Europa: Maguire’s dramatic winner sends Man Utd into semis

Manchester United are in the Europa League semi-finals after Harry Maguire’s late goal secured them a dramatic 5-4 win against Lyon in extra-time.

Manuel Ugarte and Diego Dalot gave United a 2-0 lead in the first half.

But the French side roared back with Nicolás Tagliafico and Corentin Tolisso to claim a 2-2 draw, the same scoreline from the first leg, and force extra-time.

Lyon started extra-time with 10 men after Tolisso was sent off in the 89th, but still managed to turn the game around through Rayan Cherki and Alexandre Lacazette.

United, however, didn’t give up. Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the spot and Kobbie Mainoo levelled the score – just a minute before Maguire’s header completed the fantastic victory.

The Premier League side will now face Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals.

In Rome, Europa League sensation Bodø/Glimt claimed a 3-2 win on penalties to oust Lazio and set up a semi-final tie against Tottenham.

Europa: Fernandes scores late as Man Utd beat Rangers

Bruno Fernandes marked his 50th Europa League appearance on Thursday with a stoppage-time winner as Manchester United snatched a 2-1 win over Rangers.

The win moves United  closer to the round of 16.

After Cyriel Dessers levelled in the 88th minute, Fernandes popped up with a crucial strike that will come as a huge relief to Ruben Amorim.

United had seen a first-half header from Matthijs De Ligt controversially ruled out but led through a bizarre own goal from their former back-up goalkeeper Jack Butland.

The win moves United up to fourth in the standings, two clear of the cut off for the top eight places.

But Rangers, who at least scored against United for the first time in five meetings, dropped to 13th, with the play-offs looming large.

Europa: Son leads Tottenham to victory at Hoffenheim

Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min scored in each half to earn his side a 3-2 victory at Hoffenheim in the Europa League on Thursday.

The win strengthened Tottenham’s chances of finishing in the top eight of the league, as they sit fourth with 14 points ahead of the final round of matches.

Spurs midfielder James Maddison opened the scoring in the third minute with a deft finish from a long pass and Son doubled the lead after 22 minutes.

Hoffenheim gradually worked their way back into the match, with Andrej Kramaric going close when his header struck the top of the crossbar.

The German side were awarded a penalty just after the hour mark when Spurs keeper Brandon Austin received a yellow card for colliding with a Hoffenheim player. The referee checked VAR, however, and rescinded both the card and the penalty.

The hosts’ efforts paid off in the 68th minute when Anton Stach connected with a cross from a counter-attack and slid the ball home.

Son restored Spurs’ two-goal lead with a low shot from an acute angle in the 77th minute before Hoffenheim’s David Mokwa headed in a cross from Andrej Kramaric four minutes from time to give his side hope.

In other games, a late goal from Troy Parrott gave AZ Alkmaar an important 1-0 home win over AS Roma and Olympiacos earned a 1-0 victory at Porto thanks to a late goal from Ayoub El Kaabi.

Fenerbahce and Olympique Lyonnais played out an intense goalless draw in Istanbul, leaving the French side in a strong position before the final round in third place in the group with 14 points.

Europa Final: Ademola Lookman makes history with first career hat trick

Atalanta forward, Ademola Lookman, has made history by being the first African footballer to score more than two goals in the final of a major UEFA competition.

The Nigerian opened the scoring inside 12th minute of the encounter by latching on to a loose inside Bayern’s box 18 to slot in Le Dea first of the night.

He wriggled through Bayern defender before sending a sublime curling effort into the bottom corner for his second of the night in the 26th minute of the the thrilling night.

It was Lookman’s first career hat trick and it came in the final of the Europa League against an unbeaten side that had played 51 games unbeaten

Europa League: Here’s how Atalanta rode to victory

Here’s how Atalanta rode to Europa League victory in Dublin. Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman grabbed a hat-trick to end Leverkusen’s 49 unbeaten record.

