Ronaldo ‘drink water’ push wipes $4B off Coca Cola’s market value

Juventus ace Cristiano Ronaldo wiped $4 billion off Coca Cola’s market value after rejecting bottles of the soft drink at Portugal’s pre-match presser on Monday.

Ronaldo removed the two bottles out of camera shot as he sat down for his Euros media conference before holding up his bottle of water and declaring ‘drink water’.

The Sun reports Coca-Cola’s share price promptly dropped from $56.10 (£39.80) to $55.22 (£39.19).

At one point during the day 1.6 per cent of the company’s value had been wiped off – although there was a late recovery, with the price back up to $55.44 (£39.38) at closing.

Ronaldo, 36, has a famously strict diet and avoids sugary foods, eating clean up to six times a day to maintain his incredible physique while he ages.

While still at Real Madrid, the club doctor said he had the body of a player ten years younger and could continue playing at the top level into his 40s.

Ronaldo scored twice for Portugal in last night’s victory over Hungary in Budapest.

Euro 2020: France defeat Germany with Hummels own goal

World champions France started their Euro 2020 campaign with a win over Germany thanks to a Mats Hummels’ own goal in a high-quality heavyweight Group F match.

Hummels – recalled for this tournament after being told by coach Joachim Low in 2019 that his international career was over – diverted Lucas Hernandez’s cross into his own net in the first half of a fascinating contest in Munich.

Tournament favourites France were marginally the better of the two sides, but appeared to be in third gear for much of it.

Paul Pogba sent the ball over the bar from a corner with his shoulder, Kylian Mbappe had an angled shot saved, he and Karim Benzema had goals ruled out for offside and Adrian Rabiot hit the outside of the post.

Germany came into the finals with big questions over their best XI as well as their chances of success after an uncharacteristically turbulent few years, but proved typically competitive finals opponents.

Thomas Muller – another player recalled after being jettisoned by Low – headed wide, with Ilkay Gundogan slicing an effort past the post from a good position in the box and Serge Gnabry seeing a shot deflected on to the roof of the net.

It was not just the actual football that was of interest either.

There was a hint that Germany defender Antonio Rudiger may have bitten the shoulder of Pogba in the first half, although replays proved inconclusive.

This came after a Greenpeace protestor had parachuted into the stadium, shedding equipment as he crashed to the pitch before being hurried away by security.

France’s win means they and Portugal, who beat Hungary 3-0 in Budapest earlier on Tuesday, take the early initiative in a highly competitive Group F.

Euro 2020: Ronaldo breaks record in Portugal win

Cristiano Ronaldo became the top scorer in men’s European Championship history as Portugal beat Hungary in front of more than 60,000 fans in Budapest.

Ronaldo converted an 87th-minute penalty for his 10th goal in the competition, overtaking France’s Michel Platini on nine goals.

His 11th came only a few minutes later when he took the ball around goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi for Portugal’s third.

Hungary had looked on course for an unlikely draw until they conceded three goals late on.

The deadlock was broken in the 84th minute when Raphael Guerreiro’s shot with the outside of the foot took a massive deflection off defender Willi Orban to break Hungary’s brave resistance.

The other Group F teams are World Cup holders France and former champions Germany and they meet in Munich in Tuesday’s late game.

Man Utd goalkeeper leaves Euro 2020

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been called up to England’s Euro 2020 squad to replace injured Dean Henderson.

Manchester United keeper Henderson has withdrawn from the tournament with a hip issue that would “continue to limit his involvement in training”.

He will return to his club for further assessment and treatment.

Sheffield United’s Ramsdale has no senior England caps but was part of Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad before the tournament.

He will follow Covid-19 testing protocol before entering the England camp.

The 23-year-old will be one of three goalkeepers in the squad, joining Everton’s Jordan Pickford and West Brom’s Sam Johnstone.

England face Scotland in their second Group D match at Wembley on Friday.

Christian Eriksen offers fresh update after Denmark collapse

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen says he is “fine under the circumstances” as he continues his recovery from a cardiac arrest.

Speaking after he collapsed in Saturday’s game with Finland, he said he would “cheer on the boys” during the rest of Euro 2020.

The Inter Milan playmaker, 29, is now in a stable condition in hospital.

“Big thanks for your sweet and amazing greetings and messages from all around the world,” the former Tottenham star said on Instagram.

“It means a lot to me and my family.

“I’m fine – under the circumstances. I still have to go through some examinations at the hospital, but I feel OK.

“Now, I will cheer on the boys on the Denmark team in the next matches. Play for all of Denmark.”

Euro 2020: Spain unable to break stubborn Sweden

Spain endured a frustrating opening game in Euro 2020 as they failed to make their near total dominance pay against a rigid and stubborn Sweden in Seville.

Luis Enrique’s side had the vast majority of possession and territory in the match, which at times resembled a session of attack versus defence, but were unable to take advantage of the good opportunities their build-up play yielded.

The best fell to Alvaro Morata, who was allowed in on goal by a fluffed attempted clearance from Marcus Danielson but side-footed his shot wide.

Dani Olmo also saw a close-range header tipped round the post by Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen, and Koke sliced an effort off target from inside the box.

Sweden’s best chance fell to La Liga’s young player of the year Alexander Isak, who muscled his way in for a shot that deflected off a Spanish defender, hit the post and looped straight to grateful keeper Unai Simon.

