EPL: Liverpool, City to clash in table topping encounter at Anfield today (Match stats)

Liverpool on Saturday dropped to second position on the log for the first time since November following Arsenal’s victory over Brentford last night at the Emirate.

The Reds are looking to reclaim their top spot in today’s Super Sunday clash against Manchester City at Anfied.

Earlier this season when both  teams met, it ended  1-1 at the  Etihad Stadium. Erling Haaland opened the scoring and Trent Alexander-Arnold equalised for Liverpool on 80 minutes.

In previous Premier League meetings between the sides at Anfield, the Reds have won 17 and lost only two, with seven games drawn.

Jürgen Klopp’s men are undefeated in their last 29 home matches in all competitions, scoring 87 goals in that time.

In all competitions, Liverpool have scored in 52 of their last 53 fixtures.

They go into this fixture having won eight of their last nine league matches. In that sequence they are averaging three goals per game.

It’s belived that City defensive midfielder, Rodri hasn’t lost a game in which he starts for the Citizens, the number rose to 60 last matchday.

Klopp has faced Pep Guardiola more times in his managerial career (29) than he has against any other manager.

Klopp has won eight and lost seven of his 21 encounters with Guardiola as Liverpool boss in all competitions.

Guardiola’s side have won nine consecutive away games in all competitions, scoring 25 goals while conceding 10.

They have scored in each of their last 20 matches in all competitions, since a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa in early December.

Liverpool (22) and City (21) are the top two sides for points gained from losing positions in the Premier League so far this season.

Both teams are in top shape going into this encounter but Liverpool have little advantage of playing at Anfield.

Any team that wins this game will definitely go top of the EPL table. A draw will make status -quo remain at least for next one week.

The match will kickstart by 16;45 GMT at Anfield.

  • EPL: Martinelli captured on crutches after Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Brentford

EPL: Martinelli captured on crutches after Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over Brentford

Arsenal winger, Gabriel Martinelli, left the Emirate stadium on crutches after Arsenal’s victory over Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday night.

Martinelli could miss the UEFA Champions League second leg tie against FC Porto on Tuesday.

Martinelli was on the scoresheet as the Gunners thrashed Sheffield United 6-0 on Monday.

However, he got injured during the hour mark, following a heavy challenge.

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta, revealed after the game that the 22-year-old had merely sustained a heavy cut.

But the injury was serious enough for it to rule Martinelli out of the London derby against the Bees.

That victory was tempered slightly, however, by the news that Martinelli was seen by Football.London walking through the mixed zone after the match with the aid of crutches.

EPL: Rashford, Bruno score as Manchester United defeat Everton 2-0 at Old Trafford

Manchester United kept their top four spot hopes alive after defeating Everton Football club  by 2-0 at Old Trafford, courtesy of two first half penalties.

Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford converted from the spot to extend Everton’s winless run in the Premier League to 11 games.

Victory takes United to within eight points of fourth-placed Aston Villa and three of Tottenham in fifth.

Defeat leaves Everton still just five points above the relegation zone, having played two more games than 18th-placed Luton.

Back-to-back defeats to Fulham and Manchester City had dented a charge from Erik ten Hag’s men towards the top four.

  • EPL: Carragher names three players worthy to win PFA award

EPL: Carragher names three players worthy to win PFA award

Liverpool and former England international, Jamie Carragher, has listed Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Manchester City’s Phil Foden, and Arsenal’s Declan Rice as his three contenders for this season’s PFA Player of the Year award.

Only one Premier League star will be handed the prestigious Player of the Year award at the end of the 2023/24 season.

It would be recalled that Man City’s Erling Haaland won the award last season after a remarkable debut season at Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, Carragher has not named Haaland among the favorites to win the award this season.

In a tweet via his X account on Friday, the former defender feels Van Dijk, Foden, or Rice will win the coveted title depending on whichever one’s club wins the Premier League this term.

“Phil Foden, Declan Rice and Virgil Van Dijk have been the best players for the three title contenders,” Carragher wrote.

“Whoever takes their team to the title, will probably take himself to the PFA POTY award!”

  • EPL: Arsenal thrash Sheffield United 6-0

EPL: Arsenal thrash Sheffield United 6-0

Arsenal cruised to a seventh successive Premier League win as they put six past a dreadful Sheffield United side at Bramall Lane.

The Gunners were 3-0 up inside 13 minutes and led 5-0 at half-time against the league’s bottom side.

Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, Declan Rice and Ben White scored – with an own goal from Jayden Bogle – for Mikel Arteta’s team.

The win ensures Arsenal move two points behind leaders Liverpool.

It keeps the Gunners in the thick of the title race, while in contrast Sheffield United are 11 points from safety with just 11 games remaining.

Arsenal scored after five minutes, with the only surprise being that it took them so long. They carved United open down the left, before the ball was cut back for Odegaard – unmarked 10 yards out – to slot home.

The lead was doubled in the 13th minute – Bukayo Saka’s low cross was deflected into his own net by Bogle, who got his legs in a tangle with the ball deflecting off his ankle – and was quickly extended when Martinelli fired in via a deflection after Jakob Kiwior’s cut back.

As fans once again streamed out of Bramall Lane during the first half, Havertz made it 4-0 by tucking into the bottom corner following a Martinelli through ball.

