Dowen College accuses Sylvester Oromoni’s family of ‘ambush’

Dowen College, Lagos, on Monday alleged before an Ikeja Coroner’s Court that it was ambushed by Mr Sylvester Oromoni Snr, father of a late student of school, Sylvester Oromoni Jnr.

The counsel to Dowen College, Mr Anthony Kpokpo, made the allegation at the start of the testimony of Oromoni Snr. after some documents, videos and audio recording were tendered in evidence.

Kpokpo said that the documents, videos and audio were withheld from other parties in the suit all the while to create shock.

The evidence include documents, photographs, audio recordings, videos and battered luggage of the deceased.

They were tendered by counsel to the Oromoni family, Mr Andrew Efole.

Video and photo slideshows of late Sylvester Oromoni Jnr. was played at the inquest.

One of the videos was Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) of Nov. 23, 2021, which showed the late student arriving home from school.

In the footage, he could not walk into his home from the vehicle that brought him.

He had to be given a piggyback into his home.

A voice speaking over the recording said: “This is my brother when he was brought home from school. I had to call the security man to come and carry my brother.

“I do not know where Mr Adeyemi got his facts that he (Oromoni Jnr.) walked by himself.”

Other footages showed the late student crying in severe pain, being unable to walk and being aided by two female relatives.

Other videos showed him in various states of pain and discomfort.

There was an audio recording of Oromoni Snr. enquiring from late student’s classmate about what happened to his son.

Following the playing of the footages and audio, Kpokpo described tendering of the documents as an “intent to ambush the other side”.

“The content of this flash affirms our earlier assertion that it was deliberately kept away from us.

“The videos that we just watched and the managed audio we listened to had always been in the custody of the family of the deceased and was brought at this stage for shock value.

“In the circumstances of what we are seeing, we are constrained to go and view all the materials put before us.

“I pray that my learned friend is kind enough to extend the curtesy to us as we did to them so that we will be appropriately prepared to cross-examine the witness to move forward,” he said.

Counsel to Lagos State Government, Mr Akin George, also described the development as ‘ambush’.

“It will not be out of place to say the counsel on the other side acted in the nature of ambush,” he said.

Mr Godwin Omoaka (SAN), counsel to one of the accused Dowen College students, said that other parties to the proceedings were blindsided.

“My learned friend (Efole) ought to have made the documents available to us all this while.

“It is only appropriate that we see those videos and watch them, else, it will impact on the issue of fair hearing to us,” he said.

The Coroner Mr Mikhail Kadiri, adjourned the evidence of Oromoni Snr. until Feb. 14.

“This is to enable parties to study the documents and videos,” he said.

Proceedings were, however, adjourned until Feb. 8, for the testimony of a pathologist.

NAN reports that it was alleged that the 12-year-old Oromoni Jnr. died on Nov. 30, 2021 from injuries sustained in an attack by five senior students of Dowen College for refusing to join a cult.

It was also alleged that he was forced to drink an obnoxious substance by his attackers.

Advice by Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions released on Jan. 4, however, disputed the allegation, stating that two autopsies revealed the cause of the student’s death as acute bacterial pneumonia due to severe sepsis.

La Liga: Bale told not to leave Madrid through the backdoor

Real Madrid forward, Gareth Bale’s family are urging him to leave Santiago Bernabeu the right way.

Marca says it’s clear that Bale’s career as a Real Madrid player will be over at the end of the season, yet with the return of Carlo Ancelotti, the Welsh international has been allowed to live in peace.

There has been the occasional moment of action in the first-team, whilst there is complete respect between the Italian coach and the player.

It is this relationship that has opened the door for Bale to leave the club in the right way, as a player who arrived from abroad and won four Champions Leagues, four Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, two LaLiga Santander titles, three Copa del Rey titles and three Supercopa de Espana titles.

The message from his family and friends was a request to leave the Spanish club, but to do so on his own terms, not via the ignominy of the back door.

His family feel that he can’t simply leave Madrid silently, as if he were just another run of the mill player, but instead he has to leave as someone who achieved everything possible with the Spanish giants.

Diploma holder recorded jumping into lagoon, family searches for body

A certain National Diploma certificate holder, identified as Lekan Odunare, has reportedly jumped into the Lagos Lagoon in an attempt to commit suicide.

The victim, whose body had yet to be recovered, jumped into the lagoon in the Epe area around 10am on Tuesday.

In a video circulating on social media, Lekan could be seen sitting on the rails of a bridge before plunging into the waters.

Before he dived in, a man recording the scene was heard interrogating him

Lekan, who looked distraught, did not answer any of the questions before jumping into the lagoon.

Many social media users, however, questioned why the man behind the camera made no effort to save him.

A source, who claimed to know the victim said his remains had yet to be found.

