Iganga attack: Teenager narrates how his hunter father was killed

A teenager named Idowu Abdulkareem, who is a resident of Igangan community, in the Ibarapa North area of Oyo state has narrated how Fulani herdsmen killed his father and dispersed his three brothers.

He narrated his experience during a programme on Agidigbo 88.7FM Ibadan.
Idowu said his father was a hunter and among the brave ones who combated killer herdsmen whenever they attacked Ibarapa.

“Some Bororo (herdsmen) came to invade our community (Igangan) and my father was one of the hunters that always combated the Fulanis. On that fateful day, my father had gathered other hunters and was ready to confront the herdsmen. My father was shot in the head by the herdsmen immediately after he stepped out of the house from our backyard.

We saw something white coming out of his head (brain fluid) as we were trying to drag his lifeless body into the house. The herdsmen who shot him were trying to catch up with us, then I went to the window and started shooting my catapult at them till my brothers were be able to drag the body of our father into the house.

“After we succeeded in dragging the body into the house, we all ran out of the house to an unknown destination. On our way, we met a community member going towards Ibadan in his vehicle. We stopped him and he asked if we were also running for safety, we said yes. And he put us in the boot of his vehicle. That was how we got to Ibadan.”

He said he and some of his siblings who also fled during the attack had not located one another since then.

Slain jobseeker: Mob wrecks Akwa Ibom alleged serial rapist’s house, ‘arrests’ father

Youths from Nnung Ikono Obio in the Oruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, on Tuesday, invaded the family house of Uduak Akpan, the major suspect in the killing of a jobseeker, Iniubong Umoren, and vandalized it.

According to reports, the angry youth took the action after setting aflame the security post of the one-storey building.

The youth carted away all the belongings in the building and took the father of the suspected killer to the police.

Iniubong was allegedly enticed, kidnapped and sexually abused to death by Akpan, who hails from the local government.

The youth explained that their action was based on the alleged complicity of Akpan in the murder of the 26-year-old graduate of Philosophy from the University of Uyo.

In a chat with Punch, the youth President Sunday Essien, expressed displeasure at the alleged action of an indigene of the community.

“There is nothing happening apart from what you have already heard. It’s not good for the boy to kill a fellow human being. We don’t know that that was what he had been doing. That is the reason we took this action,” Essien said.

He, however, absolved the Chairman of the local government council, Mr Iniobong Ekpenyong, saying he played the role of the chief security officer of council by calling the police to arrest the suspect.

In another development, students of the Faculty of Arts, University of Uyo, who were dressed in black outfits, on Tuesday, protested against the horrible murder of Iniubong and demanded that justice be served.

The students walked round the school campus in a solemn procession and called on wife of the state governor, Mrs Martha Udom Emmanuel, to play her motherly role by ensuring that justice was achieved.

The leader of 2015 set of the faculty, Mr Unyime Anietie, vowed to ensure that their colleague’s death would not go in vain after labouring so hard to go through school.

He stated, “Iniubong Umoren did not deserve to die; she didn’t have to die after all the stress she went through in school. We want to appeal to Mrs Martha Emmanuel to use her pet project, Family Empowerment and Youths Re-orientation Path-initiative to ensure that the perpetrators of such act are brought to justice.

“If this is what it will take for rape and all other forms of gender-based violence to end, then we appeal to all stakeholders to see to the end of this case.”

My father’s death affects me till this day-Omotola

Actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has opened up on one of the tragic moments of her life. She noted that something died in her when her father passed on.

Omotola made this known during a chat with media personality, Chude Jideonwo.

According to her: “I think everything I have been, positively or negatively, was sole because of that ― my father’s death. It affected me so much that I did not even know how much. I did not even mourn my dad.

“They picked me up from school, I was just 12; understand that I was very close to my dad. I was an only child for a long time. My dad and I were close and he was the manager of Lagos Country Club; I mean Lagos Country Club when it was the only club. Ikoyi Club was just trying to grow teeth at that time.

“All the presidents, everybody was there. So, my dad was like a hip man. Because we were so close, I started rolling with people of influence from a very little age; it was nothing to me. I was always with them. I will sit down and my dad would tell me, ‘cross your legs’ and I would cross my legs. There are presidents and everybody there talking and I am sitting down and imitating them. My dad would tell me that you know you can be a first lady and I would agree with him. So, this is how close we were.”

On how she felt when she discovered it was her father that had died, she said: “I did not know how to react, I did not know if it was the guilt of me thinking it shouldn’t be him; I was too young to process it, or the fact that I have truly missed him and now that he was dead, I would not see him again. Or that I was angry that I did not spend enough time with him because he did not spend enough time with me as he shipped me off to Kaduna. I did not know what I was feeling.

“So, I was just there; I was numb, I was really numb. Now that I am older, I can understand it, but then, I did not. So, I just became emotionless. It has affected me to this day. There is nothing you would say that will almost move me. It was like something died in me, I don’t know how to explain it”.

