James Rodriguez travels to Qatar for transfer talks

Everton midfielder James Rodriguez has travelled to Qatar for talks with a club before a potential move to the Middle East.

The 30-year-old Colombian international’s status at Goodison has looked uncertain after manager Rafael Benitez replaced Carlo Ancelotti in the summer.

The former Real Madrid player, who joined Everton for a nominal fee a year ago, has yet to play for Benitez this season, missing several games because of a coronavirus-related issue.

His last game for the club came in a 1-0 defeat by Sheffield United on 16 May.

With Rodriguez’s wages reported to be £200,000 a week, a move to another club would be a significant financial saving for Everton.

Benitez has talked about his frustration about not being able to sign more players because Financial Fair Play rules had “killed” the club.

Solskjaer personally blocked Van de Beek move to Everton

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer personally intervened to block Donny van de Beek leaving on deadline day, it has been revealed.

AD says Everton and United had agreed terms over a season-long loan arrangement for the Holland international.

Van de Beek had also accepted the move and was ready to join the Toffees only for Solskjaer to personally intervene.

The midfielder had asked to be allowed to make the switch, but the request was rejected by his manager.

Van de Beek has managed just 511 minutes as a United player since last year’s arrival from Ajax.

I made mistakes at Leicester – Everton winger

Everton winger Demarai Gray admits he made some “wrong decisions” during his time with Leicester City.

Gray left Leicester for Bayer Leverkusen last summer, but has now returned to his homeland with the Toffees.

“It was very hard,” he said in Everton’s matchday programme. “Any time you go on the pitch and touch the ball, it is the way to keep going, because of your natural love of the game. But it got to the point where I lost the love for it.

“It is a team game and I never want to cause any problems. My attitude is good. But if you are not being rewarded for training well, you ask yourself: ‘What’s the point?’

“You have to find it in yourself to stay strong. If you go in and sulk it is a wasted day. But it is how you are feeling and coping at home. At the start, I didn’t cope well.

“I probably made the wrong decisions… but I don’t regret it, it is part of learning.

“If I am in that situation again, I have to focus on getting back in the team, not waste time making the wrong decisions.”

I won’t miss football when I retire – Everton captain

Everton captain Seamus Coleman admits he’s planning for retirement.

However, he admits he could walk away from the game when the time comes for him to hang up the playing boots.

“I’m doing my coaching badges at the moment and I have enjoyed doing them, but I could easily disappear back to Donegal with the family and not have too much to do with football,” he told the Sunday World.

“If that happens, I will miss football, don’t get me wrong, because I love it. That love for football has never faded for me through the years.

“I go in every day and I love it. I’m grateful that I am able to work in this profession and I love working hard in training every day.

“Will I go into management? I honestly don’t know. I’ve worked under a lot of great managers, all very different in the way they do things, and you learn something from each one of them.

“If I went into coaching and management, I’d take what I have seen from each of them with me into that job, soak up all the information each one brings, and try to blend it all together for when you become a coach or a manager.

“I see a lot of players saying life after football can be a scary thought, but it doesn’t frighten me at all.

“I’m not going to miss the feeling of being a footballer. It won’t leave a void in my life. It doesn’t scare me at all.”

Villarreal forward Samuel Chukwueze is back on the radar of Premier League clubs.

The Athletic reports Everton are considering a move for the Nigeria international.

Rafa Benitez is said to be an admirer of the 22-year-old Nigeria international, who has a £71million buy-out clause in his current contract.

Chukwueze, who is under contract until 2023, has also been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United in the Premier League.

Andros Townsend is undergoing a medical today at Everton.

The 30-year old is a free agent after his contract was allowed to run down at Crystal Palace.

The Daily Mail says Townsend is set to be joined at Goodison by former Leicester winger Demarai Gray. Everton are talking to his current club Bayer Leverkusen with a buyout clause set at around £1.7m.

Crystal Palace have also expressed an interest in 25-year old Gray.

Everton are also among the clubs to have asked about Burnley’s Dwight McNeil as they look to improve the service into their strikers. They also need cover with Richardson taking part in the Olympics with Brazil.

