Fani-Kayode retracts offensive word on reporter

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has withdrawn the offensive word he used on a Daily Trust reporter.

TheNewsGuru recalls that Fani-Kayode had attacked Eyo Charles, a journalist, who asked him a question at a press conference in Calabar, Cross River last week.

Fani-Kayode, in a statement on Wednesday, said: “I met with my advisors till late last night and I wish to say the following. I hereby withdraw the word “stupid” which I used in my encounter with a journalist in Calabar.

“I have many friends in the media who I offended by losing my cool and using such words. I hereby express my regrets for doing so.”

“I do however wish to state categorically that no threat of physical harm was ever made to the journalist in question and neither did I send anyone to threaten him. Anyone that says otherwise is lying and I challenge them to bring the proof.

“I would never seek to physically harm a journalist. For the last 30 years I have defended and worked with journalists and fought for the right of freedom of expression.

“I am also very close to many in that profession. I would be the last to seek to disparage those that are honorable and noble within its ranks.”

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the International Press Centre (IPC) condemned Fani-Kayode for his outburst.

53-year-old Daily Trust reporter whom Fani-Kayode harassed on national TV breaks silence

…He (Fani-Kayode) called my publisher demanding for my sack shortly after the incident

    …Why I apologised

Eyo Charles, the Daily Trust correspondent who had a bitter encounter with a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, in Calabar, Cross River State, at a press conference has narrated his own side of the story.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that the ex-minister abruptly left the conference after verbally assaulting the reporter, calling him stupid for asking the ex-minister if his tour was being sponsored by any politician or political group.

“What type of stupid question is that? What type of stupid question is that? Bankrolling who? Do you know who you are talking to?” Mr Fani-Kayode has angrily told the reporter.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain in a defense of his widely condemned action said United States President Donald Trump and former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo who appointed him (Fani-Kayode) minister would have responded more harshly to the reporter than he did. Fani-Kayode also said the reporter had apologised and he has moved on.

However, the journalist said he was disorganised from the encounter, which was why he apologised to Mr Fani-Kayode.

Mr Charles explained that he was “more disorganised” when he heard other reporters told him right there that he should not have asked the question.

He said he did not expect the former minister to “suddenly jumped” at him.

“The question was sir, you said you have gone round six or seven states to inspect projects undertaken by those governors, and now you are here in Cross River state, rounding off your one-week visit to Governor Ayade. Who is bankrolling you?” Mr Charles said.

Mr Charles said after the incident a “security aide” to the former minister walked up to him and began interrogating him. He said he had to hurriedly leave the hotel premises.

The former minister, the reporter said, later called his editor in Daily Trust and demanded his sack.

The reporter said he regretted apologising to Mr Fani-Kayode over the incident.

“I am 53, he is not much older than me. I am not a child, I am an adult and I have children,” he said.

VIRAL VIDEO: ‘You are very stupid,’ Fani-Kayode gets furious, attacks journalist on live TV

Former minister of aviation Femi Fani-Kayode last week verbally assaulted Daily Trust’s correspondent, Eyo Charles at a press conference over a question in Calabar, Cross River State.

The PDP chieftain had held a press conference in Cross River State at the end of his tour of states in the South-South region controlled by the party.

The ex-minister in a viral video that got leaked on Tuesday was seen attacking the journalist and calling him stupid for asking the ex-minister if his tour was being sponsored by any politician or political group.

The press conference was held after Fani-Kayode inspected some ongoing projects by Governor Ben Ayade, one of which is the superhighway that would stretch from the Atlantic Ocean in Bakassi to the boundary of Benue State and the proposed deep seaport.

The former minister said the reporter was “very stupid” and that he did not need anyone to bankroll his tour.

“I am saying this on live TV. What type of stupid question is that? Bankrolling who? Do you know who you are talking to? I will not take any questions from this man,” he said.

“What type of insulting question is that? Which bankroll? To do what? Who can give me money for anything? Who do you think you are talking to? Go and report yourself to your publisher? Please don’t insult me here. I don’t want to take any questions from this man.

“I could see from your face before you got here, how stupid you are. Don’t ever talk to me like that. Who do you think you’re talking to. Bankroll who? You think I am one of those ones you… from who, when, how? You have a small mind, very small mind. Don’t judge me by your own standards.

“I have been in politics since 1990. I have been locked up many times by this government. Suffered. I have been persecuted unlike most of the politicians you follow for brown envelope. Don’t ever judge me by that standard. I spend I don’t take and I am not a poor man — I have never been and I will never be.”

At the end of the video, some of the reporter’s colleagues were seen blaming him for asking such a question as well.

Zamfara chiefs resign, protest ”Sadaukin Shinkafi” honour on Fani-Kayode, give emir 24-hour ultimatum to withdraw title

Former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode may lose the traditional title ”Sadaukin Shinkafi” conferred on him by Emir of Shinkafi, Alhaji Muhammad Makwashe of Zamfara state.

