FA Cup: Gray strike sends Watford into semi-finals

Second-half substitute Andre Gray scored two minutes after coming on to send Watford into the FA Cup semi-finals with victory over Crystal Palace at Vicarage Road.

The Hornets had earlier led through Etienne Capoue’s instinctive finish before Michy Batshuayi levelled for the Eagles, finishing coolly after dispossessing Adrian Mariappa.

But soon after after replacing Will Hughes, Gray fired past Vincente Guaita to send his club into only their sixth FA Cup semi-final.

After retaking the lead the hosts looked the more likely side to score as Troy Deeney saw an effort well saved and Aaron Wan-Bissaka made a crucial intervention to keep out Gerard Deulofeu in the closing stages.

Javi Gracia’s Watford have now beaten Palace three times this season, having done the double over them in the Premier League.

  • [Video] Ashley Cole scores first FA Cup goal

Former Chelsea and Arsenal left-back, Ashley Cole scores his first FA Cup goal to give Derby hope in their fifth-round tie, but hosts Brighton hold on to secure a 2-1 victory and a place in the quarter-finals.

The 38-year-old played the second half of the match against Brighton, making only his second appearance since joining in January.

Derby coach, Frank Lampard described Cole as a “machine” after scoring in defeat to Brighton, and said they will need the defender for their Championship promotion push.

“He has been working hard. He wasn’t quite ready for 90 minutes today but that’s a great exercise he has given 45 minutes. I thought he was calm and assured on the ball. He has all the experience from his career and got his goal. It’s really good for us and we will need him.”

Chelsea to face Man Utd in FA Cup fifth round

Holders Chelsea have been drawn to face Manchester United in the FA Cup fifth round, a repeat of last year’s final.

With Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool already out of the competition, Monday’s draw means that, at most, only two of the top six will progress to the quarter-finals.

Chelsea won last year’s final at Wembley 1-0 thanks to an Eden Hazard penalty.

Giant-killers Newport County, who play in League Two (fourth tier), could face Premier League champions Manchester City if they can win their replay against Middlesbrough.

Newport, who have already knocked out top-flight Leicester City, drew 1-1 at Middlesbrough on Saturday and host the replay on Feb. 5.

Doncaster Rovers, who play in League One (third tier) and are in the fifth round for the first time in 63 years, will host Premier League side Crystal Palace.

League One AFC Wimbledon, who knocked out top-flight West Ham United, take on Championship (second-tier) Millwall, who eliminated Everton in the fourth round.

FA Cup: Hudson-Odoi scores as Chelsea cruise into fifth round

Holders Chelsea comfortably beat Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup with Callum Hudson-Odoi scoring 24 hours after handing in a transfer request.

Winger Hudson-Odoi, 18, showed the type of poise which has led to a £35m bid from Bayern Munich by collecting Andreas Christensen’s diagonal pass and cutting inside before firing past Keiran Westwood for his second goal of the season.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri was rewarded for handing Hudson-Odoi a sixth start of the season as his goal put the result of a feisty game beyond doubt.

Earlier, Willian scored the first of his two goals from the penalty spot, before making it 3-0 after a smart one-two with Olivier Giroud, who replaced debutant Gonzalo Higuain.

The opener, Willian’s 50th goal for Chelsea, came in controversial circumstances after the visitors had earned their own spot-kick 162 seconds earlier, only for it to be overturned by VAR.

FA Cup: Tottenham suffers shock exit as Palace go through

Tottenham went out of their second knockout competition in four days after defeat by Crystal Palace in the FA Cup fourth round at Selhurst Park.

Having lost a Carabao Cup semi-final to Chelsea on penalties on Thursday, Spurs were 2-0 down inside 35 minutes.

Connor Wickham marked his first start since November 2016 with a goal before a penalty by ex-Spurs midfielder Andros Townsend doubled the lead.

Spurs missed a penalty before half-time when Kieran Trippier blazed wide.

It was their third miss from the spot in two games after Lucas Moura and Eric Dier failed in Thursday’s shootout at Stamford Bridge as Spurs went out of the EFL Cup.

A much-changed Tottenham side were lacklustre against Palace.

On the few occasions they did create serious chances, they could not find a way past Julian Speroni, with the 39-year-old Argentine keeper making crucial saves to keep out Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Fernando Llorente.

