  • Euro 2020: England secure group win after 1-0 victory over Czech Republic

England secured top spot in Group D with a 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic in London on Tuesday to enter the round of 16 at Euro 2020 in high spirits.

Raheem Sterling scored the sole goal of the match by heading in a superb assist by Jack Grealish.

The Three Lions remain in London for their round of 16 game on Tuesday and will face second-placed team in Group F.

This means they can face world champions France, holders Portugal or Germany.

“At some point you have to face the best teams. It is about challenging yourselves,” Sterling said regarding the possible opponents.

The Czechs finished third to secure a spot in the knock-out round in spite of being edged out on goals scored by Croatia, who won 3-1 against Scotland.

The Scots, in fourth, say goodbye to the tournament.

Sterling hit the post right after kick-off but he did not miss his chance in the 12th minute to open the scoring.

Jack Grealish bamboozled two Czech players before assisting Sterling’s simple header into the net.

England saw Harry Kane denied by goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik’s stretched left arm just before Jordan Pickford made a flying save to keep England ahead.

Pickford, however, just watched when Tomas Soucek sent a dangerous effort narrowly wide of the far post.

England’s tempo dropped in the second period, while the Czechs were also not very inspired after the break.

Their top scorer at the tournament Patrik Schick was isolated up front.

His replacement, Tomas Pekhart, had the first serious attempt at goal of the second half in the 83rd minute and shot wide.

England, on the other hand, scored with Jordan Henderson but his goal was ruled out for offside.

“I think there are positives from the game. We kept the ball better today. It gave us more attacking options,” Sterling said.

Sterling praised young team-mate Bukayo Saka, who almost reached Grealish’s cross to head in the first goal.

“I thought Bukayo Saka was brilliant. I told him after the game that he got in the pockets of space, drove at people, he was direct and that’s what you need.”

Saka, chosen as Man of the Match, said the “manager told me to go out and express myself” and emphasised it was important the team would remain at Wembley.

“We have a lot of confidence playing here and the fans are like an extra man for us,” he said.

Manager Gareth Southgate was “super impressed” with Saka and was satisfied with his team.

“We wanted to win the group and we wanted to stay at Wembley —- we’ll wait and see who we play,” he said.

England missed Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell because the pair went into self-isolation.

This had followed their interaction with Chelsea team-mate Billy Gilmour, who tested positive for coronavirus after England played Scotland last Friday.

They are set to be released from quarantine on Tuesday.

Czech Republic coach Jaroslav Silhavy said they were expecting “early pressure and it came. For the goal that we conceded, we did not cover Sterling at all.”

But he added they had to “look at it positively” as the team achieved what they wanted.

“We qualified with a game to spare and competed against England for first place,” Silhavy said.

I’m not finished, grandpa is not dead – Giroud

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has rejected claims he could retire after Euro 2020.

The 34-year-old France international has been on the fringes for France so far at the tournament. Having been an unused substitute against Germany, he was brought on as a substitute in the 76th minute against Hungary.

Giroud, however, stated that he still has the hunger of a 20-year-old.

Giroud told Le Figaro: “I’m not finished, far from it. Count on me, grandpa is not dead!

“I’m almost 35 but have the hunger of a 20-year-old guy.”

Giroud has full faith in himself and believes that his aerial prowess is a useful asset.

He said: “The France team has a fairly incredible strike force, but I have a card to play because there are no other players with my profile. I am here to respond and bring what I want.

“I know how to do it with the team. I have the desire and, if the young people want to move me, they will have to be ready too.”

Euro 2020: England squad security team sacked by FA

The English FA have sacked the England’s Euros security team.

The Daily Mail says the FA have sacked the security team responsible for protecting England’s players during the European Championship after several members of Gareth Southgate’s squad raised concerns about their safety.

The UEFA-appointed firm G4S had been responsible for securing the entrance to the central London hotel where England are staying before their matches at Wembley, but they have been dispensed with after 50 fans were allowed to gather around the team bus the night before their opening game of the tournament against Croatia on June 13.

Numerous players are understood to have told the FA they felt unsafe during the incident with the crowd only being dispersed following the intervention of the team’s own security detail.

Euro 2020: Italy yet to be tested – De Ligt

Juventus’ Holland defender Matthijs de Ligt insists Italy are yet to prove themselves at the Euros.

The Azzurri are into the round of 16, but De Ligt says they’re yet to be tested.

“I’ve watched Italy, they play really well,” said De Ligt.

“They don’t even seem Italians. They attack, they press high up the pitch and that’s nice to see.

“However, just like us, they didn’t play against top teams like Germany, Portugal or France. That’s the next step for them and us.”

  • Brave Denmark into Euro 2020 round of 16 after spanking Russia

Brave Denmark into Euro 2020 round of 16 after spanking Russia

Denmark produced a sensational 4-1 win over Russia in their last group stage match at Euro 2020 on Monday to secure emotional progress into the last 16.

The Danish side are level with Finland and Russia in Group B on three points but advanced for having the better goal difference in matches between the teams.

Denmark were stunned when team star Christian Eriksen had a cardiac arrest in their opener against Finland and had to be revived on the pitch.

The game was resumed after around two hours and the Finish side took the victory.

But backed by an emotional 25,000 fans in Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium, they completed a remarkable turnaround after they lost their second game 2-1 to Belgium.

