Current AFCON 2023 highest goal scorer, Emilo Nsue of Equatorial Guinea has noted that the Nzalang Nacional  will stay very humble despite inflicting a heavy defeat on Ivory Coast at the Alasanne Quattara stadium, Ebimpe Abidjan on Monday night.

TheNewsGuru.com reports that Captain Nsue scored twice as the underdogs stunned the hosts 4-0 on Monday to qualify for the last 16.

“We want all our people to be proud of us,” said Nsue, after a result which could eliminate the Ivorians.

“We have to go step by step, game by game. We are very humble. We have to keep being humble and trying our best.”

The National Thunder finished fourth when they hosted Afcon in 2015 and beat holders Algeria on their way to the quarter-finals at the 2021 edition of the tournament.

However, Equatorial Guinea had previously never won a game by more than two goals at the finals and had lost both of their previous Afcon meetings with Ivory Coast without scoring a goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, had been considered strong contenders for the title before the group stage began and, at 49th in the world, are ranked 39 places above the Equatoguineans in Fifa’s standings.

Côte d’Ivoire head coach, Jean-Louis Gasset has explained why his team were thrashed 4-0 by Equatorial Guinea in their final match of Group A in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Monday.

Gasset, who described the outcome of the match as a nightmare, suggested that Ivory Coast were not efficient in front of goal against Equatorial Guinea.

According to him, Equatorial Guinea gave his team a real lesson.

“It is a nightmare,” Gasset said at his post-match press interview.

“We had prepared well for this match and we got into this match well by going after them and setting the pace.

“We had possession and opportunities, but we couldn’t score. On the other hand, the slightest mini-chance for our opponents turned into a goal.

“In football, you have to be efficient. Equatorial Guinea gave us a lesson in realism.”

He added, “Do I still believe we can qualify? Obviously.

“We won one match out of three, we have people who are behind us. But when you wait for the results of others, that is not a good sign.”

Ivory Coast will still secure a place in the Round of 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams if Cameroon fail to beat Gambia on Tuesday.

AFCON: Our mission is incomplete, says Equatorial Guinea coach Micha

Equatorial Guinea Head Coach, Juan Micha has expressed mixed feelings over his team’s result against Nigeria in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), saying he was unsatisfied with the result.

Equatorial Guinea earned a valuable point on the second day of Group A.

The Nzalang Nacional were able to resist the offensive might of the Super Eagles, largely thanks to the great form of goalkeeper Jesus Ngua, who was subsequently named Man of the Match.

After the draw against Nigeria, it was clearly evident that Micha was not enthused.

In a post-match news conference, Micha refused to see this result as an achievement.

He told newsmen that he intended to continue the work to achieve his objectives in this edition of AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.

“I think this selection that I lead is prepared day by day to compete in this tournamen.

“I am lucky to know the details of football, having been a high level player,” he said.

He added his teammates intended to keep their heads on their shoulders and not plunge into euphoria after this encouraging result.

“Our mission is not complete, we still have a lot to do.

“We are in a group stage, this is the first match. We will try to reach the next stage before seeing what happens next.”

Equatorial Guinea will face Guinea-Bissau on Thursday for the second game.

A victory against the Djurtus will allow Micha and his men to have a step in the round of 16.

During its three previous participations, the Central African country has always managed to get out of the group stages.

  • 80-year-old Obiang re-elected President of Equatorial Guinea for 6th term

80-year-old Obiang re-elected President of Equatorial Guinea for 6th term

President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo has won a sixth term in office, a much-expected result in an authoritarian country with next to no political opposition.

The 80-year-old has been in power for 43 years — the longest rule of any leader alive in the world today except monarchs.

During his election campaign in 2009, Obiang promised “social housing for all” in the oil-rich central African state.

Obiang planned to provide enough housing to raise Malabo’s shanty towns, including Nubili, a mass of tin-roofed shacks along narrow paths that is home to thousands of families in the heart of the city.

Since, some 20,000 housing projects have sprung up in the country of around 1.5 million residents.

But sitting outside his shack in Nubili, 70-year-old Julio Ondo said none of them appeared to be for people like him.

“They’ve made fools of the poor,” he said. I’ve lost all hope of one day living in “dignified housing”.

