  • Facebook co-founder, Eduardo Saverin becomes Singapore’s richest person

Facebook co-founder, billionaire Eduardo Saverin, who became a Singapore resident after renouncing his U.S. citizenship in 2012, has been announced the island-nation’s richest person.

35 years Saverin, who is estimated to worth of $10.1 billion (net), edged past property siblings Robert & Philip Ng, who have occupied the top spot as Singapore’s richest since 2010 and have an estimated fortune of $10 billion.

The Facebook co-founder has enjoyed a boost to his wealth from rising shares of Facebook, in which he continues to hold a minority stake.

Since Forbes Asia’s compilation of Singapore’s 50 Richest in August, when the Brazilian-born entrepreneur was ranked at No.2 with $9.3 billion, Facebook’s stock is up by close to 13%, according to Forbes.

According to Forbes, while Saverin derives most of his wealth from the social media firm, he is now a venture capitalist with a slate of investments in Southeast Asia and beyond.

“This week, for example, his B Capital Group, together with business legend Ratan Tata and others, invested in MSwipe Technologies, an Indian fintech firm,” Forbes stated.

  • Shell, Facebook, Google, Apple, other 96 best places to work in 2018

Fastest growing jobs and recruiting website, Glassdoor, has ranked employees choice best places to work in 2018.

According to Glassdoor, the ranking system is based on “a proprietary awards algorithm”, which is designed to calculate the “quantity, quality, and consistency of company reviews submitted by employees between November 1, 2016, and October 22, 2017”.

While Facebook has become the best place to work in America, Cupertino-based tech giant Apple tumbled to number 84 from 36th position last year, and Shell ranks at number 95, Glassdoor’s 2018 list of best places to work reveals.

Apple still remains a highly rated employer – with 4.3 out of 5 rating by Glassdoor – but other tech giants like Google, World Wide Technology, Yahoo, and VMware are way ahead in the listings.

Global management consulting firm Bain & Company is the second best place to work, followed by Boston Consulting Group, In-N-Out Burger and Google.

“It’s clear employees love working at Facebook. What we really see them appreciate most is the company’s mission-driven culture, transparent leadership and the fact that their work literally impacts the lives of billions of people worldwide,” Glassdoor CEO Robert Hohman said in a statement.

When it comes to “cons” for working at Apple, several employees who anonymously reviewed the company on Glassdoor said the iPhone maker is “strapped for resources” and “offers a poor work-life balance”.

“Office space is very sparse, bring your own tea and snacks kind of a deal. Lunch isn’t free, although dinner is. Nobody is going to pat you on the back for your work, and you’re expected to advance your own career, or find the mentorship you need,” one Apple employee wrote on Glassdoor.

SAP is at 11th spot, Salesforce at 15th, LinkedIn at 21th, Adobe at 31th, Microsoft at 39th and SpaceX is at 50th place in Glassdoor’s listing.

  • Family delight: Facebook announces Messenger Kids

Facebook has announced the introduction of Messenger Kids, a new app that makes it easier for kids to safely video chat and message with family and friends when they can’t be together in person.

“Millions of parents are part of Messenger community and they asked us for controllable solutions that let them message with their children.

“We heard that they were looking for better apps for their children to use and from there, we worked directly with parents and kids along with experts in child development, online safety and children’s media to help build our first app for kids,” Facebook said in a statement.

TheNewsGuru reports Messenger Kids is a standalone app that lives on kids’ tablets or smartphones but can be controlled from a parent’s Facebook account.

Whether it’s using video chat to talk to grandparents, staying in touch with cousins who live far away, or sending mom a decorated photo while she’s working late to say hi, Messenger Kids opens up a new world of online communication to families.

Messenger Kids is full of engaging and interactive features for kids to connect with the people they love.

Once their account is set up by a parent, kids can start a one-on-one or group video chat with parent-approved contacts.

The home screen shows them at a glance who they are approved to talk to, and when those contacts are online.

“In addition to video chat, kids can send photos, videos or text messages to their parent-approved friends and adult relatives, who will receive the messages via their regular Messenger app.

