  • Guardiola angry over Haaland’s penalty kick gesture

Guardiola angry over Haaland’s penalty kick gesture

A magnanimous gesture by Manchester City’s goal machine Erling Haaland left Pep Guardiola fuming on Saturday.

This was after the Norwegian striker ignored his manager’s instructions to take a penalty kick and handed the ball to teammate Ilkay Gundogan.

The German midfielder had scored a first-half brace to put the English Premier League leaders 2-0 up against Leeds United.

But Guardiola yelled from the sidelines for the 22-year-old Haaland to take the penalty kick they had been awarded in the closing minutes.

However, Haaland, who has already scored a Premier League single season record of 35 goals, glanced at Guardiola before handing the ball to Gundogan for him to complete a hat-trick.

It was a move that sent the Spanish manager into fits of rage, especially as Gundogan’s effort was pushed aside by a diving goalkeeper Joel Robles.

“If Gundo scores, everyone is ‘OK, hat-trick, well done’,” Guardiola said following Manchester City’s 2-1 victory.

“But a taker is a taker. At 2-0, this is a business, not a situation where we cannot forget it.”

The 32-year-old Gundogan felt the heat from Guardiola when he stepped up to the penalty kick spot.

“First he showed to Erling that he was quite mad about that, and then also he had a go at me,” Gundogan told reporters. “It is what it is at the end.

“The moment Erling grabbed the ball, I was sure he was going to take it but he looked out for me.

“I checked with him a few times to make sure he was sure. He was certain to hand the ball to me. I was confident to score.”

Haaland had several excellent scoring chances, with a shot that bounced off the crossbar and another that glanced off the post.

With Manchester City in pursuit of their third successive Premier League title, and the win having extended their lead over second-placed Arsenal to four points, Guardiola’s mood somewhat later improved.

“The performance was excellent. We played really, really good,” the Spaniard, whose side have four league games left this season, said by the time he met reporters post-game.

“Who knows if Erling takes the penalty kick and miss it? What happen if Gundo takes the penalty kick and score? So, the question is 2-0, who is the taker? The taker is Erling.

“Second point is that is how Erling is as a person. He is incredible, wants to score goals, but at the same time, the team, the mates are important.

“He had chances to score goals, he didn’t convert, but he played an outstanding game.

“But a taker is a taker. At 2-0, this is a business, not a situation where we cannot forget it.

“Especially in England, it never is over and I want the taker who has more routine, who is a specialist, to take it.”

Treble-chasing Manchester City next head to Real Madrid for the first leg of their 2022/2023 UEFA Champions League semi-final fixture on Tuesday.

Haaland has been very impressive  for Man City so far this season notching up 32 English Premier League goals already.

The Norway international is currently the top scorer in the Premier League and also in the Champions League.

Speaking ahead of Man City’s crucial Premier League tie against Arsenal on Wednesday night at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola revealed at his pre-match press conference that one way to stop Haaland from performing is for the opposition team to have 80 per cent ball possession.

Guardiola said: “From what he [Haaland] has shown in his career, it is difficult, but as a team [you have] to have him involved as little as possible.

“When we [Man City] played against him when he was at Borussia Dortmund, we tried to have 70-80 per cent ball possession.

“When we have the ball, we have more chances, but the game we’re going to play tomorrow [Wednesday] will be a lot of transitions and duels.

“They plan to play a game so aggressive, almost man-to-man, so the way you do the process is difficult,” Guardiola added.

Man City are currently five points behind Arsenal in the Premier League table. However, the Citizens have two games in hand.

EPL: Haaland scores as Manchester City drop points against Everton

Manchester City ended the year 2022 on a frustrating note as their pursuit of league leaders Arsenal suffered a great setback.

Although Erling Haaland scored his 21st English Premier League goal of the season, his team could only manage a draw at the Etihad stadium against the struggling Everton side.

Frank Lampard’s team belied their position near the bottom to dig out a point with a spectacular equaliser from Demarai Gray and they held on through 11 minutes of injury-time caused by a series of delays.

In a game of seven bookings, Haaland was perhaps fortunate to stay on the pitch, having been cautioned for a lunge on Vitaliy Mykolenko and then catching James Tarkowski with a flailing arm.

Aware of the threat he posed, Everton defense line closely watched Haaland and denied him of plenty space in the game.

However, the Norwegian still managed to score in the game but his goal wasn’t enough to grab three point for the Citizens.

The result meant that the blue side of Manchester have suffered a set back in the pursuit of league leaders Arsenal who will be looking to extend its lead later today against Brighthon.

  • Leeds vs Manchester City: Guardiola heaps praises on Rico Lewis

Leeds vs Manchester City: Guardiola heaps praises on Rico Lewis

Manchester City boss,  Pep Guardiola has hailed winger  Rico Lewis after his side’s  Premier League win over Leeds on Wednesday night.

Rodri scored City’s only goal in the first half before golden boy Haaland added two more in the second half to complete the rout.

But Guardiola has now heaped the praises on the effort of 18-year-old Lewis who was surprisingly added to the starting XI despite the availability of Joao Cancelo and Kyle Walker for selection.

The teenage sensation, played very well for City but was substituted out in the 68th minute.

In the post match conference. Guardiola noted that  it was impossible not to hand Rico Lewis his first Premier League start at Leeds after his ‘man of the match’ performance vs Liverpool.

He was impressive in a dual role of right-back and inverted midfielder against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup before Christmas, although his inclusion then was more due to the late returns of Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo from the World Cup, with the expectation both would return for City against Leeds on Wednesday night.

“Without Rico, what we do would be impossible. Defensively, he is so smart, understands the game and is so clever,” he told Amazon Prime.

“That’s why he helps us to do our dynamics so much better. He has played really, really well. He’s an absolute reality for us.”

“The way he played against Liverpool, would be unfair not to let him play again,” Guardiola said.
