Euro 2024: Paul Merson predicts Spain vs England final

Former England and Arsenal legend Paul Merson has predicted the outcome of the Euro 2024 final match between England and Spain.

Both England and Spain defeated France and the Netherlands  respectively to reach the finals of this year’s tournament.

Spain beat former World champions France 2-1 to book a place in the final and the game between England and Netherlands ended 2-1 in favour of Gareth Southgate’s men.

Both teams will tackle eachother on Sunday to ascertain who becomes European champions.

“Spain won’t do what Holland did against England – they will play their own game and look to take the game to the opposition as they’ve done at Euro 2024 so far,” Merson said, according to sportskeeda.com.

“England have been solid with three at the back, but with Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams on the flanks, Spain have the perfect set-up to play against a team that lines up with a back three.

“I think England will just nick it or Spain will blow England out of the water.

“I strongly believe the game will be decided by the midfield battle.

“I just hope England go with four at the back as the likes of Kyle Walker and Shaw can be tasked with handling Williams and Yamal, while the two central defenders can try to neutralize Alvaro Morata’s threat.

    “Prediction: Spain 1-2 England.”

Euro 2024: How Netherlands fans attacked England supporters in Dortmund bar

During Wednesday’s Euro 2024 semi-final in Dortmund, five people sustained minor injuries after England fans were reportedly attacked by Netherlands supporters, according to UK police.

Police indicated that a group of Netherlands fans initiated the violence, targeting England supporters in bars and attempting to seize flags. Despite the majority of Netherlands fans attending to enjoy the game peacefully, some groups were identified as posing a risk.

UK police were present in Germany to collaborate with local authorities during the match, which ended with England’s 2-1 victory.

Social media footage emerged showing a group of fans throwing chairs towards a bar, with one person visibly wearing a Dutch football shirt. Individuals inside the bar were seen shielding themselves and later engaging in further altercations, involving objects being thrown both inside and outside the establishment.

Leo, a bar employee, recounted the incident to the BBC, stating, “Initially, it was a small altercation involving a few individuals. I tried to intervene, but things quickly escalated, leading to chaos and property damage. It’s truly distressing.”

Leo added that the bar’s television was damaged in the scuffle, preventing them from screening the game.

In a statement, the UK Football Policing Unit acknowledged the reports and videos circulating about disorder in Dortmund, confirming instances of Dutch fans assaulting England supporters and attempting theft of flags. They noted the presence of certain “risk supporters” among the tens of thousands of Netherlands fans who traveled to Dortmund for the match.

The Dutch Football Association reported a total of 110,000 Netherlands fans present in Dortmund, outnumbering the 40,000 English supporters. Ollie Watkins secured a last-minute victory goal for England, who will now face Spain in Sunday’s final in Berlin.

Euro 2024 final: How we will play Spain – Southgate

Manager of England national football team, Gareth Southgate has given an inkling of how his side will play against Spain in the Euro 2024 final on Sunday.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports England’s last-gasp victory over the Netherlands in their semi-final on Wednesday set them up against Spain, who had earlier best France to qualify for the final.

Southgate, who noted The Three Lions showed character and resilience against the Netherlands, stressed they are now ready to take the final step and lift their first major trophy in almost 60 years.

Substitute Ollie Watkins scored in the 91st minute to send England through to their second successive European Championship final with a 2-1 win.

Their overall performance was an emphatic answer to the criticism heaped on his side for some earlier languid showings.

“We all want to be loved, right?” Southgate told a press conference.

“When you are doing something for your country and you are a proud Englishman, when all you read is criticism it is hard.

“To be able to celebrate a second final is very, very special. We have given people some amazing nights, some of the best nights in 50 years.”

Southgate, who took over in 2016, has now led them to at least the quarter-finals in the last four major tournaments, the only European side to achieve this feat.

They lost to Italy on penalties in the Euro 2020 final but now have the chance to go one better against Spain in Sunday’s showcase in Berlin.

“It shows the more modern England way but also the resilience and character of the group.

“Ollie Watkins has trained like that every day. He has trained for his moment no matter how frustrated.”

“They had each others’ back, they bonded so well and tonight it was an example of that.”

England needed penalties to overcome Switzerland in the last eight before the late winner on Wednesday.

Southgate said his team had learned from knockout matches since the 2018 World Cup in Russia where they lost in the semi-finals to Croatia.

“We are more calm going into the knockout games. In Russia we had not won a knockout game in 10 years,” Southgate said.

“To be able to take the team to the first final overseas I am immensely proud of that,” he said.

England won the 1966 World Cup on home soil while the Euro 2020 final was also held at Wembley.

They will now face the form team of the tournament Spain, who have won all their matches in Germany.

“We will have to get the ball off them first,” Southgate said of their next opponents.

