FAAN bans 2 immigration officers from airports nationwide

The Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN ) has banned two officials of Nigeria Immigration Service from operating in any of the nation’s airports for extorting N8000 from a passenger at Lagos airport.

The Spokesperson of FAAN, Mrs Faithful Hope-Ivbaze, said in a statement on Friday in Lagos that the two immigration officials were banned from the airports after confirming the extortion at the Muritala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA).

Hope – Ivbaze said that a team of FAAN Aviation Security officers were commissioned to investigate the allegation, following a tweeted allegation on Feb. 19, 2022 by the mother of a 14-year old girl travelling on Lufthansa Airline that the two immigration officials extorted N8000 from her daughter.

“Upon investigation, they found the allegation to be true, as the officers involved were identified with the help of footages on our CCTV facility, and the cooperation from the Nigerian Immigration Service.

  • Airline operators ordered to immediately halt airfare hike

Airline operators ordered to immediately halt airfare hike

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has ordered airline operators to immediately discontinue the current implementation of airfare increase pending the outcome of its investigation.

The Executive Vice Chairman of FCCPC, Mr Babatunde Irukera, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

Irukera said the interim order was in line with Sections 17(a),(e),(l),(s),18(3)(a), 157 and 158 of the FCCPAct.

Irukera said that the commission’s investigations revealed that airline operators in supposedly association meetings discussed multiple industry-wide issues; particularly challenges experienced by their members.

He said that credible information revealed that while attendees at the meeting did not arrive at a consensus, the meeting ended in a resolution that encouraged or consented to the coordinated conduct.

According to him, the FCCPA prohibits conduct or any coordination between competitors including on the platform of trade associations.

”Specifically, Section 107 (1)(a) forbids competitors from fixing prices, while Section 108 prohibits any conspiracy, combination, agreement or arrangement between competitors in any manner that unduly restrains or injures competition.

”Coordination in increasing prices otherwise known as the cartel is an unambiguous infringement of the FCCPA.

”The current and prevailing Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (Air Transport Economic Regulations) in Regulation 18.15.2 (i) and (iii) expressly prohibits airlines from engaging in any contract, arrangement, understanding, conspiracy or combination in restraint of competition.

”This includes directly or indirectly fixing a charge, fee, rate, fare or tariff and any collusive action.

”The commission in addition to engaging the relevant stakeholders is entering and dispatching interim orders under Sections 17(a),(e),(l),(s),18(3)(a), 157 and 158 of the FCCPA.

”Prohibiting the performance or continuation of any agreement or arrangement associated with, or resulting from discussions, deliberations, debates, argument or resolutions of/at any meeting.

”Regarding any increase in airfares and or any conduct not necessarily directly in compliance, but in response to changes in the market on account of compliance by others,” he said.

Irukera enjoined scheduled domestic airline operators to ensure strict and prompt compliance with the interim order pending the outcome of the commission’s investigation.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that domestic airline operators resolved to increase airfares by 100 per cent with effect from March 1.

The resolution adopted by all the domestic operators will peg the least economy ticket at N50,000.

Airfares hike is long overdue – Airline operators

Meanwhile, some domestic airline’ executive officers have said that the airfares hike is long overdue in Nigeria.

The officers, who made the assertion during separate interviews on Wednesday in Abuja, said some charges to be paid by the airlines have skyrocketed while most maintenance services are done through foreign exchange.

Managing Director of Aero Contractors, Capt. Mahmoud Abdullahi, who said that the airfare hike was overdue, maintained that the fuel price kept increasing while some service providers had increased their tariff by more than 250 per cent.

“The airline fare hike is long overdue, as you are aware of the increase in the fuel price and forex.

“Additionally, of recent, the service providers (Sahcol and Nahco) increased their tariff by 250 to 300 per cent; at the international airport, it is even 500 per cent increase.

“Fares that you see now have always been in the airlines’ inventory. What airlines do is to close lower bucket fare and open next fare bucket, but those lower fares are still in airlines inventory, “ he said.

According to Abdullahi, though airlines may experience low patronage, they have to survive.

The managing director said that every move by the airline was in the interest of safety.

He pointed out that airline income was in naira while most of their expenditure was in forex.

“Regulators play a very good role in pricing. If an airline prices its ticket so low, regulators have to investigate to find out how this airline can meet its obligations with the price that it is charging.

“They have to make sure the airline does not cut corners on maintenance,“ he said.

Abdullahi explained that no airline would intentionally delay or cancel flights, but due to variables including; weather, technical, airport facilities, sunset airport among others.

