Man City strike twice late on to beat Everton

Manchester City remain on track to qualify for next season’s Champions League after winning at Everton with two late goals.

An uninspiring contest looked to be heading for a drab draw before being brought to life with six minutes remaining when young full-back Nico O’Reilly stole in from close range to convert Matheus Nunes’ cutback.

Substitute Mateo Kovacic added a second in injury time on the stretch as Pep Guardiola’s men climbed to fourth in the table, four points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea, who face neighbours Fulham on Sunday.

The first half was often flat and made for a poor spectacle, with Everton’s best chance going the way of centre-back James Tarkowski, who rose highest to James Garner’s corner and flicked a header against the post.

On the stroke of half-time, City could have gone ahead with a rapid break forward but Kevin de Bruyne saw his goalbound strike brilliantly cleared off the line by Jake O’Brien’s diving header.

Savinho’s low drive was kept out by Jordan Pickford’s sharp save in the second period, before City had the final say.

Everton late win to dent Forest Champions League hopes

Abdoulaye Doucoure scored a dramatic 94th-minute winner as Everton dealt Nottingham Forest’s Champions League hopes a huge blow with victory at the City Ground.

Forest were unable to find a breakthrough and the contest looked to be heading for a goalless draw, but the Blues had other ideas as substitute Dwight McNeil laid a pass through to Doucoure to coolly slot home a late winner.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side have delivered a remarkable campaign by climbing to third in the Premier League, but victories for Manchester City and Aston Villa on Saturday moved them into the top five, leaving Forest looking on nervously.

In scorching conditions, the first half was a slow burner with the two sides calling both goalkeepers into making comfortable saves.

James Garner’s low shot and Iliman Ndiaye’s header were kept out by home keeper Matz Sels while at the other end, Jota Silva’s strike on the turn and tame nodded effort were straight at Jordan Pickford.

The sprightly Callum Hudson-Odoi looked to create some magic on the break in the second period but could not get enough curl onto a shot after cutting inside, as his attempt smothered by Pickford.

With time running out, Everton snatched a stunning win on the counter-attack to climb up to 14th and leave Forest shellshocked.

EPL: Arteta slams controversial Arsenal penalty decision

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has said there was ‘no way’ Everton should have been awarded a penalty in their 1-1 Premier League draw on Saturday.

Referee Darren England awarded the home side a penalty after Myles Lewis-Skelly had a coming together with Everton winger Jack Harrison in the Arsenal box.

Iliman Ndiaye stepped up and slotted past David Raya to level the score and further dent Arsenal’s fading Premier League title hopes.

Arteta was left furious with the decision, saying there is ‘no way’ Lewis-Skelly’s challenge was worthy of conceding a penalty.

Speaking to the press after the game, Arteta said: “The referee decides to give a penalty that changes the course of the game.

“I’m here to give my opinion and, after seeing it 15 times, there is no way in my opinion that is a penalty because if it is then (Jake) O’Brien has to be out, and Everton have to play with 10 men. That’s clear.”

EPL: Arteta defends Arsenal selection after Everton draw

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta defended his team selection after Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Everton.

Leandro Trossard had the Gunners ahead before a penalty won by  Jack Harrison after being fouled by Myles Lewis-Skelly was converted by Iliman Ndiaye.

Afterwards, Arteta defended his team selection, denying he was rotating given their Champions League quarterfinal first-leg clash with Real Madrid next week.

He said, “Everybody has to be important, has to fill in.

“Not for what was happening on Tuesday, but what happened in training they deserved to start the game.”

On the performance of Bukayo Saka, Arteta continued: “He is in a much better place. He has played 49 minutes today. He’s in a much better place.

“Today we have players who have not played together. Let them have the minutes, have the understanding and we will assess who is the best combination for the game.”

The match marked the last for former Everton captain Arteta at Goodison Park: “Well, I mean the Premier League has got a reputation all over the world for places like Goodison Park. I understand this is evolution of a football club.”

On facing Real Madrid, he said: “One of the most beautiful games that you can play in football. Against a team that has dominated the competition for the next 25 years.”

  • FA Cup: Everton secures win after Sean Dyche sacking

FA Cup: Everton secures win after Sean Dyche sacking

Everton avoided FA Cup embarrassment with a 2-0 victory against third-tier Peterborough just hours after Sean Dyche was sacked by the struggling Premier League club on Thursday.

Dyche was axed less than four hours before the third-round tie, with the club’s new owners, the Friedkin Group, reportedly in talks with former Everton boss David Moyes about a return to Goodison Park.

Moyes is the bookmakers’ favourite for the job of saving Everton from relegation, 12 years after he left for Manchester United.

The Scot, who managed Everton in a successful spell between 2002 and 2013, has been out of work since leaving West Ham at the end of last season.

The Toffees are once again battling to avoid relegation after winning just one of their past 11 games, with that sole success coming against lowly Wolves in December.

Dyche was at the Everton training ground earlier on Thursday to say his goodbyes after the axe fell, while the matchday programme for the Peterborough game still contained his column.

