    Over 2000 international Elite athletes register for Gold-Label Access Bank Lagos City Marathon

    Over two thousand international Elite athletes from across the world have registered for the Gold-Label Access Bank Lagos City Marathon, setting a record of entries for any Marathon race on the continent of Africa.

    The General Manager of the race, Yussuf Alli, said at the weekend that: “The Elite entries would have been more, if the organisers had not regulated it to a barest size over a week ago. Towards effective and efficient management of the race. The large size was expected at it’s one of the effects of a Gold-Label race. And Nilayo Sports Management is ready for it.”

    Yussuf, revealed that, majority of the Elite athletes are from Europe, East Africa, North Africa, West Africa, Asia and South America.

    “And out of the pool of registered international Elite athletes, the organisers have officially invited 47 male and 29 female world class athletes that will lead the bunch of first class athletes in the race. While the rest will compete to chase the Gold-Label status as they continue in their quest to garner requisite internatiinal points to attain firstclass Elite status as they grow professionally.”

    He noted that; “The Lagos City Marathon’s quest to attain to the Platinum Label race status, which is uppermost in the desires of the organisers, Nilayo Sports Management Ltd, will be boosted if two male Elite athletes can finish the race under 2 hours 10minutes and three female athletes finish under 2 hours 12 minutes.”

    Yussuf, a former African record holder in the Long Jump, noted that, for the 8th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon Gold-Label race, the athletes would have their running numbers in front and their names at the back of their competition jerseys.
    “And to avoid any form of controversy, as clearly stipulated by World Athletics, there will be the photo finish device at the finish line of the race at the Eko Atlantic City, Victoria Island.

    Meanwhile, in preparation for the firstever Gold-Label race in Nigeria, the Expo for the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will begin this morning at the Teslim Balogun, Surulere.

    The Expo would see :registered runners pick up their running kits and numbers. The organisers will also have series of exhibitions towards the success of the Gold-Label race. Health talks and several other events geared towards the sucessful organisation of the race.

    The Expo will run from today January 23 to February 2, two days to the race on February 4. The start line for the Gold-Label Access Bank Lagos City Marathon has been slated for the National Stadium, Surulere, for the full Marathon.

    There will also be the 10km race, which for the first time in Nigeria would see Elite athletes compete, as the organisers will be using the race to apply for a Gold-Label race status for 10km.

  • Science expo: Exhibitors call for funding to boost science, technology

    Exhibitors at the ongoing 4th Science and Technology Expo have appealed to the Federal Government to fund their researches to boost the science and technology sector of the country.

    The expo is organised by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Education Secretariat, Department of Science and Technology holding from March 13 to March 15.

    The theme of this year’s expo is “Technology and Society in the 21ST Century’’.

    Some of the exhibitors, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria, said they were always invited to the expos to exhibit their innovations and inventions but nothing to show for their efforts.

    The exhibitors were therefore appealing to government to provide funds to enable them commercialise their innovations.

    Mr Adetuji Kolawole, the Chairman FCT, Chapter of Motor Mechanics and Technicians Association of Nigeria told NAN that the Federal Government could assist its members to develop the car tracking system they invented.

    Kolawole said they were a team of professionals that specialises in car tracking system, which could monitor cars with smart phones anywhere and anytime.

    “This is something we can produce in our country to reduce the high rate of unemployment in this country.

    “ If the government can assist us in providing funds and an enabling environment for us to comfortably produce all these things, it will encourage us a great deal.

    “We have written to different agencies under the science and technology ministry, both at the federal and state level, and we are getting good results from them,’’ he said.

    Mrs Christiana Okonta, a representative of Government Girls Secondary School, Dutse who showcased portable waste water and management plant using moringa seed, appealed to the government to help showcase the project of the students.

    “We appeal to government to showcase our project for Nigerians to see and to commercialise.

    “We came together as a team to analysis our country and we discovered that the country was passing through a lot of challenges in the area of epileptic power supply, unemployment, food scarcity and water borne diseases.

    “That was why we came out with the project to address some of these challenges.’’

    Miss Jessica Njoku of Young Girls Science Club also told NAN that the club was appealing to government to heighten its support in science and technology sector.

    Njoku called government to build more science and technical schools in different parts of the country, adding that this would encourage more Nigerian children to take up science and technology.

