Manchester City found their way to the top of the English Premier League table after demolishing Southampton at the Etihad.

Erling Haaland, Phil Foden, Joao Cancelo and Riyad Mahrez all scored a goal each in the encounter.

Haaland  had bungled   series of good chances before finally finding the net for his 15th goal of the Premier League season – but by that point, the game had long since been won.

While the victory moves Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten side back above Arsenal into top spot, a fourth consecutive defeat only adds to the pressure on beleaguered Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Arsenal are looking to reclaim their position but would have to surmount the Liverpool hurdle in Sunday’s fiesty encounter at the Emirate.

UCL: Haaland wrecks former club Dortmund as Manchester City grab second straight win

Norway international, Erling Haaland has dealt his former club a big blow by scoring the winner for Manchester city in the 84th minute of Wednesday’s Champions League encounter.

Manchester City were forced to come from a goal down to beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 on Wednesday and put one foot in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Haaland was out marked for the better part of the game only for him to latch on to a cross from the left side of the pitch to tap in the winner in the dying minutes of the game and condemned his former clubside to a defeat.

The Manchester City’s new acquisition has now scored two Champions League goals in two games for Manchester city.

Haaland has now scored 13 goals in his first eight competitive games for City since they met his bargain £51 million ($58 million) buyout clause from the German giants.

Jude Bellingham had given Dortmund the lead 11 minutes into the second half.

But a triple substitution awoke City from their slumber and two goals in four minutes turned the game around.

EPL: I knew Haaland would deliver – Pep Guardiola

Manchester City boss, Pep Guardiola, has heaped praises on Erling Haaland for his performance saying that his hattrick against Crystal Palace was  not a surprise.

Manchester City was trailing Crystal Palace by 2-0 before perfecting the comeback in the second half of the encounter through goals from Bernando Silva and Haaland’s hattrick.

Guardiola said Haaland earned his goals by remaining focused during a quiet first half against Crystal Palace.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Guardiola hailed Haaland, saying his reliability in front of goal means Man City will always have a chance in games even if they fall behind.

“I would say thanks to me for my brilliant ideas, but I would say Erling has done this since he was born,” Guardiola said of Haaland’s hat-trick.

“Always has done this in his life, at Salzburg, BVB (Borussia Dortmund), always scoring goals. These teams who defend deep he has an incredible sense of goal. The three goals, especially the last one, the first one as well, good goals.”

He added, “I will tell you the numbers, we scored a lot of goals in previous seasons. It was different from the quality of the players we have, but we scored lots of goals. The problem we have now is we concede a lot, before was not the case. We have a lot of time. Right now we struggle to do the uncomfortable things we have to do but still don’t do it. It is important to learn the lesson, win the game.”

Premier League: Haaland scores twice as Man City beat West Ham

Erling Haaland has scored twice on his Premier League debut for Manchester City in a routine 2-0 win away to West Ham United.
After a decent start from the Hammers, the reigning Premier League champions dominated and hardly put a foot wrong with their passing in the first half.
A key moment was goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who had started the game well, being forced off with an injury around the half-hour mark to be replaced by Alphonse Areola.
And it was Areola who conceded a penalty on 36 minutes after clumsily bringing down Haaland. The Norwegian picked himself up to dispatch the spot-kick coolly into the bottom corner to open his account for City.
David Moyes, whose starting XI had contained none of his summer signings, did bring on new Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca around the hour mark with his side looking to punish some uncharacteristically sloppy passing from the visitors.
And the Hammers did improve but Haaland killed the game off with a well-taken low finish after running onto Kevin De Bruyne’s through-ball to make it a debut to remember.
  • Community Shield: How Nunez upstaged Haaland in battle of super-signings

Community Shield: How Nunez upstaged Haaland in battle of super-signings

Liverpool’s new boy Darwin Nunez drew first blood in the battle of the super-signings with an encouraging 30-minute cameo on Saturday.

He capped it with the final goal in a 3-1 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield match played at the King Power Stadium in Leicester, UK.

Manchester City, last season’s English Premier League (EPL) champions, and Liverpool, the English FA and League Cup winners, both paraded their big-money acquisitions in this match.

But it was the Uruguay international who upstaged Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, after he came off the bench in the 59th minute with the score at 1-1.

His aerial presence won the late penalty kick from which Mohamed Salah put Liverpool in front for a second time.

But the former Benfica striker, having earlier been denied a goal by Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, was not finished there.

He stooped to head home his first goal for the Reds in domestic competition in added time.

“I liked the game a lot, but most of the time Manchester City games against us are cool to watch,” Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp said later.

“We played the smart passes. We saw Nunez in dangerous situations. He used the spaces and finished well too.”

One new Manchester City signing did make his mark —- former River Plate forward Julian Alvarez —- climbing off the bench to cancel out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s opener.

