EPL: Sheffield United secure surprise win at Everton

Yerry Mina’s first half own goal and a late Lys Mousset effort gave Sheffield United a smash-and-grab 2-0 win at Everton in an entertaining English Premier League match on Saturday.

The result lifted the Blades to eighth place on eight points from six games while Everton slipped to 14th on seven points after they failed to convert several chances at Goodison Park.

Colombia defender Mina put the ball past his own goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 40th minute after the first purposeful move by the visitors resulted in a corner kick.

Everton dominated the opening half and their Brazilian forward Richarlison curled a fine shot inches wide before visiting goalkeeper Dean Henderson kept out a stinging low drive by Lucas Digne.

Everton pressed after the break in search of an equaliser but were caught cold again in the 79th minute.

This was after Mousset latched on to a defence-splitting pass and beat Pickford with a clinical finish to delight the away fans.

Sheffield United held out comfortably in the last 10 minutes as Everton manager deployed Theo Walcott in a desperate attempt to salvage something from a disappointing performance.

EPL: Wood scores twice as Burnley bring Norwich City down

Chris Wood scored a superb first half brace to help Burnley outclass Norwich City 2-0 at Turf Moor on Saturday and return to winning ways in the English Premier League.

The result snapped Burnley’s winless run of four games since they beat Southampton 3-0 on the opening day of the 2019/2020 EPL campaign.

It also gave Daniel Farke’s Norwich a reality check following their 3-2 upset of defending champions Manchester City last weekend.

Forward Wood put Burnley ahead in the 10th minute with his first league goal since April, guiding his header past Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul at point-blank range.

Ashley Westwood had whipped in a perfect ball from the corner.

Norwich paid the price for giving away possession cheaply as New Zealander Wood doubled Burnley’s lead four minutes later.

He met midfielder Dwight McNeil’s drilled pass from the left with a crisp left-footed shot that gave Krul no chance.

Midfielder Moritz Leitner, who came on in the opening half for the injured Alexander Tettey, had Norwich’s best chance of the game in the 23rd minute.

However, his fierce shot from distance only rattled the post with Nick Pope beaten.

Sean Dyche’s Burnley, who have collected eight points from six matches, next travel to Aston Villa while Norwich visit Crystal Palace.

EPL: Leicester City come from behind to beat Spurs

James Maddison’s first league goal of the season helped Leicester come from behind to beat Tottenham in an absorbing encounter at the King Power Stadium.

Maddison drilled a superb low effort into the far corner from distance to lift Brendan Rodgers’ side back into the top four at the visitors’ expense.

Ricardo Pereira had put the Foxes back on level terms, moments after Spurs had been denied a second goal when Serge Aurier’s low drive was disallowed for a marginal offside call against Son Heung-min.

Harry Kane’s fourth league goal of the season had given Spurs the lead in the first half, the England striker slotting Son’s clever flick beyond Kasper Schmeichel despite being knocked off balance by Foxes defender Caglar Soyuncu.

Leicester thought they had opened the scoring themselves when Wilfred Ndidi scored on the rebound after Paulo Gazzaniga spilled Youri Tielemans’ effort, but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR.

EPL: Bournemouth win at Southampton for first time

Bournemouth survived a second-half fightback to secure a first ever victory at Southampton and move into third place in the Premier League before the weekend’s games.

Eddie Howe’s side produced a superb first-half display to establish a two-goal lead as Nathan Ake headed in Diego Rico’s corner in the 10th minute and Harry Wilson’s sweeping finish from Phillip Billing’s pass crowned a superb move.

The Cherries also had a goal from Joshua King ruled out for offside by the video assistant referee as they were in complete control for the first 45 minutes.

Southampton snatched at a lifeline when James Ward-Prowse scored from the spot eight minutes after the break following Steve Cook’s clumsy challenge on Che Adams.

Bournemouth felt they had a credible penalty claim ignored by VAR when Cedric Soares tangled with King but they came through in relative comfort and wrapped up the win with virtually the last kick of the game when a misunderstanding between Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn and Jan Bednarek left Callum Wilson with an open goal.

  • Pogba, Martial out of Man Utd trip to West Ham, James doubtful

Manchester United are still without injured trio Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw for Sunday’s Premier League trip to West Ham United, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said on Friday.

He also said Welsh winger Daniel James is a doubt for the game.

Pogba picked up an ankle injury in a 1-1 draw with Southampton before the international break.

Martial and Shaw have not featured since Manchester United’s league defeat by Crystal Palace on Aug. 24.

“Not really, no,” Solskjaer said, when asked if Pogba and Martial would be fit for the weekend’s match. “They’ve not been training yet so I don’t think so. (Luke) won’t be ready.

