    Euro 2024: England book second round qualification with a game to spare in group C

    The Three Lions of England have booked a spot in the knockout phase of the ongoing Euro 2024 ahead of its final group game against Slovenia on Tuesday evening.

    England currently sit top of Group C on four points after beating Serbia and drawing with Denmark, and following Monday night’s results which saw Spain beat Albania while Italy snatched a late 1-1 draw against Croatia, it means that the Three Lions will be guaranteed to finish as one of the best third-placed teams from the group stage.

    After 12 teams would have secured automatic qualifications four of the best third-placed teams out of all six groups will go through to the last-16 and with England, France and Netherlands already on four points with one game each remaining, all three nations are guaranteed a spot in the last 16.

    If England beat Slovenia to secure top spot in Group C on Tuesday, they will face a third-place team from either Group D, E or F.

    Highly rated Scotland have exited the ongoing Euro 2024 in Germany after posting unsatisfactory performances in their group games.

    They  became the second team to be eliminated from Euro 2024.

    The Tartan Army lost 1-0 to Hungary in their final Group A fixture on Sunday night.

    Steve Clarke’s men came into the game with one point, needing a win to at least finish in third place.

    Hungary moved up to third in Group A and are in with a shout of progressing to the last 16.

    It would be recalled that Poland have already been confirmed to exit after their second game in the tournament following the 0-0 draw between France and the Netherlands on Friday night.

    More teams will be eliminated from the tournament today after the group B and C fixtures.

    Four teams have already made it to the round of 16 at the ongoing Euro 2024 in Germany.

    Switzerland joined Germany and Spain on Sunday night to secure second round ticket after playing a 1-1 draw with the German Machine in Frankfurt.

    Ndoye’s goal was cancelled out by a late Fullkrug header.

    Germany finished top of Group A with seven points, while Switzerland progressed as runners-up with five points.

    Portugal and Spain have also qualified for the next round.

    Switzerland will take on the team that finishes second in Group B, while Germany faces the team that finishes second in Group C.

    Both matches are on Saturday.

    Portugal are waiting for the best third-placed team from Group A, B or C and Spain take on the best third-placed team from Group A, D, E or F.

    Euro 2024: Portugal thrash Turkey 3-0, progress to knockout stage

    Portugal on Saturday evening cruised into the round of 16 of the ongoing Euro 2024 after thrashing Turkey 3-0 to go top of group F.

    Manchester City midfielder, Bernardo Silva hammered in the first goal of the game on the right side of the net for his first international goal at a major tournament for Portugal.

    Few minutes later, Portugal lost possession in Turkish territory, but then defender Samet Akaydin kicked the ball past goalkeeper Altay Bayindir and into their net for an own goal and Portugal’s second of the evening.

    In the 58th minute, a deflected pass went to Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portugal star passed it to Bruno Fernandes, who smacked in their third goal to hand the Portuguese a convincing win that sent them to the top of the table.

    A couple of missed chances ruined Turkey’s chances of reducing the deficit or grabbing a consolation goal in the group F encounter.

    The result meant that Portugal has qualified for the knockout phase of the Euro 2024.

    Euro 2024: Georgia, Czech Republic settle for 1-1 draw in group F encounter

    Debutant Georgia earned first ever point in a major tournament after playing out a 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic on Saturday afternoon.

    Georges Mikautadze slotted in from the penalty spot to score for the Georgians in first-half stoppage time.

    Upon resumption of second half, Czech Republic – quarter-finalists three years ago – were by far the more dangerous side throughout and finally replied when Patrik Schick turned in after substitute Ondrej Lingr hit the post.

    Schick then limped off with an injury as Georgia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili produced save after save to ensure a share of the spoils.

    However, Georgia would have claimed all three points but striker, Lobjanidze wasted a a three-on-one encounter in the final seconds of the match.

    The result means both Goergia and Czech head into their final games in Group F on Wednesday with a chance to progress to the last 16.

    Euro 2024: Alan Shearer slams England over lacklustre performance against Denmark

    England legend and former Newcastle United striker, Alan Shearer has hit out at the entire Three Lions squad for the 2024 European championships for their lacklustre performance against Denmark.

    It would be recalled that England and Denmark settled for a 1-1 draw on Thursday in Frankfurt.

    The former Premier League frontman rued the lack of energy and quality of the Englishmen and asserted that Denmark was the better team.