He said, “The boy is like a younger brother to me. I saw the news first on Facebook and I called his elder brother to ask if it was true and he said yes. When I asked if they had found the body, he said they had not found it but that the people that were around the area said he died after jumping into the lagoon.

“I can’t say why he jumped into the lagoon; probably he was depressed or something. He has finished his national diploma and was learning surveying; I don’t know why he would jump into the lagoon.”

The deceased’s brother, Usman, said he never opened up about anything disturbing him.

He said, “I don’t even understand the situation. He just wished to do that to himself. He used to be depressed once in a while, but at least he should have come out and spoken to someone. If there was anything bothering him, he should have talked but that was how he chose to live his life. It has not been easy for our mother, but she will get over it as time goes on.

“We have not seen his body; we are searching for his body and hoping he will float to the shore because the lagoon is deep and nobody can enter into it.”

  • Dealing with Mental Illness in the family – Hope Eghagha

One of the most difficult health challenges to deal with when it strikes in the family, or a group is mental illness. In one of our webinars, a specialist spoke on ‘Dealing with unseen illnesses’ because some mental illnesses are not seen! Can you see a mind that is troubled as we see the symptoms of malaria? Mental illness is when a person’s thinking, feeling, behaviour or mood becomes affected negatively by clinical depression, anxiety disorder, psychotic disorders, impulse control, or substance abuse. Sometimes the effect is visible. A mentally ill patient could simply go naked and run amok. In other cases, it is hidden for years, managed by the victim because they do not understand what is happening. Do you live permanently in fear, expecting the worst to happen anytime? Are your thoughts always negative? Are you paranoid about how your parents died and how you may die as they did? Do you think of death all the time like an obsession? Are you permanently sad, unable to laugh and enjoy the common things that people do? Are you in permanent grief over the loss of a loved one? Have you been unable to move on since your last breakup which took place years before? Are you having nightmares from a traumatic experience? You may need the help of a therapist.

In some cases, especially in old age, there is dementia whereby a person forgets who they are and cannot recognize family members. Sadly, mental illness is widely misunderstood, mystified, treated with suspicion and superstition and stigmatisation. Indeed, once you tell most family members or friends that you think they ought to see a clinical psychologist, they put up a big wall of defence. Am I mad, is the question they ask? Madness for them is the only reason that someone should see a psychiatrist. This is not correct.

Yet, mental illness is highly present in all societies. It comes in different forms. It can affect anybody, no matter the class, background, religion, or race. In the last three odd years since we started work as an interventionist NGO (Mind and Soul Helpers’ Initiative- MASHI) on mental health, using professionals to counsel and refer people, we have come to see how widespread, how misunderstood, how poorly appreciated it is in society. Today, I write not as a professional on mental health. I write as an advocate for the full recognition of and provision for mental health services in the country. I write to educate the public on why they should not hesitate to consult a clinical psychologist or a psychiatrist when a person has a mental illness, that is, when a person breaks down mentally. The professionals are not allowed to advertise their work.

Often, there are warnings, yet we ignore them. Do you have a son or daughter or cousin who lock themselves up in the room, avoid the rest of the family and remain moody throughout the day or week or month? That young man who returns from school a different person? That lady who is who suddenly said that school is not for her, that she would rather be a preacher. That young man who becomes violent in the hostel or in the house, screaming all manner of things. That young man or woman who is troubled by thoughts of suicide, thoughts of ending it all whether by jumping in front of a moving vehicle or taking the notorious sniper insecticide.

In the last three years, we have encountered too many persons who are down today because of trauma from the past. Why do some fathers or uncles like abusing daughters sexually from a tender age? What is attractive in a five-year-old child to a father, a full-grown man? Why should a father or a brother sexually abuse a child of five years old till she gets to fifteen? Why do some mothers keep silent even after catching their husbands molesting a girl child? Many years after the experience, some ladies start feeling the effect of the trauma and go through mental illness for the rest of her life. Some of the ladies are scarred or destroyed for life. Do you want to destroy that beautiful daughter of yours for life because of your sexual peccadilloes? Think twice daddy, think twice.

Sexual abuse is one among many. There is verbal abuse. There is physical abuse. Some parents like berating their kids, calling them all kinds of names. What such parents do not know is the indelible pain or sore such an experience leaves on the child. ‘You, ugly fool! That child grows up believing the insult of the mother or father or uncle. Some do not realise that even a baby can be traumatised. This could affect them forever.

The truth is that any behaviour which we do not understand should be brought to the attention of health authorities. First line of course is the general hospital from where a doctor could refer the person concerned to a specialist. Some people are just scared or reluctant about taking their family members to a psychiatrist. What will people say they always ask? They will say there is madness in our family. It is not what people say that matters. It is the health of the person that is crucial.