The Azman General Manager, Mr Suleiman Lawan, who also spoke with NAN, said that it had reached a time when the airfares could no longer remain the same as they used to be.

According to him, aircraft handling is different from other transportation systems.

He noted that tickets prices started from N27, 500 up to N35, 000 before it was increased to a minimum of N50, 000.

“Every day you have to plan for importing spare parts, which is in USD and you cannot get such money from the government. It’s only from the parallel market. Also, A-jet fuel is at a higher price.

“Handlers have increased their charges, even the government has increased its charges. So, based on the above explanation how can airlines survive the situation.

“Apart from that, they have so many responsibilities to handle, such as; payments of salaries, aircraft checks out of Nigeria, which they have to get the money from the same parallel market,“ he said.

Lawan urged the government to assist airlines in some responsibilities.

According to him, the airlines are looking for a way to have a breakthrough not even making profits.

The Max Air Executive Director, Mr Harish Manwani said the airlines ought to increase the fare to cope with the daily expenses to survive.

The executive director noted that Max Air hardly delayed or cancelled flights except for extraordinary weather conditions.

“Even with low turnout, the airline has its flights flown the routes across the country,“ he said.

An Aviation Expert, Group Capt. John Ojikutu Rtd, urged the public and the responsible authorities to have interest in the airlines` makeup areas for the sustenance of their operations.

Ojikutu said he had expected the hike in the airfare about 10 years ago.

“Selling air ticket at a naira rate less than $100 for a flight of one hour makes no economic sense in Nigeria where over 20 years ago $100 was the fare.

“Aviation fuel was being refined in the country around 1999, whereas today we have been importing fuel for well over 10 years.

“Naira exchange has grown steadily from N180 to N360, N400, and now over N500 to a dollar and our airlines are selling tickets at N26,000 or in rare cases N30,000 even when we are importing fuel,“ he said.

Some air travellers at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), who also spoke with NAN, appealed to the Federal Government to intervene in the recent increase of airfares.

According to them, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is responsible for approving the tariffs of fares on the tickets of each operator submitted to it after due consideration.

“ That include the airlines’ operators, airports operator (FAAN) ground handling companies, among others. Determining the cost of fares and charges by operators is the designated responsibility of the NCAA.

  • Why there is airfare hike – FAAN

Why there is airfare hike – FAAN

The Federal Airport Authority (FAAN), has blamed the recent hike in airfare on the increased cost of aviation fuel and exchange rate.

Mr Kunle Akinbode, the Head of Cooperate Communications, Port Harcourt International Airport, stated this on Monday in Port Harcourt.

According to Akinbode, aviation fuel which sold for about N250 per litre, now sells for more than N400 per litre, adding that the hike also includes prices of spare parts which have drastically increased in recent times.

“FAAN and other regulatory agencies in the aviation industry are conscious of the plight of airport users, especially in respect to increased airfare by the various airlines.

“Currently, aviation fuel is selling for over N400 per litre, all aircraft components/parts required for operations are imported, so this has invariably affected airfare.

On how the new rate is affecting patronage by passengers, Akinbode noted that patronage was considerably good irrespective of the high flight rate.

“Nigerians will still fly irrespective of the cost because speed and security is a major advantage of air transportation over the road,” he said.

One of the air passengers, who spoke to NAN, urged the Federal Government to extend its railway infrastructure development to the South-South region of the country.

“If we had an alternative like the railway, just like other parts of the country, a lot of us would prefer to use the train,” Mr Johnson Ikor, an airline passenger said.

FAAN relocates protocol, VIP lounge at MMIA terminal

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said the protocol and VIP lounge at the General Aviation Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) will be relocated.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports Henrietta Yakubu (Mrs.), General Manager, Corporate Affairs of FAAN made this known in a statement on Friday.

According to Yakubu, the relocation is part of efforts to expand infrastructure at the Zulu wing of the terminal and improve quality service delivery.

Yakubu stated that the relocation will be temporary till the end of the project, and that the expansion project will only hamper passenger facilitation minimally at the terminal.

She further stated that normal passenger check-in will not be affected in any way and that the Authority is already making arrangements for temporary spaces to be used as Protocol and VIP lounges, while the project is being executed.

The statement reads: “As part of efforts to improve on infrastructure and service delivery at the General Aviation Terminal, Lagos, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is set to expand the Zulu wing of the terminal.

