  • Fasoranti's daughter: You all have failed us, Adebanjo slams South West Governors

Elder statesman, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, on Saturday, blamed Southwest governors for the security challenge in the zone and said they have failed in defending the people.
“You governors, you are supposed to defend us but for one reason or the other, you fail in that task. Our people were being kidnapped, our people are being raped, our people are being killed yet you keep quiet,” an emotional Adebanjo said during a condolence visit to Chief Reuben Fasoranti whose daughter, Mrs. Funmi Olakinrin, 58, was shot dead on Friday by gunmen at Ore, Ondo State.
But Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State said the occasion did not call for political statements or coloration.
Adebanjo broke down in tears as he spoke at the Fasorantis’.
Speaking to reporters thereafter, Makinde said: “What happened is something very serious and if it had happened to somebody ordinary we would never hear anything.
Governors from the South West held a security summit and we are serious about it and we will take this seriously and what has happened will make us to double up our effort.
“This is supposed to be a federation with federal system and both the state and the federal government.
“We will continue to fight for true federalism and for the opportunity to be able to protect our people because it is so fundamental that we have to do it.
“This is the time to come together in unity to fight for our people, it is not the time to fight or look at ourselves as belonging to different ideological set up or different political parties.
“It is the time to bring the agenda of Yoruba land forward and fight it collectively. It is sad that something like this has to happen to nudge us to this direction. I want to seek everybody support and we will provide the leadership and we are not going to turn our back to the people.”

  • Fasoranti's daughter's killing baseless, mindless, unacceptable – Yoruba Unity Forum

The Yoruba Unity Forum (YUF) Saturday expressed shock about the killing of Pa Fasoranti’s daughter Mrs Funke Olakunrin.
It described the killing by suspected herdsmen as mindless and unacceptable.
The forum, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr Lanre Ogundipe, blamed the Federal Government for the death, saying it was due to the alleged ineptitude of the security agencies.
The statement read: “ The Yoruba Unity Forum received with shock, sadness and trepidation, the news of the unfortunate killing of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin, daughter of Yoruba statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, by suspected herdsmen at Ore junction on her way from Akure
“While YUF commiserates with the reverred Yoruba elder, his family, both nuclear and extended, and indeed all of Yorubaland on this unfortunate, yet preventable death, and sincerely pray that the gentle soul of Mrs. Olakunrin finds peace with her maker, we’re constrained to lay the entire blame of her sad demise on the doorstep of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“We know for a fact that the Buhari government’s kid-gloves treatment of the murderous excesses of these herdsmen is enough filip for their continued killing of innocent souls, especially in places opposed to their archaic, backward, and crude method of pastoralism, hence, we see Mrs. Olakunrin’s murder, as another serie, in that devilish plot of theirs.
    “Again, we’re alarmed by the claim that Mrs. Olakunrin’s killing was a failed armed robbery attack, for we’re yet to see where armed robbers, whose primary motive is to dispossess victims of their belongings, will kidnap or riddle the same victim’s car with bullets. YUF finds this claim spineless, and absolutely ill thought;
“YUF feels that, and rightly so too, that President Buhari’s continued emotional attachment to his folks; the Fulanis, to the detriment of the rest of the country, is already the fuel for the eventual arson of the whole country, if unchecked…
“ YUF reiterates her call for the total restructuring of the country, as that in our well informed opinion, is the panacea to the myriads of problems confronting a disjointed and faulty union like Nigeria’s. Failure to adhere restructuring principles – ‘Without immediate restructuring along the lines of the 2014 National Conference Resolutions, the continued existence of Nigeria as one country is very much open to doubt.”

  • How Olakunrin, Fasoranti’s daughter was killed in broad daylight in Ore – Police

The police in Ondo State have given details of how suspected herdsmen in a kidnap attempt, shot and killed Funke Olakunrin, the second daughter of Afenifere leader, Reuben Fasoranti.
Police spokesman, Femi Joseph, said the incident occurred between Kajola and Ore along Ondo-Ore road on Friday.
Recall that Afenifere’s spokesperson, Yinka Odumakin, had earlier insinuated on Friday evening that “Mrs Funke Olakunrin, based on accounts of all eyewitnesses, was killed by Fulani herdsmen who emerged from the bush, shot her and killed her in the process.”
Odumakin said the late Olakunrin was travelling from Akure to Ore when her vehicle was attacked alongside others.
However, the police spokesperson Joseph confirmed the attack and the death of Olakunrin said he was not aware the deceased was related to the Afenifere Chairman.
“It happened at a spot between Kajola and Ore, where some hoodlums numbering about 15, attacked two vehicles, 1 Toyota Land Cruiser and 1 Camry,” Joseph on Friday night.
“The the Land Cruiser was carrying five passengers, including the deceased, which we later identified as one Funke Olakunrin.
“They shot the woman, we rushed her to the hospital, but we lost her.
“Other four occupants that were abducted, we have rescued them.
“Inside the Camry too, we had three occupants, they were also abducted, but we have rescued them. We have rescued a total of seven persons taken during the attack.
“There is still one person left that we are still looking for, and we are working frantically to ensure that the hoodlums are brought to justice and ensure any other hostage were rescued,” he said.

The police spokesman said he would not confirm if the attackers were Fulani herdsmen, noting that until an arrest was made, it would be difficult to identify the persons and where they came from.
“No, you can’t shave the head of a man in his absence,” Joseph said. “You have to wait for us to arrest them. Somebody you have not arrested, it is difficult for you to establish his ethnicity.”
He said crime does not have colour, ethnicity or religion, adding that “crime is a crime and a criminal is a criminal.”
Afenifere is at the forefront of the campaign against the building of cattle settlement for herdsmen earlier promoted by the federal government.
The group had earlier raised the alarm over the rising wave of violent activities of herdsmen in the south west region, calling on the governors and security agencies to rise up to the situation to save the nation from an impending armed conflict.
The governors of the south west had also responded to an alarm by summoning a security summit where they had resolved to tackle the problems of herdsmen and kidnapping.