    “Therefore increasing the country’s opportunity to advance in science and technology.

    “This is what prompted us to establish the club in to encourage girls in science and technology.’’

     

  • FG ready to hold Technology, Innovation Expo’s 2018 in March

    The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (FMST) says it will hold Technology and Innovation Expo 2018 to promote commercialisation of research and development results to aid diversification of the economy.

    The Ministry in a statement said the theme of the Expo 2018 would be “Fast tracking Sustainable Development of Nigeria through Science and Technology“.

    The expo is scheduled to hold from March 5 to March 9 in Abuja.

    It said the success achieved at the 2017 edition of the Science, Technology and Innovation Expo held from April 3 to April 7, 2017 had further spurred the interest of the investors to commercialise research and development results to aid diversification of the economy.

    “The Federal Ministry of Science and Technology wishes to inform the general public of the next edition of the Science, Technology and Innovation Expo 2018 coming up from the March 5 to March 9, 2018 at the Eagle Square, Abuja, Nigeria.

    “Expo 2018 will build upon the objectives of the foregoing Expo of 2017, “ the statement read.

    According to the statement, main objectives of the 2018 edition will include follow-up on Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) signed as a result of the previous expo and promoting collaborations among research institutions and researchers/inventors.

    It said that the event would encourage interactions between researchers and investors with a view to commercialising research results, inventions and innovations from Nigeria’s research and tertiary institutions.

    It said the Expo 2018 would facilitate growth of indigenous manufacturing hinged on Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) as well as generally promoting STI culture in Nigeria.

    “Fast tracking the implementation of the National Science, Technology and Innovation Road Map -2030 to bring to fore capabilities of Nigerian Scientists, Engineers, and Inventors/Innovators in contributing to economic diversification of Nigeria,“ it said.

    The ministry said the 2018 edition of the Technology and Innovation Expo would feature exhibitions of research and development results, inventions, innovations, STI Products/Services.

    Others are researchers/investors forum, technical sessions on emerging issues, Special Days for States, conglomerates, awards of prizes, certificates to outstanding exhibitors and researchers.

     

  • CashlessAfrica Expo 2017 holds March in Lagos

    CashlessAfrica Expo 2017 event as part of the MobileMoneyAfrica conference series has been announced to hold in March 2017 in Lagos by the event organizers.

    According to a press release by the Event Director, West Ekhator, the CashlessAfrica conference, which is a platform for financial services supply side actors to share their innovation, will hold beginning 22 March 2017 with the theme: “the future of finance”.

    Ekhator said, “Digital disruption is shifting the balance stay of power in financial services and influencing the way, millions of people bank their money, make payments, remittances and more, in a continent where mobile phone penetration exceed bank accounts and bank cards ownership, combined”.

    “Africa’s highly regulated financial industry now needs to adapt itself to the on-going disruptions in the Fintech space and the increasing demands of young and energetic customers which represent a significant percentage of the continent’s population”.

    Ekhator said that this series of the event represents a unique opportunity for the industry players to “rethink their current models and gain valuable market insight of the African digital financial services market.”

    According to the release, the conference agenda, keynote and interactive sessions will focus on carefully selected topics such as:

    • The digital bank and evolution in a competitive market;
    • The future of banking, money and payments in Africa;
    • Disruptive technologies and their impact on financial services in Africa;
    • Balancing regulation against innovation;
    • Remittances in the digital age;
    • Fintechs and Banks: Collaboration or Competition;
    • Protecting the customer in a digitalized economy.

    “New for 2017, the expo will host a Hackathon session which will drive collaboration to co-create solutions to compelling financial services challenges across Africa and the CashlessAfrica champion awards, given to organizations that have made a significant contribution to the digital financial services industry in Africa,” a statement read on the release.

    The conference which will round off 23 March will hold at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, Nigeria with the industry key thought leaders converging from more than 40 countries to address the theme.

    According to the release, speakers already signed up for the event are from Helix institute, Pwc Nigeria, Oradian, Millicom, Voguepay, Barclays Bank, Musoni, Wallettec, Konga, Redcloud, TransferTo, Chamsmobile, ConnectAfrica, Hormuud Telecoms, Impala pay and M-paya.
