EPL: Sheffield United secure surprise win at Everton

Yerry Mina’s first half own goal and a late Lys Mousset effort gave Sheffield United a smash-and-grab 2-0 win at Everton in an entertaining English Premier League match on Saturday.

The result lifted the Blades to eighth place on eight points from six games while Everton slipped to 14th on seven points after they failed to convert several chances at Goodison Park.

Colombia defender Mina put the ball past his own goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in the 40th minute after the first purposeful move by the visitors resulted in a corner kick.

Everton dominated the opening half and their Brazilian forward Richarlison curled a fine shot inches wide before visiting goalkeeper Dean Henderson kept out a stinging low drive by Lucas Digne.

Everton pressed after the break in search of an equaliser but were caught cold again in the 79th minute.

This was after Mousset latched on to a defence-splitting pass and beat Pickford with a clinical finish to delight the away fans.

Sheffield United held out comfortably in the last 10 minutes as Everton manager deployed Theo Walcott in a desperate attempt to salvage something from a disappointing performance.

Everton’s Mina fined by FA for breaching betting rules

Everton defender Yerry Mina has been fined 10,000 pounds ($12,300) and warned by the English Football Association for breaching betting regulations, the FA said on Tuesday.

The centre back appeared in a video promoting the betting company Betjuego in his native Colombia. Players, coaches and officials are prohibited from advertising or promoting any betting activity related to football.

The FA said in a statement that the player had admitted to a misconduct charge.

After a debut Premier League season blighted by injuries following his move from Barcelona, Mina has played all four league games in the new campaign and helped the Merseyside club keep two clean sheets.

Everton, sixth in the standings, travel to Bournemouth on Sunday.

  • Transfer: Everton's Gueye set for PSG medical

Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye is set to have a medical with Paris St-Germain as the Senegal international nears a move to the French champions.

The 29-year-old joined Everton from Aston Villa for around £7m in 2016 and is reported to be set to leave for a fee of over £25m.
Gueye has made 108 appearances for the Toffees in all competitions.
He was pictured in Paris on Sunday and is expected to have a medical on Monday.
He would be the second high-profile exit from Goodison Park in a week following the sale of winger Ademola Lookman to RB Leipzig.
Manager Marco Silva has signed midfielders Andre Gomes and Fabian Delph, as well as goalkeeper Jonas Lossl, but has said he hopes to recruit in another five positions before the transfer deadline on 8 August.

  • Transfer: Ademola Lookman completes RB Leipzig move

RB Leipzig have completed the signing of Everton and England Under-21 forward Ademola Lookman in a deal worth £22.5m.

The Bundesliga club had to improve on their original offer to sign the 21-year-old on a five-year deal.
Lookman enjoyed a successful loan spell with the German side in the second half of the 2017-18 season, scoring five goals in 11 league games.
Leipzig were prepared to pay in excess of £20m for the winger last summer but were told he was not for sale.
Lookman has made 48 appearances for Everton since joining from Charlton in January 2017, but missed out on the European Under-21 Championship with England this summer.

  • Transfer: Everton sign Delph from Man City

Everton have signed midfielder Fabian Delph from Manchester City on a three-year deal.

The 29-year-old, who had one year left on his contract at the Etihad Stadium, joins for a fee worth up to £10m.
The midfielder has linked up with Marco Silva’s squad on their training camp in Switzerland.
The former Aston Villa player, who has made 20 appearances for England, was part of the squad at the World Cup and the recent Uefa Nations League Finals.
Delph played 22 times in City’s Premier League-winning season of 2017/18, but his chances of regular football under Pep Guardiola have decreased with the arrival of £60m club record signing Rodri from Atletico Madrid.
“The club that I’ve been at has had success, especially in the last two seasons, but over the last four years we managed to win trophies,” he told Everton’s website.
“I wanted to be playing more regularly and the opportunity to come and play for Everton was too good of an opportunity to turn down.”
Everton, who finished eighth in the Premier League last season, brought in Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes earlier in July and boss Silva says Delph will add to the squad on and off the pitch.
“When I look to bring a new player into our squad, the first thing I look for above all the other things is quality and Fabian is a player with high quality,” said Silva.
“But what they can bring to our dressing room is also important and if you can put those two things together then that can only be good for the club.”