Arsenal cut through United at will, and another slick move of short passes on 39 minutes ended in Rice finishing low past the beleaguered home keeper Ivo Grbic.

The visitors did not ease up after the break, as another well-worked move ended in right-back White firing powerfully past Grbic with his left foot.

The Gunners have become the first English league side to win three consecutive away games by a margin of five or more goals, while United – seemingly doomed to relegation – are the first English league side to lose four consecutive home games in all competitions while conceding five or more goals.

  • EPL: Foden, Halaand score as City thrash United 3-1 at Etihad

EPL: Foden, Halaand score as City thrash United 3-1 at Etihad

After scoring first in a much anticipated encounter at the Etihad, Foden scored a brace, Halaand scored another to secure a comeback victory  for Manchester City against Man United.

The 192nd Manchester derby took place today between a Manchester City team fighting to replicate their Treble heroics and a Manchester United side still hoping to get into the top four.

Marcus Rashford scored a sublime goal as early as the 8th minute but City came back stronger and netted three times in the second half  to continue  the chase and mount the pressure on  leaders Liverpool.

City are now one point behind leaders Liverpool.

The results means that City would retain its second position on the log while Arsenal would maintain its third position should they defeat Sheffield on Monday night.

Manchester United are still currently occupying  the 6th position on the log.

There are still eleven games to be played before the 2023/24 seasons ends in May.

  • EPL: Fabregas predicts Sheffield United vs Arsenal clash

EPL: Fabregas predicts Sheffield United vs Arsenal clash

Former Arsenal captain, Cesc Fabregas has posited that Arsenal will defeat Sheffield United on Monday night.

Arsenal are billed to slug it out with relegation battling Sheffied United at Bramall Lane.

The Gunners are in fine form and have won all their Premier League fixtures in 2024.

And Fabregas believes the run will continue, as Mikel Arteta’s men will prove to be too strong for the blades.

He said: “I see Arsenal at the moment as too strong. I see them confident.

“I know they lost against Porto, but I think in the Premier League nowadays they are two levels up and I believe that they know exactly what they’re doing.

“I’m sure they believe, and they’re pushing from the staff point of view to win this game more than anything because these games win titles.

“There’s a bit of everything but, at the moment, I see Arsenal a little bit too strong to be dropping points there.”

  • EPL: City, United go for broke in Manchester derby

EPL: City, United go for broke in Manchester derby

Manchester City are presently occupying the second position in the Premier League standings and have been inconsistent so far this season.

The home side thrashed Luton Town by a 6-2 scoreline in the FA Cup this week and will be confident ahead of this fixture.

Meanwhile their match day 27 opponent, Manchester United are on  sixth place in the league table at the moment and have improved in recent weeks.

The Red Devils edged Nottingham Forest to a narrow 1-0 victory in their previous game and will look to achieve a similar result this weekend.

Manchester City have stuttered regularly throughout their Premier League campaign but seem to have found their feet in recent weeks. Erling Haaland scored five goals against Luton Town this week and will look to replicate his heroics on Sunday.

Manchester United have shown marked improvement over the past month but have a poor recent record at the Etihad Stadium. Manchester City are the better team on paper and should be able to win this game.

Sunday’s match will be played at the Etihad by 3;30pm local time.

  • Nunez scores 99th-minute winner for Liverpool

Nunez scores 99th-minute winner for Liverpool

Darwin Nunez came off the bench to score a dramatic 99th-minute winner and send Liverpool four points clear at the top of the Premier League with victory at struggling Nottingham Forest.

As the game drifted past the eight added minutes announced by the fourth official, Nunez, playing his first game since suffering a muscle injury at Brentford on 17 February, found the bottom corner with a glancing header from Alexis Mac Allister’s cross.

It was Liverpool’s first league win at the City Ground since 1984 and ensures that they will be top of the table heading into next Sunday’s crucial match against champions Manchester City.

With the game goalless heading into the final seconds, and title rivals City and Arsenal still to play this weekend, Jurgen Klopp’s side faced the prospect of falling to third by Monday night before Nunez’s last-gasp intervention.

Defeat for Forest leaves them just four points above Luton Town in the final relegation place having played two games more and with the outcome of their financial breach case still to be decided.

Forest had the best chance of a forgettable first half when former Liverpool forward Divock Origi’s through ball sent Anthony Elanga clean through but the attacker was denied by the outstretched left leg of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Luis Diaz came closest for the visitors in the first 45 minutes as the ball ricocheted into his path but the Colombian’s stabbed effort was deflected over the bar.

Liverpool came close again soon after the break when the ball fell kindly for Andy Robertson in the box. However, his shot was kept out by the boot of home goalkeeper Matz Sels.

It was Forest who threatened next as Elanga’s first-time shot fizzed wide at the end of a flowing move and, while the away side pushed for a winner at the other end, clear chances were not forthcoming.

Sels did have to make a crucial save in stoppage time when Nunez’s header ricocheted goalwards off Murillo before Virgil van Dijk made a vital intervention to deny Morgan Gibbs-White from a Forest counter-attack.

Liverpool kept going though and were rewarded deep into stoppage time as Nunez expertly found the net.
