FA Cup: Liverpool knock out Arsenal, Man City cruise to victory

An own goal by Jakub Kiwior and a thumping late strike by Luis Diaz sealed a 2-0 victory for Liverpool at Arsenal in the weekend’s headline FA Cup third round tie.

The result meant the hosts’ dismal form extended into the New Year on Sunday.

Arsenal wasted a sackful of chances in the first half and were made to pay as Liverpool captain Trent Alexander-Arnold’s free kick glanced off the head of Kiwior in the 80th minute.

Diaz then made sure of eight-time winners Liverpool’s place in the fourth round draw as he lashed home in stoppage time.

Earlier on Sunday holders Manchester City romped to a 5-0 victory over second-tier Huddersfield Town with Phil Foden scoring twice and Belgian playmaker Kevin De Bruyne returning to action after a four-month injury layoff.

Arsenal have now lost three games in a row in all competitions and the wayward finishing that has seen them drop down to fourth in the Premier League was evident again as they squandered a flurry of first-half chances.

“The performance was there and the amount of chances too.

“We just have to win the game, but we lost it and we are not capitalising.

“To win games we need to capitalise,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta told reporters.

Reiss Nelson latched on to a punt forward by Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale in the fourth minute but could only shoot into the side netting.

Captain Martin Odegaard then rattled the crossbar with a fierce drive after a mistake by Joe Gomez.

Kai Havertz could not capitalise on two good chances as Arsenal failed to punish a lacklustre Liverpool side who were without a host of players including Mohamed Salah who is on international duty and an ill Virgil van Dijk.

Arsenal continued to make chances in the second half with Bukayo Saka volleying clumsily over from Declan Rice’s cross.

Liverpool then woke up with Ramsdale saving from Diaz and Diogo Jota heading against the crossbar before the unfortunate Kiwior inadvertently glanced in Alexander-Arnold’s inswinging delivery from a free-kick.

Colombian winger Diaz then sent the 7,000 visiting fans wild as he slammed an unstoppable shot past Ramsdale.

“Everything was better in the second half.

“I’m really happy and proud we could win this game.
“Arsenal could have won it without a doubt.

“We finished it off and it spoke for the character of the boys,” Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp told reporters.

A strong Manchester City side suffered a setback when they lost defender Manuel Akanji to injury early on and Huddersfield were proving stubborn opponents.

This was until Foden fired them ahead and Julian Alvarez poked home a second before the interval.

De Bruyne entered the fray in the 57th minute and Manchester added their third a minute later.

This was after Norwegian winger Oscar Bobb tried to pick out the Belgian at the far post, only to see his deflected cross loop into the net to make it 3-0.

Foden added his second with a precise shot and De Bruyne teed up fellow substitute Jeremy Doku to complete the rout.

“We are incredibly delighted to have him back, because Kevin helps to win games.

“It is so important to have him back after a long injury,” coach Pep Guardiola told reporters.

    Elsewhere Premier League sides struggled.

Luton Town played out a scoreless draw at home against third-tier Bolton Wanderers while Nottingham Forest will also need a replay after a 2-2 draw at the City Ground against third-tier Blackpool.

West Ham United were held to a 1-1 draw at home to second-tier Bristol City.

Championship promotion hopefuls Leeds United had no such problems as striker Patrick Bamford netted a brilliant volley in a 3-0 hammering of Peterborough United.

Also, West Bromwich Albion cruised to a 4-1 win at home to Aldershot Town.

Guardiola boasts, Ten Hag reacts after FA Cup final

Manchester City moved to within one victory of completing a momentous treble as they deservedly beat arch-rivals Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Cup final thanks to Ilkay Gundogan’s record-breaking double on Saturday.

City captain Gundogan scored the fastest goal in FA Cup final history with a stunning volley after 12 seconds and struck what proved to be the winner seven minutes after halftime.