“It is not as simple as us having the ball and making them run. We have to be exceptional with the ball and without it. They have been the best team.”

“We are starting to show a better version of ourselves,” he said, adding they had one less day than Spain, who beat France on Tuesday in their semi-final, to prepare.

“But we are in there with what we have shown to this point. We have as good a chance as they do.

“We have come here to win it. It is a huge task but we are still here and fighting.”

Euro 2024:Why we lost to England – Ronald Koeman

The Netherlands head coach, Ronald Koeman, expressed his belief that his team deserved extra time in their Euro 2024 semi-final loss to England.

The Dutch took an early lead in the first half before Harry Kane equalized from the penalty spot. In the 91st minute, Ollie Watkins scored the winner by capitalizing on Cole Palmer’s pass.

Speaking to ITV after the game, Koeman said, “In the second half, it was more 50/50. We had problems in our midfield in the first half and couldn’t control how they played between the lines with Bellingham and Foden, which was really difficult. We had to adjust by adding another player in midfield, and then it became a 50/50 match.

“My feeling was that in the last 20-25 minutes, our team was perhaps a little fresher than England.”

England, known as the Three Lions, will face Spain, La Roja, for the trophy on Sunday in Munich.

Euro 2024: England beat Netherlands 2-1, qualify for final

The Three Lions of England have reached the Euro 2024 final after Ollie Watkins’ superb last-minute strike secured a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands.

In a lively start in Dortmund, Xavi Simons capitalized on Declan Rice’s error to score a stunning goal inside the first seven minutes.

England responded swiftly, with Harry Kane being fouled by Denzel Dumfries in the penalty area. Kane, playing for Bayern Munich, converted the controversial penalty after a lengthy VAR review, despite intense debate in the ITV studio, where Gary Neville labeled the decision “a disgrace.” Phil Foden’s sublime skill almost gave Gareth Southgate’s side the lead.

As extra time loomed, substitute Watkins, who came on for Kane, fired a shot home from a narrow angle, securing England’s place in Sunday’s final.

This result marks England’s second consecutive appearance in a Euro final, where they will face Spain in Munich.

  • My Euros was a failure, I will go on holiday – Mbappe

My Euros was a failure, I will go on holiday – Mbappe

France captain Kylian Mbappe has admitted that he had a miserable Euro 2024.

The Real Madrid-bound striker has been extremely self-critical of his displays for Les Bleus throughout the tournament in Germany.

Mbappe, whose team lost 2-1 to Spain in the semi final, felt that his Euro 2024 campaign was a failure.

“In football you’re good or not good. I wasn’t good,” he said to reporters post-game.

    “My Euros was a failure.

“I wanted to be European champion… I will now go on holiday.

“I will rest well, it will do me a lot of good, then I will get ready to start a new life. There’s a lot to do.”

  • Euro 2024 exit: Why we lost to Spain – Deschamps

Euro 2024 exit: Why we lost to Spain – Deschamps

Inefficiency in front of goal cost France at the European Championship, team head coach Didier Deschamps said after Tuesday’s 1-2 loss to Spain saw them go out at the semi-finals stage.

France scored four goals in six matches at the tournament and Randal Kolo Muani’s early effort in Munich on Tuesday was the first they had scored from open play.

They benefitted from two own goals and a penalty kick.

Wayward shooting, notably from out-of-form team captain Kylian Mbappe, did not help their cause after they went 2-1 down and were searching for an equaliser.

“I am the one who has to take responsibility,” said Deschamps, after questions about the poor form of Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, previously another key player for France.

“We didn’t have all the offensive weapons either, and we had to adapt for different reasons. We didn’t have the usual influence.

“The pair of them didn’t play as well as they usually do, or to 100 percent of their capacity. But they were coming off long seasons and it was difficult for them to find their efficiency,” Deschamps told a news conference.

“We came up against a very good Spanish team, who confirmed all the potential they had shown before.

“We could have done certain things better against an opponent, who had a lot of control of the game…  We fought until the end, but we had our limits too, for different reasons.

“We had complicated situations. We were playing a sixth game and so maybe we had a little less energy too.”

Deschamps explained that Mbappe’s decision to play without a mask had been cleared by the French medical team.

This was after the attacker ditched the protection he had used since returning to the side after breaking his nose in France’s opening game of the tournament against Austria.

Mbappe had previously said it had irritated him, hampering his vision and became difficult to wear with all the sweat during the game.

Euro 2024 progress to final: Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente reacts

Meanwhile, Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has hailed his team’s quality and cohesion in coming from a goal down to beat France and reach the Euro 2024 final on Tuesday.

It was a feat he took no credit for and said was all about his players’ insatiable hunger for success.

De la Fuente said his team had versatility and outstanding individual qualities, which when put together created a special brand of football.

