EPL: Everton edge to hard-fought win over Bournemouth

Two second-half goals gave Everton a victory over Bournemouth that lifted them into the top half of the Premier League table.

Kurt Zouma powerfully headed in his first goal for the club from Lucas Digne’s cross following a corner in the 61st minute, before Dominic Calvert-Lewin added the second in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Everton had been outplayed in the opening 30 minutes but Bournemouth failed to capitalise on their bright start.

David Brooks hit the post when through one-on-one with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and had a strong penalty appeal turned down early on, while Joshua King also had a good chance saved.

Everton, who had not won any of their previous four home league matches, failed to have a first-half shot on target for the second successive league game at Goodison Park.

They improved after the break, with Richarlison having a shot cleared off the line by Nathan Ake and coming close with a header from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s cross.

While Everton climb to 10th, Bournemouth stay 12th despite now having lost six league away games in a row.

  • EPL: Vardy strike gives Leicester win at Everton

EPL: Vardy strike gives Leicester win at Everton

Jamie Vardy’s 58th minute strike gave Leicester City a 1-0 win at Everton on Tuesday and condemned the Merseysiders to their fourth defeat in five English Premier League games.

Leicester boss Claude Puel made four changes from the team which lost to Cardiff City on Saturday, including leaving midfielder James Maddison on the bench.

Also, Marco Silva recalled Brazilian Richarlison to his starting line-up.

After a poor first half, the decisive goal came when Everton defender Michael Keane mis-controlled the ball to Ricardo Pereira, who sent Vardy through.

The striker made no mistake with a low drive past Jordan Pickford, before celebrating with a cartwheel in front of the travelling Foxes’ fans.

Gylfi Sigurdsson blasted over from a promising position for Everton, but Leicester should have doubled their lead when Harry Maguire somehow missed the target from point-blank range.

Everton, with just one win from their last eight games, have now failed to win in their last four home matches.

The win moves Leicester up into seventh place, on 31 points, four behind Manchester United.

Everton manager Silva was frank in his assessment of his team’s performance.

“A disappointing result, poor performance to be honest. In this moment we have to be honest and look clear at the game.

“Poor performance since the first minute. We knew what they came here to do, playing a 4-5-1 and waiting for our mistake,” said the Portuguese who accepted his players looked nervous.

“When you play so anxious you make easy mistakes like the one we conceded. There is no reason they are under the normal pressure we’ll find the reason for that,” Silva added.

Puel was delighted with the way his team carried out his gameplan.

“The organisation of the team was perfect and I am happy for the players because we lost our last game at home to Cardiff and it was not a fair result,” the Frenchman said.

“We said after that game we wanted to take three points away. It was a difficult challenge of course, but the team showed character.

“We know all the players are tired like us, but the most important thing was to show our strength in this moment. We needed to have a different adaptation for this game.

“In this situation it is not just the quality, but the physical makes a difference. We needed to find the right situation to move.”

Chelsea must fix problem after draw with Everton – Sarri

Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri says his side need to “sort out the problem” of how they “approach” games after they were held to a scrappy goalless draw by Everton.

Sarri’s Blues had the better chances at Stamford Bridge but missed the opportunity to briefly return to the top of the Premier League.

“I think we have to sort out the problem of the approach of the match,” said Sarri. “Because in the last two or three matches we haven’t been approaching the games right.

“At the beginning we moved the ball too slowly, so it is easy for the opposition to defend and impossible for us to be dangerous.”

However, the result means Chelsea have now stayed unbeaten in their opening 12 top-flight games for only the second time in their history.

It also secured a small piece of history for Sarri himself, who has become the first Premier League manager to avoid defeat in their first dozen games.

  • Everton defender Keane suffers fractured skull

Everton defender Michael Keane suffered a hairline fracture of his skull during Saturday’s draw at Bournemouth.

The England centre-back clashed heads with team-mate Idrissa Gueye in injury time and was taken to hospital after six minutes of treatment on the pitch.

“Michael Keane has sustained a small hairline fracture of the skull but suffered no other complications,” said an Everton statement.

Keane, 25, said he must avoid head contact for three to four weeks.

The defender had earlier scored to put the Toffees 2-0 up in their Premier League match at the Vitality Stadium, before the Cherries fought back to earn a point.

“I will be back with my team and back on the pitch as soon as I can,” Keane posted on social media on Sunday.

“I’m OK but suffered a small hairline fracture of the skull, which will heal itself.”

  • Transfer news: Everton sign France defender Digne from Barcelona

Transfer news: Everton sign France defender Digne from Barcelona

Everton have announced the signing of left-back Lucas Digne from Barcelona on a five-year deal for £18m.

The 25-year-old joined Barca from Paris St-Germain in 2016, and won La Liga and Ligue 1 titles with his former clubs.

He has 21 international caps for France and was on standby for the World Cup winners earlier this summer.

“Everton is a big club with a great history. I want to play games, win games and excite the fans with the quality of our football,” Digne said.

“I want to show my best football here and discover the best league in the world. Everybody loves the Premier League. I am loving the fact I am coming here.

“I am not afraid, I am excited. For me, it is a new challenge to discover a country, a league, people and a great club such as Everton. It is fabulous.”

Digne – who also spent a year on loan at Roma – made 46 appearances for Barcelona.

He bid farewell to the Catalan giants in an Instagram post on Sunday in which he thanked the staff for making the club “a family”.

