Zurich admitted the banana came from the part of the St Jakob Park stadium occupied by their supporters.

“In the match against Basel, a banana was thrown out of FCZ’s fan zone towards FCB player Aldo Kalulu when he went to take a corner.

“The club strongly condemns this racist behaviour and does not tolerate it in any way. There is no room for xenophobia and discrimination in football.

“FCZ has always been committed to diversity and welcomes all people, regardless of their background or religion,” the club said in a statement.

  • Leukaemia: Accolades from team mates, fans as Ikeme quits football

Leukaemia: Accolades from team mates, fans as Ikeme quits football

Praises have been pouring in from various sources for Nigeria and Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, who retired from football on Friday on health grounds.

Former Super Eagles’ number one Ikeme, who started the journey to the Russia 2018 World Cup with the Eagles, was diagnosed with acute leukaemia in July 2017 but entered into complete remission in June.

He announced his retirement in a statement on Wolves website.

I spoke with the doctor and he suggested I should retire, because of the toll the treatment has taken on my body,” Ikeme said.

He thinks it’s what is best for me and I can’t really risk trying to come back, my health is the priority. I want to be here for my children, family and friends. In the grand scheme of things with my life in danger, it’s the minimum price I have to pay to spend the rest of my time with my family.”

However, praises poured in for the 32-year-old ex-Wolves keeper with his fellow keepers hailing him.

Having been at the club since the age of 14, Carl is far more than just a player in our eyes – he is our brother and an important part of our family,” said Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi.

When Carl came to tell us (with) his news, yes there was sadness, but also great happiness to see him so healthy and hungry for the opportunities that lay ahead of him.

Carl is strong, a fighter, something he has proven in his playing career and also during what has been a very challenging time for him, so I have no doubt he will be a success in whatever he does next. We wish Carl all the very best for the future, but remind him he will always remain a part of the Wolves family.”

Goalkeepers from various nationalities and clubs in England also praised their former colleague.

In a video clip posted on the Wolves Twitter handle, while some of the players sang to the tune of the famous Cuban song ‘Guantanamera’ to render ‘One Carl Ikeme, there is only one Carl Ikeme’, others only chanted the phrase.

Some of the keepers in the video are Iker Casillas, Petr Cech, David Seaman, Joe Hart, Boaz Myhill, Mike Stowell, Adam Federici, Walter Zenger and Mark Schwarzer

Others are Asmir Begovic, Tomasz Kuszczak, Jack Ruddy, Andreas Sondergaard, David Stockdale, Will Norris and Lukasz Fabianski.

Ikeme was in goal for Nigeria’s first three matches of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. His first cap was in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier away to Tanzania in Dar es Salaam in September 2015.

  • NOA urges Nigerians to cultivate virtues of selflessness, sacrifice

As Christians celebrate Easter, the commemoration of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to imbibe virtues of selflessness and sacrifice toward a better Nigeria.

Dr Garba Abari, the Director-General of NOA in a statement on Thursday in Abuja, described the sacrificial life and death of Christ as constant reminders of how humans ought to put others first before self.

“ If all Nigerians live this way, most of the conflicts witnessed in the nation’s recent history would have been avoided.

“Nigerians, irrespective of religious persuasions should use the occasion of Easter for sober reflections on how we can be more accommodating of other people’s views, cultures and preferences.

“Such will enable us build a nation devoid of recurrent tensions and acrimony. It was clear that one sure way to show patriotism is to love your compatriots as yourself according to the teachings of Jesus.

“Hence, the agency’s `Sharing the Green Grass’` initiative aimed at encouraging herders and farmers to live in peace and tolerate each other,’’ Abari said.

The NOA boss felicitated with Christian faithful over the completion of the Lenten season and prayed for a happy Easter celebration and a more peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

I’m greater than my contemporaries; stop the comparisons, Cristiano Ronaldo warns fans

Speaking in a new Nike advert, Ronaldo said: ‘In the beginning I was dreaming to be best player in the world.

Friends of mine, they look at me like, “what are you talking about?” I played for fun, for a joke, but in my mind I think that potential started in Manchester, that’s when I started to believe.

I don’t see many people with my talent, my dedication, my work, my ethic of football. No-one is going to be compared with me, no-one is going to be Cristiano Ronaldo. You’re going to be yourself, I’m going to be myself.’

Ronaldo has scored 562 goals in 753 career matches, a remarkable return, and has more than one goal a game in his time at Real Madrid.

All that is missing from his trophy room is the World Cup, something which the Portgual legend will be hoping to put right in the summer.

Ronaldo will be in action for Real Madrid on Sunday evening, when Los Blancos host Girona looking to close the gap on Barcelona at the top of La Liga.

Madrid are currently fourth in the table, way off the pace of Barcelona despite their talisman being in fine form.