Group Stage: Winner of Group D

Atalanta were drawn in group D alonside, Portuguese giants Sporting, Austrian minnows Sturm Graz, and Polish outfit Raków Częstochowa.

In these six matches, La Dea scored 12 goals and conceded just 4 goals thus recording an +8 goal difference.

They topped the group with 14 points by winning four matches and drawing two others. Only Sturm Graz and Sporting managed to draw them away from home.

    Round of 16

It was advantageous for Altanta to not participate in the round of 32 because a change in format prevented them from participating. The winner of the group stage gets a direct entry into the round of 16.

Gasperini’s team fought hard away from Sporting in the first leg to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw, giving them the chance in the second leg to beat them 2-1 thanks to Lookman and Scamacca to secure a 2-1 win, securing their place in the quarter-final with a aggregate score of 3-2.

    Quarter-Finals- Atalanta stunned Liverpool 3-0

While Liverpool were hot favourites, the Italian underdogs knew that they have all the tools to break their unbeaten record at Anfield. Atalanta demolished the Reds at home to secure a 3-0 win so that half of the tie was in their hands.

As a result of Gasperini’s mastermind in Anfield, Klopp and Co were stunned by the outcome. In the second leg, Liverpool took control after Salah scored a penalty within 7 minutes. While Atalanta lost the match by 0-1 overall, they progressed 3-1 on aggregate by preventing their opponents from scoring further goals.

Semi-Final:  Atalanta defeated Marseille 5-2 on Aggregate

A tricky first leg in the Orange Vélodrome saw Atalanta open the scoring through Scamacca in the opening 11th minute but they could not resist the lead as Mbemba levelled the score at the break. Both sides did not take the risk in the second half, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

Atalanta completely outclassed Marseille in the final leg to win the tie 4-1 on aggregate, marking their first appearance since 1963 that the italian side have reached a Europa League final.

Final: Atalanta defeated Bayern Leverkusen 3-0 to emerge Champions

Atalanta were faced with a difficult task of facing a Bayern Leverkusen side that have been unbeaten in 49 games in all competitions.

But Le Dea didnt show any form intimidation in Dublin as they showed class from the blast of the whistle till the very end.

Gasperini’s team fought hard from start to finish in what ended Leverkusen’s unbeaten run. Nigerian forward, Ademola Lookman scored in the 12th, 26th and 75th minute of the encounter to bag a hattrick and man of the match.

Prior to the Europa final, Atalanta had previously lost the Coppa Italia final 2-1 to Juventus but have now made up for the loss in a much bigger final  against Leverkusen in Dublin.

The result meant that Atalanta will feature in the UEFA Champions League next season.

  • Europa Final: Unbeaten Leverkusen to clash with Atalanta in Dublin today

Europa Final: Unbeaten Leverkusen to clash with Atalanta in Dublin today

German champions, Bayern Leverkusen  could equal club 119- year record of winning two trophies if they triumph against Italian side, Atalanta in the Europa League final today in Dublin.

Leverkusen had won only two major trophies in their 119-year history before nicking the German Bundesliga title  this season unbeaten all season.

The newly-crowned Bundesliga champions have the chance to claim three titles this season and  beat the club’s all time record if they also win the German Cup this weekend.

Leverkusen broke Bayern Munich’s 11-year monopoly of the title in Germany this term as Xabi Alonso’s side became the first team in the Bundesliga’s 61-year history to complete the season unbeaten. They have also reached the German Cup final.

Their undefeated run in all competitions this term has earned them the nickname Bayer ‘Neverlusen’ and Serie A side Atalanta will have their work cut out trying to beat a team that have not lost in a European record 51 matches since August.

Several sides have come close to handing Leverkusen their first defeat of the season but, with 17 goals scored in or after the 90th minute, they do not give up until the final whistle.