Digne is new manager Marco Silva’s second major signing this summer following the arrival of Brazilian Richarlison from Watford.

  • Former Watford boss Silva appointed as new Everton manager

Everton have appointed former Watford and Hull City boss Marco Silva as their new manager on a three-year deal.

The 40-year-old replaces Sam Allardyce, who was sacked at the end of the season after six months in charge.

Silva was sacked by Watford in January, with the Hornets blaming the decision on Everton’s approach for the Portuguese in November.

“I know what our fans expect. I want our fans to be proud when they see our team on the pitch,” Silva said.

“I’m excited and I’m really happy to take this big challenge for us as a club and for me as a manager.

“I want to express my thanks to Farhad [Moshiri, owner], to the chairman, to the board and to Marcel [Brands, director of football] for the confidence in my work.

“I know the huge history of Everton as a club and what the fans expect. I’m sure with everybody working together I will be ready for this challenge.”

Silva will be joined by long-term assistant manager Joao Pedro, plus goalkeeping coach Hugo Olivera, technical scout Antonis Lemonakis and fitness coach Pedro Conceicao.

Everton have confirmed their former striker Duncan Ferguson will continue as part of the coaching team.

Everton’s major shareholder Farhad Moshiri said: “His abilities are underpinned by a strong footballing philosophy, a fierce work ethic and his enthusiasm in embracing Everton, our values and our ambitions has hugely impressed me, as I hope it will each and every Evertonian.”

Former Sporting Lisbon and Olympiakos boss Silva spent four months at Hull in 2017 but left after they were relegated from the Premier League.

Two days after leaving Hull he joined Watford in May 2017 and took the team into the top four during his first few months in charge.

But he was dismissed after a dismal run that saw them win just one of his last 11 Premier League games.

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri had pursued Silva since the club sacked Ronald Koeman in November.

The Hornets fiercely resisted the Toffees’ approach and complained to the Premier League with a demand for compensation.

Everton finished 13th in the Premier League under Allardyce, but his style of play was unpopular with fans and the club said the decision to sack the former England boss was part of their “longer-term plan”.

Silva guided Estoril into the Portuguese top flight and they qualified for the Europa League the following season.

In one season at Sporting he won the Portuguese Cup and then the Greek League title in his year at Olympiakos, who he also managed in the Champions League.

  • Everton sack Sam Allardyce as manager

Everton Football Club can confirm that Sam Allardyce has left his role as manager, the club said in a statement on its website “www.evertonfc.com” on Wednesday.

Denise Barrett-Baxendale, deputy chief officer of the club said: “On behalf of the Chairman, Board of Directors and Moshiri , I would like to thank Sam for the job he has done at Everton over the last seven months.

“Sam was brought in at a challenging time last season to provide us with some stability and we are grateful to him for doing that.

“However, we have made the decision that as part of our longer-term plan, we will be appointing a new manager this summer and will be commencing this process immediately.

“Again, we would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Sam for his work with us over the last few months and wish him well for the future,” the statement said.

Everton ended the season 8th on the Premier League log.

  • Wayne Rooney set to leave Everton

Wayne Rooney looks set to play his last game in the Premier League this Sunday – with a £12m move to MLS side DC United agreed in principle.

A number of MLS franchises held talks with Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford more than a year ago before England’s top goalscorer returned to Goodison Park.

Sky Sports News understands this latest deal was drafted over the past seven weeks, during several visits to the States by Stretford alongside DC United’s Chief Executive Jason Levein.

The agreement, which runs to the end of the MLS season in 2020, is yet to be signed, but SSN understands it would take a significant change of heart by Rooney and his family to stop the transfer going ahead.

Levein, who is also the co-owner of Swansea City, hopes Rooney can become the club’s marquee signing ahead of a move on July 14, to their brand new Audi Field stadium, in the heart of the capital.

Moving stadia has meant that all but two of DC United’s matches this campaign have been played away from home and they remain bottom of the MLS table with just one win from seven games.

Rooney’s salary would make him the highest-paid player in the DC organisation. The club has one of the smallest payrolls in the MLS but, with the revenue from a new stadium expected to increase, the club is looking to invest in talent.

DC United are due to play their next seven games away from home before they welcome Vancouver to Audi Field on July 15. After that, 14 of their next 19 games will be at their new home.

Rooney’s proposed move is likely to be confirmed on July 10, when the MLS ‘secondary’ (or mid-season) transfer window opens.

Before then, Rooney looks set to take his Premier League curtain-call on Sunday at West Ham’s London Stadium.

  • Man City one win from title after defeating Everton

Man City one win from title after defeating Everton

Manchester City will win the Premier League if they beat arch-rivals Manchester United in the derby at Etihad Stadium next Saturday after the easiest of victories at Everton.

Manager Pep Guardiola had failed to record a victory against Everton in three matches before this visit to Goodison Park, but this result was never in doubt from the moment Leroy Sane volleyed home David Silva’s cross after four minutes.

Everton barely mounted even token resistance and City had effectively restored their 16-point advantage at the top of the table by half-time after Gabriel Jesus headed in Kevin de Bruyne’s cross and Raheem Sterling applied a simple finish to another Silva delivery.

Yannick Bolasie pulled a goal back for Everton after the break when he fired in via a post from 20 yards but this was a minor interruption to City’s serene progress and they now have the opportunity to reclaim the title in circumstances they will relish when Jose Mourinho brings his Manchester United side to Etihad Stadium.
