    FAAN owes MMA2 over N200bn- Bi-Courtney

Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, operator of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos Terminal Two, has revealed that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria owes the company over N200bn.

This was said in a statement signed by its spokesman, Mikail Mumuni, in response to the Federal Government’s earlier claim that Bi-Courtney was owing the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, had stated that the ministry would begin to strengthen its efforts to recover the over N37bn owed by airlines in the country and cited Bi-Courtney Limited as owing about N13bn.

Bi-Courtney’s statement read in part, “On the contrary, it is FAAN that owes Bi-Courtney over N200bn by depriving it of its legitimate earnings over the past 14 years.”

Mumuni explained that FAAN had been competing with BASL in running the domestic terminal through the opening and operating of the General Aviation Terminal which is a flagrant breach of the concession agreement.

He further said the N14bn debt mentioned by the Minister was not consistent with the demands of FAAN.

“BASL in line with the dispute resolution process contained in the agreement had an arbitration award in its favour. It also got the judgement of a High Court, six Court of Appeal judgements and a Supreme Court judgement, all in its favour and sustained the monetary award,

“The N14bn debt mentioned by the Minister is totally inconsistent with the demand by FAAN, the body which has been liaising with BASL. Their last demand was about N1bn, which was promptly responded to by BASL stating categorically that there was no such debt.”

The spokesperson further said BASL is a law-abiding company which pays up its bills when due.

“We believe that Minister was not properly briefed by FAAN as we also pay our electricity bills as and when due. We equally provide elaborate security at the Terminal which has continued to attract commendation from stakeholders. ”

FAAN, airlines flouting rights of people with disabilities, Reps allege

The House of Representatives has accused the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and airline operators of violating the rights of Persons Living with Disabilities at the airports across the country.

The legislator stated that special facilities were not available at the airports to ease usage by the PWDs.

A member of the House, Miriam Onuoha, had at the plenary on Wednesday moved a motion titled ‘Need to Investigate the Alleged Violation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and Private Airline Operators,’ which the House unanimously adopted.

While moving the motion, Onuoha said, “The House notes that the high rate of discrimination and harassment of Persons Living with Disabilities by airlines is becoming alarming and is telling bad on the image of the country, and it is a known fact that Nigerian citizens living with disabilities constitute one of the poorest socially-excluded and marginalised groups Nigeria.”

The lawmaker stated that among the major notable provisions of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities Prohibition Act, 2018 were Sections 1 and 14, which prohibit any form of discrimination against persons with disabilities.

She said in a world where everyone sought equal opportunity, irrespective of status, “it is disheartening that two years after the enactment of the Act, persons with disabilities are still being treated with disdain and discriminated against by the airline regulator and some operators/carriers.”

Onuoha said, “The House is cognisant of the fact that disability itself is a burden with its attendant consequences on persons with disabilities, hence the actions of the herein mentioned airlines are like punishing the person twice, which can be described as double jeopardy.

“The House is informed of the claims by one Dr Chike Okogwu who is living with disability, that on December 21, 2020, Dana Air barred him from boarding its aircraft after he had obtained a boarding pass, on the ground that ‘a new policy forbids carrying passengers with wheelchairs.’

“The House is desirous of ensuring that the rights of persons living with disability are not infringed owing to their vulnerabilities.”

Following the adoption, the House urged the germane agencies to provide functional disability desks to ease the sufferings of PWDs at all airports in Nigeria, while also urging airline operators, in collaboration with FAAN, to provide relevant assistive devices for such persons at the airports.

The House further directed the Committee on Disabilities to investigate the allegation of the discrimination against persons with disabilities, with particular reference to the allegation of Dr Chike Okogwu against Dana Airline and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has advised air travellers in the country on what to do to avoid the unpleasant experiences associated with missing their flights.

FAAN addressed the advisory to all air travellers, particularly those who travel using the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The airports authority advised passengers to get to the airport early enough so as to complete their check in procedures in good time, and avoid the unpleasant experiences associated with missing their flights.