Speaking in an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, Teni said: “I know the bloodline I come from.I know the lineage I am coming from.I don’t come from the lineage of cowards. My father single handedly chased armed robbers from Isolo. If you go to Okota and ask who my father was, they will tell you. My father died for the people. When armed robbers come around, he would go out and chase them.He helped a lot of people, gave people free education. So coming from that kind of legacy, its only right to be confident. I grew up with my mother telling me ‘don’t forget the child of who you are, you are born for success, be yourself, be good to people, be respectful to people’’

Teni who recently released her debut album, ‘Wondaland’, also went down memory lane recalling how her mother punished her for forgetting to greet one of their domestic staffs during her early days as a child.

“I grew up with my parents having lot of staffs and I remember one day, my mum stopped the laundry people from doing our laundry. So I had to do my laundry myself because we had a lot of dogs and if you forget your clothes at the backyard on the rope, in the night the dogs will bite your clothes.

So I woke up that morning and I remembered I forgot to pack my clothes the previous morning, So I was running downstairs to the back, I didn’t know my mother was coming behind me going to work.So because I wanted to go and see if my school uniform had been bitten by the dog, I forgot to greet the woman. My mother was behind me,my mum said so you are the ones paying their salaries now that you cannot greet.Even me that I am paying salaries, I greet them.I told her I was in a hurry to go get my clothes.Do you know what my mum did?My mum told me to take the broom and for two weeks I was packing dog shit, I was cleaning the gutter .I was the cleaner of the house. She didn’t care if I got to school late.If I get to school late, they will flog me.So I learnt respect in power. No matter how powerful you become, no matter how successful you become be respectful. It was never confidence at the detriment of bringing others down.It was know who you are but still respect people”.

Father of abducted Kaduna female student dies from heart attack

The father of one of the 39 abducted college students in Kaduna State, Ibrahim Shamaki, is dead.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG gathered that Ibrahim was the father of Fatima Shamaki, one of the girls with hijab seen in the video that was released by bandits who invaded the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation in the Afaka area of the state.

According to family sources who with Channels Television, late Shamaki died of a heart attack after he fell ill shortly after the news of his daughter’s abduction was broken to him.

He was said to have later died on Friday evening while his relatives were about to take him to a hospital for further medical treatment.

The news of Ibrahim’s death broke hours after the state government met with representatives of the grieving parents of the missing students at the Government House in the state capital.

This comes as Fatima Shamaki and the other abducted students prepare to spend their 15th night in the captivity of the bandits.

TNG recalls that on March 12 a group of armed men attacked the school – coming after the attacks by bandits on schools in Katsina, Niger, and Zamfara States.

But the military said it promptly responded to the attack as troops of Quick Response Force of 1 Division of the Nigerian Army mobilised to prevent the bandits from kidnapping the staff and students of the school.

As soon as the security operatives arrived in the school, they were said to have engaged the assailants in a gunfight.

This according to the military, led to the rescue of 180 people, comprising 132 male students, 40 female students, and eight civilian staff.

The rescued students and staff were later evacuated to a safe place while those who were injured were taken to a military facility for medical attention.

Despite the swift response of the soldiers, the bandits kidnapped 39 people, including 23 female and 16 male students.

A day after the incident, the bandits released a video in which the abducted students were seen being beaten as they pleaded with the government to rescue them.

While the parents of the missing students called for their release, the state government has ruled out the option of negotiating with bandits.

Zamfara schoolgirl secures father’s release after meeting him in kidnappers’ den

The father of one of the abducted Jangebe school girls, who himself had been in captivity, regained his freedom on Monday night with tales of sadness and joy.

Mallam Iliya Gwaram, who was brought to Government House, Gusau around 9 p.m. on Monday, said he told his daughter not to recognise him in the den of their abductors.

Gwaram, rescued along with nine other victims, including nursing mothers and three toddlers, was brought in in a heavily guarded motorcade.

He said: “I have been in captivity with these other people for more than three months when on that Friday morning, l saw the school girls being brought into where we were camped by our abductors.

“At first, l didn’t know who they were or where they were coming from, until l saw the face of my scared daughter looking at me.

“I quickly told some of the girls who were brought along with her and sat near me to tell my child not to show any indication that she even knew me.

“The girls were brave enough and they kept our little secret up to the last day of their four days stay with us.

“l never cried in the whole of my life like l cried the day the girls were taken back because l felt it was the last time l would see my daughter.

“Fortunately and unknown to me, my daughter informed Gov. Matawalle of our whereabouts and the poor health conditions we were, which led to our freedom today as facilitated by the governor and his security people,” he said.

On whether money was given to secure their freedom, Gwaram said he did not know as all that mattered to them was to return to their homes.

“Look at those two women that we were rescued along with me, two million naira was said to have been raised by their relatives to give to the bandits more than two months ago.

“But the money could not be traced as it was suspected that it was a different gang that intercepted the man bringing the money and took it from him,” he said.

Gwaram further said his daughter would continue with her education.

“If she wasn’t educated, she would have exposed me when she saw me and that would have put the two of us in danger.

“I thank God for that and l will continue to pray that such a thing never happens to even my worst enemy,” Gwaram said.

TheNewsGuru.com, TNG reports that 279 of the Jangebe school girls, abducted by gunmen from their school on March 2, were released four days later after reported negotiations between the bandits and state government agents, security men and some repentant bandits.
