FA Cup: Palace thump Fulham to reach semi-final

Crystal Palace won a sixth successive away match across all competitions without conceding, with this 3-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage sending them through to the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the third time in the last nine years.

The visitors were able to welcome striker Jean-Philippe Mateta back into the starting XI for the first time since his horror injury in the previous round, but his impact was limited by a dominant start from Fulham.

Opposite number Rodrigo Muniz could have opened the scoring inside two minutes after bullying his way through the Palace defence, but his left-footed strike was curled wide of the target.

Marco Silva’s men were in complete command, but working Dean Henderson was proving tricky, as Andreas Pereira proved when he dragged an effort wide following some great work down the left by Calvin Bassey.

After a stoppage in play at the first half’s midway point, Palace gained a foothold in the contest and finally threatened through Jefferson Lerma, whose outside-of-the-foot volley cannoned off the crossbar.

That was a sign of things to come as the Eagles broke the deadlock in some style through Eberechi Eze, who backed up his maiden England goal by dropping a shoulder to beat a man on the edge of the area before brilliantly curling into the bottom corner.

Four of his last five Palace goals have come in cup competitions, and he turned provider to double the visitors’ lead before the break with a pinpoint cross to the near post that was headed home by Ismaïla Sarr.

With no improvement evident from his side upon the restart, Silva turned to his bench and introduced Emile Smith Rowe and Adama Traoré in an attempt to change the game.

The Cottagers were immediately more dynamic, with Willian forcing Henderson into a smart save before Bassey was denied by a stunning block from Sarr at point-blank range.

Those misses proved especially costly, as Palace regrouped and found the net again to put the contest to bed.

Daichi Kamada released fellow substitute Eddie Nketiah to slot past Bernd Leno, putting the seal on a comprehensive victory that books their place in the semi-final at Wembley.

Fulham’s wait for a first appearance at that stage since 2001/02 continues, while they’ve now failed to win any of the last seven H2Hs on their own turf.

  • Enzo Maresca finds positives from FA Cup exit

Enzo Maresca finds positives from FA Cup exit

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca says there’s no reason to dwell on their FA Cup exit.

Chelsea were eliminated at the fourth round by Brighton last night.

But Maresca could see a positive from an early exit, insisting:  “We tried to come here and play our game.

“We had some chances at 2-1. Now we can focus on the Premier League and the Conference League.

“We always try to win games. But at the same time you have to take the consequences of the result.”

  • FA CUP: Top 3 players to watch this weekend

FA CUP: Top 3 players to watch this weekend

The FA Cup returns as teams from across the football pyramid compete for the oldest cup competition in the world, here are three of the top players to watch this weekend.

    HARVEY ELLIOTT

Liverpool are in incredible form at the moment under manager Arne Slot who has led his side to not only the top of the Premier League but also top of the Champions League. The Reds are currently still in every competition and are on course to lift at least one piece of silverware at the end of the season if fate goes their way.

Slot’s men will be preparing for Championship side Plymouth Argyle this weekend who currently sit bottom of the league under manager Miron Muslic who was appointed only last month after the departure of Wayne Rooney. The Dutchman will likely play a mix of youth players and senior stars who can finish the game off in the first half if possible.

Elliott is one of those players is a player who many think should be starting for both Liverpool and the England side who could use his creativity. Last season Harvey really made the engine tick going forward and in recent games, he has shown his worth with two goals against PSV Eindhoven and Lille whilst bagging an assist against Brentford.

The 21-year-old has bags of potential and former boss Jurgen Klopp conceded that he did not use him enough under his reign. Elliott should certainly get his chance against a Plymouth side who are struggling and many will hope Slot sees his ability once more.

    ALEXANDER ISAK

Newcastle United striker Isak is perhaps the best striker in the world at the moment and many were surprised he did not make a move elsewhere this winter. The Magpies are set to face Championship side Birmingham City this weekend and after the Swedish international was brought off before the 90-minute mark manager Eddie Howe will be hoping he is ready again this weekend.

The 25-year-old has 19 goals and 5 assists in just 27 appearances this season alone which makes him one of the hottest strikers in world football.

Transfer speculation linked him to the likes of Arsenal and Barcelona in recent weeks who could not lure away the striker who seems dedicated to Howe’s side. If there is a striker to keep an eye on in the fourth round of the FA Cup it is Isak who cannot stop scoring at the moment.

    MORGAN ROGERS

Rogers is perhaps the most talked about English talent at the moment as he continues to perform for Aston Villa under manager Unai Emery. Having just scored his first hat-trick in Europe, as well as making his senior England debut the 22-year-old is heading to the very top of the game much like his international teammate Jude Bellingham.