Mikkel Damsgaard broke the deadlock for Denmark with a stunning goal shortly before the break and Yussuf Poulsen got a second after a huge blunder in the Russian defence.

Artem Dzyuba pulled one back from the penalty kick spot after Aleksandr Sobolev was fouled in the box.

But a brave Denmark sealed the deal with two late goals from Andreas Christensen and Joakim Maehle.

Finland, who were defeated by group winners Belgium 2-0, wait to see if they are among the four best third-placed for a spot in the knock-out stage, while Russia are out.

  • Euro 2020 omission was emotional – Jesse Lingard

Euro 2020 omission was emotional – Jesse Lingard

Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard admits his England omission was tough to take.

After a superb six months on-loan with West Ham, Lingard was in contention for the final Euros squad.

“It was emotional. You’re sad and you’re down, but you’ve got to respect the manager’s decision,” Lingard told Sky Sports.

“Me and Gareth (Southgate) have a great relationship, and now it’s about supporting the boys.

“I love watching England – I’m a fan myself,” he said. “I enjoyed going to the beer garden to watch the first game.

“Last year, November time, I think no one thought I’d get near the team. But I worked hard, did well on loan and England came knocking.

“I enjoyed the camp in March – it’s always good to be back with the boys. I played in those games, and then coming up to the Euros, being involved in the 33-man squad was brilliant as well.

“I worked so hard to get there. I didn’t get picked, but I’ll always carry on supporting the boys.”

Euro 2020: Netherlands, Austria through to knockout stage

Goals from Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum helped the Netherlands beat North Macedonia to make it three wins from three at Euro 2020.

Austria reached the knockout stages of the European Championship for the first time as a deserved win over Ukraine secured a last-16 tie against Italy.

Franco Foda’s side produced a courageous display in Bucharest and Christoph Baumgartner’s close-range finish proved enough to earn a Wembley meeting with the Italians on Saturday.

Ukraine – third in Group C – must wait to see if their tally of three points proves enough to reach the knockout stages and in truth their timid display here could have been punished more heavily by Austria.

Dembele forced to withdraw from France’s Euro 2020 squad

Ousmane Dembele has been forced to withdraw from the France squad with an injury he picked up in the draw against Hungary at the weekend.

The Barcelona forward had come on as a second-half substitute at the Puskas Arena, with France trailing to Hungary, but he had to be replaced by Thomas Lemar in the 87th minute after feeling discomfort in his knee.

Les Bleus have now confirmed that after examinations in hospital he will fly back home and will play no further part in Euro 2020.

Didier Deschamps confirmed it was a tendon issue in his knee and Dembele did not feature at all as the squad trained in Budapest on Sunday evening.

A statement released from the French camp on Monday morning confirmed he had undergone radiological examinations in Budapest Hospital on Sunday evening and his recovery time means he will miss the rest of the tournament.

  • Germany legend declares Chelsea star ‘just like Zidane’

Germany legend declares Chelsea star ‘just like Zidane’

Germany World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus has likened Chelsea midfielder Kai Havertz to Zinedine Zidane.

Havertz was outstanding for Germany in their Euros victory over Portugal on the weekend.

“I compare him with Zinedine Zidane in terms of skills, technique, vision and anticipating a situation,” Matthaus told Kicker.

“Zidane did not seem fast, but that was when he held the ball. Havertz can do that too.”

However, Matthaus emphasizes that Havertz still has a long way to go to reach the absolute top.

“He could score more goals and improve in short movements with special training. He has a good eye, good ball control, good positional play, good technique.

“In addition, Havertz plays intelligently and uses his body well. Havertz is on his way, but nuances will determine whether he gets to the top, whether he becomes an excellent player or just a very good one.”

  • Euro 2020: Wales into last 16 despite defeat to Italy

Euro 2020: Wales into last 16 despite defeat to Italy

Italy made eight changes to their side but they were still too strong for Wales as they defeated the Welsh 1-0 in the final Group A encounter.

Italy had already qualified for the last 16 and despite the narrow scoreline had little trouble in retaining their 100% record in the Group and their 8th win over Wales in 10 games.

Wales battled in the first half to keep themselves in the game as they struggled with the long Italian diagonal ball played to either far post.

Chances came and went for the Italians in that opening period with Belotti, Emerson, Chiesa and Pessina all going close and it was the latter who broke the deadlock on 39 minutes.

A clever free kick by Verratti was sent in low for Pessina to meet the ball with a neat flick across keeper Ward and into the far corner. The same player almost repeated the feat a couple of minutes later but just failed to make contact.

For Wales the nearest they came was header narrowly over by Gunter from a corner.

Nothing changed after the break and Bernardeschi immediately hit the post from a free kick. Then came a Wales chance. Ramsey was through on keeper Donnarumma but from a tight angle he lost the ball and the chance was gone.

It then got worse for Wales as they were reduced to ten men on 55 minutes as Ampadu was shown red for stamping on the ankle of Bernardeschi.

Ward saved from Belotti after a quick Italian break used their one man advantage to the full. But it was Wales who should have levelled but the unmarked Bale fired a volley over from 10 yards.

Italy comfortably played out time and really should have scored more but credit the battling Wales rearguard with preventing this and who also qualify for the last 16 despite this defeat.
