EPL: Leicester come from behind to beat Burnley

Leicester got the win they craved over Burnley to mark the anniversary of former owner’s Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha’s death on an emotional day at the King Power Stadium.

Burnley thought they had equalised through Chris Wood eight minutes from time but his effort was controversially ruled out by the video assistant referee, which ruled the striker had accidentally tripped Jonny Evans before the ball entered the net.

It meant Leicester were able to celebrate victory after goals from Jamie Vardy and Youri Tielemans had overturned Wood’s 26th-minute header.

It was a fitting result on a day when Leicester honoured Vichai, who was killed on 27 October last year when his helicopter crashed shortly after take-off close to a car park by the stadium.

Earlier, thousands of fans took part in a ‘Walk for Vichai’ and the stadium itself turned white as they wore scarves bearing the logo ‘Making the Impossible Possible’ which were given to them after entering the stadium.

Vichai’s son ‘Top’, who is now responsible for running the club, was dignified throughout the game, shaking hands with numerous well-wishers before kick-off. He did allow himself to punch the air when Tielemans’ 74th-minute shot powered into the roof of the net.

As the players left the field, Top put his hands together in prayer and pointed to the sky.

EPL: Chelsea beat Newcastle to move third

Marcos Alonso’s second-half strike broke Newcastle’s resistance as Chelsea moved up to third in the Premier League with their fifth successive win in all competitions.

The Blues seemed set for another frustrating day at Stamford Bridge after Tammy Abraham saw his header hit the bar and Martin Dubravka denied Christian Pulisic.

But they finally got their reward for relentless second-half pressure when Spanish left-back Alonso drove in a firm, angled shot in the 73rd minute.

They should have scored a second through Abraham, but the England international’s shot was brilliantly blocked by DeAndre Yedlin.

Steve Bruce’s Magpies were preoccupied with defending for much of the match and failed to test Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Defeat means they drop into the relegation zone, although their manager will point to the fact they have now played every one of the ‘big six’ in their first nine games, bar Manchester City.

EPL: Man Utd will reinforce squad in January – Solskjaer

Manchester United will try to sign one or two players in the January transfer window to improve their chances of finishing in the top four, but will not spend big on transfer fees and wages, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has said.

United are 12th in the Premier League ahead of Sunday’s home game against league leaders Liverpool after a poor start to the season that has been further disrupted by injuries to key players.

Solskjaer sanctioned the departures of forwards Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez in the close season without reinforcing United’s attack and the Norwegian also has goalkeeper David De Gea and midfielder Paul Pogba out injured.

“We’re looking at one or two new signings. We’re one or two players light.

“If the right ones are available in January then we might do something. If not, these players will give everything (for a top four finish).

“I’m not going to go down the route of bringing players in on big contracts and fees if they’re not the right ones for the whole group and for the future.

“The money is there to strengthen in January and in the summer,” Solskjaer said.

United started the season with a 4-0 win over Chelsea but have scored five goals in seven league matches since and Solskjaer said an injury to forward Anthony Martial, who has not played since August, was a factor in their struggles.

“There are many reasons, but one of them is injuries to Anthony. Creating chances has been a challenge for us with teams dropping deep.

“But we’re practising patterns every single week. When we get the players fit.

“I’m going to make Marcus and Anthony score those scruffy goals, as that’s what I did,” the 46-year-old former United player said.

EPL: Arsenal’s Aubameyang named Player of the Month

Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been named the Premier League’s Player of the Month for September after scoring five goals in four matches.

The Gabonese topped an eight-man shortlist after a vote by the public, as well as by the 20 club captains and a panel of football experts.

Aubameyang’s goals during September were worth five points to Arsenal – he scored twice in their 2-2 draw at Watford, the equalisers in draws with Tottenham and Manchester United and the late winner with a free-kick against Aston Villa.

  • EPL: Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris to miss rest of 2019

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is set to miss the rest of 2019 with a dislocated elbow but does not need surgery, the club said.

Lloris, injured during Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Brighton, is not expected to train again until next year.

He fell awkwardly as he failed to hold a third-minute Pascal Gross cross, with Neal Maupay nodding in the loose ball.

“Although surgery will not be required, our club captain has suffered ligament damage,” Spurs said in a statement.

“He is not expected to return to training before the end of 2019.

“Hugo is currently in a brace and will now undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation.”

EPL: Aubameyang earn Gunners point at Old Trafford

A vital VAR intervention for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s strike gave Arsenal a 1-1 draw at Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday Night Football.

In a disappointing encounter that was a pale shadow of their mighty clashes of years gone by, Scott McTominay gave Manchester United the lead at the end of an attritional first-half with a rising drive from the edge of the area.

Arsenal equalised just before the hour courtesy of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s cool finish. It was originally ruled out for offside but the video assistant referee confirmed the striker had been played onside by Harry Maguire.

Goalkeeper Bernd Leno excelled for Arsenal with fine saves from Maguire and Marcus Rashford’s late free-kick, while Bukayo Saka’s goalbound shot crucially struck Victor Lindelof and flew over the top.

McTominay also headed a great chance well over from Ashley Young’s corner but neither side could force a winner.

The result takes Arsenal into the top four but Manchester United are now down in 10th after an outcome that means they have made their worst start after seven games in 30 years, failing to reach double figures for the first time since 1989-90, a season in which they finished 13th.

EPL: Chelsea beat Brighton to get first home league win

Second-half goals from Jorginho with a penalty and Willian’s deflected shot earned Frank Lampard’s Chelsea a 2-0 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

Victory for Chelsea meant it was their first home Premier League win of the season.

Jorginho slotted the penalty into the bottom corner after Brighton defender Adam Webster had miscontrolled the ball and brought down Mason Mount as the young Chelsea midfielder rushed in to take advantage.