But the focus was really on the big men upfront.

The traditional season curtain-raiser played out as expected with the country’s top two sides going at it once again.

But it was the nuance of what the new signings might bring which attracted the intrigue.

Haaland scored 86 goals in 89 matches for Borussia Dortmund before his move to the Manchester.

He is likely to add many more for Manchester City once he and they have adjusted to each other.

The Norway international had the fewest touches of any player in the first half —- eight —- and the service he received throughout was scant.

But that did not mean he was not a threat.

When Andy Robertson initially dispossessed him from Bernardo Silva’s cross, the 22-year-old reacted quickest to fire in a shot which third-choice goalkeeper Adrian batted away.

His next attempt moments later from another Silva cross did not go so well.

It came to him at an awkward height and he could not decide what to do with it and completely mis-kicked.

But he saved his worst for last when he blasted against the crossbar when faced with an open goal six yards out in added time.

Nunez, however, justified Klopp’s decision to continue his integration from the bench.

The 23-year-old scored four second-half goals in a pre-season friendly against RB Leipzig but that was not enough to persuade his manager to start him from the off.

But when he was introduced he was a bundle of energy and, unlike Manchester City with Haaland, Liverpool seemed to be better equipped to supplement his talents.

With virtually his first touch he was brought down by Ederson, who was spared by an offside flag.

Then the Manchester City goalkeeper had to race out to block Nunez’s shot with his chest after Jordan Henderson played him through.

Nunez is more a traditional number nine and less the multi-functional player Klopp usually prefers, but that can work to his advantage.

When he climbed highest to head down, the ball struck the arm of Ruben Dias.

Referee Craig Pawson waved away handball claims but having been advised to consult the pitchside monitor he awarded a penalty kick and Salah swept past Ederson.

But Nunez was not finished there and his poacher’s instinct saw him stoop to head home Robertson’s knockdown in added time.

It was a pulsating finish to a game which had ebbed and flowed, with Alexander-Arnold putting Liverpool ahead in the 21st minute.

Thiago Alcantara’s cross was killed instantly under the foot of Salah, whose pass rolled invitingly into the path of the full-back.

He whipped a shot which just flicked off the head of Nathan Ake on its way in via the far post.

Manchester City improved in the second half and Alvarez, introduced at the same time as Nunez, equalised in the 70th minute.

That was after Adrian saved Phil Foden’s initial effort but fumbled the rebound.

VAR checked offside and, although the goalkeeper appeared to have two hands on the ball, after a lengthy delay the goal was ruled legitimate.

It meant the new signing followed in the exalted footsteps of Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez as only the third Argentinian to score in the Community Shield.

He will, however, still play second fiddle to Haaland while Nunez has begun the process of establishing himself as Liverpool’s long-term option upfront.

Nunez will also help in ensuring the sale of Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich quickly becomes an afterthought.

Premier league defending champions Manchester City have agreed to sign Erling Haaland from German side Borussia Dortmund in the summer.

The 21 year-old Norwegian professional footballer will be joining the premier League side after personal terms were discussed.

He will be made to undergo a medical test before finally putting pen to paper at the close of 2021/2022 season.

Haaland has a £63million release clause in his Dortmund contract, but his agent, Mino Raiola, is set to earn a huge payment. Those fees, plus a signing-on bonus, would likely take the total outlay of the deal towards £100m.

Report also say that Spanish side Barcelona and French Ligue 1 side PSG are also interested in signing the youngster on a permanent deal.

However, pundits have said that Haaland will most likely join Manchester city.

  • Borussia Dortmund insist Haaland won’t be sold now

Borussia Dortmund insist Haaland won’t be sold now

Borussia Dortmund’s head of professional football, Sebastian Kehl, has again said star striker Erling Haaland would not be allowed to leave the club this summer.

Kehl was dismissive when asked if there was a scenario which could see the 21-year-old Norwegian sensation depart Dortmund.

“No! What scenario could that be? We have made a clear commitment,” he said.

Haaland has struck a remarkable 60 goals in 60 competitive games for Borussia Dortmund since joining from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

But he has been a subject of several transfer rumours for months.

On Saturday, he struck all three goals as Dortmund began their German Cup defence with a 3-0 cruise away to lower league Wehen Wiesbaden.

“Erling feels incredibly comfortable with us, he wants to achieve something with this team —— and I don’t have the feeling at all that he wants away,” said Kehl.

Borussia Dortmund have a strong reputation for developing young players and selling them on a profit.

This summer has already seen England winger Jadon Sancho move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund for a large fee.

Haaland is contracted to Borussia Dortmund until 2024.

But it is widely reported he has a release clause of 75 million euros (88.2 million dollars) which can be activated in summer 2022.

That fee is substantially less than his current worth on the open market.

But there are only a few clubs across the world who could conceivably pay the required transfer and his subsequent wages.
