Tottenham chairman to make Conte second highest paid in EPL

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is willing to make Antonio Conte the second highest paid manager in the country.

Conte is in talks with the North Londoners, having left Inter Milan at the end of the season.

The Mirror reports Conte could be offered an incredible salary of up to £15m-a-year – in addition to funds being made available to spend on the squad.

Levy, 59, is also reportedly bullish over his chances of keeping Harry Kane at Tottenham.

And Conte is eager to work with the England skipper.

Should the Italian take the job, only Pep Guardiola would earn more than him in the Premier League.

The former Barcelona boss rakes in around £20m per season at Manchester City.

While Conte’s new salary would tie him with Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Why Fulham got relegated from EPL – Lemina

Mario Lemina stated Fulham got relegated to the Championship because they ‘weren’t good enough’ to stay in the Premier League.

In the just-concluded season, Scott Parker’s men finished in 18th position having amassed 28 points from 38 outings.

While stating his teammates gave their best to avoid the drop, the 27-year-old claimed that the Londoners were not good enough to maintain their top-flight status.

“I don’t think that this Liverpool game changed something in our attitude or anything,” Lemina told the club website.

“We just tried to play our game like we always play.

“After Liverpool it just didn’t work like we wanted. Sometimes that’s life and we have to accept it.

“The only thing I can say is that the whole team didn’t give up, we never gave up, and that’s what we have to remember.

“Honestly, I still feel pain, because we had a great team to stay in the Premier League, but it didn’t go as we wanted.

“We’ve been so unlucky, but at the same time, I’m not going to lie, we weren’t good enough to stay in the Premier League this year. But I think in the next seasons, Fulham is going to get better and better.”

Liverpool break through into Top 4, overtake Leicester

Liverpool’s late-season charge continued on Wednesday as they moved into the English Premier League’s top four, after beating Burnley 3-0.

The Reds claimed a fourth successive win to further boost their hopes of sealing UEFA Champions League qualification.

Roberto Firmino and Nathaniel Phillips got goals either side of halt-time at Turf Moor to set them on the road to victory.

Jurgen Klopp’s side needed a last-gasp winner from goalkeeper Alisson to beat West Brom on Sunday.

But there was no need for any late drama this time, with substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain firing in a late third.

The hard-fought result sees them leapfrog Leicester City on goal difference.

It then means victory on the final day at Anfield on Sunday against Crystal Palace will see them in Europe’s premier club competition next season.

Liverpool had been wasteful in a first half that appeared set to end scoreless until Firmino popped up in the 43rd minute, providing the finishing touch to Andy Robertson’s cut-back cross.

The Brazilian was one of those to miss a clear opportunity as the visitors too often failed to trouble full debutant Will Norris in the Burnley goal.

Mikel Arteta makes clear Willian plans at Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expects Willian to stay at the club beyond this summer.

The Brazilian has been linked with a move to Inter Miami, with reports claiming he is unhappy with the Gunners.

Arteta concedes the 31-year-old did not perform at his best this season, but believes he will stay at the club.

He told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Crystal Palace: “First of all we signed a player with an incredible talent, a proven talent and performance level in this league, and this season has been difficult and I take full responsibility because I have to be the one getting the best out of him and we had moments but not to the level that he did before.

“This is an assessment that we will do individually with the players and with Edu, the board and the ownership to make the right decisions for the future.

Asked whether he’ll remain at Arsenal, Arteta concluded: “Every player that is under contract is very likely to be here with us next season.”

Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho admits there was a heavy disappointment after defeat to Chelsea.

Iheanacho struck for the Foxes in the 2-1 defeat.

He lamented afterwards, “It’s so painful. We needed to win this match. The first half was not so good, but in the second half we were much better. It was just hard for us to come back.

    “We gave everything tonight.

“It was hard for us and now we have to win the last match and try to secure a place in the Champions League.”

Torres hat-trick settles thriller for EPL champions

Ferran Torres scored a remarkable hat-trick as Manchester City celebrated being English Premier League (EPL) champions with a thrilling 4-3 win over Newcastle.

The visitors dominated the early stages, although without creating meaningful changes, and it was the Magpies who took the lead with 25 minutes gone.

Jonjo Shelvey delivered the set-piece to the far post, where defender Emil Krafth rose to head firmly past the helpless Scott Carson, who was making his debut for City aged 35.

Shelvey hit the crossbar before a quickfire double from City put the champions back in control.

First, Joao Cancelo’s shot clipped Jacob Murphy’s heels and flew past the wrong-footed Martin Dubravka before Torres audaciously flicked Ilkay Gundogan’s free-kick across him and inside the far post.

City were pegged back in first-half injury time when Nathan Ake fouled Joelinton inside the area, and the striker brushed himself off to equalise.

Newcastle had another penalty shortly after half-time, this time Kyle Walker the guilty defender on Joe Willock, and Willock saw his effort saved before smashing home the rebound.

But, another quickfire double from City settled the game as Torres got his second and third goals inside two minutes.

Torres hits hat-trick in thrilling Man City win

Manchester City twice came from behind to win a Premier League classic against Newcastle in their first game since being confirmed as Premier League champions.

Ferran Torres registered a hat-trick for City and his superb backheeled finish was the highlight of a remarkable game that swung back and forth.

Pep Guardiola, who surprisingly selected Scott Carson in goal – almost a decade on from his last English top-flight game – saw his City side dominate early on but fall behind to Emil Krafth’s powerful header from Jonjo Shelvey’s corner.

Joao Cancelo equalised with a deflected effort into the bottom right corner and when Torres expertly turned home Ilkay Gundogan’s free-kick 185 seconds later it looked as though the visitors could cut loose.