Former Everton defender Leighton Baines, now the club’s under-18s coach, and captain Seamus Coleman took charge against Peterborough, using the starting lineup selected by Dyche before his dismissal.

Peterborough’s Cian Hayes’ was inches away from giving them a shock first-half lead when his low drive was cleared off the line by Jarrad Branthwaite.

But Beto finally lifted the mood among Everton’s subdued fans in the 42nd minute as he took Harrison Armstrong’s pass inside the area, rounded Peterborough keeper Nicholas Bilokapic and slotted into the empty net.

In a blow to Everton, on-loan Chelsea striker Armando Broja needed oxygen before being stretchered off with his right ankle heavily strapped.

There was no family affair for Everton defender Ashley Young, who came off the bench in the closing minutes, while his teenage son Tyler, who plays for Peterborough, remained an unused substitute.

But Branthwaite was fouled by Jadel Katongo in stoppage time and Iliman Ndiaye converted the penalty as Everton made a winning start to life without Dyche.

  • Finally, struggling Everton fires manager, Dyche

Finally, struggling Everton fires manager, Dyche

Struggling Everton fired manager Sean Dyche on Thursday, just hours before their FA Cup third-round tie against Peterborough.

Speculation about Dyche’s future had intensified with reports suggesting Everton’s new owners, the US-based Friedkin Group, had been talking to potential successors after completing a takeover of the Liverpool club.

Everton said in a statement that Dyche had been “relieved of his duties as senior men’s first-team manager with immediate effect” and the process to appoint a new boss was under way.

The Toffees are once again battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League after winning just one of their past 11 games, with that sole success coming against fellow strugglers Wolves in December.

The club’s under-18s head coach Leighton Baines and captain Seamus Coleman will take charge on an interim basis while Everton’s new owners search for a permanent replacement for Dyche.

Former Manchester United and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho, currently in charge of Turkish club Fenerbahce, has recently been linked with Everton.

David Moyes, who managed Everton between 2002 and 2013, ex-England coach Gareth Southgate, Brentford boss Thomas Frank and Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola are also among the reported contenders.

Everton have won only three times in 19 league matches this season and are languishing in 16th place, with only one point separating them from the relegation zone.

Asked earlier this week if the club were considering his position, Dyche’s answer suggested he knew the sack could be looming.

To be clear, it should be,” the former Burnley boss said.

“At the end of the day, if you’re a business of this size, succession planning should surely be part of their diligence. I’ve got no problem with that at all.”

Dyche took charge at Everton in January 2023 and kept them in the top-flight despite numerous issues, including last season’s points deduction for breaching Premier League rules on profit and sustainability.

They finished 17th in Dyche’s first season and came 15th last term, extending their streak of being ever-present in the top-flight since 1954.

EPL: City bounce back, Palace sideline Saints as Forest beat Everton

On Sunday in the Premier League saw Manchester City bounce back with a win against Leicester, while Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, and Wolves secured valuable results in their respective matches.

    Leicester City 0–2 Manchester City

Manchester City bounced back from their poor form with a comfortable 2-0 win over Leicester City. Goals from Savinho and Erling Haaland secured the victory, keeping Pep Guardiola’s men’s hope alive in the hunt for the league title.

Crystal Palace edged Southampton in a thrilling encounter at Selhurst Park. The Eagles managed to hold off the Saints to claim all three points.

Nottingham Forest defeated Everton with a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park. The Toffees failed to capitalise on home advantage as Forest delivered a clinical performance to claim a crucial away win. This victory sends them to second place on the table, pending the results from other games.

    Fulham 2–2 Bournemouth

Fulham and Bournemouth shared the spoils in a high-scoring 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage. Both teams had opportunities to seal the win, but neither could find a decisive goal.

    Tottenham Hotspur 2–2 Wolves

Meanwhile, Liverpool will face West Ham later in the day to continue their charge for the title.

  • Haaland misses penalty as Manchester City’s woes continue

Haaland misses penalty as Manchester City’s woes continue

Erling Haaland missed a penalty as Manchester City’s torrid run continued with a frustrating 1-1 draw against Everton at the Etihad Stadium.

The ailing champions at least avoided a 10th defeat in 13 outings in all competitions but their troubles were hardly eased as they were pegged back by the battling Toffees on Boxing Day.

Haaland squandered the chance to get them back to winning ways in the Premier League when his second-half spot-kick was saved by England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

City had led early in the game through Bernardo Silva but Iliman Ndiaye levelled before the break.

It was another creditable result for manager Sean Dyche’s side after stalemates against Arsenal and Chelsea in their previous two outings.

Yet for City boss Pep Guardiola the questions continue, although injuries were once again a major factor.

Already without the services of Rodri, Ederson and Ruben Dias, John Stones, Jack Grealish and Kyle Walker were added to the list of absentees since the weekend.

That left the out-of-form Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan as the senior stars on an inexperienced bench that featured four teenagers and a 20-year-old.
