Massive brawl between Russian football fans leaves at least 7 injured

Chaos erupted in the streets of the Russian city of Tver on Saturday night after fans from competing football teams started a massive brawl which left at least seven injured.

More than 60 people were part of the fighting which broke out after Zenit St Petersburg’s reserve team tied with FC Tver, the state news agency TASS reported.

Videos said to be from the brawl in central Tver showed injured men lying in the street with blood on their clothes.

There was also that of a hooded man kicking another man in the head and then punching someone.

Those involved fled the scene when police arrived, according to Russian sports media outlets.

Police are investigating the incident and are especially focused on why Spartak Moscow fans had travelled to Tver even though their team was not playing there.

  • Arteta tells Arsenal fans: Judge me after three years

Arteta tells Arsenal fans: Judge me after three years

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has told fans to judge him in three years’ time.

Pessimistic Arsenal supporters reckon Arteta will do well to last another three months in the job but the Premier League’s youngest manager is not in any mood to chuck in the towel.

Arteta insists: “I totally agree that Arsenal should not accept mediocrity.

“I know that people have the intention to bury us and try to criticise us but it is nothing new and I am not interested in that.

“I am not pointing at anyone, just expressing obvious feelings about some very disrespectful things that have been said.

“We need to put things into perspective because it’s one day of Premier League football under incredible circumstances and we have the whole season ahead of us.

“We knew the external consequences of that defeat at Brentford but any negativity that’s going to surround this club will be outside of these walls.

“I just want constructive people around me but if you don’t feel pressure in football then I think you’ve picked the wrong profession.

“We all have a responsibility to do our best but unfortunately the circumstances are uncontrollable so you have to adapt and do the best you can.

“You know you are going to be judged on results, but it doesn’t mean that you are doing a good or bad job because you win or lose football matches. I have had bigger challenges during my 18 months here and a lot of things have occurred during that time.

“Maybe now is not the right time to look at everything because a lot of people are not interested in analysing what has happened.

“But in two or three years’ time, when we look back with perspective, we will say ‘what happened makes a lot of sense’.”

Arteta remains convinced that the club’s long-term future is bright.

He says: We have a lot of positive new energy that is coming up.

“We needed to address a lot of issues that we had with the balance of our squad and define a model that can be sustainable in the short, medium and long-term.

“We have brought in a number of young players who are at different stages of their development but who sit perfectly with what we are trying to do.

“It shows you the project we are building.

“Some already have experience in the Premier League and some are coming from abroad but with a great education as well.

“And I think you can see the level they already have but still the margin for improvement they will have at this club.

“Martin Odegaard is still a really young man but he has huge experience in different clubs and he has a unique talent.

“We needed more options, alternatives, creativity and players that can be role models for this club so I am delighted we have Martin on a permanent deal.

“We lost creative players and we cannot put all of that on to the shoulders of Emile Smith Rowe.

“Emile has never played 50 games at this level and we can’t rely on one player, we need to protect him.

“Martin and Emile showed last season that they can play perfectly together and we need others who are able to do that.”

  • Tokyo Olympics: Basketball fans express disappointment with France’s victory over D’Tigress

Tokyo Olympics: Basketball fans express disappointment with France’s victory over D’Tigress

Some basketball fans have decried the poor performance of Nigeria’s senior national women’s team, D’Tigress, for losing to the French National team, 87-62, at the basketball event of the Tokyo Olympics.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, the sports fans described the match as a total whitewash of the D’tigress, expressing doubts in the team’s capabilities to go far.

Femi Adefeso, a Sports Pundit, told NAN that he was surprised at the performance especially if he were to judge how the team responded well against U.S.

“We did not play well today; it was a total all round poor performance as they were overwhelmed in all quarters of the game.

“ The players did not raise their game as expected; they looked so perplexed and perhaps, there is more to what we don’t know.

“It looks like a psychological problem and I hope it is not what will deter them from doing well against Japan,’’ Adefeso said.

The Head Coach of Lagos Islanders, Seyi Ayodele, told NAN that he was surprised at the final scores, saying that it was not a good performance.

“This is not the results we are used to; as African champions, they have continued to impress their fans and also proved their qualities’ especially when they meet tough rated opposition.

“They did extraordinarily well and became the first African team to reach the quarterfinals in the last World Cup played in Turkey.

“Indeed, there seems to be something wrong. I hope they would be able to change that when they engage Japan in their final group match,’’ Ayodele said.

D’Tigress had lost their first game to the U.S., 81-72, who are arguably the strongest team in the group, and raised a lot of expectations on them to compete favourably against France.

Micheal Chukwudali a basketball fan, told NAN that the team played against a more determined French team.

He said that the French defence stood their ground and at the offensive ball play, they also made D’Tigress look ordinary.

“IT was not a good game for D’Tigress. They did well but the French team was just better in that game.

“Tactically, they were better in the offensive and defensive rebounds and at some point in the game, D’Tigress lost their confidence to fight back.

“Things like this can happen in games if facing more robust and tactically sound team I hope D’Tigress raise their game in their last group game against Japan,” Chukwudali said.

However, the result leaves D’Tigress in a very tough situation as they need to beat host country Japan with more than 15 points to advance to the quarterfinals.

The French team got to an early start in the match recording a 18-12 in the first quarter and 26-15 in the second quarter.

They kept the momentum and played with more tenacity outscoring D’Tigress, recording 23-15 in the third quarter, giving no room for D’tigress to come back.