James, who has scored three goals in five league games this season, suffered a knock in a 1-0 win over Leicester City last weekend.

He was unavailable for Thursday’s UEFA Europa League victory over Kazakh side Astana.

“Daniel James? I don’t know,” Solskjaer added. “He’s not trained the last few days. Hopefully, but not sure. We’ll have a recovery day with everyone tomorrow and we’ll see on Saturday.”

EPL: Arsenal too scared of Watford, says Xhaka

Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka says the Gunners “were too scared” as they let slip a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Watford.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice in the first half for the visitors but the Hornets hit back after the break through Tom Cleverley and a late Roberto Pereyra penalty.

Watford finished with 31 shots on goal, 23 of those coming in the second half.

“No-one wanted the ball. In the end we are happy to take a point,” Xhaka said.

“We didn’t show our game in the second half, we were too scared.”

Xhaka added: “Every team in the Premier League is strong enough to score but you have to keep calm, to show good character, to be mentally strong. We weren’t today.”

EPL: Watford come from behind to draw Arsenal

Watford fought back from two goals down at half-time to draw at home to Arsenal in Quique Sanchez Flores’ first match since being reappointed Hornets manager.

They levelled the scores when Roberto Pereyra rolled in a late penalty after Tom Cleverley had reduced the deficit when Gunners defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos gave away possession inside his own area, to take only their second point of the season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had put the visitors in front when he collected Sead Kolasinac’s pass on the turn before firing past Ben Foster.

Arsenal doubled their lead as Aubemeyang finished a sweeping team move but the hosts improved after the break as the Gunners unravelled in front of the vociferous home support.

The Hornets had their chances to complete a stunning comeback with a decisive third, but the otherwise impressive Gerard Deulofeu dragged his effort narrowly wide.

The result sees Arsenal move into seventh, while the Hornets remain rooted to the foot of the table.

EPL: Rashford penalty helps Man Utd beat Leicester

Manchester United returned to winning ways and ended Leicester’s unbeaten start to the season by edging to a Premier League victory in a pulsating contest at Old Trafford.

After thrashing Chelsea 4-0 on the opening day, United had failed to win any of their last three games but took all the points to inflict Leicester’s first defeat of the campaign.

Marcus Rashford scored the only goal from the penalty spot in the eighth minute after being tripped by Leicester defender Caglar Soyuncu.

Rashford could have got another in the second half, but his wonderful free-kick from 30 yards curled over the wall and onto the angle of crossbar and post.

Defender Harry Maguire, given a torrid reception by the Leicester supporters, came close to scoring against his old side but headed straight at Kasper Schmeichel.

Leicester grew into the contest with the lively James Maddison twice coming close and left-back Ben Chilwell saw his dipping effort tipped over by David de Gea.

The result means United leapfrog their opponents into fourth place, while Leicester drop down to fifth.

  • Pukki, Klopp win August Premier League awards

Pukki, Klopp win August Premier League awards

Norwich striker Teemu Pukki has been named the Premier League Player of the Month for August.

The 29-year-old beat Burnley’s Ashley Barnes, Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino and Manchester City trio Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne to the award.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp claims August’s Manager of the Month prize after his side won all four of their opening league games.

Roy Hodgson, Brendan Rodgers and Pep Guardiola were the three other nominees for the award.

Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Burnley maintained their perfect start and saw the club record a 13th consecutive league victory.

Pukki scored five goals in four games in August in what is his maiden Premier League season, including a hat-trick in their 3-1 victory against Newcastle.

The Finland international, signed on a free transfer from Danish side Brondby IF in 2018, scored 29 league goals to help Norwich seal promotion to the top flight as Sky Bet Championship winners last term.

  • EPL: Manchester United sack player

Following the arrival of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace, Manchester United have sacked Matteo Darmian, according to James Robson of Evening Standard.
Wan-Bissaka was bought to take over the right-back position at Old Trafford.
Robson in an article on Monday, said the 29-year-old right-back, Darmian, has been ‘told he can leave’ United, while the club will also ‘listen to offers’ for Marcos Rojo.
He wrote, “I’m not shocked that the Reds would let Darmian go after a few average seasons, but with Wan-Bissaka now set to be the starting right-back, it does make sense.
“Personally, though, and I don’t think I’m in the minority here, but I’d much prefer to see Ashley Young leave – although his versatility may well be the reason why he keeps his place within United’s setup.

“Darmian started well but faded off pretty quickly, ironically, the start of his downfall came against Arsenal when he received an absolute mauling from Alexis Sanchez.
“You’d imagine clubs back in his homeland of Italy could well be interested, while I’m not really sure who’d be willing to take Rojo off our hands…”
