COVID-19: Security guard killed for asking customer to put on face mask

Three family members have been charged with the fatal shooting of a Michigan Family Dollar store security guard who denied entry to a customer who was not wearing a state-mandated face mask, officials have said.

43-year-old Calvin Munerlyn was shot in the head on Friday at the store, north of downtown Flint, and later died in hospital, said Michigan State Police Lieutenant David Kaiser on Monday.

Mr Munerlyn had told the daughter of Sharmel Teague, aged 45, that she had to leave the store on Friday because she was not wearing a mask, said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton.

Ms Teague was charged alongside her husband, Larry Teague, aged 44, and their son, Ramonyea Bishop, aged 23, with first-degree premeditated murder and gun charges.

“From all indications, Mr. Munerlyn was simply doing his job in upholding the Governor’s Executive Order related to the COVID-19 pandemic for the safety of store employees and customers,” Mr Leyton said in the statement.

According to the prosecutor, witnesses at the dollar store have since identified Mr Bishop and Mr Teague as the two men shot Mr Munerlyn.

Surveillance video at the store confirmed that Ms Teague had argued with the security guard, who then told her the 45-year-old to leave after her daughter had been told to do the same.

The woman immediately left the scene in an SUV, before the same car returned around 20 minutes later, said prosecutors.

Two men – identified as Mr Bishop and Mr Teague – entered the store, before the husband shouted at Mr Munerlyn for disrespecting his wife, said the statement.

The son, Mr Bishop, was later identified as the man that allegedly shot the security guard.

Mr Teague was also charged with violating Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer’s executive order which mandates everyone inside stores to wear face coverings, said Mr Leyton.

The mother has been arrested but police are still looking for the husband and son.

No information has been released about the daughter, who has not been charged in the shooting.

“It is important that the governor’s order be respected and adhered to, and for someone to lose their life over it is beyond comprehension,” Leyton said earlier on Monday in a statement.

  • COVID-19: Osun Assembly bars workers, visitors without facemask

The Osun House of Assembly has made the use of facemask compulsory for the state assembly workers and visitors, saying that those without facemasks would be denied entry into the complex.

Mr Timothy Owoeye, the Speaker of the Assembly gave the warning in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Kunle Alabi on Tuesday in Oshogbo.

The speaker said the decision was sequel to the relaxation of the lockdown in the state.

Owoeye said the decision was reached after an executive session of the Assembly.

He added that putting on of face masks among other precautionary measures in and around the assembly was sacrosanct to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said that the use of simple cloth face coverings would slow the spread of Coronavirus and help people, who may have the virus and did not know it, from transmitting to others.

He said that the major criteria for accessing the state assembly complex henceforth would be the facemask, saying the step taken by the state parliamentarians would assuage the fear of contracting the virus, as the assembly resumed full legislative activities.

“As we are all aware that the assembly has resumed fully for legislative activities with very few senior cadre of workers in spite of the ravaging Coronavirus.

“This was borne out of the need to support government in the fight against the pandemic.

“The lead agenda of the 7th Assembly is quality legislation that will impact the lives of Osun people, in order to assuage the fear of people contracting the virus while we resumed.

“It has become imperative that everyone coming to the assembly must wear face mask. It is going to be, no face mask, no entry.

“It is the resolution of the assembly that if everybody wears a face mask, we will be mutually protecting each other.

“Wearing a face covering is just one additional step that we can take to stop the spread of the virus, but it is not a replacement for other important protective measures, such as washing hands and social distancing,” he said.

The speaker charged residents of the state not to trivialise matters associated with the containment of community transmission of the virus and that all hands must be on deck to ensure that COVID-19 pandemic was brought to an end.

With the outbreak and spread of the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) across the globe, face masks have become a trend redefining the fashion industry.

While there have been debates on the effectiveness of face masks in protecting people against the dreaded virus, this has not stopped governments from making face masks compulsory among prerequisites for lifting lockdowns.

With the lifting of lockdowns, given compulsion to use face masks, people have devised several ways to make face masks fashionable. This might even make face masks a new popular fashion trend long after COVID-19.

    Beware of unwashed face masks

Meanwhile, a tailor, Miss Peace Ayodeji on Thursday in Ilorin advised the public to ensure proper washing of handmade face masks before use.

Ayodeji gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on mass production of face masks.

She said handmade face masks had become a booming business in the country, but warned the public against using face masks not properly made and to also wash before use.

According to the tailor, different types of handmade face masks are being sold around the country and the public are desperately buying.

“COVID-19 has begun to spread at community levels, we need to be careful when purchasing face masks in order not to fall victim of contaminated masks.

“So many people will try on the handmade masks before buying to know its fitting, and in so doing, increases the risk of contaminating the masks which will lead to further spread of the virus.

“I will like for tailors to make the straps adjustable and also make it in sizes with tags, they should also make sure people don’t touch the masks unnecessarily.

“And people should also make sure to wash the masks before wearing. Please if possible, do not try the mask on before washing.

“I have also heard that some tailors have started using clothing materials that have become rags in their stores.

“I want to plead with you to make money with the fear of God. Stop hurting your fellow humans, let us always do what is right, use pure and new cotton materials for the masks,” she said.

The tailor, however, appealed to the government to ensure strict measures against production of unsafe masks in the country.

  • German state to fine face mask violators up to 5,000 euros

German state to fine face mask violators up to 5,000 euros

The Southern German State of Bavaria on Friday said arrangement had been concluded to impose fine of up to 5,000 euros (or 5,393 dollars) for violating anti-coronavirus mask rules.

The highest penalty is reserved for shop owners who do not ensure that their employees are wearing the required mouth-and-nose coverings, measures set to come into effect on Monday.

People who go into shops or travel on public transport without such a mask will face fines of 150 euros, as set out in an updated catalogue of fines.

Meanwhile, all the 16 Germany’s federal states had since made face coverings mandatory in public to varying degrees in a bid to reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus.

In Bavaria, Germany’s worst-hit state, with almost 40,000 cases of infection and more than 1,500 deaths, the rules apply to anyone aged 6 and above. A scarf is also permitted as a face covering.

However, in all, there had been around 150,000 cases recorded in Germany with 5,265 deaths.

The country had gradually commenced easing of restrictions, with retailers allowed to re-open and some pupils gradually returning to school, though Chancellor Angela Merkel cautioned that the country’s progress in fighting the virus was still fragile.