When a person in a family has mental health illness, family members need to show understanding. Some of the complaints, like sudden fear of doom, hot flushes in the body, seeing a dead mother daily, creeping sensations, fear that they could fall, vibrations and sensations in some parts of the body, are real to the sick person. It is not enough to say ‘snap out of it. They need help. We have encountered families who treat dementia patients with scorn and derision. One family accused the elderly woman of witchcraft. We must remember that the person concerned is not in control of his mind. True, it is difficult even trying to handle a family member who keeps returning to hard drugs or alcohol after being treated. It is double jeopardy to accuse a victim of panic attacks of stupidity or foolishness. It is double jeopardy to accuse a clinically depressed person of wickedness or deliberately disturbing the family.

Mental illness is like any other ailment. If one has a bone problem they go to an orthopaedic surgeon. If it is pregnancy, they go to a gynaecologist. Indeed, there is a type of mental illness which comes just after a woman gives birth. She should see a specialist. If it is the mind that has a problem, they should see a mind doctor- a psychiatrist. There should be no stigma attached to go to a psychiatrist hospital. A mentally ill person should not be taken to a pastor or a babalawo to cast out spirits. Mental illness is not caused by spirits. There are prescribed medications for treating the mentally ill. Sometimes, it is a long haul, lasting a lifetime. It could also clear within a year or two, depending on the severity of the nature of mental illness.

Finally, let us spread the awareness. Mental illness is not infectious nor is it something to be ashamed of. It is just like any other disease. As the slogan goes, there is no health without mental health. There is not enough information about mental illnesses in the country. There is also too much superstition about mental illness, even among some highly educated people. This therefore is a clarion call to everyone to take their mental health seriously. Traumatic videos and pictures should be avoided. Government should take mental health seriously. At the individual level, seek help if you hear voices.

  • [Devotional] IN HIS PRESENCE: A wise woman builds her home

    By Oke Chinwetalu

    Read: PROVERBS 31:10–31

    Meditation verse:
“that our daughters may be as pillars, sculptured in palace style” (Psalm 144:12).

A pillar is a tall vertical structure of stone, wood, or iron, used as a support for a building. Without a pillar, a building will crumble. We started noticing cracks in the walls of our home about a year and a half after we moved in. The cracks increasingly got worse; we knew we had to do something. We called in a structural engineer who discovered a massive structural defect. The master bedroom upstairs was sitting on the parlour downstairs, without any supporting pillar and it was giving way under the weight. We had to move out of our home so everything in the affected areas could be removed. When the wardrobe was removed, the walls behind had almost split in two. The defect was rectified by erecting two big pillars in the parlour to carry the weight of the room upstairs.

“The wise woman builds her house, but the foolish pulls it down with her hands” (Proverbs 14:1). As a woman, you are a support structure in your home, community, or wherever you find yourself. And not just any kind of pillar; sculptured in palace style, standing out, beautifully adorned. Today’s reading portrays a woman who is a pillar in her home and community. She is a manufacturer, seamstress, importer, realtor, employer, manager, and philanthropist. She is focused on the welfare of her husband, children, staff, and community. She eschews laziness and idleness. Surprisingly, nothing is mentioned about the physical appearance of this woman.

The value of something is not in its beauty but its usefulness. A vessel can be beautiful but completely useless, unable to hold down anything. Your worth is neither determined by your appearance nor the value of your car possessions, but by how useful you are to God and those around you. As gold is purified by passing it through fire, the challenges of life are designed to refine you. You are designed to be a polished pillar in your home, standing firm through the challenges and storms of life and emerging stronger. Are you appropriately positioned as a pillar in your home or, is your home in danger of crumbling?

  • Gunmen kidnap father, two Children, one other family member in Ondo

Gunmen kidnap father, two Children, one other family member in Ondo

A gang of armed men on Sunday evening kidnapped four members of a family, including a father, his two children and another family member at Iju-Itaogbolu in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo state.

The four victims were abducted while travelling from Ado Ekiti to Akure to attend a church programme when they ran to the roadblock mounted by the armed kidnappers.

According to a source, the four victims who were travelling in a Space bus with three other passengers were unlucky as the three other passengers ran away immediately after the vehicle was stopped.

He explained that the vehicle was stopped at a very bad spot very close to a popular Secondary school in the town saying the kidnappers forcefully dragged the father, his two children and the family member into the bush.

He said the armed started shooting into the air to scare the residents of the area while they marched the victims into the forest.

He, however, said men of Amotekun Corps in the state who got wind of the incident chased the hoodlums, but they were said to have escaped into Ekiti state forest with the victims.

The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Funmilayo Odunlami, who could not confirm the abduction of the four family members said the information available is still sketchy, saying it was not too clear whether the incident happened in Ondo or Ekiti State territory.

She, however, said the police from the command had swung into action to investigate the incident.