FAAN in a statement released by Henrietta Yakubu (Mrs.), General Manager, Corporate Affairs stated that the advice became necessary as passengers are likely to go through a little delay at the entrance to the terminals.

BREAKING: Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport resumes international flights

The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), located in the ancient city of Kano in the Northern part of Nigeria has resumed international flights.

TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) made this known with the arrival of a Ethiopian Airlines international flight.

MAKIA is one of Nigeria’s oldest international airports. Apart from being a major transit point for the annual Muslim Haji to Mecca, MAKIA is a major connection point for air travellers going from Northern Nigeria to different parts of the world.

In the 1980s, the airport was named after a prominent Kano-born Nigerian statesman, Mallam Aminu Kano, a nationalist, politician and dogged fighter for the poor masses in the country.

However, with the outbreak of the dreaded Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the FG in 2020 shut the international wing of the airport as part of efforts to curtail the spread of the virus.

TNG reports international flights resumed at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport with the arrival of a Ethiopian Airlines flight on Tuesday.

  • Attack: We won’t shutdown Kaduna Airport- FAAN MD

Attack: We won’t shutdown Kaduna Airport- FAAN MD

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) says it will not shutdown the Kaduna International Airport, in spite of Saturday’s attack on its workers.

Its Managing Director, Capt. Hamisu Yadudu, made the clarification during an oversight visit by the Senate Committee on Aviation to various airport agencies in Lagos.

Yadudu said the management of FAAN, Lagos State Government and the various security agencies would not relent in their efforts at ensuring the safety of human and equipment at all the nation’s airports.

He said FAAN had already beefed up security networks in all the nation’s airports.

According to him, the current attack will not discourage FAAN from clamping down on any heinous crime anywhere within the sector.

“This incident is entirely different from closing down the airport. It is a security concern that we have at our staff quarters.

“A lot of our staff do not even live in these quarters. If there is need for us to close it, we will close it, but this is even far away from it.

“There is no need for that drastic action; just small percentage of our members of staff stay in the staff quarters; the rest are all living in the town.

“You can see that the staff quarters are fenced. We are taking appropriate measures, but like I said, we just have to improve to counter these challenges.

“Though, the fence was broken, but somehow, somewhere, things happened, and now it is time for us to counter as we have been doing always,” he said.

Yadudu insisted that FAAN had since 2020 further beefed up security at the various airports across the country, which he said had foiled attacks in the sector.

Responding, Sen. Smart Adeyemi, Chairman of the Committee, regretted the sordid security challenges that had pervaded the country in recent times.

Adeyemi, however, called on all to embrace local government policing.

The committee chairman said that Nigeria, as a federating unit, should not shy away from taking a decisive action to tackle the menace.

He said that in spite of increase in the population of the country over the years, the security architecture remained the same, while Nigeria was faced with porous borders.

Adeyemi called for the restructuring of the entire country in a bid to address the various security challenges confronting it, wondering why some continued to kick against restructuring.

The committee chairman said that agitation for restructuring would not lead to secession of the country, as being claimed in some quarters.

Adeyemi said that the time had come for Nigeria to look at, not just at state police, but a local government policing.

This, he said, was the factor behind the effective security system of the U.S.

“There is a need for us to develop new security architecture for Nigeria; our population has increased and we are still faced with porous borders.

“Nigeria is not a clear cut federal system. I don’t know how to describe this country; federal system or unitary system?

“But, I do know that Nigeria is said to be a federation and all nations where federalism is practiced, we do not run a unitary system of policing.

“I think the time has come for Nigeria to evolve a system that will appreciate the size of the nation and the diversities.

“You don’t recruit a graduate that graduated from the University of Maiduguri, for instance, and you post him to Lagos to come and police.

“He doesn’t know the system and the areas. So, criminals can take advantage of that,” Adeyemi said.

Also, Capt. Fola Akinkuotu, the Managing Director of NAMA, appealed to the Federal Government to improve aviation security across the airports in the country.

Akinkuotu said this would further protect aviation infrastructure across the country.

He said that almost 24 hours after kidnappers abducted its staff, five family members and three other persons at the Kaduna Airport, their abductors were yet to make contact with the agency.