Villa face a Tottenham side this weekend who are currently in an injury crisis and have leaked 37 goals in 24 Premier League games this season. Rogers scored the only goal the last time these two sides faced each other but that was back in November when manager Ange Postecoglou had a team that was capable of playing on all fronts.

Now, Spurs come off the back of facing Liverpool and will be setting their sights on Manchester United next Sunday in a game between two teams who are nearing the relegation zone at the moment. If any player can punish a weekend Tottenham side it is Rogers and this weekend should see him find the back of the net once again.

  • Ten-man Man United flush Arsenal out of FA Cup

Ten-man Man United flush Arsenal out of FA Cup

Altay Bayindir was Manchester United’s unlikely hero as the holders held out for over an hour a man down to knock Arsenal out the FA Cup on penalties after a feisty 1-1 draw at the Emirates on Sunday.

United’s stand-in goalkeeper saved a penalty from Martin Odegaard in normal time and then denied Kai Havertz in the shootout as the wasteful Gunners had another day to forget in front of goal.

Bruno Fernandes had fired the visitors into the lead early in the second half before Diogo Dalot was sent-off on the hour mark for a second bookable offence.

Gabriel Magalhaes quickly levelled for Arsenal, but they wasted a host of chances to win the tie in 90 minutes and were made to pay.

United were perfect from the spot as the much-criticised Josua Zirkzee stroked home the winning penalty in front of the jubilant travelling support.

Defeat is another hammer blow to Mikel Arteta’s attempts to end a five-year trophy drought for Arsenal, who also lost the first leg of their League Cup semi-final 2-0 to Newcastle on Tuesday.

  • FA Cup: Everton secures win after Sean Dyche sacking

FA Cup: Everton secures win after Sean Dyche sacking

Everton avoided FA Cup embarrassment with a 2-0 victory against third-tier Peterborough just hours after Sean Dyche was sacked by the struggling Premier League club on Thursday.

Dyche was axed less than four hours before the third-round tie, with the club’s new owners, the Friedkin Group, reportedly in talks with former Everton boss David Moyes about a return to Goodison Park.

Moyes is the bookmakers’ favourite for the job of saving Everton from relegation, 12 years after he left for Manchester United.

The Scot, who managed Everton in a successful spell between 2002 and 2013, has been out of work since leaving West Ham at the end of last season.

The Toffees are once again battling to avoid relegation after winning just one of their past 11 games, with that sole success coming against lowly Wolves in December.

Dyche was at the Everton training ground earlier on Thursday to say his goodbyes after the axe fell, while the matchday programme for the Peterborough game still contained his column.

Former Everton defender Leighton Baines, now the club’s under-18s coach, and captain Seamus Coleman took charge against Peterborough, using the starting lineup selected by Dyche before his dismissal.

Peterborough’s Cian Hayes’ was inches away from giving them a shock first-half lead when his low drive was cleared off the line by Jarrad Branthwaite.

But Beto finally lifted the mood among Everton’s subdued fans in the 42nd minute as he took Harrison Armstrong’s pass inside the area, rounded Peterborough keeper Nicholas Bilokapic and slotted into the empty net.

In a blow to Everton, on-loan Chelsea striker Armando Broja needed oxygen before being stretchered off with his right ankle heavily strapped.

There was no family affair for Everton defender Ashley Young, who came off the bench in the closing minutes, while his teenage son Tyler, who plays for Peterborough, remained an unused substitute.

But Branthwaite was fouled by Jadel Katongo in stoppage time and Iliman Ndiaye converted the penalty as Everton made a winning start to life without Dyche.

FA Cup: United did the unthinkable, beat City 2-1 to win trophy at Wembley

Manchester United on Saturday evening defeated Manchester City 2-1 to win the FA Cup for the second year running and thus grabbed the last qualifying spot for Europa next season.

City were the Overwhelming favourite to win but United did the unthinkable against all odds.

United opened the scoring in the 30th minute of the match. A terrible mistake led to the goal. The defender ended up losing possession, allowing Alejandro Garnacho to pick up the ball before slotting it into the back of the net.

Bruno Fernandes played a fantastic through ball and found Mainoo, who reacted quickly to get in front of the goalkeeper and fired a close-range shot into the bottom right corner to make it 2-0 few minutes before half time.

Erling Haaland missed an opportunity to put City back in the game in the 55th minute of the encounter.

In the 59th minute, Kyle Walker received a low pass just outside the box and unleashed a fine strike towards the right post. Andre Onana pulled off a reflexive save to block his effort.

Jeremy Doku eventually reduced the tally in the 87th minute of the encounter but it was too late as United defense ensured they double their effort to prevent City’s onslaught.

The result meant United have grabbed the last Europa League Spot and further pushed Chelsea to Europa Conference League.

Newcastle’s hope of featuring in next year’s continental games has been dashed with the outcome of the result.