“And, a library of kid-appropriate and specially chosen GIFs, frames, stickers, masks and drawing tools lets them decorate their content and express their personalities,” the statement read.

Parents are in full control of who their child interacts with on Messenger Kids; so, parents have nothing to worry about.

Parents can use their main Facebook app to control kids’ accounts and contacts through the Messenger Kids Controls panel.

At this time, Messenger Kids is available in the App Store for iPad, iPod touch and iPhone devices for users in the United States, and will be coming to Amazon App Store and Google Play Store in the coming months.

Every child account on Messenger Kids must be set up by a parent.

The social media giant said more than half of the people working at the site in central London will focus on engineering, making it Facebook’s biggest engineering hub outside the United States.

TheNewsGuru reports the London office will also house Facebook’s first in-house start-up incubator, called LDN_LAB, designed to help kick-start fledgling British digital businesses.

Nicola Mendelsohn, Facebook’s EMEA Vice President, said the social network was more committed than ever to the UK and supporting the growth of the country’s innovative startups.

“The UK’s flourishing entrepreneurial ecosystem and international reputation for engineering excellence makes it one of the best places in the world to build a tech company,” she said.

  • The only social media account I have is Facebook- Lagbaja declares

Nigerian Afrobeat musician and saxophonist, Lagbaja has declared that he does not have a Twitter and Instagram account. The crooner noted that any account created in his name is fake.

He made this known in a chat with TheNewsGuru.

According to him: “My focus right now is to for motherland to be back. As a musician the way I reach people is by performance. If you see any account on Instagram with my name its fake, If you see any account on Twitter with my name, its fake, it is not me. The only social media account I have is a Facebook page where we post information when we have events coming up. My way of reaching people first and foremost is via performing. An album will come after motherland returns.

“Not that I don’t buy into social media, I buy into the principle but I don’t want anyone doing it on my behalf. Its either I do it myself or its not done. So when you see a post on Facebook that is Lagbaja writing. I don’t like hyping myself, If I don’t hype myself so what do I want to be doing”.

When asked about why he took a break from music, he said: “Good things have been happening. I have been out of the country, when I came back just over a year ago, I decided to reconstruct motherland and that is my focus right now. There has been a huge delay. But when everything is sorted out, we will be back fully with new songs”.

  • Photo: Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, wife welcome second child

The Chief Executive Officer and founder of Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg announced on Monday that his wife, Priscilla Chan, announced the birth of their second child, a baby girl named August.

Mark Zuckerberg expressed his happiness on his Facebook page.

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Monday that his wife, Priscilla Chan, has given birth to their second child, a baby girl named August.

Mark Zuckerberg expressed his happiness on his Facebook page in a letter he wrote to the new baby.

    Dear August,

Welcome to the world! Your mom and I are so excited to see who you will become.

When your sister was born, we wrote a letter about the world we hoped she and now you will grow up in — a world with better education, fewer diseases, stronger communities, and greater equality.

We wrote that with all the advances in science and technology, your generation should live dramatically better lives than ours, and we have a responsibility to do our part to make that happen. Even though headlines often focus on what’s wrong, we still believe these positive trends will win out. We’re optimists about your generation and the future.

But rather than write about growing up, we want to talk about childhood. The world can be a serious place. That’s why it’s important to make time to go outside and play.

You will be busy when you’re older, so I hope you take time to smell all the flowers and put all the leaves you want in your bucket now.

I hope you read your favorite Dr. Seuss books so many times you start inventing your own stories about the Vipper of Vipp. I hope you ride the carousel with Max until you’ve tamed every color horse. I hope you run as many laps around our living room and yard as you want. And then I hope you take a lot of naps. I hope you’re a great sleeper. And I hope even in your dreams you can feel how much we love you.

Childhood is magical. You only get to be a child once, so don’t spend it worrying too much about the future. You’ve got us for that, and we’ll do everything we possibly can to make sure the world is a better place for you and all children in your generation.

August, we love you so much and we’re so excited to go on this adventure with you. We wish you a life of joy, love and the same hope you give us.

    Love,

    Mom and Dad ”

TheNewsGuru.com reports that the couple had, four months ago, disclosed that they would be having a new addition.

