EPL: Nunez, Jota Score as Liverpool beat Burnley 2-0 to go top, Manchester United in comeback win against Aston Villa

Pending Arsenal’s match against West Ham at the Emirate on Thursday night,  Liverpool will top the Premier League table following a 2-0 win over Burnley on Boxing Day

Jurgen Klopp’s men travelled to Turf Moor in second place, looking to put pressure on Arsenal and came out victorious with  clean sheet.

Two goals from the Reds in either half was all the need away team needed to climb the summit of the log.

Darwin Nunez ended his goal drought to put the Reds in front.

The Uruguayan striker had gone over 600 minutes without scoring, but curled in a fantastic effort from the edge of the box early on.

Harvey Elliott’s effort was ruled out because Mohamed Salah was standing in an offside position, before Diogo Jota sealed the win.

Liverpool now have 42 points, two more than Arsenal who welcome West Ham on Thursday.

Elsewhere, United came from two goals down to defeat Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, with Alejandro Garnacho scoring twice before Rasmus Hojlund got his first Premier League goal.

Finally! After 15 Premier League appearances, 19 shots and 1026 minutes, Man Utd  £72million man broke his duck.

Rasmus Hojlund couldn’t have met the deflection off Aston Villa captain John McGinn much sweeter as he fired an unflinching left-footed volley in off Emi Martinez’s right-hand post and into the back of the net, in front of Old Trafford’s Stretford End. The relief on the Dane’s face was clear for all to see as he celebrated, the delight of his team-mates likewise.

EPL: Wasteful Chelsea suffer 2-1 defeat to Wolves at the Molineux

Chelsea on Sunday evening suffered a  2-1 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux.

The Blues were hugely wasteful in front of goal and were made to pay for their lack of clinical finishing as the host scored two goals in the second  half of the encounter to snatch victory against the Blues.

It was a positive first-half for the visitors at Molineux but somehow the game was goalless at the break. Raheem Sterling missed a golden opportunity where he could have played it to one of his teammates for an easier chance.

Mario Lemina then put the hosts a goal ahead early in the second-half and that was enough for the three points. Matt Doherty scored Wolves’ second in stoppage time to make sure of the win for the home side.

Christopher Nkunku then scored in stoppage time to give Chelsea some hope but it wasn’t enough. Below, Bobby Vincent rates each of the Chelsea players that featured at Molineux.

EPL: Why we couldn’t beat Liverpool – Mikel Arteta

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has given detailed reports why his team “didn’t find the right quality moment in the final third” against Liverpool on Saturday.

Liverpool and Arsenal settled for a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening at Anfield.

Gabriel Magalhaes’ early header was cancelled out by a fine Mohamed Salah finish.

Both sides had chances to score again, but eventually settled for a share of the points.

Arteta, speaking to Sky Sports, said: “A big test and we absolutely came through it. The boys were incredible. One of the most intense, hectic games I have witnessed in 20 years in this league which says a lot.

“It was an unbelievable game of football with two teams that raised the bar to another level, both sides wanted to win and played as such. In the last 15-20 minutes our team really wanted to win but we didn’t find the right quality moment in the final third to achieve it.”

  • EPL: Bowen, Kudus score as West Ham beat Manchester United 2-0 at the London stadium

EPL: Bowen, Kudus score as West Ham beat Manchester United 2-0 at the London stadium

West Ham United on Saturday afternoon defeated Manchester United 2-0 at the London Stadium to climb to sixth on the log.

The Hammers broke the deadlock after the first half of the encounter ended 0-0 as all efforts to score a goal proved abortive.

However, West Ham’s Bowen broke the deadlock  in the 72nd minute by tucking past Onana at the second attempt after a superb pass from Paqueta.

Six minute after, Ghanaian attacker, Kudus rounded off two defenders to fire home from the edge of the area to condemn United to another Premier League defeat.

Manchester United’s effort to at least score a goal didn’t yield any result.

The final result meant West Ham United will finish above Manchester United on the Premier League log for the Christmas season.

EPL: Arsenal are difficult to play – Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp has said Premier League rivals Arsenal have become stronger and difficult to play against.

Liverpool host the Gunners on Saturday.

Klopp said: “I thought they looked like that last year, to be honest, then some results kicked in or whatever, I don’t know exactly the reasons.

“I remember our game here, they were outstanding until we found a way into the game – and then maybe in the end we should have won it. Maybe they had other chances as well, I can’t remember them, to be honest, but I can remember Ibou Konate at 2-2 with the chest half a yard in front of the goal… I am still wondering how he couldn’t score there. That was the team we faced, a super-strong team.

“That’s what they are – and you bring in Rice and Havertz and that doesn’t make you worse. Raya in goal doesn’t make you worse. Mikel built exactly the team he wanted and they are difficult to play. They are a good mix between physicality, like big, strong players, fast, good technique, very good organisation, they are really well-coached, well-drilled. You can see every year they make another step.

“They really have my respect but we want the points anyway.”

EPL: Mikel Arteta reveals formula Arsenal will adopt to silence Anfield crowd

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed the formula his side will adopt to silence the shouting crowd at Anfield when both sides clash today in an English Premier League game.

According to the gaffer, Arsenal will go to Anfield and try to dominate proceedings in the top of the table  encounter.

The Gunners are away to Liverpool, looking to win for the first time since September 2012.

Last season, Arteta’s men were 2-0 up in April before the Reds fought back to earn a point.

Ahead of this weekend’s clash, Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has issued a rallying cry to supporters, urging them to “give your ticket to someone else” if they are not prepared to create a hostile atmosphere.

But Arteta is plotting how to silence the home supporters.

“You have to play better than them. You will silence the crowd if you are dominant and better than them. It’s going to be a great atmosphere. The two teams are in a really good moment, really good position, really strong position. They are going to be well-placed to win it and to go for it. It’s going to be an intense match,” Arteta said.

EPL: Liverpool lose top spot to Arsenal, draw goalless with Manchester United at Anfield

Liverpool Football  club on Sunday evening played an entertaining 0-0 draw against Manchester United  at Anfield.

All efforts by the home side to score a goal proved abortive in the game as  Manchester United Cameroonian goalie, Andre Onana made crucial saves to ensure United leave Anfield with a point.

Liverpool’s offensive play gave them 12 corner kicks but united defense stood solid all through the encounter.

United had few chances in the game with one falling to Granacho but the defensive abilities of Trent Alexander Arnold came into play as he marked out the Argentine before disposesing him of the ball.

Dalot was sent off for throwing a hand towards the referee, complaining over a decision to award a throw-in to Liverpool, and he picks up his second yellow!

The draw sees Jurgen Klopp’s side drop to second, while United move into seventh place on the English  Premier League table.
