FA Cup: Man Utd to investigate abuse aimed at Lingard

Manchester United have condemned the foul-mouthed abuse aimed at Jesse Lingard after their FA Cup fifth round win on Thursday and will contact Derby County as part of a further investigation.

A video on social media showed fans subjecting Lingard to a torrent of abuse as he boarded the team bus after Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Derby at Pride Park.

The 27-year-old played the full 90 minutes against Derby, but has not been part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting line-up in the league since New Year’s Day against Arsenal.

He has scored twice across all competitions this season.

FA Cup: Ighalo double sends Man Utd to quarter-final [Watch]

Wayne Rooney was overshadowed by Odion Ighalo as Manchester United ensured an all-Premier League FA Cup quarter-final line-up with a comfortable win at Derby County.

Rooney – United’s all-time leading goalscorer – had his name chanted throughout by the thousands of away fans and came close with two fine free-kicks.

But from the moment left-back Luke Shaw’s deflected opener flew in the Premier League side were able to cruise into the last eight.

January signing Ighalo again showed why his surprise acquisition may yet prove to be shrewd business with two smart finishes to book a tie with Norwich at Carrow Road later this month. He now has three goals from just two starts.

United have won the FA Cup 12 times – one behind Arsenal’s record haul – while Derby have now played in six fifth-round ties since 1999 and failed to reach the quarter-finals on each occasion.

  • Aguero sends Man City into FA Cup quarter-finals

Sergio Aguero’s second-half goal proved enough for holders Manchester City to beat second-tier Sheffield Wednesday 1-0, but they made hard work of reaching the FA Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

It looked like a practice game at times for Pep Guardiola’s side at Hillsborough but they struggled to convert their overwhelming superiority into goals.

Nicolas Otamendi and Benjamin Mendy were both denied by the woodwork before Aguero finally made the breakthrough in the 53rd minute courtesy of an error by keeper Joe Wildsmith.

Leicester City beat Birmingham City 1-0 to book their place in the last eight . Ricardo Pereira’s late header sealing a tight Midlands derby.

Tottenham Hotspur and Norwich City were playing extra time after their fifth-round tie ended 1-1.

  • Chelsea knock Liverpool out of FA Cup

Chelsea have dumped Liverpool out of the FA Cup after winning 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals.

Coming on the back of 3-0 drubbing by Watford, Liverpool were miserable against Chelsea.

Liverpool made seven changes to the side that lost surprisingly at Watford on Saturday – the first reverse of their league campaign after a run of 18 successive victories left them on the brink of a first title for 30 years.

Chelsea, however, still had to overcome a Liverpool team containing the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez in a hard-fought fifth-round tie.

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian gifted Willian Chelsea’s opener after 13 minutes when he hopelessly fumbled his 20-yard shot, but the European champions had chances of their own only to see recalled keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga present a formidable barrier with a string of saves.

The game was effectively settled after 64 minutes when former Everton midfielder Ross Barkley surged from inside his own half on a solo run before beating Adrian with an emphatic strike, BBC reports.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will now have Wembley in his sights while Liverpool counterpart Jurgen Klopp will return to task of completing the formalities of the title win and overcoming a 1-0 deficit from the Champions League last 16 first leg against Atletico Madrid.

  • Arsenal youngster showed they were worth the risk – Arteta

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said the club’s young players are “worth the risk” after his youthful team beat League One Portsmouth at a noisy Fratton Park to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Arteta named a side with six players aged 20 or under and they looked in control, especially in the second half, as they beat a team which had not lost in 19 home games and had won their previous 10.

Pompey played well in the first half but trailed to Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ volley from Reiss Nelson’s cross just before the break.

Eddie Nketiah bundled home from close range from another Nelson cross to wrap up the victory six minutes after the restart.

Pompey’s only shot on target came in the second half, with substitute Ronan Curtis’ effort saved.

“I’m really pleased with them,” Arteta told BBC Sport. “I’m enjoying working with the players. They deserve a chance. It’s always a risk but they’re worth the risk.

“It was a great atmosphere and Portsmouth made it difficult. We knew we’d have moments we could suffer but we reacted and got control of the game. We got two goals and could have had a few more.”

  • Lampard bemoans Chelsea’s injury crisis ahead of Liverpool clash

Chelsea’s progress has been severely dented this season due to a number of injury setbacks, manager Frank Lampard said on Monday.

Lampard said several senior players would be unavailable for Tuesday’s FA Cup fifth round clash with Liverpool as a result of this.

Players such as influential midfielder N’Golo Kante have had a stop-start campaign while others like Antonio Rudiger have either returned from injury recently or been sidelined like winger Christian Pulisic.

“There were a few (injuries) overlapping from last year, which were huge: N’Golo Kante, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Antonio Rudiger.

