Ten Hag offers no excuses after Man Utd lose at West Ham

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag offered no excuses after their 2-0 defeat at West Ham.

Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus struck the goals for the hosts.

Ten Hag said: “I think it was a decent 72 minutes where we didn’t take our chances. We should’ve gone in the lead but we didn’t and then it was one moment of switching off.

“We tried. West Ham weren’t running behind us for a long period in the game and then they got the goal and then of course you encourage the team. From that they were very aggressive defending the box and from that moment it’s difficult to create a chance.

“At this moment we are not top, but we have seen last week against the top of this league we were head-to-head. We didn’t score, we had the best opportunities of the game. There we defended very well for 90 minutes, that has to be always our standard like what we did there. You have to bring that to every game on the pitch

“In 2023, we won a Cup, we played the FA Cup final, we were third in the league. There were highlights but we are over-performing, but in this moment we are underperforming. There are reasons for it, we have many injuries, so the team will be better if the injured ones return. We have to be calm, stick together, stick to the plan, we have to do it together.”

On Alejandro Garnacho’s miss, he added: “I think he is confident, he’s in good form at the moment. He was one on one with the keeper and he could’ve taken it but we didn’t.”

  • I’ve been a scapegoat for long time at Man Utd – Sancho

I’ve been a scapegoat for long time at Man Utd – Sancho

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho said he had been unfairly made a “scapegoat” at the club

This was after his manager Erik ten Hag claimed he had been left out of the squad to face Arsenal on Sunday because of poor training performance.

Sancho was a surprise omission for United’s dramatic 3-1 stoppage-time Premier League loss to Arsenal that dropped them to 11th in the table.

“On his performance on training we didn’t select him,” Ten Hag said, when asked about Sancho’s absence from the travelling squad.

“You have to reach the level every day at Manchester United. You can make choices in the front line, so in this game he wasn’t selected.”

The 23-year-old Sancho wasted little time in responding in a lengthy post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Please don’t believe everything you read! I will not allow people saying things that is completely untrue.

“I have conducted myself in training very well this week,” Sancho wrote.

“I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won’t go into.

“I’ve been a scapegoat for a long time, which isn’t fair. All I want to do is play football with a smile on my face and contribute to my team.”

Sancho, who has played 58 league games since joining United in 2021, said he respects all decisions made by the coaching staff.

“I play with fantastic players and grateful to do so,” he said. “Which I know every week is a challenge.

“I will continue to fight for this badge no matter what!”

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was pleased with Bruno Fernandes for victory over Nottingham Forest.

Fernandes scored the matchwinning penalty as United came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag said, “You ask the question [about him] but he showed why we pick him as a leader and a captain.

“He is a brilliant captain, by example, an inspiration. He brings the quality, keeps going. I think he played a very impressive game.”

On the fans, he added: “The fans are entitled to have their opinions. Also, you see a very strong bond between the fans and the team, also away from home. I’m very pleased with that. I want to thank them for that bond by giving them good performances. If we stick together, the fans and the team, we will be successful.”

  • EPL: Harry Maguire stripped of Manchester United captaincy

EPL: Harry Maguire stripped of Manchester United captaincy

Manchester United coach, Erik ten Hag has relieved defender, Harry Maguire of his captaincy duties.

There are reports linking the  defender to West Ham united on a permanent basis, the England defender has found his opportunities limited under Ten Hag and has been tipped to leave the club this summer.

Maguire fell down the pecking order under Ten Hag last season, with Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw all ahead of him in the Dutchman’s central defensive ranks. Now he has had a further drop in status after being stripped of the captaincy.

Bruno Fernandes who regularly wore the armband in Maguire’s absence is expected to take over permanently, but no announcement has been made.

Maguire announced he had held a meeting with the United boss on Sunday, in which the Dutchman informed the defender he would no longer be skipper. The England international was first handed the role by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In a statement on social media, Maguire said: “After discussions with the manager today he has informed me he is changing captain. He outlined his reasons to me and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.”

