    Buhari seeks Senate’s confirmation of Gen Yahaya as new COAS

    President Muhammadu has written the Senate seeking its confirmation of Maj.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya as Chief of Army Staff (COAS).

    Buhari’s request is contained in a letter to the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan and read during Tuesday’s plenary.

    The letter reads: I hereby forward for confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Maj.-Gen. Farouk Yahaya as the Chief of Army Staff of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

    “His CV is herewith attached. It is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee in the usual expeditious manner.

    “Please accept Distinguish Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

    Farouk’s nomination is coming after the death of former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru.

    Attahiru and 10 others died in an ill-fated NAF aircraft near Kaduna International Airport on May 21.

    Buhari on May 27, appointed Yahaya as the COAS after the demise of the former COAS, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru and 10 others in a military plane crash in Kaduna.

    Yahaya, a member of the 37th Regular Course of the Nigerian Defence Academy was until his appointment, the Theatre Commander, Operation Had in Kai, an outfit for counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in the North East.

    Major General Farouk Yahaya on Friday has assumed command as Nigeria’s 22nd Chief of Army Staff (COAS) at the army headquarters in Abuja, the federal capital territory (FCT).

    President Muhammadu Buhari had on Thursday approved the appointment of Yahaya following the death of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru in a place crash on May 21 in Kaduna.

    The new COAS was until his appointment, the Theatre Commander, Operation Hadin Kai, the military counter-insurgency operation in the North East.

    Yahaya had earlier visited the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor before coming to Army Headquarters for the taking over ceremony.

    He was received at AHQ by the Chief of Policy and Plan, Maj.-Gen. Ben Ahanotu, who also briefed him before proceeding to assume office.

    The COAS however asked for a minute silence in honour of the late Attabiru and other officers who died with him, after which he asked journalists to leave the hall for closed door meeting with officers.

    He did not make any make any public statement before departing Army Headquarters.

    The new COAS, was born on Jan. 5, 1966 in Sifawa, Bodinga Local Government Area of Sokoto state.

    Gen Yahaya who is a member of the 37 Regular Course of the prestigious Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), started his cadet training on Sept. 27, 1985 and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps on Sept. 22, 1990.

    He held several appointments including Staff, Instructional and Command.

    Notable among the appointments held by the new COAS are Garrison Commander Headquarters Guards Brigade, Directing Staff at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Deputy Director Army Headquarters Department of Military Secretary, Deputy Director Army Research and Development and the Chief of Staff, Headquarters Joint Task Force Operation Pulo Shield.

    He also served as the Principal General Staff Officer (PGSO) to the Minister of Defence, the Commander, Headquarters 4 Brigade and 29 Task Force Brigade (Operation Zaman Lafiya).

    He was also Director Manpower at the Army Headquarters, Military Secretary, Army Headquarters and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division of the Nigerian Army.

    Until his appointment as the COAS, Maj Gen Faruk Yahaya was the Theatre Commander Operation HADIN KAI, responsible for Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency operations in North East Nigeria.

    The new COAS is a holder of several honours and awards, some of which include, Forces Service Star, Meritorious Service Star, Distinguished Service Star, Grand Service Star, Passed staff course (Dagger), National DefenceCourse (Chile), Economic Community of West Africa State Monitoring Group Medal, Command Medal, Field Command Medal, General Operations Medal, Silver Jubilee Medal and Golden Jubilee Medal.

    He is married and blessed with children.

    Newly appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Major General Farouk Yahaya has paid last respect to the late former COAS, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru.

    Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday appointed Major General Yahaya to replace Attahiru, after the former COAS died in an air mishap.

    President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff.

    Yahaya replaces the late General Ibrahim Attahiru who recently died in a fatal plane crash en-route Kaduna State along with other senior officers and crew members.

    The Nigerian Army Headquarters has confirmed the appointment of Major General Yahaya.

    Yahaya’s appointment was confirmed in a statement released by military spokesperson, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu on Thursday.

    Until his appointment the new COAS was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East code named Operation HADIN KAI.

    The statement read: “The Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Mohammadu Buhari has appointed Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new Chief of Army Staff.

    “Prior to his appointment Major General Yahaya was the General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army and the incumbent Theatre Commander of the Counter terrorism Counter Insurgency military outfit in the North East code named Operation HADIN KAI.”
