    CORRUPTION: Fake Nigerian lawyer arrested in South Africa

    A 53-year-old Nigerian national, Lawrence Chinagorom Uche, has been arrested in South Africa for allegedly pretending to be a lawyer.

    Uche was arrested last Friday following the execution of a warrant issued by the Vereeniging Magistrates Court in November 2022.

    TheNewsGuru.com (TNG) reports that the suspect appeared in court on Monday, February 13, 2023, and the case was postponed to Friday.

    It was gathered that Uche’s deceit of pretending to be a lawyer in and around courts in the Vaal was exposed by “The Hawks” serious corruption investigation.

    The investigation was prompted by an affidavit submitted by an investigating officer in an alleged rape case,? Hawks spokesperson Captain Lloyd Ramovha said in a statement.

    “The contents of the affidavit were about the constant phone calls the investigator was receiving from the family of the rape accused. The family was reportedly demanding the release of the accused as they had paid money to Uche, who claimed to have paid a portion to the investigator for the case not to proceed.?

    Ramovha said it was believed that other people might have fallen victim to Uche?s scam, which enabled him to steal money from victims under false pretences.

  • Court jails fake lawyer to two years jail term for forgery in Kano

    A Kano State High Court has sentenced a fake lawyer, Hanga Abdullahi, to two years imprisonment for forgery.

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in a statement on Tuesday, said Abdullahi was arraigned before Justice Aisha Mahmud on Friday, when he was pronounced guilty of the four counts levelled against him by the agency.

    At the point of arraignment, the convict reportedly pleaded not guilty to the counts, thereby setting the stage for trial.

    The statement read in part, “In the course of the trial, the prosecution counsel, Musa Isah, called four witnesses and tendered documents that were admitted as exhibits by the court.

    “In his judgment, Justice Mahmud found the defendant guilty on count three but discharged and acquitted him on counts 1, 2 and 4.

    “He was subsequently sentenced to two years’ imprisonment or a fine option of N250,000.

    “Hanga’s journey to prison started when a petitioner alleged that he sold property meant for a specified buyer already named in a document to one of his relations and forged the prepared document to reflect the name of the new buyer. He also converted the proceeds of the sale of the property to his personal use.”

    Police arrest 50-year-old fake lawyer who appeared before Chief Magistrate

    Police have arrested a man identified as Azeez Agboola for allegedly parading himself as a legal practitioner in Ogun State.

    Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, confirmed the arrest of the suspect in a statement on Thursday.

    The 50-year-old suspect, a resident of Oko Afor area of Badagry in Lagos State, was arrested while appearing as a counsel before Chief Magistrate B.I. Ilo at the Chief Magistrate Court in the Agbara of Ogun State.

    According to Oyeyemi, the suspect’s presentation in court aroused the suspicion of the chief magistrate who invited the police to arrest him for proper interrogation, in order to authenticate his claim of being a lawyer.

    “Upon his arrest, the suspect was personally interrogated by the Divisional Police Officer (Agbara Division), Superintendent of Police Dahiru Saleh, and he confessed that though he read law in the university, he has not been called to bar since he has not passed the law school examination,” the statement said.

    In his reaction, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun, Edward Ajogun, ordered that the suspect be charged to court as soon as possible.

    Elsewhere in the state, two students of the same parent were crushed to death in an accident involving a motorcycle and a truck along the Sagamu-Ikorodu Road.

    The spokesman for the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the death of the victims to journalists.

    He explained that the incident occurred at about 7:57am on Thursday and was caused by reckless driving and impatience on the part of the motorcycle rider.

    “There were four students on the motorcycle when the incident happened; three students of Idagba Community High School, Sotubo and Wesley Primary School, Ogijo, with one of them riding the motorcycle conveying him and the others to school,” Akinbiyi said.

    He added, “In an attempt by the motorcyclist to find its way in between two trailers, the motorcycle fell on its side and the rear tyre of one of the trailers ran over them.”

    A 47-year-old suspected fake lawyer, Tajudeen Idris, has been arrested by men of the Ogun State Police Command for posing as a legal practitioner.

    The suspect was arrested on Friday at Magistrates’ Court 6 in the Ifo Local Government Area of the state.