Willian hit home after a cross-filed ball from substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi in the 76th minute. Goalkeeper Mat Ryan, who had held Chelsea at bay for most of the game, was wrong-footed by a deflection off Dan Burn.

Chelsea had 17 attempts on goal in the first half alone but were unable to turn their pressure and high tempo possession into goals.

Mount hit the post from a free kick and Ryan made two fine close-in saves from Ross Barkley and Pedro. Willian, Marcos Alonso and Tammy Abraham also fired wide from good positions.

Brighton were forced to attack after the penalty but failed to make their few chances count.

Steven Alzate had a shot deflected wide and Burn headed down a corner that bounced high and hit the crossbar in the 73rd minute.

Liverpool maintain perfect start with narrow victory over Sheff Utd

Georginio Wijnaldum scored the only goal as Liverpool continued their perfect start to the Premier League season with victory at a raucous Bramall Lane.

But the winner was a moment to forget for otherwise faultless Blades goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who spilled the Dutchman’s tame effort before it squirmed agonisingly over the line.

It meant relief for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who were far from their best in South Yorkshire – and left thankful that the hosts could not find a way through in a game where they matched the European champions in many respects.

Substitute Leon Clarke, making his Premier League debut at the age of 34, should have levelled it late on, but blazed over.

Liverpool have won their first seven league games of the season, and before Saturday’s 15:00 BST matches, they have an eight-point lead at the top of the early season table.

Klopp’s Reds were rightly expected to win this game – and ultimately did. But when the story of the 2019-20 season is told, this may be looked back on as one of Liverpool’s most crucial but most fortunate victories.

The first half, though goalless, was thrilling. For all of the visitors’ early pressure, it was Chris Wilder’s side who had the first sight of goal when Ollie McBurnie stung the palms of Adrian.

Liverpool’s first clear chance came as a result of a long ball over the top from Virgil van Dijk, but Sadio Mane’s finish when through on goal was wild and wayward, while the Senegal forward later struck the post.

After the break, United may have hit the front, but for alert defending from Joel Matip and Andrew Robertson to frustrate the enthusiastic John Lundstram.

At the other end, when a penalty appeal for Lundstram’s challenge on Mane was denied, it seemed that Liverpool may have to settle for a point.

With time running out, the Merseysiders withdrew Jordan Henderson for Divock Origi, and the move to a 4-2-3-1 formation ultimately paid off with Wijnaldum’s fortunate finish.

  • EPL: Chelsea face double injury blow

Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard, has confirmed that defenders, Emerson Palmieri and Andreas Christensen will be out of action until next month.

Emerson sustained a thigh injury in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday in the Premier League.

The Italian left-back was joined on the treatment table by Christensen after the Danish centre-back suffered a knee problem against the UEFA Champions League winners.

“Emerson now won’t be back until the other side of the international break (during mid-October),” Lampard told a news conference ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third round clash against Grimsby Town at Stamford Bridge.

“It will be a few weeks because it is the reoccurrence of an injury so we have to be a bit careful with it.

“Andreas is not too severe. Hopefully, he won’t be out for too long but I can’t give a timeframe.”

This means Palmieri and Christensen will both miss Chelsea’s clash against Grimsby in the Carabao Cup and Brighton in the Premier League this weekend.

Liverpool maintain perfect start against Chelsea

Leaders Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the English Premier League (EPL) season as first half goals from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino secured a 2-1 win at Chelsea on Sunday.

The win left Liverpool five points clear at the summit.

It was a sixth straight league win from the start of the campaign for Juergen Klopp’s European champions and extended their club record streak to 15 in total.

Chelsea put up a spirited fightback in the second half, and pulled a goal back with a superb effort from N’Golo Kante.

But a second defeat of the season has left them 10 points adrift in 11th.

Liverpool took the lead in the 14th minute when Alexander-Arnold rifled the ball into the top corner.

This was after Mohamed Salah backheeled a free-kick into his path on the edge of the penalty box.

Chelsea had been a clear second best in the early stages, but were denied an equaliser by VAR after 26 minutes.

This was after Cesar Azpilicueta bundled the ball in only for replays to show that Mason Mount had strayed a fraction offside in the build-up.

Liverpool made the most of the reprieve as four minutes later Andy Robertson’s cross from the left was headed powerfully into the net by the unmarked Roberto Firmino.

Kante pulled one back in spectacular fashion, turning midfielder Fabinho, before attacking the heart of the visitors’ defence and curling the ball into the far corner.

Mount and substitute Michy Batshuayi missed late chances to equalise.

Liverpool began the match at a frenetic pace as the intensity of their pressing game kept Chelsea pegged firmly against the ropes, struggling to keep possession or build any momentum.

It was not long until the pressure told.

Salah backheeled a free-kick to Alexander-Arnold, who let fly with his right foot, drilling the ball past goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

In spite of being second best for much of the first half, Chelsea still had their moments.

Azpilicueta bundled the ball home after 26 minutes, but the home crowd’s raucous celebrations were swiftly curtailed when replays showed Mount was inches past the last defender.

Salt was then rubbed into the wound when Liverpool doubled their lead four minutes later.

Alexander-Arnold tapped a free-kick on the left to Andy Robertson, whose cross was met by Firmino and he powered his header home from close range.

Liverpool should have added to their advantage early in the second half when Firmino was left unmarked at the far post.

However, he scuffed his volley and the Brazilian’s effort was parried away by Arrizabalaga before Chelsea began to find their feet.

After Kante pulled a goal back with his solo effort, they looked the more likely to score again, but chances came and went.

Batshuayi headed wide after 88 minutes and Mount scooped a Marcos Alonso cross over the bar at the death to leave the home side rueing their missed opportunities.
