ronaldo and Messi, they play for 15 years, 50 to 60 games per year.”