We built a squad for Ancelotti and then… – Everton owner

Everton owner Farhad Moshiri admits Carlo Ancelotti’s departure for Real Madrid wrecked their long-term plans.

Everton, yesterday, appointed Rafa Benitez as the club’s new boss and Moshiri believes the 61-year-old is the right man to deliver success.

But it would appear as though Ancelotti’s decision to walk-out on Everton and Moshiri on June 1 has hurt the club’s backer.

He told talkSPORT: “It’s been difficult.

“We went to great effort to get Carlo and the sudden [decision to leave] disrupted the club and we had made our plan.

“We built a squad for him, so it caused big, big disruption. We couldn’t afford another short-term managerial period.”

I must thank Everton – Carlo Ancelotti

New Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has thanked Everton after leaving Goodison Park this week for Spain.

Ancelotti spent over two years with Everton before this week’s resignation.

He said, “I have to thank Everton, where I was very happy during the two and a half years I was there. The atmosphere was positive and the people were hard-working. I’m back with more experience, I know Real Madrid very well, the squad and I’ve met some of the players in the past. We’re going to do well.

“You have to try to improve every day. I’ve had positive experiences in Germany, Italy and England. Each experience makes you grow and I’m coming back with six more years of experience. I hope it’ll be good for Real Madrid.”

Ancelotti also said: “I remember La Décima as a massive success because that season was very good. We played well in every game and also in a very tough final against Atlético. I remember the night at Cibeles perfectly, it was incredibly enjoyable.

“I know that the fans are together with the team and I want to send them a message that I’m very happy to be back.”

Ancelotti explains leaving Everton to replace Zidane

Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti is delighted to have returned to Real Madrid.

Ancelotti has explained his decision to depart Everton and join Los Blancos, as he replaces Zinedine Zidane in the hot seat at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

The Italian coach made clear that returning to Real Madrid is an opportunity he could not turn down and stressed that he enjoyed his spell in charge of Everton.

“I would like to thank the Board of Directors, the players, and the Evertonians for the tremendous support they have all given me during my time at the Club,” said Ancelotti in a statement published on Everton’s official website.

“I have complete respect for everyone associated with Everton and hope they can achieve the exciting opportunities they have in front of them.

“While I have enjoyed being at Everton, I have been presented with an unexpected opportunity which I believe is the right move for me and my family at this time.”

Ancelotti also published a tweet thanking everyone at Everton from his own personal Twitter account.

“I would like to thank Everton FC, my players and the supporters for giving me the opportunity to manage this fantastic and historical club,” it read.

“I decided to leave as I have a new challenge with a team that was always in my heart, Real Madrid.

“I leave taking with me all the amazing moments we have experienced together and wish the Club and fans all the best.”

Arteta fumes with VAR as Everton defeat Arsenal

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti said the Toffees “are back” after a howler from Arsenal’s Bernd Leno gifted his side a crucial win in their bid for a Champions League place.

The Merseysiders had failed to win in six games in all competitions but moved to within three points of the top four with a victory which was achieved amid a backdrop of protest.

Over 1,000 Arsenal supporters gathered outside Emirates Stadium to show their anger about owner Stan Kroenke’s role in the failed European Super League.

The goal came when Everton forward Richarlison tried to roll a pass across the six-yard box. Leno should have scooped it up, but the ball slipped through the Arsenal keeper’s hands, hitting his leg on the way in.

That was a rare moment of goalmouth action on the night as Everton won at Arsenal in the league for the first time since 1996.

Gylfi Sigurdsson came closest before that when his 30-yard free-kick hit the bar.

“It was really important to stay attached to the top of the table,” Ancelotti told BBC Sport. “The performance was good. It’s all good news tonight and this gives us confidence for the next games.

“Finally I can say we are back.”

Arsenal were awarded a penalty in the second half after Richarlison nicked Dani Ceballos – but it was overturned by the video assistant referee for a Nicolas Pepe offside in the build-up.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said: “We were the better team but there are certain decisions that we can’t control.

“To disallow a penalty 15 seconds before – [we had] eight or nine touches [after Pepe was offside] – I saw it 10 times and I don’t get it. It can be taken the way they want. Zero control. Somebody has to explain that.”