The Emir has gotten a 24-hour ultimatum to withdraw the traditional title following the resignation from two top chiefs.

FFK got the title on Monday, July 20 in recognition of his support and contributions to the development of Shinkafi emirate.

Dr Sulaiman Shuaibu Shinkafi who resigned as the Sarkin Shanun Shinkafi and Dr Tijjani Salihu Shinkafi who resigned as ‘Sarkin Marayun Shinkafi’, called on other traditional title holders in Shinkafi emirate to equally resign because Fani Kayode does not deserve the title conferred on him.

According to Dr Suleiman Shuaibu Shinkafi, Fani-Kayode insults and abuse leaders and forefathers of the region at will.

“We the citizens of Shinkafi rejected the title of Sadaukin Shinkafi conferred on Femi Fani Kayode by the Emir of Shinkafi in Zamfara State, Mohammed Isah Maikwashe because he does not deserve the title.

“This is a man known to always disrespect and abuse our leaders and forefathers in the region.

“On this, I resigned the appointment conferred on me by the same emir as Sarkin Shanun Shinkafi and also a colleague, Dr Tijjani Salihu of Danfodio University also resigned as Sarkin Marayun Shinkafi.”

He added that they will be heading to court if the Emir refuses to withdraw the title.

“We are also expecting six additional title holders today who are resigning their titles. This decision is uncalled for and unacceptable, we were not consulted on this and it is null and void.

“After 24 hours if the decision is not reversed, then the emir should expect the wrath of the law and he should also resign.

“We are going to the take to the street for protest against his decision; Kayode doesn’t deserver any title in the North and anyone who tries to give him, we are going to protest against that. Fani-Kayode has no respect for Northern leaders.

“He always disgraces the north, insults our leaders.”

  • Covid-19: Buhari must hold live broadcast on his health – Fani-Kayode

Femi Fani-Kayode has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to conduct a live television broadcast to assure Nigerian people that he is well and that he has not fled the nation’s shores to seek medical treatment elsewhere.

He said the rumours going round were heartbreaking and disheartening and that Nigerians deserved to be reassured that they had not been abandoned midstream and that the President had not been afflicted by Covid-19 or any other debilitating and life-threatening illness.

“We also need to be assured that he is indeed Muhammadu Buhari and not Jubril Al Sudani. To say that it is his style to ignore his people and treat them with contempt at a time of national crisis is disrespectful, disingenuous and downright insulting. The Nigerian people deserve a far better quality of leadership than that.

“If he is too sick to continue as President he should resign and let someone else take over the reigns of power but if he is well enough to continue he should get off his high horse, purge himself of his contempt for our people, come clean and behave like a responsible modern-day leader and not a feudal Arab Sheik or primitive tribal warlord.

“The Nigerian people and indeed the entire world are facing an existential threat and the greatest challenge in their entire history and this is not the time to play games or act as if all is well and that our house is not on fire,” he said on his Facebook page.

According to him, “We need a leader that can inspire, encourage and reassure us and that is strong, healthy, focused, purposeful, decisive, sensitive, compassionate, alive to his responsibilities and forward-thinking.

“We do not need a power-mad, tyrannical, vain and irresponsible megalomaniac and antediluvian relic who has lost touch with reality, who no longer knows who, what or where he is and who is suffering from senility, delusions of grandeur, an identity crisis and the misplaced notion that he is not accountable to God and to the people.”

  • Presidency attacks Fani-Kayode for demanding identity of Italian who brought Coronavirus to Nigeria

President Buhari’s Personal Assistant on Social Media, Lauretta Onochie, has blasted Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, for demanding the identity of the Italian who brought coronavirus to Nigeria.

Fani-Kayode who is a staunch critic of President Buhari’s administration had on Wednesday accused the authorities of hiding the truth about the coronavirus patient who tested positive in Lagos on the 27th of February 2020.

Fani Kayode had said: “The Italian that brought coronavirus into Nigeria has not been named & his picture has not been released to the public.

“The driver that was alleged to have driven him to Abeokuta said he did not do so. The passengers on the plane in which he flew into Nigeria cannot be traced.

“The claim that he was an employee of a company & that he went to their office in Lagos after leaving the airport has proved to be false. Finally, the Lagos state Comm. of Health went to see the Italian without wearing any protective gear.

“Something doesn’t add up in this saga.”

Reacting to the statement made by Fani-Kayode, Lauretta Onochie, who shared a video of a US hospital protecting the identity of a coronavirus patient, described the former minister as Nigeria’s foremost drug addict.

She said: “Privacy is the right of every human. Well or unwell.

“Here are respectful people shielding the identity of a patient.

“Nigeria is keeping the identity of the Italian receiving treatment for COVID-19 infection. But Femi Fani Kayode, Nigeria’s foremost drug addict, wants his identity.”