  • Matic admits he was United’s biggest problem in defeat at Everton

Matic admits he was United’s biggest problem in defeat at Everton

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic says he was United’s “biggest problem” during their 4-0 league defeat at Everton on Super Sunday.

The humbling at Goodison Park consigned United to their sixth defeat in eight matches, prompting manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to apologise to the club’s supporters at full-time.

Solskjaer also warned his under-performing players that some of them could be sold in the summer as he looks to reshape the United squad.

When asked about the performance against Everton, midfielder Matic told Danish broadcasters TV2: “Many things didn’t work for us today. First of all, our approach.

“I think that the most experienced guys, in this case me, didn’t play well today. So I don’t think we need to blame the young guys today. I was the biggest problem.

“In these kinds of games, you have to win the battle in the middle, then the team can play better football. We didn’t do that.”

Matic says the United squad have already spoken about how they can bounce back against their neighbours, who will return to the top of the Premier League with a victory.

“We had one small meeting,” Matic added. “We will try to do better in the next few days. We have a big game against Manchester City, so we will see if we’re ready.

“We’ll keep it behind the doors, but I think it was a good meeting.”

  • EPL: Fulham beat Everton to end nine-game losing run

EPL: Fulham beat Everton to end nine-game losing run

Tom Cairney and Ryan Babel scored as relegated Fulham beat Everton for their first Premier League win since January.

Cairney stroked home Babel’s pass from just inside the area for his first goal of the season, 30 seconds into the second half.

Babel then ran on to Aleksandar Mitrovic’s pass to double Fulham’s lead and seal their first victory under caretaker boss Scott Parker.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin had Everton’s best chance but his clipped effort hit the outside of the post, as the Toffees’ three-game winning run came to an end.

It was a deserved victory for Fulham, who kept just their third clean sheet of the season and first since December.

Mitrovic was a constant threat and had the best chance of a quiet first half, but his shot from inside the area hit the top of the bar.

Everton offered little in reply, with Bernard’s tame first-half effort their only shot on target.

The defeat means Marco Silva’s side stay ninth and miss the chance to move above Watford and Wolves into seventh.

  • EPL: I’ve justified leaving Everton – Barkley

Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley believes his form this season and return to prominence on the international stage has justified his decision to leave Everton.

Barkley departed Everton in January last year in a transfer that led to criticism from supporters of his boyhood club and neutrals, who questioned whether he would be given the opportunity to continue his development at Stamford Bridge.

However, Barkley has featured regularly for both club and country this season and scored his first international goals since 2015 as England thrashed Montenegro on Monday night.

“Yes, exactly,” Barkley responded when asked if he needed the move.

“I am away from my family and down in London by myself. I am in a totally different environment from Liverpool. I miss being with my family, it is totally different. It is how I am maturing as a person and a player. It is good.”

“Since I made the move it was good to challenge myself and win trophies and to improve as a player. I’ve changed compared to when I was 18, 19 or 20. My diet is much better. My approach to games is much better and I am going into them with the right preparation and I am more relaxed, rather than think about things too much.”

  • Man City defeat Everton to sit top of Premier League

Champions Manchester City returned to the top of the Premier League for the first time since 16 December after edging to victory over Everton at Goodison Park.

The win means Pep Guardiola’s side take full advantage after Liverpool only managed a draw at West Ham on Monday, moving ahead of the Reds on goal difference albeit having played one game more.

Defender Aymeric Laporte met David Silva’s free-kick to head home his fourth goal of the season, putting City in front just before half-time.

Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling both spurned decent opportunities to extend City’s lead after the break before Gabriel Jesus sealed victory in stoppage time.

It was far from a vintage display by City, who instead had to show their battling qualities to secure the points and regain the initiative in the title race.

Attention will now switch back to Liverpool, who can return to the summit with victory against Bournemouth on Saturday, 24 hours before City host Chelsea at Etihad Stadium.

Everton stay ninth after suffering a fourth defeat in five Premier League games at Goodison Park, though they should take some encouragement from a resilient display that was a notable improvement on their performances in recent weeks.