    Idris was said to have appeared before Chief Magistrate I. A. Arogundade in a civil case between one Ifeanyi Chuckwu and Ayo Itori.

    He allegedly claimed to be a counsel from Tajudeen O. Idris & Co. Chambers and was representing one of the parties.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday.

    Oyeyemi said the suspected fake lawyer’s conduct and his manner of presentation before the chief magistrate aroused suspicion about his qualification as a lawyer.

    The PPRO said the suspect’s action prompted the chief magistrate to ask him for the year he was called to the bar, which he claimed to be 2009.

    “But further enquiry revealed that his name was nowhere to be found among those called to the bar in 2009, hence the police were invited.

    “Consequently, the DPO, Ifo Division, CSP Adeniyi Adekunle, detailed his operatives to the scene, where the suspect was apprehended and he is currently undergoing investigation.”

    The PPRO said the Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, had expressed concern over the increase in the number of fake lawyers swindling people of their hard-earned money.

    Ajogun recalled that not less than five cases of fake lawyers had been reported since his assumption of office less than two months ago.

    Officers of Ogun State Police Command have arrested one Tajudeen Olufemi Idris for falsely parading himself as a lawyer and appearing as a defence counsel in court.

    The 47-year-old man was arrested on Friday, 2nd of October 2020 at Magistrate Court 6 in Ifo part of the State while appearing before Chief magistrate I.A Arogundade in a civil case between one Ifeanyi Chuckwu and Ayo Itori.

    He claimed to be a legal counsel from Tajudeen O. Idris & Co Chamber and was representing one of the parties.

    But it was gathered that because of his conduct and presentation, the Chief magistrate became suspicious and this prompted him to ask the supposed lawyer the year he was called to the Bar.

    Though Idris claimed he was called to the Bar in 2009, further enquiry revealed that his name was not in the register of those called to the Bar in that year, hence, police were notified.

    Consequently, the DPO Ifo division, Csp Adeniyi Adekunle detailed his operatives to the court and the suspect was apprehended and he is currently undergoing investigation.

    Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Ajogun has expressed concern about increase in the number of people impersonating legal practitioners to swindle people of their hard earned money.

    The CP recalled that not less than five cases of fake lawyers have been reported since his assumption of office less than two months ago.

    The Commissioner recalled that on 12 of August 2020, 56- year- old Sylvester Ogbagu was arrested at Shagamu while parading himself as lawyer while another fake lawyer, Adedeji Ebenezer was apprehended in the Court premises at Itori on the 5th of August 2020 while appearing for a client as a lawyer.

    He was tried and subsequently sentenced to three years in prison.

    Another fake lawyer Elijah Ayodeji Ojo was also arrested in Ajuwon police station on the 28th of June when he came to solicit for a so called client who was having a criminal matter with the police.

    Likewise, one Lawrence Oyedunu was arrested in Sango Ota while presenting himself as a counsel to a suspect.

    The CP therefore called on the State branch of NBA to put necessary machinery in motion to checkmate the activities of the impersonators.

    He also appealed to those who wish to be a lawyer to take a cue from the determined effort of a traditional ruler in the State, the Towulade of Akinale who at 75 years of age went to law school because of his interest in legal profession.

    Operatives of Ekiti Police Command have arrested a fake lawyer and cyber fraudster for defrauding Miss Buhari Safurat Temitope.

    The fake lawyers identified as Mr. Feranmi Adeyemi was arrested for alleged impersonation and obtaining money under false pretense.

    Adeyemi, who hail from Ayetoro-gbede in Yagba Kogi State, was accused of using dubious means to defraud several persons including Mr. Steve Rose Ayokunle Omisore, Eniosi Funmilayo and madam Oke Bamidele.

    The suspect was said to have posted himself on social media (Facebook) as a legal practitioner under the false pretense of rendering legal services through which his clients were defrauded.

    He equally disguised as the coordinator of an NGO tagged “Total Motivation Network” in Nigeria, to dupe some persons.

    While addressing newsmen in Ado Ekiti on Monday, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Amba Asuquo said the suspect confessed to the crime, noting he will be charged to court after investigation.

    Asuquo, however, advised people to avoid interaction with strange people on social media platforms, as they may become victim to such cyber fraudster.