    Kasper Hjulmand’s side had 51% possession and had 7/16 attempts on target as compared to England’s 4/12.

    Shearer slammed the Harry Kane-captained English side for their performance.

    “You can see players lying on their backs – they look absolutely shattered, the England players. There’s no excuse for that,” he said on BBC.

    “There was no energy, no pace to the game. We didn’t run in behind until the last 10 or 15 minutes, we got caught too many times on the ball, and too many sloppy passes and in truth, Denmark was the better team and deserved to win.

    “It was very poor, it wasn’t good enough. I wouldn’t say lack of effort, not trying, but there’s so much more to come from those players.”

    Euro 2024: Evra knocks VAR officials for disallowing Netherlands goal against France

    Former French footballer, Patrice Evra, has hit out on Video Assistant Referee (VAR) officials for disallowing a good goal in Netherlands’ 0-0 draw with France in the ongoing Euro 2024 championship in Germany.

    According to Evra, Netherlands were denied a clear goal during the match.

    The ex-united defender said that the Video Assistant Referee, VAR officials, made a mistake when they canceled Xavi Simons’s goal in the second half for offside.

    Evra criticized the officials on Sony Sports Network’s Football Extraaa, saying the VAR’s decision was “shocking.”

    He joked that the legendary singer, Stevie Wonder was present at the VAR checking room during the match.

    “It’s a shocking decision, that should be a goal. Someone should tell me about this rule.

    “The Dutch player was not blocking Maignan’s view. Maybe the person sitting in the VAR room tonight was Stevie Wonder.

    “It’s a clear goal. As a Frenchman, I should be finding an excuse, but I can’t; it’s a goal,” Evra said.

    Euro 2024: Ukraine come from behind to beat Slovakia 2-1

    Ukraine on Friday night registered their first win of the ongoing Euro 2024 tournament in Germany after coming from behind to defeat Slovakia by 2-1.

    Goals from Mykola Shaparenko and Roman Yaremchuk secured Ukraine’s first win of Euro 2024 against Slovakia

    That winning goal is Roman Yaremchuk’s third at the European Championship, which makes him Ukraine’s all-time leading goalscorer in this competition.

     

    He has also become the only Ukraine player to score in two separate European Championships.

    Meanwhile, after putting up a yeoman’s job, Mykola Sheparenko was awarded UEFA’s Player of the Match award.

    Without the 25-year-old, Ukraine may well have been looking at elimination.

    The result means Ukraine join Slovakia and Romania on three points in Group E.

     

    Surprisingly, Belgium are lagging behind but they are strongly fancied to also chalk up three points in their game against Romania tomorrow.

     

    There is now a very real chance that the four teams will go into the final round of fixtures tied on the same amount of points

    Euro 2024: Roberto Baggio robbed at gunpoint

    Former world player of the year Roberto Baggio has been injured in a robbery at his home in northern Italy and had to be treated in hospital.

    According to Italian media reports, five armed men forced their way into the 57-year-old’s villa near Vicenza on Thursday while he was watching Italy’s 1-0 European Championship defeat to Spain on television with his family.

    One of the perpetrators is said to have hit Baggio with a rifle butt and injured him in the head as Baggio tried to defend himself.

    “Fortunately, the violence I suffered only caused me stitches, bruises, and a lot of fear.” he was reported as saying by the ANSA news agency on Friday.

    Baggio and his family were reportedly locked in a room.

    The thieves then ransacked the house and stole watches, jewellery, and money.

    After the criminals had left the villa, Baggio broke down the door and alerted the police.

    Nobody else was injured apart from the 1993 World Player of the Year and 1994 World Cup runner-up.

    Rafael van der Vaart  a former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has tipped Switzerland attacker, Xherdan Shaqiri’s wonder strike against Scotland as the best goal so far at the ongoing Euro 2024.

    Recall that Shaqiri recently scored a goal as Switzerland played a 1-1 draw against Scotland on Wednesday in Cologne.

    Switzerland had won their first 3-1 against Hungary before settling for a draw against Scotland.

    However, Van der Vaart picked Shaqiri’s brilliant left-footed curler as the best in the competition so far.

    The former Real Madrid star said (as per Madrid Xtra): “I think Shaqiri’s goal is the best goal of the EUROs so far.”