Isak also fashioned a great opportunity for partner Marcus Berg, who somehow managed to steer a shot from near point-blank range wide at the back post.

The result will do little to lift the downbeat mood of some of the Spanish public, who have seen the preparations of their national side overshadowed by the fallout of positive Covid-19 tests for two players and squad selection controversy.

The draw in Seville means Slovakia have the early advantage in Group E courtesy of their surprise 2-1 win over Poland earlier on Monday.

  • Schick double stuns Scotland and silences Hampden crowd

Schick double stuns Scotland and silences Hampden crowd

Scotland’s first tournament match in 23 years ended in defeat after Patrik Schick’s incredible halfway-line goal helped the Czech Republic inflict a deflating opening Euro 2020 loss at Hampden.

Schick’s goal, which added to his headed first-half opener, punctured a carnival atmosphere with a sharp dose of reality for Steve Clarke’s side.

Around 9,000 fans witnessed the Scots strike the bar amid a glut of chances, but hopes of a first foray beyond the group stage already looks a tough ask.

Scotland now go to Wembley with a heightened need for a positive result against a buoyant England, before their group campaign comes to a close against Croatia in Glasgow next Friday.

Scotland rampaged out the blocks. John McGinn’s early snapshot triggered a roar from the crowd, every booming run and cross from Andy Robertson had the crowd on their feet. But as the game looked destined for a stalemate at half-time, the hammer blow arrived. A corner was just about cleared, only for the Scots to switch off.

Vladimir Coufal overlapped with space and time on his side, his delivery being met by Schick, who steered his header home while sandwiched between Liam Cooper and Grant Hanley.

Che Adams was introduced at half-time and he made a difference, but not before Marshall twice saved Scotland just seconds after the restart.

Scotland rallied again. A floated effort from Jack Hendry scudded the bar as Hampden gasped. They did so again as a sclaffed Tomas Kalas clearance looped over Vaclik, who just recovered to clear.

If only Marshall could have done likewise three later. Hendry’s attempted drive was charged down with Scotland exposed badly.

The ball broke to Schick on the halfway line, and the Bayer Leverkusen man didn’t even look up as his astonishing arcing shot arrowed over Marshall. Hampden was so silent the noise of it hitting the net could be heard.

  • Euro 2020: France stronger than Germany only on paper – Rudiger

Euro 2020: France stronger than Germany only on paper – Rudiger

Antonio Rudiger says France are stronger than Germany only on paper ahead of their Group F Euro 2020 opening tie on Tuesday.

Les Blues are among the favourites for this year’s European Championship.

The reigning FIFA World Cup champions have added Karim Benzema to an already star-studded attack, which includes Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann.

Many are tipping Didier Deschamps men to win the competition with their bolstered forward line.

Their group at Euro 2020, though, includes the Germans and Portugal, who won the 2016 competition, beating France in the final, while Hungary make up the numbers.
But Rudiger isn’t paying attention to the hype.

“France look stronger on paper, but that’s just on paper,” Rudiger told a press conference.

“They can be favourites for all I care, they obviously have great forwards. We need to dig deep and show what we’re made of. We’re ready.”

Rudiger, and teammates Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, had a tremendous end to the season with glory in Portugal with Chelsea but he’s insisted all players are going to be import for Joachim Low’s side.

He added: “Whether you’re from Bayern or Chelsea doesn’t matter, every player is important.

“Obviously we had a good end to the season, which can help us here.”

Ex-Super Eagles coach tells Werner: Be more selfish

Former Super Eagles coach Berti Vogts has offered advice to Chelsea striker Timo Werner ahead of their Euro 2020 opener.

Werner is expected to start on the bench for tomorrow night’s clash with France.

Vogts told Sportbuzzer: “Many accuse him of not scoring enough goals, and he really has to work on it.

“As a striker, you should not think about using the man next to you first. Scoring a goal must always be your first targe. Because a striker is judged by goals, it is heroic when you make the decisive goal. So, Timo Werner: be more selfish!

“I would like to see Timo Werner up there. He can get into important spaces in front of the goal with his speed, right there, in the middle, the French are vulnerable. He can do a lot with his strength one on one.”

Euros can’t be won without these 2 players – Rooney warns England

Former England captain Wayne Rooney says they can’t get carried away with victory over Croatia in their Euro 2020 opener.

Rooney insists the Three Lions’ main priority should be getting Manchester United defender Harry Maguire and Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson fit.

Both stars were nursing injuries when selected in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the summer tournament.

But Henderson has since featured in England’s 1-0 friendly win over Romania and was named on the bench for the team’s opener against Croatia, while Maguire has re-joined the squad in training.

Derby boss Rooney told Sky Sports: “There’s a lot of quality in the squad, my only worry is a lack of experience – it’s important Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson get fit because they will be vital moving forward.

“Quality-wise they have as much as anyone in the competition and they have a great chance.”

Despite the two stars not featuring in England’s win, the team’s all-time record goalscorer added he was impressed with the performance at Wembley.

“It was a good positive start, a solid professional performance,” Rooney added.

“With the heat it was never going to be an end-to-end game, it was always going to be a game of moments.

“To win that was massive, Croatia are a good team and it will give the players a relief that they are comfortable in the group now.

“They’ll be a bit more relaxed going into the game against Scotland and if they didn’t win they could have been a bit anxious.”