“It’s been an issue and now we have another bulk,” Lampard told reporters when asked why Chelsea have struggled.

“There are no fresh returns from the injury list. Andreas Christensen has got a small issue which we are going to give another 24 hours, but probably puts him in out of the game.

“Other than that we have no Tammy Abraham, no Pulisic, no Hudson-Odoi and no Kante.”

Abraham, who is the club’s leading goal scorer this season with 15 goals in all competitions, suffered an ankle injury, with Lampard having no update on his return to the side.

“(Abraham) went to Barcelona to get another set of eyes on it,” Lampard added. “He came back relatively positive.

“Unfortunately, he’s a bit unwell at the moment. So, he’s been off for a couple of days with a bit of a bug. There’s no update, no idea when he’ll be back.

“Christian has had a big phase out and is desperate to get back. When (they can return) I’m not giving an answer… I can’t see the answer.

“I’m hoping they might be fit over the next week or two, I just can’t say it with clarity.”

English Premier League (EPL) leaders Liverpool lost their first league game of the season at Watford over the weekend.

Even though Lampard believes it proved they were vulnerable, he said they have still had an “incredible season”.

“They’ve become relatively human. But it’s one game,” Lampard said. “They’re a strong team and they’ve been out on their own this season.

“We will have to be at our best. I don’t mind playing midweek. The FA Cup is a huge competition. Evening games bring a different atmosphere and playing Liverpool is always big for us.”

  • Iheanacho seals Leicester FA Cup victory

Iheanacho seals Leicester FA Cup victory

Leicester held off a spirited second-half effort from Championship promotion chasers Brentford to reach the FA Cup fourth round in the final tie to be held at Griffin Park.

Kelechi Iheanacho scored the only goal of the game after just four minutes when he tapped in a cross from full-back James Justin, who had been found by Dennis Praet’s superb raking pass.

Leicester were the better team in the first half and Ayoze Perez should have doubled their lead when he was sent clear by Iheanacho but Bees keeper Luke Daniels made a good save to deny him.

However, the hosts came out for the second half with a renewed vigour to their play, and they were unlucky not to equalise on the hour mark when Emiliano Marcondes’ cross beat everyone and hit the post.

Foxes keeper Danny Ward was also forced into a fine save to keep out Luka Racic’s volley late on before second-half substitute Bryan Mbeumo saw a goal ruled out for offside.

The inexperienced hosts pressed for an equaliser right up until the final whistle but the Premier League side held firm to book their place in the next round of the FA Cup.

There were emotional scenes at the full-time whistle for the home fans at the end of Griffin Park’s final cup tie, with the Bees set to move to the newly built Brentford Community Stadium before the 2020-21 campaign.

  • Guardiola wants FA Cup replays scrapped

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says the scrapping of FA Cup replays could be the solution to football’s crowded fixture schedule.

The City boss has previously expressed his concern at the increasing demands placed on players.

Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Fulham will be City’s 37th game of the season.

“The Carabao Cup and FA Cup will be played. But maybe we could cancel the replays, have less teams in the Championship or Premier League,” said Guardiola.

“What is nice about this country is how you maintain the traditions. In traditions you can involve some new things to make the competitions nicer, but all the traditions are there, not just in sport but in culture and society and that is top. I admire that.

“I’m not saying what the FA has to do. When I said my comment I never expected the Carabao Cup or FA Cup was going to go.

“I tried to be honest and answer the question but I don’t think about what they have to do, it’s not my business. My business is to prepare my team better every day.

“When they decide to play these games, and the other games, we do it.”

Though City are still competing on four fronts, their grip on the Premier League title looks to be slipping away with Liverpool 16 points clear at the top with a game in hand.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have dropped just two points all season and look on course to break City’s record 100-point tally of two years ago.

“It can happen. The records are always there to be broken,” said Guardiola. “We broke it when someone thought it couldn’t be broken.

“Sooner or later it is going to happen – this season or in the future. History speaks clearly about that.”

  • FA Cup: Tottenham survive late scare to reach fourth round

FA Cup: Tottenham survive late scare to reach fourth round

Tottenham gained a hard-fought victory over Championship side Middlesbrough in their FA Cup third-round replay.

Spurs were gifted a second-minute lead when Boro goalkeeper Tomas Mejias passed the ball to Giovani lo Celso, who cut inside a challenge and scored.

Lamela doubled the hosts’ advantage after 15 minutes when he flicked the ball past Mejias after a fine run.

George Saville pulled one back late on for Boro with a low strike from 20 yards out, but it was not enough.

Middlesbrough substitute Rudy Gestede had a chance to force extra-time but he could only head over the bar from eight yards as Spurs held on for the win.

Tottenham, who have won the FA Cup eight times, will play at Southampton in the fourth round later this month.