Maguire was immediately handed the armband by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his arrival from Leicester in 2019 and initially impressed at Old Trafford. But despite shining with England, he has struggled for form at club level, with Ten Hag preferring Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane in central defence.

An official announcement will be made by Ten Hag on who will captain the Red Devils for next season.

FA Cup: Players must believe they can beat City – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says winning the FA Cup final should be enough motivation for players today.

United can also stop Manchester City from winning the Treble.

But Ten Hag says: “I know what is the thinking from the fans but what we want is to restore Manchester United by winning trophies so we have an opportunity to win a trophy and we don’t want to be distracted by anything.

“If it is important for the fans it is important for us so we will give everything to win the Cup. But it is not about stopping them.

“Because it is not necessary. It will not give more motivation for the team because for their motivation is already enough – it can’t be more.

“They want to win a Cup and they have an opportunity. They want to set a crown of the season so what do you need more? What is more motivation?”

This season United lost 6-3 at City before winning 2-1 in January.

Ten Hag added: “You learn from that defeat but you learn from the win as well but I can’t say afterwards that I learn something from that game so we won the second game – I don’t think so.

“What was the difference between those results? The belief. In the Etihad we didn’t show belief. In Old Trafford we were determined to win this game from the first moment on. It is up to us that we show the same belief.”

Ten Hag doesn’t believe in Maguire – Stam

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam says manager Erik Ten Hag does not always believe in Harry Maguire.

Stam feels Maguire should leave Old Trafford this summer and needs to play regularly.

He told the Full Circle podcast, “If I was Maguire, looking at him and how it’s working out for him, or how it’s going this season, I would have said [he should leave], and I think that’s best for him as well because he needs to play.

“You’re at a certain age that you want to play, you need to play football. It seems like Ten Hag doesn’t always believe in Maguire.

“I think the best thing to do is to go somewhere where you can play week in, week out.”

Man Utd vs Sevilla: Ten Hag speaks on replacing De Gea after making howlers leading to goals

Manchester United boss, Erik ten Hag has taken a side on replacing the club’s goalie, David De Gea in subsequent games.

De Gea’s mistakes led to Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Sevilla in the second leg of the quarter-final of the Europa League on Thursday evening.

De Gea committed at least two blunders leading to goal in the encounter versus Sevilla last night in Seville.

Many pundits believe that Ten Hag would be looking for another goalkeeper with better feet as it appears the 32-year-old is finding it difficult playing from the back.

De Gea’s contract would be running out at the end of the season and there are calls for the former Spain International to be replaced.

However, after the defeat last night, Ten Hag was asked if De Gea is United’s long-term goalkeeper.

The Dutchman said, “He is the one with the most clean sheets in the Premier League.

“So it shows he’s a very capable goalkeeper.”

UEL: Why we lost to Sevilla – Man U coach, Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said his players lacked passion and the manner of their Europa League quarter-final exit was “unacceptable”.

This was after the English Premier League side lost 3-0 at Sevilla on Thursday.

Youssef En Nesyri scored twice at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium as Sevilla, 13th in LaLiga, cast aside their domestic struggles to go through 5-2 on aggregate.

Manchester United put in a listless and error-strewn performance, with goalkeeper David de Gea and defender Harry Maguire culpable for a couple of Sevilla’s goals.

Asked if Sevilla displayed more fight than his side, Ten Hag told reporters: “I have to acknowledge, it’s the truth. It’s hard, it’s tough, but it’s the truth.”

The Dutch manager said United had to show more desire and more composure on the ball.

“When you get a setback, you have to deal with it, and carry on … It’s not about playing skills, it’s about character. So be composed and have desire and passion,” he added.

“They had more willingness to win … . I think that’s unacceptable.”

Manager Erik ten Hag was said to have arrived the training ground two hours before the players.

Ten Hag was asked during his post-match press conference if the players had attempted to explain their capitulation, he replied: “No, I didn’t give them the chance until now.

“We have to talk about that, I have only given my opinion about it and we will talk about that tomorrow. I know this team will reset and we have to bounce back and we have shown in the past we can.”
