I wanted the ‘pressure’, reason for everton return – Rooney

Wayne Rooney chose to return to Everton rather than move to a country such as China because he wanted the “pressure” of being back at his boyhood club.

The former Manchester United striker rejoined the Toffees on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee last summer.

The 32-year-old says he had options to move abroad on a big-money contract.

“That’s not me, I need those goals, I need that pressure. That desire to play would have been lost if I’d chosen that other option,” he told Football Focus.

Speaking to former Everton team-mate Kevin Kilbane, Rooney said he could have decided to see out his career “earning a lot of money”.

But he chose to return to Goodison Park 13 years after leaving the Merseyside club.

“I knew that coming back to Everton was more pressure – that’s what I wanted. I wanted to prove myself again to the Everton fans and to try to help this club move forward and win silverware.

“I think it was the perfect fit for me and hopefully in the next two or three years we can do that.”

Rooney played 559 times for United, scoring 253 goals.

He won five Premier League titles and the Champions League, Europa League and FA Cup once each after joining from Everton for £27m in 2004.

  • OFFICIAL : Netherlands appoints Ronald Koeman as new manager

Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman has been appointed as manager of the Netherlands.

Koeman, who has been out of work since being sacked by Everton in October, will take charge for the first time against England on 23 March.

He has signed a four-and-half-year contract up to and including the 2022 World Cup.

The 54-year-old replaces Dick Advocaat who resigned after failing to guide the Netherlands to the 2018 World Cup.

A legend with the Netherlands national team, Koeman was capped 78 times as a player and won the European Championship in 1988.

He was sacked by Everton with the team 18th in the Premier League, having won just two of their nine league games this season despite spending £140m last summer.

He guided Everton to seventh place in his first season in charge last term and also took Southampton to sixth and seventh in the Premier League in his two years in charge at St Mary’s.

The Netherlands were runners-up at the 2010 World Cup and finished third in 2014 in Brazil but failed to qualify for Euro 2016 and this summer’s World Cup.

  • Burnley agree deal to sign Everton winger,Aaron Lennon

Burnley have agreed a deal with Everton to sign winger Aaron Lennon for an undisclosed fee.The 30-year-old, who is surplus to requirements at Goodison Park following the arrival of Theo Walcott, still needs to have a medical, but personal terms have been agreed.

Lennon joined Everton from Tottenham in 2015 and has scored seven goals in 63 appearances.

The former England international has played 19 games this season.

The second half of the 2016-17 campaign was disrupted for Lennon after he was detained by police in May under the Mental Health Act over concerns for his welfare.

Speaking shortly after returning for pre-season training in July, he said he had received “incredible” support from “Everton, Spurs, their fans, football fans and concerned members of the general public”.

He has provided two assists in the 19 appearances he has made for the Toffees in all competitions this term.

  • Arsenal forward, Walcott set for medical in Everton

Arsenal forward, Walcott set for medical in Everton

Arsenal forward Theo Walcott is edging closer to a £20 million ($28 million, 23 million euros) move to Everton after he travelled to Merseyside for a medical as Toffees coach Sam Allardyce bids to boost his attacking options.

Britain’s Press Association reported that the 28-year-old was due to attend the club’s Finch Farm training ground on Tuesday to undergo his physical examination and finalise terms.

“His pace is one of his key strengths which we lack in this squad,” said Allardyce last week. “We are short of goals so to add power in our goalscoring ability would be very important for me.”

Walcott, who has scored 108 goals in 397 matches for Arsenal, is surplus to requirements at the Emirates Stadium having made just 16 appearances this season. He has not made a Premier League start since April.

Providing there are no last-minute hitches, within the next 24 hours Walcott, Arsenal’s longest-serving player, should become Allardyce’s second signing of the transfer window.

Striker Cenk Tosun, a £28 million arrival from Besiktas, made his debut at the weekend, playing an hour of the 4-0 defeat at Tottenham for mid-table Everton, whose progress under Allardyce has stalled after a promising start following his arrival in late November.

“Theo’s not as risky (as Tosun) because he’s proven,” added Allardyce. “He’s scored 100 goals for Arsenal from wide positions as well as many assists.”

  • Everton and Southampton want Arsenal winger,Theo Walcott

Everton and Southampton have held high-level talks with Arsenal about signing England forward Theo Walcott in a permanent transfer this month.

Several clubs have enquired about a loan deal for Walcott, 28, but Arsenal will only consider a sale – otherwise he will stay until the summer.

While not agitating to leave, the player is frustrated at a lack of games and is open to joining the Toffees or Saints to reignite his career.

    Walcott’s contract runs until 2019.

If he departs mid-season, he is not interested in a move to a foreign club.

Another Gunners forward who could leave this month is Alexis Sanchez, a target for Manchester City.

Arsenal are in no rush to sanction Walcott’s exit – they want to asses the condition of Olivier Giroud after a hamstring injury and fellow striker Danny Welbeck following a series of problems.

If Giroud and Welbeck prove their fitness and Arsenal suffer no other major setbacks, it is likely Walcott will leave 12 years after joining from Southampton.