He added that the same brand of football would be on show in Sunday’s final, regardless of whether the opponent was England or Netherlands.

“Our idea of football is based on our self-assurance. This is what we want to play, we want to play to our strengths.

“I know that we are able to play football, we’ve seen it throughout the tournament.

“Individually they are fantastic but they offer the collective benefits of their individual qualities … they always work for the common good, for the collective effort.

“They are very generous in their efforts and work rate. This is just one more sign that this is an insatiable team, that they want to keep improving with the spirit of sacrifice,” he told reporters.

Spain went behind to an early goal from France’s Randal Kolo Muani before teenager Lamine Yamal levelled with a brilliant strike in the 21st minute.

Dani Olmo added a second just a few minutes after in a spectacular first half.

De la Fuente hit back at critics who had previously questioned some of his decisions and team selections, reminding them that he knew his players best after a long history with many of them.

“I want you to know that this may surprise you more than it surprises us, because we knew the possibilities we had …

“I know these footballers and I make my decisions based on how much I know them.

“It’s not out of a whim. You’ve been asking for this player or this other player, when you don’t know the history behind each and every one of them.

“We do know – me and the technical staff – and I know my players can give much more and they can improve and be even better,” he said.

De la Fuente had special praise for Yamal, whose goal he described as “a touch of genius. We all know who he is. We need to take care of him.

“I want him to work with the same humility, keep his feet on the ground in order to keep improving, learning with the same kind of attitude and that professionalism, that maturity that he shows on the pitch.

“He looks like a much more experienced player to be honest.

“But fundamentally I celebrate that he’s in our team, that he’s Spanish and that we count on him and I hope we can enjoy him for years to come.”

  • Euro 2024: Lamine Yamal reacts after ‘wonder goal’ against France

Euro 2024: Lamine Yamal reacts after ‘wonder goal’ against France

Spain teenager Lamine Yamal on Tuesday sought to play down excitement over his wonder goal against France.

Yamal, however, said reaching the European Championship final was a dream come true for him – and his mother too.

Sixteen-year-old Yamal eclipsed Brazilian great Pele to become the youngest player to score in a World Cup or Euros with a stunning 21st-minute strike.

The ball had sailed into the top corner, helping Spain come from a goal down to beat France 2-1.

He was asked how he felt about scoring what could be the goal of Euro 2024.

“I’m really happy for the victory and for getting to the final.

“I don’t know if it’s the best goal of the tournament but it’s the most special for me because getting to a final with the national team in the Euros is something super special for me,” he told reporters.

With his creativity, pace and panache, Yamal has glittered as part of a Spain side who have won all their six matches at Euro 2024. They are now within reach of a record-breaking fourth Euros title.

His coach Luis de la Fuente described Yamal’s goal as “a touch of genius.”

Yamal was asked if he was aware he had become an icon of the tournament and said it did not matter what people thought of his individual contribution.

“I try not to look at that too much. I don’t know if I’m the icon or not. That doesn’t really help anything on the pitch.

“I need to help my team, that’s what I try to do and that’s what I tried to do today.

“I was really happy after the final whistle. It’s a dream come true, reaching a final with the senior national team,” he said.

He added: “Even my mum said it was her dream too. So, I’m really happy that was my goal against France, my first goal against France, in a semi-final.”

Yamal’s goal and defeat of France was the perfect reply to an earlier remark by French midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

Rabiot had reportedly said the impressive Yamal would have to do much more against Les Bleus if he wanted to play in the final.

Yamal during the match ran to a television camera yelling “speak now, speak now.”

He was asked who he was talking to, but declined to say.

“The person I’m talking about, this person will know who this person is,” he said.

Euro 2024: Spain zoom into final, defeat France 2-1

The La Roja of Spain on Tuesday night zoomed into the final of the ongoing Euro 2024 tournament after defeating France 2-1 at the Munich Arena in Germany.

The Les Blues of France took the lead inside
8th minute through Randal Kolo Muani but Lamine Yamal and Dani Olmo reacted quickly with two goals in the first half to turn the table around for Spain

16-year -old  Yamal scored a wondergoal to become the youngest scorer in men’s European Championship history.

The youngster fired a stunning strike into the top cover from outside the penalty area to equalise after Randal Kolo Muani’s early opener in the semi-final in Munich.

Teammate, Olmo then struck moments later to give Spain the lead, as his goal-bound shot deflected in off France defender Jules Kounde to go past Maignan in goal.

A tight affair in the second half saw the two teams manage few shots on target each.

All efforts to score on both ends proved abortive in the second 45 minutes of the thrilling encounter.

The result meant Spain will face either of England or Netherlands who play in the second semi -final on Wednesday.

The Euro 2024 final will be played in Munich on Sunday, July 14th.