Palace fans celebrated wildly at the final whistle after a first win over Tottenham since 2016 saw them advance to the fifth round for the first time since the 2015-16 season, when they went on to reach the final.

  • FA Cup: Manchester City crush Burnley 5-0

FA Cup: Manchester City crush Burnley 5-0

Manchester City eased into the fifth round of the FA Cup as they thrashed Burnley at Etihad Stadium.

Gabriel Jesus scored with a low strike after a fine run, although Matej Vydra wasted a good chance to equalise.

That miss proved to be costly as Bernardo Silva’s shot went through Nick Pope’s hands, before Kevin de Bruyne added a third with a powerful effort.

Kevin Long’s own goal made it 4-0 and a Sergio Aguero penalty, after David Silva was fouled, sealed the rout.

City, who last won the competition in 2011, have now scored 30 goals in seven games in 2019, while Burnley suffered their first defeat in six matches.

Pep Guardiola’s side won the Premier League and Carabao Cup last season and are still on course for a quadruple in 2018-19.

They face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final, play a Schalke side who are in the bottom half of the German Bundesliga in the Champions League last 16, are only four points adrift of Premier League leaders Liverpool and are now into the last 16 of the FA Cup.

Playing their seventh of eight games in January, they dominated from the start against Burnley, with Jesus not far from connecting with De Bruyne’s low cross, before Bernardo and Danilo both had shots saved by Pope.

But one-time England international Pope – making only his third appearance of the season – was helpless to stop Jesus’ powerful low strike that gave the hosts a 23rd-minute lead.

With Burnley 16th in the Premier League, manager Sean Dyche opted to make seven changes, and his side failed to have a single shot on target as City totalled 75% possession.

However, the visitors should have scored within three minutes of the restart when Otamendi gave the ball to Vydra but the Czech Republic international shot wastefully wide with only Ederson to beat.

Within five minutes of that miss, it was 2-0 as Bernardo’s low shot took a deflection and went through the arms of Pope.

The Burnley goalkeeper made up for that error as he tipped Riyad Mahrez’s effort wide, although he had no chance with De Bruyne’s well-struck effort for City’s third goal.

Clarets defender Long then put the ball into his own net for City’s fourth when De Bruyne’s powerful cross hit him and went in.

Long’s day got even worse with a needless foul on David Silva and Aguero – on as a 75th minute substitute – made it 5-0 from 12 yards to seal a routine victory for the home side.

FA Cup: Joselu rescues Newcastle in extra-time

Newcastle scored two goals in extra time to defeat Blackburn in their FA Cup third-round replay at Ewood Park.

Sean Longstaff scored after a minute for the visitors with a deflected 25-yard shot, before Callum Roberts added the second with a fine volley.

But Adam Armstrong pulled one back from Danny Graham’s pass and Darragh Lenihan’s powerful header made it 2-2.

In extra time, Joselu scored from a rebound and Ayoze Perez’s powerful strike sealed the win for the visitors.

Spanish striker Joselu appeared to be slightly offside for the goal that made it 3-2, as he reacted quickest after Blackburn keeper David Raya had spilled Fabian Schar’s long-range shot.

Newcastle’s win was their first in seven games in all competitions, since a 1-0 Premier League victory at Huddersfield on 15 December, and they will play Watford at home in the fourth round on 26 January.

It is also only the sixth time they have won an FA Cup tie since Mike Ashley became the owner of the club in 2007.

  • FA Cup: Man City thrash Rotherham 7-0 to reach fourth round

FA Cup: Man City thrash Rotherham 7-0 to reach fourth round

Phil Foden scored his first goal at Etihad Stadium as a strong Manchester City side hit seven against Rotherham to reach the FA Cup fourth round.

Midfielder Foden, 18, made it 2-0 from the edge of the six-yard box after Raheem Sterling had opened the scoring from Kevin de Bruyne’s pass.

Championship side Rotherham found it tough going and an own goal by Semi Ajayi made it 3-0 before half-time.

Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane also scored.

It was another powerful attacking performance by Pep Guardiola’s defending Premier League champions against a side who are 21st in the second tier.

The visitors did force goalkeeper Ederson into a fine save to deny Michael Smith in the closing stages but Rotherham remain without a win in the FA Cup since November 2013.

It was Guardiola’s joint-biggest win since taking charge of City in the summer of 2016.