In doing so, the 32-year old, who is expected to leave Manchester City in the summer after seven trophy-laden years, became the oldest player to score an FA Cup final brace.

This was after Nat Lofthouse for Bolton Wanderers in 1958, also against Manchester United.

Manchester United were seeking to win both domestic cups in the same season for the first time in their history and wreck Manchester City’s hopes of emulating their own historic 1999 treble.

Manchester United looked to spoil the party for their ‘noisy neighbours’ after they had levelled with a 33rd-minute Bruno Fernandes penalty.

Pep Guardiola’s side resisted some late United pressure to win the trophy for a seventh time.

It is the 13th time the English league and FA Cup double has been achieved.

But Manchester City now wants more and travel to Istanbul to face Inter Milan, seeking to be crowned European champions for the first time and to equal United’s 1998/1999 Premier League/FA Cup/Champions League sweep under Alex Ferguson.

“Now we can talk about the treble,” Guardiola, who has won 11 trophies since arriving at Manchester City in 2016, said.

“Of course we still have to win the Champions League. We performed so well for our city and our fans. It was so important for us today. The FA Cup is so nice.”

For the first time in 190 meetings, the clubs were clashing for silverware, and not just bragging rights, and Wembley was decked in red and sky blue as fans braved rail strikes to descend en masse on the capital.

Smoke from the pre-match pyrotechnics had not even cleared when City took the lead in spectacular fashion.

Keeper Stefan Ortega’s long punt towards Erling Haaland and as the ball bounced into the path of Gundogan who did not hesitate to send a dipping right-foot volley arcing over a transfixed David de Gea.

“The ball just was placed amazingly for me and I just had to hit it,” he said.

“Obviously it was quite a good strike and it went in and it was amazing.”

It eclipsed the previous fastest FA Cup final goal scored by Louis Saha after 25 seconds for Everton against Chelsea in 2009 and Manchester City threatened to run riot against a stunned United.

Rodri and Jack Grealish both failed to convert good chances in the opening five minutes in which United barely touched the ball.

Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne also went close for Manchester City before United were handed an unexpected gift.

United right back Aaron Wan-Bissaka headed a diagonal ball harmlessly across the area and as play continued referee Paul Tierney was instructed to check a pitch-side VAR monitor for a possible handball by Grealish.

It was extremely harsh on Grealish, but Tierney pointed to the spot and Fernandes calmly shuffled up to send Ortega the wrong way with his penalty.

The equaliser sparked wild celebrations at the east end of the stadium where Manchester United’s fans were packed.

Briefly United looked Manchester City’s match and Raphael Varane volleyed over from a corner as halftime approached.

But it proved an illusion. Manchester City needed slightly longer in the second half to re-establish their superiority and again it was Gundogan displaying his knack for scoring crucial goals.

This time he was picked out by De Bruyne’s chipped pass.

His left-foot volley, not struck anywhere near as perfectly as his earlier effort, bounced its way through a crowded area and crept inside De Gea’s right-hand post.

Gundogan was denied a hat-trick by an offside flag and as the minutes ticked down Manchester City looked edgy with United substitute Alejandro Garnacho curling a shot agonisingly wide.

Also a crazy goalmouth scramble in stoppage time ended with the ball bouncing off Manchester City’s crossbar.

For Manchester United, they can console themselves with a League Cup trophy in manager Erik Ten Hag’s encouraging first season and will hope Inter Milan can stop Manchester City next Saturday.

“We could have done better in possession but I don’t think today is the day we express criticism because today we played a great game and we had a fantastic season,” Ten Hag said.

  • Gundogan shoots Manchester City to FA cup glory

Gundogan shoots Manchester City to FA cup glory

Manchester City’s quest to win a treble this season received a major boost after defeating Manchester United 2-1 to lift the FA Cup at Wembley.

City are attempting to equal United’s treble-winning campaign of 1999 this season, with the Premier League title and FA Cup secured and the Champions League final to come next week.