“The expansion project, which will commence any moment from now will only hamper passenger facilitation minimally at the terminal, as normal passenger check-in will not be affected in any way.

“However, the Protocol and VIP lounge at the terminal will be affected, as the facilities will be relocated temporarily till the end of the project, since major construction works will be carried out in that axis of the terminal.

“Meanwhile, the Authority is already making arrangements for temporary spaces to be used as Protocol and VIP lounges, while the project is being executed.

“When the expansion project is completed, the terminal would have been enhanced in terms of capacity, aesthetics and passenger comfort, as the expected and expanded new lounges will be twice what is presently on ground.

“The Authority will like to appeal to passengers and other airport users to please be patient and bear with us for any inconvenience, while the project will last.

“We will continue to give more updates on the project, as the need arises”.

  • Customs personnel destroy security gate at Lagos Airport

Customs personnel destroy security gate at Lagos Airport

Some officials of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) at Hajj/Cargo terminal Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, have been alleged to engaged in the breaking of Airport security by forcefully opening the security gate at the cargo terminal.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), through its spokesperson, Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, in Lagos on Monday.

It said the Customs personnel shoved aside aviation security personnel on duty at the gate before carrying out the breach.

Yakubu said that the incident happened under the watch of the Comptroller of the Command, Dan Galadima, who was in his car when the incident occurred.

“At about 17:45hrs on Thursday, Jan. 20, while the AVSEC officers on day duty at Gate 3 were profiling a NAHCO vehicle that wanted to access the Security Restricted Area (SRA) via gate 3,

“The Customs Area Comptroller for Hajj and Cargo Terminal suddenly emerged and pulled off behind the NAHCO vehicle that was being attended to and CSC Agunbiade, a customs officer on the Area Comptroller’s entourage, later shoved aside the AVSEC officer at the gate,

“Forcefully took over the gate and opened the gate for the Comptroller and his escorts to forcefully access the security restricted Area via the gate.

“While accessing the gate, the armed escorts to the Comptroller threatened to beat up the AVSEC officers at the gate if they dare resist their assault and breach of security,” FAAN alleged.

The airport authority however noted that personnel of the NCS, who bear arms, are in the habit of flagrant disobedience to security measures in the airport with threat to deal with AvSec personnel who are not armed.

“This blatant abuse of the privilege of bearing firearms by the NCS has become a recurrent threat to the Safety and Security of our Staff and our operations,” FAAN said.

The airport authority however called on stakeholders in the airport environment to obey aviation security regulations even as it resolves existing challenges.

“While we keep on working to resolve all our challenges decisively, we hereby urge all stakeholders to please respect our mandate by being of disciplined and professional conduct in the interest of national security and operational safety,” FAAN appealed.

  • FAAN clears air on alleged explosion, attack on Maiduguri Airport

FAAN clears air on alleged explosion, attack on Maiduguri Airport

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has debunked reports that an explosion rocked the Maiduguri airport in Borno State.

The General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Henrietta Yakubu, in a statement on Saturday said the information was false as there was neither an explosion nor any attack at the airport.

“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) hereby wishes to notify passengers and the general public that there was neither an explosion nor intrusion at the Maiduguri airport,” the statement read in part.

“The airport was not targeted, and is not under any attack whatsoever”.

FAAN, therefore, assured air travellers that it remains committed to its core values of safety, security and comfort.

While there was indeed an explosion early Saturday, however, explosive incident occurred only at a residential estate in Maiduguri.

The mortar bomb was said to have exploded at the 1,000 Housing estate, located along the Maiduguri-Damaturu expressway.

At least 12 houses were affected, but no loss of life has been recorded.

BREAKING: FAAN announces closure of MMIA departure drop off zone

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says there will be a temporary closure of the regular drop off zone at the departure frontage of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

Mrs Henrietta Yakubu, FAAN General Manager, Corporate Affairs, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.

Yakubu said it became necessary to notify passengers, airport users, stakeholders and the public that the closure takes effect from Oct. 6.

She said the temporary closure was to allow for the completion of the ongoing canopy installation works at the concourse of the old international building.

“However, to ease vehicular and human facilitation around the area, the authority has temporarily opened the drop off zone of the new international terminal to serve airport users, while the project lasts,” she said.

Yakubu said that covered walkways had been put in place to link the old and new terminal.

She said that the authority would also open the new departure bridge to serve as an exit to motorists.

“We appeal to airport users to bear with us while the project is being completed.

“We will like the passengers and other stakeholders to comply with directives from security and traffic agents deployed to ensure orderliness,” she said.