Returning to his first professional team has always appealed to Walcott, though Everton’s ambition to challenge the established top six of Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham is also understood to be an attraction.

Walcott was selected by Toffees boss Sam Allardyce during his short spell as England manager and is thought to be enthusiastic about the idea of playing under him again.

Everton are also understood to be more likely than Southampton to pay the transfer fee being sought by the Gunners – reportedly about £20m – and Walcott’s £110,000-per-week salary.

Another factor in any decision could be Everton’s position in the Premier League – they are in ninth place, while Southampton are only one place above the relegation zone.

Walcott arrived at Arsenal in January 2006 – for £5m rising to about £12.5m – and has scored 108 goals in 396 appearances, with eight goals in 47 games for England.

Earlier on Thursday, Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino said: “We know Walcott is a very good player but now it is not my concern to talk about players not in the club.

“We have to be optimistic. We have a couple of targets and we are working hard in this way. The priority now is to try to help, especially in the final third.

“But the market is really difficult. It’s about negotiations – we can control our side but not the other side.”

However, he has only made five Premier League appearances for Everton this season, three of them as a substitute.

Mirallas helped Olympiakos win the Greek title in 2011 and 2012 with 34 goals in 71 games in his first spell.

  • Chelsea to sign Everton midfielder, Ross Barkley for £15m

Chelsea to sign Everton midfielder, Ross Barkley for £15m

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley is expected to have a medical at Chelsea on Friday before a £15m move to Stamford Bridge.

Barkley turned down a move to Chelsea on transfer deadline day in August.

But negotiations between the clubs resumed once the transfer window re-opened on 1 January.

The 24-year-old England man rejected a new deal at Everton and is out of contract at the end of this season, opening the door to a cut-price move.

Barkley has yet to play this season after having hamstring surgery following a training injury but is now approaching match fitness.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce said on Thursday the club had been resigned to losing Barkley for some time.

And now, barring late hitches, he is likely to secure a move to Chelsea.

It will mean the player is leaving Goodison Park after 13 years, having joined Everton as an 11-year-old in 2005.

The academy graduate has played 150 times for Everton in the Premier League, scoring 21 times since making his debut in 2011.

  • Everton agrees to Sign Cenk Tosun for £27m from Besiktas

Everton have agreed a deal with Besiktas for striker Cenk Tosun and are now working on personal terms with the player, says boss Sam Allardyce.

The club held talks with Besiktas president Fikret Orman on Wednesday over a deal expected to be worth £27m.

Tosun, 26, had been in London awaiting permission to complete his move.

Allardyce said he was hopeful Tosun would be registered in time to feature against Liverpool in the FA Cup third round on Friday.

“We’ve agreed a deal and are at the stage of personal terms,” he added.

The deal had been delayed as Besiktas held out for a better deal than the £25m Everton thought would be enough to seal the transfer.

Tosun has helped Besiktas reach the last 16 of the Champions League, where they will meet Bayern Munich.

Everton manager Allardyce identified the German-born Turkey international as the forward to add goals and threat to his squad following the failure to replace Romelu Lukaku after his £90m move to Manchester United.

Orman flew to London to try and reach an agreement with Everton as a transfer deal they hoped to do swiftly once the January transfer window opened threatened to become drawn out.

Tosun will become Allardyce’s first signing since succeeding Ronald Koeman.

  • Man Utd go second with victory at Everton

Man Utd go second with victory at Everton

Manchester United moved into second place in the Premier League after second-half goals from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard gave them victory over Everton.

Martial curled the ball into the net from the edge of the area to break the deadlock before Lingard also bent a shot beyond Jordan Pickford from distance.

Juan Mata hit a post for United while Oumar Niasse spurned Everton’s best chances.

The win ends United’s run of three straight draws, while Everton, now without a win in four, stay ninth.

United looked to be close to their best in the second half, with Paul Pogba providing the assists for both goals.

Lingard’s stunning strike was his seventh in the league this season, all scored in nine appearances since 28 November.

  • I am not interested in moving to Everton-John Obi Mikel

Nigeria and Tiajin Teda midfielder John Mikel Obi has slammed rumours linking him with a move to English Premiership side Everton as “untrue”.

Reports emerged over the weekend that the Super Eagles midfielder wants to move from Far East.

Speaking to his club television channel on Tuesday, Mikel said, “I don’t know from where such a rumour could come, but this story is untrue.

“I want to stay in the CSL and play for Teda. I’m sure there will be lots of speculation about me as the transfer window nears but it is a false rumour.

“The CSL lags behind the Premier League, but their level is still quite high. I believe more matches will help me get in shape for the 2018 World Cup.

“I just hope to stay injury free next year and have an amazing season with Teda.”as quoted by Tianjin TV

Mikel Obi played a key role in Tianjin Teda’s battle to survive relegation after they spent a major part of last season at the wrong end of the table.

The former Chelsea star made 13 CSL appearances last season, scoring once, as Teda finished 13th, two places but nine points clear of the relegation zone.