But Steve Bruce, who had called upon his Newcastle side to go toe-to-toe with the champions will have been delighted by the character his players displayed.

While they were forced to soak up considerable pressure, they levelled when City defender Nathan Ake was deemed to have fouled Joelinton, allowing the Brazilian to score from the penalty spot.

A poorly judged tackle by City full-back Kyle Walker handed the Magpies a second penalty just after the hour mark, with Joe Willock following-up to score after Carson had saved his initial spot-kick.

However, Torres and City struck back, with the Spaniard finding the top right corner from Gabriel Jesus’ delivery and becoming the youngest player to score a league hat-trick for a Guardiola team, when turning in a Cancelo shot that came back off the Newcastle post.

It rounded off a captivating encounter and brought up another milestone for Guardiola’s side, who set a new league record with their 12th consecutive victory away from home.

  • EPL: Man Utd comeback win keeps City waiting on title

EPL: Man Utd comeback win keeps City waiting on title

Manchester United virtually guaranteed a Premier League top-four finish and ensured rivals Manchester City must wait to be crowned champions as they came from behind to beat Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Having sealed their place in the Europa League final despite a 3-2 second-leg defeat by Roma on Thursday, second-half goals from Bruno Fernandes, Mason Greenwood and substitute Edinson Cavani ensured Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side require a single point from their remaining four games to secure a Champions League place.

A win for Villa would have sealed the title for leaders City – beaten 2-1 by Chelsea on Saturday – and Bertrand Traore’s emphatic finish into the top corner midway through the first half threatened to do just that.

Emiliano Martinez was equal to attempts from Greenwood and Marcus Rashford as United struggled to respond initially, while Dean Henderson kept out Ollie Watkins’ strike to deny Villa a second before half-time.

United levelled shortly after the restart when Fernandes calmly slotted in a penalty after Douglas Luiz needlessly fouled Paul Pogba, and Greenwood completed a four-minute turnaround when his low strike found the bottom corner.

A VAR check for handball against Greenwood was dismissed after Luiz headed the ball onto the arm of the United forward and the visitors successfully resisted late Villa pressure despite the loss of captain Harry Maguire to injury before Cavani confirmed victory in the closing stages.

In a frantic finale, Villa forward Watkins also received a red card for a second booking for simulation when under pressure from goalkeeper Henderson.

United are 10 points behind champions-elect City but will have the chance to move within four points as they face Leicester and Liverpool before the leaders next play.

  • EPL: Liverpool keep top-4 aspirations alive

EPL: Liverpool keep top-4 aspirations alive

Liverpool did keep their faint top-four hopes alive on Saturday, but the unconvincing manner of their victory does not bode well for their 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League aspirations.

Jurgen Klopp’s side stumbled over the line for only a second league win at Anfield in 2021 in beating Southampton 2-0.

It was all thanks to Sadio Mane’s first-half header and Thiago Alcantara’s first goal for the club in the 90th minute.

At this stage of the campaign results rather than performances are the preference.

Considering Liverpool’s woeful home record this year, this was a welcome boost after conceding late equaliser in their previous two matches.

Chelsea’s added-time winner at Manchester City had put Thomas Tuchel’s side into third just before kick-off.

It had then set Leicester City as Liverpool’s new primary target —- who were nine points ahead.

More injuries —- to Ozan Kabak, Ben Davies, James Milner and Naby Keita —- meant academy graduate Rhys Williams was drafted in for his first start in two months alongside Nat Phillips.

He was returning at centre-back after a two-match absence.

It also meant Klopp was without his three first-choice central defenders plus the two he signed in January as cover.

His lack of resources showed with Ben Woodburn, who spent the first half of the season on loan at Blackpool, in the squad for the first time in two years.

He was alongside 18-year-old centre-back Billy Koumetio, who was making his debut on a Premier League bench.

The game quickly settled into a familiar pattern at Anfield of chances created but not converted.

Fraser Forster, returning in goal, twice saved from Salah and once from Diogo Jota while Jannik Vestergaard blocked Thiago’s follow-up.

Georginio Wijnaldum’s header hit the crossbar while Phillips, the hosts’ only real aerial threat, headed wide from a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner-kick.

But from a similar far-post position, Mane made no mistake from Salah’s 31st-minute cross —- the first time this season the pair had combined for a Premier League goal.

It was the conclusion of a pivotal passage of play.

This is because 46 seconds earlier, Alisson Becker had blocked Che Adams’ shot and caught Nathan Redmond’s rebound as Saints began to build some threat.

Klopp was less happy after the goal than before it.

Southampton pushed back with Kyle Walker-Peters sending a cross-shot wide and Nathan Tella directing a six-yard header straight at Alisson.

Normal service was restored after the break.

Jota forced Forster into a near-post save and Phillips got his header all wrong on the edge of the six-yard box but it faded much quicker than the first-half start.

Liverpool resorted to keep-ball, without really threatening, in order to nullify the visitors.

But it still required Alisson to dive at the feet of Michael Obafemi and push over fellow substitute Ibrahima Diallo’s drive.

But even the goalkeeper was not infallible and was lucky to escape when a mishit clearance straight to Adams was returned back to him when the Saints forward should really have scored.

Jota’s weak shot wide was his last action before being replaced by Roberto Firmino, while Mane’s volley past Forster was ruled out for offside as the match entered a nervy final 10 minutes.

Thiago slotting into the Kop goal from outside the edge of the penalty area just as the clocked ticked past 90 minutes ended the hosts’ anxiety.

But on this evidence there will be more to come.

And the worrying is far from over for Saints, who are not mathematically safe and a 13th defeat in 17 matches leaves them still looking over their shoulders.