Their three points shot was also a contributory to their victory as they recorded 11 out 26 while D’Tigress could only manage four out of 10.

The French team who lost 74-70 to Japan in their first game performed their best so far in the tournament especially with five star performances against D’tigress.

The French top performances in the game were Williams Gabby, Johanness Marine, Miyem Endene and Duchet Alix with each player recording 13 points while Sandrine Grade made 14 points.

The D’Tigress members were made to work hard for every shot counted, as Ezinne Kalu and Promise Amukamara could only manage 10 and 11 points respectively as best players on the team.

  • PSG fans tell Pogba: We don’t want you here

PSG fans tell Pogba: We don’t want you here

Paris Saint-Germian fans are protesting against the prospect of signing Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

The Daily Mail says one set of fans have hung banners outside the Parc des Princes and PSG’s training ground to protest against his potential signing.

The banners, which appeared on Saturday morning, read: “Pogba, you should listen to your mother. She doesn’t want you here, neither do we”.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for the protest banners as yet, reports RMC Sport.

It’s not entirely clear what has caused the animosity from PSG fans towards Pogba, though the midfielder didn’t hold back in his celebrations when United won their Champions League last-16 tie in 2019.

Pogba was suspended for the second leg at the Parc des Princes and watched United’s dramatic late win from the stands but then came down to the pitch to celebrate wildly with his team-mates.

Fans of late Olanrewaju Fasasi, popularly known as Sound Sultan, including celebrities, gathered on Sunday for a procession and night of tributes to the musician who died at the age of 44.

Sound Sultan died following a hard-fought battle with Angioimmunoblastic T-Cell Lymphoma on July 11.

The procession kicked off from ‘Stone Field’ on 23 Road, where the late musician played basketball and featured in music concerts.

The procession continued through Fourth Avenue to Third Avenue then to Fifth Avenue before they converged at Federal Housing Authority Field on 23 Road for tributes.

One of the organisers, Mr Emmanuel Davids, told NAN that the aim of the event was not only to honour Sound Sultan but to show the world hidden facets of the life he lived.

“He was more than an entertainer; he was also the only philanthropist in the music industry who cared about everybody,” he said.

Some celebrities told NAN that Fasasi was not only a humble and selfless man but also a mentor to many artists in the music industry.

Nigerian singer, Dr Adewale Ayuba, popularly known as Mr Johnson told NAN that Sound Sultan did well in his career and took care of a lot of young artists.

“He was a brother. I called him ‘Mr Humility.’

“He has made his name to become a legend in Nigeria,” he said.

Popular Nigerian Singer, Juwonlo Iledare, also known as Jaywon said Fasasi was both a brother and father to him.

“Everybody who knows me in Festac Town knows I started my career with Sound Sultan.

“He gave me a vest, without knowing me and that vest was what changed my career because everybody was talking about me back then,” he said.

Another artist, Adewale Adepoju, popularly known as W4 said Sound Sultan played a very significant role in his career and music industry in Nigeria.

The self-acclaimed Sound Sultan protege said, “He did virtually everything for my career.

Mr Richard Ekanem, popularly known as MC Prof described Sound Sultan as a man who radiated good humour, humility, integrity and dignity.

He told NAN that during one of his comedy shows aimed at raising funds for persons who suffer chronic leg ulcer, Fasasi was the only A-list artiste who performed for free.

“He was very selfless, stood against oppression and lived a life worthy of emulation,” he said.

  • Maracana to partially open for fans for Copa America final

Rio de Janeiro’s city government has issued a decree allowing up to 6,500 fans to attend Copa America final match between Brazil and Argentina at the Maracana stadium.

Each sector of the iconic venue will be open at 10 percent capacity for Saturday’s match.

Also, fans will be forced to keep a distance of at least two meters, Rio’s official gazette said on Friday.

In addition, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) will be responsible for testing everyone who enters the stadium within 48 hours of the match.

Rio has banned supporters from attending matches since March 2020 as part of efforts to limit the spread of COVID-19.

An exception was made for the Copa Libertadores final in January when around 7,000 fans saw Palmeiras beat Santos 1-0.

“This is a one-off but it is also a test event for us. We’ll be taking great care and acting with caution,” city mayor Eduardo Paes told reporters.

Rio health secretary Daniel Soranz said CONMEBOL had asked that the Maracana be opened at 50 percent capacity, a request he described as “unreasonable”.

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of more than half a million people in Brazil, the world’s second-highest death toll after the U.S.

More than 140 people associated with the Copa America tested positive for the virus in the first three weeks of the tournament, according to the Brazilian health ministry.

  • I’ll soon explain to fans why I left Liverpool – Wijnaldum

I’ll soon explain to fans why I left Liverpool – Wijnaldum

Departing Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has promised fans an explanation why he is leaving Anfield.

Off contract at the end of the month, Wijnaldum is expected to sign for PSG when his deal expires.

He told Voetbal International: “I had to fight with tears (in my last game), because I myself did not expect that everything would be like this.

“I still have a lot of emotions, because I realise that I have already played the last match for Liverpool. Many fans ask me why I couldn’t just go and agree to the contract that was offered. But, of course, this is not the only point.

“Things happen behind the scenes that I can’t control, because I’m a player. I will explain this after the Euros, because now only the national team matters. I want to say that the staff at the training centre, club staff and teammates wanted me to stay. I told them more. After that, they fully understood my decision. This is important for me.”