Most people live in poverty in Equatorial Guinea, the World Bank estimates, while wealth is concentrated in the hands of just a few families.

    – ‘I’ll be dead’ –

In some parts of Malabo today, lines of identical apartment blocks have sprung up as far as the eye can see, built with the profits of high international oil prices.

In the suburb of Buena Esperanza, some 2,300 small detached homes appeared during the 2010s, supposed to welcome families from Nubili.

But today, shiny four-wheel drives and other expensive cars line the neighbourhood’s streets, appearing to indicate the wealth of its new residents.

The homes are being sold for around $15,500, payable in monthly instalments of $78.

But that is astronomical for many in Nubili.

Plantain farmer Antonio Omecha, 72, is one of many who had hoped the housing plan would allow him to leave a slum plagued with disease and frequent fires.

He said he did receive a housing coupon to go and live in Buena Esperanza.

“But we had to pay 1.5 million francs (more than $2,350)” upfront first, he said.

It was impossible on his monthly income of $30.

His neighbour Tobias Ondo, 65, said the new homes were simply too expensive.

“Do you really think someone who works seven days and barely makes 2,000 francs can afford to own such a home?” he said.

“I’ll be dead before I go and live in the public housing promised by the president.”

    – ‘Powerful’ landlords –

Equatorial Guinea is the region’s third richest country, with a GDP per capita of $8,462 last year, after the Seychelles and Mauritius, the World Bank says.

But in 2006, when the oil boom was in full swing, more than three quarters of the population lived in “extreme poverty”, or on less than $1.90 a day, the international financial body said. There have been no new figures since.

The country ranked 172 out of 180 in Transparency International’s 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index.

During his election campaign at the start of the month, Obiang admitted that social housing intended for “people without great means” had been snapped up instead by “people able to build their own home”.

But he did not offer a solution.

Martinez Obiang, of micro-financing firm Atom Finances, says he thinks the homes should have cost no more than the equivalent of $780, payable in tiny monthly instalments of less than $3.

Sociologist Nsogo Eyi said the new homes, including those in Buena Esperanza, did not seem to be serving their intended purpose.

“Some powerful men have bought them to rent them out, including to expats,” he said.

AFP reached out to several of these new owners, but they refused to comment.

  • Oil Theft: Polish, Indian governments seek access to suspects

Oil Theft: Polish, Indian governments seek access to suspects

Nigerian  Government has said it’s ready to grant consular access to foreign countries whose citizens were apprehended and arraigned for oil theft in the country.

The foreigners had evaded arrest on Nigerian waters but got apprehended by the Navy in  Equatorial Guinea and were later brought back to Nigeria.

The suspects  were apprehended while  boarding the MT Heroic Idun vessel.

According to the Nigerian Navy, the vessel arrived at the Akpo field to lift crude oil within the field but had no chance to load before being accosted by the Nigerian Navy Ship Gongola at the terminal.

After 60 days of diplomatic negotiations on the matter, the super tanker was handed over to Nigeria to continue negotiations.

Sixteen of the foreigners onboard were also arraigned for offences bordering on conspiracy, stealing, attempt to deal in crude oil, and false pretenses.

Speaking during a joint briefing on the repatriation of the vessel at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, said the Indian and Polish embassies had requested consular access.

Onyeama, who was represented by the Director of Legal and Consular Department, Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nicholas Ella,  said, “I’m aware of the diplomatic comatose regarding this matter which you stated earlier. I want to also stress and congratulate our mission in Equatorial Guinea for the work they have done. Of recent, we received requests from the Indian Embassy and the Polish Embassy for them to visit and I think more will come requesting consular access.

“I want to assure the international community that Nigeria, being a responsible member of the international community, is ready to respond to its international obligation and grant consular access when requested through the right channel. You don’t need to disturb the Nigerian Navy, go through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

Chief of Naval staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, explained that the vessel owners are painting flase pictures in the media to whip up sympathy from the international community.

Gambo, who was represented by the Chief of Plans and Policy, Rear Admiral Saidu Garba, said the vessel committed an offence against the Nigerian government for entering the restricted zone as well as accusing a Nigerian Navy Ship of piracy on International Maritime Reporting Platforms, among others.
