Klopp tells Fans: I don’t make transfer decisions here

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says he’s powerless over the club’s transfer decision-making.

After defeat to Burnley, Klopp hinted at his frustration that they have not been able to bring in reinforcements with the German’s squad significantly impacted by a number of injuries.

Klopp insisted the decision to bring in new recruits before the end of the month was out of his hands.

“These decisions are not my decisions,” he said.

“If somebody thinks we should do something, I cannot decide if we do something in the transfer market or not. That must be clear.”

Fans return will improve Man Utd home form – Solskjaer

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes the potential return of fans to Old Trafford could have an instant impact on home form.

United have won just one of their six home games in the Premier League this season, whereas their form on the road has been scintillating so far.

United released a statement in October claiming they could safely house 23,000 people with social distancing. And Solskjaer told the club’s website that he believes Old Trafford could house more than the 2,000 or 4,000 currently allowed, depending on the tier.

“Well, I think we want fans in safely and surely,” he said. “There must be a way we can get more and more fans in quickly. I know our club, we have looked at it many, many times and we’re ready to give a lot more people than the 2,000 or 4,000.

“So you know we’ve got a big capacity here. I don’t think there are very many that enjoy football more without fans. The quicker we get fans back in, the better the football will be.”

Solskjaer suggested fans will change the way teams approach games both home and away, believing there isn’t much difference between the two at the moment.

“Teams have a lot of respect for us in the way they’ve set up in the games,” he added.

“Home and away doesn’t really matter now. We’re going to have to look back at these stats and there are not going to be a lot of home teams having the better results. When we get fans in, the better advantage we’ll get from them – the extra passion and extra energy from them will definitely make a difference.”

Arsenal players are letting fans down – Rob Holding

Rob Holding admits Arsenal players are letting their fans down with their latest performances.

The Gunners fell to 15th on the table with Sunday’s loss to city rival Tottenham.

The result means Arsenal have suffered their worst start to a season in 39 years, and Holding knows the supporters deserve more.

“It is frustrating,” Holding said of his side’s shocking start to the campaign.

“It is a record that you don’t want to be a part of.

“We are frustrated as players and we are letting the fans down. We need to change that, win some games and put that to bed.”

EFL: Fans return to stadium after 266 days absence [Photos]

Fans returned to English Football League grounds on Wednesday for the first time in more than nine months as coronavirus restrictions were eased.

Luton and Wycombe, who had not played in front of fans at their home grounds since February, were permitted capacities of 1,000 for their matches.

Carlisle, Charlton, Shrewsbury and Cambridge also welcomed back fans.

Other EFL teams playing on Wednesday were in tier three areas, which prohibits supporters at elite level.

Luton and Wycombe were only permitted capacities of 1,000 but Charlton, Shrewsbury, Cambridge and Carlisle, who all staged test event matches earlier in the season, were all able to house 2,000.

No away fans were allowed and no supporter was able to attend if they live in a tier three area.

Arsenal will be the first Premier League club permitted to host home supporters, when they play Rapid Vienna in the Europa League on Thursday.

The first Premier League fixture to welcome fans since March will be West Ham’s game at home to Manchester United on Saturday, before Chelsea host Leeds later that day.

  • Arsene Wenger blasts Arsenal board, fans

Arsene Wenger blasts Arsenal board, fans

Arsene Wenger has hit out at Arsenal’s board and the fans for the way he was treated during his final season in charge.

Arsenal’s failure to challenge for top honours in Wenger’s latter days seemingly angered Arsenal fans, with a section of supporters very vocal in calling for the Frenchman’s departure.

He told the Guardian: “The hostility of a section of the fans and the board was unjustified.

“I felt as if I’d built the training centre and the stadium myself brick by brick… it was very hard, very brutal.

“Arsenal was a matter of life and death to me, and without it there were some very lonely, very painful moments.”

Asked whether he felt his job was a matter of life and death, he said: “Yes, it was my approach to the job.

“When you drive home after a defeat, and you think about the number of people who are destroyed, you have a sense of responsibility, of guilt.

“I believe there is no other way for a manager than to identify completely with the club, and to behave like he owns it.”

Barca fans happy their star Messi is staying

Barcelona fans breathed a sigh of relief on Friday, after Lionel Messi ended weeks of speculation by announcing he had decided, with reluctance, to stay at the club.

Messi, who made a shock announcement that he wanted to leave his lifelong club last month, said he would see out his contract until 2021 in order to avoid taking Barca to court.

“If he can stay for one more year and we can make the most of him and go see him play at the stadium, for me it’s very positive,” said FC Barcelona fan Oriol Vives, 31.

Jorge Sos, 39, added: “I think it’s good news for Barcelona because he is the best player in the world.”

Yet some fans felt the saga had soured Messi’s relationship with the club.

“I think it’s good he isn’t leaving but with all the mess he has created, to be honest, it is not good for Barcelona because he doesn’t give the impression he wants to play for the team,” said Sergi Roda, 24.

The 33-year-old Argentine forward took a swipe at the club’s leadership during the announcement that he would stay.

“The management of the club led by (president Josep Maria) Bartomeu is a disaster,” he was quoted as saying.

It was a sentiment echoed by some Barca fans on Friday.

“The whole situation has been very unpleasant,” said Jordi Marti, 43. “I think that the majority of the fault is the management’s.”

Spanish media focused on Messi’s reluctance, with headlines including El Mundo’s “Messi stays at Barcelona against his will” and sports daily Marca’s “Messi stays… but with lots of ‘buts’”.