Last week, Zuckerberg also announced that he would be taking time off work to attend to family matters.

Mark and Priscilla had their first child about two years ago.

  • Fraudsters using my name to dupe people on Facebook – Audu Ogbeh

Fraudsters using my name to dupe people on Facebook – Audu Ogbeh

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, has raised the alarm that some impersonators have been using his name and photographs to defraud unsuspecting Facebook users.

Ogbeh in a statement by his adviser on media and communications, Olukayode Oyeleye, said despite several warnings, some impersonators have continued to open fake accounts on Facebook in desperate attempt to defraud unsuspecting people.

“An earlier statement, issued on May 3rd, 2017, to warn the public about this scam is hereby re-emphasised, that Chief Ogbeh has no personal Facebook account. Accordingly, all Facebook accounts in his name are fake,” the statement read in part.

The statement regretted that although many such fake accounts have earlier been shut down by Facebook repeatedly on the minister’s request, more have continued to spring up, luring people with phoney offers of agricultural loans, grants and bogus or non-existent government programmes, aiming at defrauding the unsuspecting prospects.

“The only personal social media account Chief Ogbeh currently keeps is a verified Twitter handle @AuduOgbeh. The official verified Twitter account of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also is @FmardNg,” it said.
  • Discussion continues: Facebook launches Groups for Pages

In its bid to provide a platform for communities to hold discussions on specific areas, Facebook on Wednesday added a new feature called Groups for Pages.

The feature will allow Page admins to create special groups within their Pages to provide a channel of discussion among people and authorities on subjects of common interest.

“We are making ‘Groups for Pages’ available around the world today. If you are an artist, a business, a brand, or a newspaper, you can now create fan clubs and groups centred around your super-fans,” said Chris Cox, Chief Product Officer, Facebook, in a post.

The idea was inspired by two journalists Terri Rupar and Teddy Amenabar at The Washington Post who started a group called ‘PostThis’, where reporters could talk directly to the most avid fans of the paper about how stories come together.

“It was a digital version of letters to the editor, but with ongoing real-time discussions. The fans loved it and we heard from the Post that it was a success, connecting the newsroom with their most avid readers, and their avid readers with each other,” added Cox.

The group is meant for super-fans who wanted to be a part of the day-to-day discussion of the decisions inside the walls of an organisation they care about and to connect with others who felt the same way.

Facebook Founder Mark Zuckerberg also hailed the idea of ‘Groups for Pages’ hoping the new feature will bring people closer together.

“A lot of people follow pages on Facebook for topics they are interested in. So today, we’re making it easier to join groups around the pages you follow,” said Zuckerberg in a Facebook post.

There are over 70 million Pages on Facebook and the company hopes this initiative will help people join meaningful communities.

  • Mark Zuckerberg gets $3.5 billion richer in the last five days

Recent financial reports show that Facebook founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mark Zuckerberg got $3.5 billion richer in the last five days.

This is an outstanding feat considering the fact that there is a global outcry of financial lack in every nook and cranny.

Forbes reports that the shares of Facebook, which have risen nearly 40% since the start of 2017, continue to gain altitude, and that expectations of strong second-quarter earnings, to be announced at the end of the month, has helped drive Facebook stock to an all-time high on Friday.

That surge has further padded the net worth of Mark Zuckerberg, who holds roughly 17% of Facebook’s outstanding shares and a majority of its voting power, to go higher by $3.5 billion richer in the last five days, Forbes said.

Just 33 years old, Zuckerberg is now worth an estimated $66.7 billion – a record high – according to Forbes’ real-time rankings of the world’s billionaires. He is the sixth-richest person on the planet and the only thirty-something to rank in the top 50.

Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 as a 19-year-old student at Harvard; he later dropped out as a sophomore. The business, which began as a small social networking platform for Ivy League universities, now has more than 2 billion monthly active users.

Zuckerberg was not the only technology billionaire to have a lucrative week.

The net worth of Bill Gates, the planet’s wealthiest individual, rose $900 million to an estimated $90 billion. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos also did spectacularly well; his fortune jumped $1.9 billion, to an estimated $85.2 billion. He remains the world’s second-richest person.