“We have been competitive in every game, whether we were playing well or poorly. We played well for the majority of the games, but we didn’t give up in the ones where we didn’t play well,” Alonso said in an interview with Uefa.

“That says a lot about the commitment of this team when it comes to preparing for every game. We didn’t take any game for granted.”

Much like Alonso, coach Gian Piero Gasperini has changed Atalanta’s fortunes, making the Bergamo-based outfit an ever-present club in European competition since his arrival in 2016.

Atalanta play an enjoyable attacking style with high intensity and managers like Pep Guardiola and Maurizio Sarri have likened facing Gasperini’s teams to “going to the dentist”.

“Even if you come out unscathed, you still feel the pain,” Sarri once said.

    Atalanta

Like Leverkusen, Atalanta will also play in the Champions League next season after clinching a top-five finish but they will hope to end the season with their first major trophy in 61 years after losing to Juventus in the Coppa Italia final.

Just like Alonso, the match in Dublin will also be Gasperini’s first European final.

“It’s a great achievement and source of satisfaction, achieved with a really good season from this whole team,” the 66-year-old Italian said.

“Is it the highest point of my career? Yes, in terms of accomplishment and prestige, absolutely. In terms of gratification, fortunately I’ve had quite a few, although perhaps not on the same level.”

While Alonso has a full squad at his disposal, Atalanta will be missing key starters such as midfielder Marten de Roon and defender Sead Kolasinac while right back Emil Holm is a doubt.

Leverkusen will aim to repeat their 1988 Uefa Cup success and victory could set them up for a rare treble as they face second-tier side Kaiserslautern in the DFB-Pokal final, with Alonso saying such an achievement would be ‘historic’.

“It would be something written in golden letters, not only in the history of our club but probably all European football,” he added. “I hope we can.”

  • Europa: Liverpool crash out despite beating Atalanta 1-0, Leverkusen’s unbeaten run intact after playing 1-1 with West Ham

Europa: Liverpool crash out despite beating Atalanta 1-0, Leverkusen’s unbeaten run intact after playing 1-1 with West Ham

The hopes of Liverpool  winning a continental title this season yesterday came to an end as the Reds beat Atalanta 1-0 but lost 3-1 on aggregate to exit the Europa League.

Liverpool surprisingly lost 3-0 to Atalanta in the first leg at Anfield  and they were given hope as Mohamed Salah slammed home an early penalty inside the first ten minutes to make it 1-0 on the night.

Luis Diaz then saw an effort smothered and Salah missed a one-on-one as Jurgen Klopp’s men ended the first 45 minutes strongly.

However, in the second half, Liverpool offered very little, and it was the hosts who had the better chances.

As the game progressed Klopp threw Diogo Jota, Drawin Nunez and Harvey Elliott on, but the belief drained with each passing minute as the Liverpool manager’s European reign at Anfield came to an end in an unflattering manner.

Meanwhile, another English side, West Ham got knocked out of the Europa League as Jeremie Frimpong’s late leveller denied them the consolation of becoming the first team to beat new German champions Bayer Leverkusen this season.

Michaiil Antonio had given the host the lead inside 13th minute with a powerful header at London Stadium gave David Moyes’ side the perfect start in their attempts to overturn a two-goal deficit from the first leg.

But despite dominating the opening period they were unable to prize open the Leverkusen defence a second time.

Jarrod Bowen came closest when his far-post effort was saved by Matej Kovar but Xabi Alonso’s side improved significantly after the break.

Frimpong blazed over after running clear of the defence, but made amends in the 89th minute with a shot that took a significant deflection off Aaron Cresswell and flew past Lukasz Fabianski.

The goal preserved Leverkusen’s incredible unbeaten record since a 3-0 reverse at Bochum on 27 May last year, 328 days ago, and booked a last-four meeting with Brighton’s conquerors Roma, who knocked out AC Milan.

With the exit of Liverpool and West Ham only Aston Villa remain on the continent as they qualified over Lille of France on Thursday.