Goals from Gundogan either side of the break were enough for the team in sky blue, with Fernandes dispatching a penalty for his team in the first-half.

Manchester City took the lead inside 12 seconds of the encounter, when goalie, Stefan Ortega sent a long ball to Erling Haaland who passed to De Bruyne who then set up Ilkay Gundogan for City’s first goal of the final.

Gundogan made history in the process as the fastest-ever goal in an FA Cup final.

Manchester United equalized in the 33rd minute, Bruno Fernandes sent Stefan Ordega the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Upon resumption of the second half of the encounter, City won a free kick over on the right wing where Kevin De Bruyne sent a cross to the edge of the box.

Ilkay Gundogan again lashes to a loose ball and volleys the ball wide of David De Gea to put the Citizens ahead once again.

The match ended 2-1 in favour of City.

The result meant Manchester City join Arsenal,  Manchester United as clubs who have won the double, Premier League and the FA Cup in the same season.

  • FA Cup: Players must believe they can beat City – Ten Hag

FA Cup: Players must believe they can beat City – Ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says winning the FA Cup final should be enough motivation for players today.

United can also stop Manchester City from winning the Treble.

But Ten Hag says: “I know what is the thinking from the fans but what we want is to restore Manchester United by winning trophies so we have an opportunity to win a trophy and we don’t want to be distracted by anything.

“If it is important for the fans it is important for us so we will give everything to win the Cup. But it is not about stopping them.

“Because it is not necessary. It will not give more motivation for the team because for their motivation is already enough – it can’t be more.

“They want to win a Cup and they have an opportunity. They want to set a crown of the season so what do you need more? What is more motivation?”

This season United lost 6-3 at City before winning 2-1 in January.

Ten Hag added: “You learn from that defeat but you learn from the win as well but I can’t say afterwards that I learn something from that game so we won the second game – I don’t think so.

“What was the difference between those results? The belief. In the Etihad we didn’t show belief. In Old Trafford we were determined to win this game from the first moment on. It is up to us that we show the same belief.”

  • FA Cup: No distractions facing Man Utd in final – Guardiola

FA Cup: No distractions facing Man Utd in final – Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says they’ll throw everything at Manchester United in today’s FA Cup final.

City have the Champions League final in a week’s time.

But Guardiola says: “They know that these players will give everything to beat Manchester United.

“The consequence of the result, who knows it? I don’t know it. I don’t think Erik ten Hag knows it.

“But enjoy the moment. Tonight, when the people travel and tomorrow, unfortunately there’s still the strikes with the train, enjoy it and enjoy the same next week for the next final to see their team. It’s the best way.

“You have to understand it’s a football game. Everything can happen. And we are going to do everything, everything we can do to win against United.

“I understand completely for the City fans, who were in their shadow for decades, we are playing the first time in our history the FA Cup against them. For them, too, the first time. So we will try to do the best game as possible.

“United in the FA Cup final deserves our full attention and commitment.”

  • Why Fernandes and I often argue – Casemiro

Why Fernandes and I often argue – Casemiro

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro says he and Bruno Fernandes have a rock-solid relationship.

The pair have been seen this season regularly arguing in games.

But Casemiro, ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final, said: “I have a very good relationship with Bruno, we get on really well, and as you get to know him as a player, I can say this with complete confidence, he is one of the most important players at the club and everyone sees what a great player he is.

“We could spend all day talking about how good Bruno is because he is a fantastic player but to be honest and I say this to him, I expect a great deal from him because in my eyes, he’s one of the most important players in the team.

“So, when he misses a chance, when one of his passes goes astray, we always want him to do everything perfectly but these are normal conversations.

“I’ve never had an argument with Bruno, the opposite in fact, I just always demand a lot from him, and he demands a lot from me too.

“Behind the scenes too, sometimes we’ll say to each other, ‘You could have scored, you could have done better there, because you’ve got the quality to do it’.”
