  • Man Utd select manager from eight-man shortlist

Man Utd select manager from eight-man shortlist

Premier League giant, Manchester United have had eight candidates on their managerial shortlist.

ESPN says Ajax coach Erik ten Hag verbally agreed earlier this week to take over at Old Trafford this summer, replacing interim boss Ralf Rangnick, who is expected to ‘move upstairs’ into a consultancy role.

United briefly considered Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers before their form nose-dived, and were keen on Mauricio Pochettino, but were worried Real Madrid would poach the Paris Saint-Germain boss from under their noses.

The final four-man shortlist included ten Hag, Pochettino, Spain boss Luis Enrique and Sevilla manager Julen Lopetegui.

The other four considered after the sacking of Rangnick’s predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November are said to be Bayern Munich’s Julian Nagelsmann, Chelsea’s Thomas Tuchel, Rodgers and former Real Madrid chief Zinedine Zidane.

However, Nagelsmann – who became the most expensive managerial transfer ever when he moved from RB Leipzig for £22million in July – and Tuchel, manager of United’s rivals Chelsea, were quickly dismissed as realistic options.

A source said: “It’s important to consider the available options. Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp aren’t available and United were never going to get Nagelsmann out of Bayern.

“Tuchel is a real asset to Chelsea too, so he wasn’t a credible option either. So you look at the market, who is capable and gettable, and United have considered them all. They haven’t overlooked anybody they should have spoken to.”

I know I’m good enough to succeed abroad – Ajax coach

Ajax coach Erik ten Hag says he isn’t desperate to work abroad.

The Dutchman is a target for Manchester United and also turned down an approach from Newcastle United.

Ten Hag said, “I think I’m ready for this.

“However, I believe that I am competent enough to take this challenge.”

Ajax coach Erik ten Hag is baffled by Donny van de Beek’s struggles at Manchester United.

Van de Beek is in his second season at United after his departure from Ajax.

Ten Hag told De Telegraaf: “Donny’s situation is difficult to understand.

“If you do not get chances to play, your development will stop, it’s that simple. I have been in contact with him from time to time and try to encourage him.”

Van de Beek was a late substitute in United’s win against Crystal Palace on Sunday, marking the debut for new manager Ralf Rangnick.

  • EPL: Newcastle plan £11m-a-year offer for Ajax coach

EPL: Newcastle plan £11m-a-year offer for Ajax coach

Premier League club Newcastle United are drawing up a massive contract offer for Ajax coach Erik ten Hag.

The Daily Mail says Newcastle would be willing to pay the highly-rated boss a salary of £6million after tax – totalling a gross wage of just over £11m.

The eye-watering package would put Ten Hag behind Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp, who earn £20million and £15m a year respectively, in the order of English football’s best paid bosses.

However, Ten Hag is said to have reservations over leaving Ajax for the new project at Newcastle. The 51-year-old has established a reputation as one of Europe’s best emerging coaches and turned down the opportunity of replacing Jose Mourinho at Tottenham during the close season.

Indeed, leaving Ajax for Newcastle, particularly given their current Premier League predicament, would represent a significant risk for a coach whose profile is on an upward trajectory.
